With Less than a Month to Go, Voters in South Carolina

Give Norman a 47% to 34% Lead Over Parnell
Columbia, SC With less than a month before South Carolinas 5th Congressional District
Primary, voters give Republican Ralph Norman a 47% to 34% lead over Democratic primary
winner Archie Parnell.
Normans lead shows up in voters favorability views. Of the 746 respondents, 35% gave
Norman a favorable option, while 27% were unfavorable, and 38% were uncertain. The picture
is flipped for Parnell, with only 26% of respondents indicating a favorable view of the candidate,
while 32% see him in unfavorable light and 41% are uncertain. The number of voters unsure of
either one of the candidates suggests theres room for movement over the next four weeks.
The poll also finds President Trump to have a positive favorability rating, with 53% of
respondents approving of the job Trump is doing as president and 38% giving Trump a
disapproval rating.
Survey participants were also asked how they felt the firing of former FBI director James Comey
and the U.S. House of Representatives recent passage of the American Health Care Act. overall,
47% of respondents approve of President Trumps actions, while 37% disapprove.
A different picture emerges on the American Health Care Act. Overall, 30% of survey
participants approved of the bill, while 40% of respondents disapproved of the bill, and 29%
were uncertain.
Perhaps the most interesting finding is the results on how individuals that voted for either
Trump or Clinton during the 2016 presidential election answered the questions. Respondents
that voted for Trump continue to be loyal to the Republican party, with 81% giving the nod to
Norman, and only 5% shifting support to either Parnell or Kocher. The picture is not quite as
positive for Clinton, with 79% of respondents sticking with Democratic candidate Archie Parnell
and 6% shifting to either Norman (+4%) or Kocher (+2%). Various other crosstabs follow in this
report.
Gravis Marketing, a nonpartisan research firm, conducted a random survey of 746 likely voters
in South Carolina. The poll was conducted from May 19th through the 22nd and has a margin of
3.6%. The totals may not round to 100% because of rounding. The polls were conducted using
interactive voice responses and an online panel of cell phone users, with the results weighted by
demographic characteristics.
