Kelly Hoppen for Century is a collection of fabrics,
upholstery, wood and metal case goods created by the
celebrated British interior designer for a sophisticated and
design-savvy consumer. It's coolly simple. It's based on
Asian ideals like balance and symmetry for a sense of
disciplined elegance. It's diminutive in scale, yet comfortable
in a restrained way.
"The last thing I ever want is to impose my vision on anyone,"
asserts Kelly. "I believe designing a home is a deeply
personal journey. That's why Century and I have made these
pieces so pure and clean. They invite interpretation—and

dinner party. Rich purple mohair against ebony
coloured wood create a sense of intimacy. Soft, round
shapes, lush textures (such as the velvety chair fabrics),
bespoke upholstered walls, and perfectly chosen flowers
coexist in perfect harmony.
Kelly Hoppen's interiors are renowned for appealing to all

Kelly Hoppen believes one's home is

central to one's well being. She prefers
contrasting textures to a diversity of
colours provoking a depth of feeling and
a sensual experience. Cashmere,
leather, cotton, wood and wool in the
same colour scheme are juxtaposed to
gracefully unify this room into an elegant
yet soothing cocoon.
Standing tall is an armoire (or

entertainment cabinet) designed in a
classic "Kelly Hoppen" style. The frame of
this delicate, Eastern inspired piece
appears to run through and support its
wing-tip "floating" top.
In the same way that a beautiful piece of

jewelry enlivens a little black dress, this
clover shaped ottoman serves as a focal
point. The textured cover creates a
frisson of contrast with the overall
softness of the room.
The fluid pattern of Kelly's Tibetan Tiger

Rug perfectly relates to the curves of the
sofa. Its cushions and pillows, covered in
rich woven fabrics, complete the space.

Here is a perfect example of the classic balance,

harmony and order that characterize Kelly's designs.
The neutral colours and contrasting textures create
a sense of calm and peacefulness.
The bedroom is among Kelly's favorite rooms. She

views it as an intimate haven "where your dreams
take place. It is the last thing you see in your day
as well as the first thing you see in the morning.
You have to start and finish on a positive note."
Originally designed by Kelly Hoppen Interiors for

some of her most heralded clients, this bed is in
great demand. The long horizontal panel of
upholstery on the headboard is a trademark of her
use of linear and geometric forms combined with
luxurious and sensual materials.
The initials "KH" form the monogram for the pattern

that adorns her new collection of bed dressings
produced in partnership with Sferra Bros. This Italian
company makes linens that have graced noble
beds around the world.

This room is typical of the versatility that is

important to Kelly's design philosophy.
Each piece has been carefully placed
but is not "rigid" in its position.
As practical as it is lovely, the dining table

is extendible. The chairs have been
carefully designed for comfort and style.
The two chairs at the end of the dining
table act as star pieces to add theatre
and interest.
These rather flamboyant wing chairs are

upholstered in a colour and texture that
provide rather decadent contrast to the
more subtly designed chairs with which
they are paired. These grand chairs
could also sit comfortably in a den, study
or bedroom, on their own or as a pair.
In this room, the use of the blonde oak is

perfect for environments that call for
yellow toned furniture. This colour is
particularly good for coastal retreats or
homes in the country.

details from the construction of the six
assembled wooden panels. The ends of
the verticals that make its legs form a
subtle cross detail of contrasting grain at

The six-legged form of this table, the

neat joint where the legs meet under
the tabletop, and the relationship
between the round top and the angular
legs were inspired by a Qing dynasty
Chinese washstand in the Victoria &
Albert Museum in London. The angled
joint at the top of the legs was inspired
by a detail used in traditional Chinese
and Japanese woodworking. The glass
top is removable for easy cleaning and

offers the look of Kelly Hoppen's
trademark use of fabric 'runners' on

by the Art Deco glamour of interiors by
Syria Maugham and Jean Cocteau.
It uses a unique and custom-designed
mechanism to ensure that all the mirror
panels in each of its three screens
remain parallel however far open or
closed they are pivoted. The panels
can be arranged to produce dramatic
multiple reflections of the room in which
they stand.

sculptural form of the arms "growing"

from an antique French Bergêre
armchair in Kelly Hoppen's personal

wooden frame and a very
contemporary, simply shaped back

Kelly Hoppen is best known as the interior designer whose calm, elegant aesthetic
BIOGRAPHY has permeated our consciousness and achieved an iconic (and much imitated)
status.
In addition to leading her celebrated interior design studio – which has

completed international schemes for houses, apartments, yachts, a hotel and
numerous corporate spaces – Kelly has successfully implemented her unique
approach across a number of business areas, firmly establishing her reputation
as designer, retailer, author, educator, innovator and inspiration.
In 2002, Kelly opened a shop in London’s Brompton Cross, offering furniture,

accessories and services from wedding list to interior design consultancy. Similar
formats of Kelly Hoppen emporia are now open in New York and San Francisco.
Members of the public can access the Kelly Hoppen brand even more intimately
through the Kelly Hoppen School. Every course allows up to 14 students to learn
about Kelly’s approach to interior design, including styling, budgeting, sourcing,
dealing with the client and time management.
In 2005 Kelly launched her fifth book, the latest in a dynamic and successful
publishing programme. Part retrospective and part manifesto, Kelly Hoppen Style,
the Golden Rules of Design explores Kelly’s global influences, reveals stunning new
interior projects and offers guidance on how to recreate her style. Kelly Hoppen’s
other books are East Meets West, Table Chic, In Touch, and Close Up.
Through her publishing activities, as with all initiatives Kelly has sought to combine a
sense of calm and balance with clear creative thinking. The term most frequently
used to describe her work is ‘East Meets West’, which concisely captures the fusion
of contemporary simplicity with emotional and spiritual depth.
When describing her own work, Kelly has said that “…the defining elements of
great design are luxury, balance, light and a sense of being at one with the
natural and organic world”. It is this belief that lies at the heart of Kelly’s holistic
approach within (and between) every business strand.
Kelly’s domestic, retail and corporate retail interiors strive to touch all the senses;
her writing and her school are designed to be both accessible and inspirational;
and most importantly, her approach to design is fundamentally inclusive. When
designing for clients, Kelly and her team begin with a detailed interview process to
really understand the clients needs and wants – everything from where they have
breakfast to their personal preferences and daily habits. This lengthy process
ensures that the design will grow from the client’s lifestyle, rather than being added
to it. “Our homes are living spaces in which we grow and change – and we must
accept that this will only happen if our environment can grow and change with
us”, believes Kelly. “I believe that for far too long we have been designing our
homes without a real understanding of our needs – or those of our family, lover,
children or visitors”.
As she looks toward the next 25 years, Kelly Hoppen’s vision is clear. All projects
have the context of maturity and experience. Trust and belief work hand in hand
with experimentation and innovation. Short-lived trends give way to commitment
and permanence – an enduring romance rather than a short fling. And within all
this, Kelly’s creativity and enthusiasm – for her life and her work - continue
unbounded.
