What is Nondestructive Testing?

Nondestructive testing (NDT)is testing that does not destroy the test object. [NDT] is vital for constructing and
maintaining all types of components and structures. To detect different defects such as cracking and corrosion, there
are different methods of testing available, such as X-ray (where cracks show up on the film) and ultrasound (where
cracks show up as an echo blip on the screen)

While destructive testing usually provides a more reliable assessment of the state of the test object, destruction of
the test object usually makes this type of test more costly to the test object's owner than nondestructive testing.
Destructive testing is also inappropriate in many circumstances, such as forensic investigation. That there is a
tradeoff between the cost of the test and its reliability favors a strategy in which most test objects are inspected
nondestructively1

Cowleys Nondestructive Testing program provides tremendous opportunities in safety & quality inspection. The NDT
program offers an Associate of Applied Science degree that is currently in high demand. NDT students develop the
knowledge and skills required to perform sophisticated testing techniques such as eddy current, x-ray, liquid dye
penetrant, magnetic particle, and ultrasonic testing that are currently required in many different industry fields.

NDT technicians are in high demand. The basis of inspection technology depends upon the technicians ability to
understand the principles of physics and use fundamental mathematical calculations to locate flaws in materials.
Lives sometimes depend upon the ability of the technician to understand and have adequate training in this area.

You will learn blueprint reading, basic metallurgy, measurement, and proper use of equipment used in the various
NDT testing processes. Mid-level mathematics, communication skills, writing, and understanding codes &
procedures, materials composure, and basic theories of economics are also integrated into the program.

Upon completion of this program, students will be prepared to develop and maintain quality control programs.
Students will be trained to set up and calibrate equipment, as well as interpret and evaluate results based upon
Nondestructive testing methods with respect to applicable codes, standards, and specifications. Students will be
prepared for the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) certification examination.

Classes in Nondestructive Testing began at Cowley College in 1991. Aerospace in Kansas and refining/oil production
to the south in Oklahoma, created an industrial need for an NDT inspection program. Our location provides diverse
industry support in the form of equipment, inspection materials, and program technical direction.

Nondestructive testing is the examination of an object or material in a manner which does

not affect its future usefulness. Nondestructive tests are done to detect internal or external
imperfections or defects; to determine structure, composition, and properties; or to
measure geometric characteristics without affecting the form, fit, or function of the test
object or material.
The NDT program at Ridgewater College is nationally known by employers for its extensive
training in NDT theory, testing and inspection methods. The program is recognized by the
American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) as one of the best colleges in the
United States to offer NDT training. Students train in each of the major nondestructive
testing methods, including X-ray and isotope radiography, ultrasound, eddy-current,
magnetic particle, and liquid penetrant. Students spend much of their time performing
hands-on applications in one of the best equipped colleges in the United States.
There are three major educational tracks available in Nondestructive Testing: a two-year
AAS degree, diploma, and the Advanced Ultrasonic Testing Technology Diploma (aimed at
testing of nuclear reactors).
The Ridgewater NDT lab is one of the most completely equipped training facilities in the
country. Some of the equipment includes X-ray tubes, Cobalt, Iridium, and Cesium isotope
exposure devices, ultrasonic instruments, conventional and phased array, eddy current
instruments, and magnetic particle units. Labs also include two stationary liquid penetrant
units, as well as all common penetrant systems used in industry, computerized acoustic
emission, real-time and Vidicon X-ray systems, as well as a complete metallurgical and
welding department.

CONVENTIONAL NDT
The NDT center offers customized programs at various levels of certifications using the well-equipped
facilities in the six conventional methods namely UT, RT, MT, PT, ET and VT. The training is aided by
more than 300 flawed test specimens of plates, pipes, and T-joints for welding and forging. The
training on Electromagnetic Testing and IRIS (ET, MFL, RFT & UT) for Tube Inspection using MS-5800
has also been incorporated and well received by the industries.

ADVANCED NDT

Training in advanced NDT methods such as Phased Array UT and TOFD are also available. The center is
currently equipped with five sets of PAUT & TOFD Omniscan MX with scanner, encoder and other
accessories.

AWS/CWI

The NDT Centre has also been granted authorization by the AWS, the American Welding Society to
conduct AWS/CWI seminars and examinations since the beginning of 2010. The seminar serves as a
sound refresher to welding inspection, particularly for practicing welding inspectors and anyone
aspiring to be an AWS-Certified Welding Inspector. AWS-CWI Seminar is specifically addressed to
welding inspectors of varied levels of background, and provides understanding of the critical job
related to welding issues. Companies have heavily relied on the AWS certification in ensuring the
highest level of quality workmanship. AWS-CWI provides the various duties and responsibilities of the
welding inspectors before, during and after the welding.

Program Overview
The UAA Welding & Nondestructive Testing (NDT) program offers an Associate of
Applied Science (AAS) degree in welding and nondestructive testing technology, and
three separate occupational endorsement certificates in welding, advanced welding or
nondestructive testing technology. Curriculum for the three occupational endorsement
certificates is combined in the AAS degree.
Welding courses are designed to develop knowledge and skills in four main welding
processes and three thermal cutting processes, as well as gain a wide range of
technical knowledge in welding application, procedure/welder qualification, reading
plans and specifications and applied metallurgy. Welder qualification tests are
administered as prescribed in AWS D1.1, API Standard 1104, or ASME IX welding
codes.
Nondestructive testing technician students examine metallic components or weldments
to locate and evaluate discontinuities by learning to apply liquid die penetrant (PT)
magnetic particle (MD) eddy current (ET) radiographic (RT) and ultrasonic testing (UT)
methods. Student qualification in each NDT method is based on general, specific and
practical examinations administered as prescribed in the American Society for
Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The AAS in Non Destructive Testing and Inspection is a self-directed, outcome-based program
designed to prepare students for technician-level employment in a manufacturing environment. The
program is offered exclusively at the Manufacturing and Applied Technology Center (MATC) at
COCC's Redmond Campus.

Departmental approval is required for enrollment at the Manufacturing and Applied Technology
Center.

The results of NDTI surround us every day. NDTI technicians routinely inspect rivet joints on the
skins of airliners using eddy current to keep us safe when we fly. The cars we drive use steel that is
ultrasonically tested for cracks before forming. The bridges we drive those cars over have welds
tested using magnetic particle inspection. Food cans are often x-rayed after canning to insure no
contaminants are inside. NDTI even plays a role in Homeland Security as shipping containers are
scanned for nuclear materials at sea ports and those much disputed full body scanners examine us

at airports.

This program is the culmination of the core skills learned in each of the Non Destructive Testing and
Inspection Certificates of Completion combined with the 8 credits of MATC/NDTI electives and
selected COCC general courses to round out the student's education.

One other course required is the Cooperative Work Experience where students can test drive
their new career in the real world while allowing employers to look at a potential new employee.

After approximately two years of study, students can complete the courses required to earn the AAS
Degree in Nondestructive Testing and Inspection.
