AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM PRESENTATION (1)

General
The Air Traffic Control (ATC) system enables data link communication
between the aircraft and the ATC centers.
The ATC system supplies flight crew and the avionics systems with
communication, navigation and surveillance means.
The data link communication between the aircraft and the ground network
is made through the communication system composed of HF Data Radio
(HFDR), VHF Data Radio (VDR) and SATCOM systems.

ATC System Architecture
The air traffic control system operates through an Air Traffic Control
(ATC) Data Link Application hosted in the CPIOM-D1.
This application exchanges data with:
-Aircraft systems (aircraft parameters),
-The Printer-1
-The ATC centers through the Avionics Communication Router (ACR)
and communication means,
-And flight crew through various Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs).
These interfaces are:
-CAPT, F/O "ATC MSG" P/Bs and loudspeakers to indicate the arrival
of an ATC message,
-CAPT, F/O Keyboard and Cursor Control Units (KCCUs) to type, file
or manage messages,
-An "ATC COM" page shown on the MultiFunction Displays (MFDs) 1
and 2. This page gives the ATC system information,
The ATC COM page is shown by selecting the "ATC COM" page on the
MFD with the cursor or with the "ATC COM" P/B available on the
KCCU,
-An ATC mailbox shown on the System Display (SD). This mailbox
shows the ATC system messages exchanged between the flight crew and

the ATC centers.

The KCCU includes a "MAIL BOX" P/B to switch the cursor from the
MFD to the ATC MAIL BOX and vice versa.

exchange between the ATC centers and the aircraft. This function sends information concerning the A/C like its A/C and
This application includes six functions, which are: tail number, etc.
-The Controller-Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC),
-The Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS), DC
-The Automatic Dependant Surveillance (ADS), The DC function lets the flight crew request and obtain departure
-The Air traffic service Facility Notification (AFN), clearances.
-The Departure Clearance (DC),
-And the Oceanic Clearance (OC). OC
The OC function lets the flight crew request and obtain oceanic
CPDLC clearances.
The CPDLC function allows a dialogue between the flight crew and
ATC by managing uplink and downlink messages.
A pre-defined set of messages and/or free text can also be sent/received
from/to the pilot or the controller.
ATIS
The ATIS function lets the flight crew request and obtain information
about terminals area conditions, coming from HF, VHF and SATCOM
antennae, such as runway, approach procedure, meteorological
parameters (weather, wind, visibility, clouds, runway surface

conditions, etc.).
ADS
The ADS function automatically generates surveillance-data reports
for transmissions to the ATC centers.
Depending on the type of ATC center needs, the ADS reports are sent:
-At periodic time intervals,
-Only when asked for,
-Whenever a specified event occurs (speed, position, altitude change,
waypoint change, etc.)
