Anantiphasedomain(APD)isatypeofcrystallographicdefectinwhichtheatomsinaregionofacrystalare
configuredintheoppositeordertothoseintheperfectlatticesystem.Inotherwords,anAPDisaregionformed
fromantisitedefectsofaparentlattice.Crucially,crystalsoneithersideofanantiphasedomainboundaryare
relatedbyatranslation,ratherthanareflection(acrystaltwin)oraninversion(aninversiondomain).Ingeneral,
APDsformantiphaseboundaries(APBs)withtheparentlattice.Confusionbetweeninversiondomainsand
antiphasedomainsiscommon,eveninthepublishedliterature,andparticularlyinthecaseofGaAsgrownon
silicon.(SimilardefectsforminGaNonsilicon,wheretheyarecorrectlyidentifiedasinversiondomains).An
exampleisillustratedinthediagrambelow.[1]

(detailsarenotdiscussedhere).ThemisorientationcausestheGaandAsatomsinregionBtobeonoppositesites
comparedtothecrystalmatrix.ThepresenceoftheAPDresultsinGasites1,1,2,2,3,3beingbondedtoGa
atomsintheAPDtoformanAPB.

Inmixedoxidationstatematerialslikemagnetite,antiphasedomainsandantiphasedomainboundariescan
occurasaresultofchargeorderingeventhoughtherearenochangesinatomlocations.[2]Forexample,the
reconstructedmagnetite(100)surfacecontainsalternatingFeIIpairsandFeIIIpairsinthefirstsubsurfacelayer.[2]
AnantiphasedomainboundarycanformiftwosubsurfaceFeIIpairsmeetwhentwoterracesgrowtogether.[2]
