The low quality of life present on many indian reservations can be attributed
to the bureaucracy surrounding reservation governments assets, and the
insignificant political influence held by tribes. These factors make it difficult
for reservations to liquidate their resources and improve their overall quality
of life.

thesis.

Un-American Reservations
- Indian reservations referred
to as islands of poverty in a sea of
prosperity
- Even though some
reservations feature billions of
dollars in revenue from casinos,
income per capita remains low
- Lands placed in trusts are
often overused, cannot be properly
utilized by Indian tribes
- Indians often do not have
secure rights to their property

Riley Initially reservations were set up with the

intention of the government funding
everything. However, once established
the government did the bare minimum in
providing shelter, food, healthcare, and
employment. Also, the land in which the
natives live is undesirable land so the
government not helping them is the
equivalent of the natives having nothing.

Jack Recent investigations would

suggest the benefits of Indian
gaming are not as substantial as
first thought and tempered,
perhaps significantly in some
instances, by the influence of other
factors.

They report, contrary to

expectations, that Indian gaming
was negatively related to county
per capita income and positively
related to the unemployment rate;
the coefficient for the other
variable, employment, was in the
expected direction and significant.
Findings such as these, though
based on a different unit of
analysis, point to the need to
investigate these issues more
thoroughly before concluding that
Indian gaming is having the
desired effects intended by
policymakers.
