COCKPIT LIGHTING SYSTEM PRESENTATION (1)

General
The cockpit lighting system offers the crew the most suitable lighting
environment to carry out their mission. It allows the crew to easily see
all equipment details, inscriptions and indications, whatever the level of
darkness and in all flight conditions.
For this, the cockpit lighting system is composed of:
- the cockpit general illumination,
- the instrument and panel integral lighting,
- the annunciator light test and dimming.
A big improvement of the cockpit lighting system is the exclusive use
of Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology in order to improve the cockpit
lighting homogeneity. In addition, this technology increases the source
lifetime and reduces its thermal dissipation.

Instrument and Panel Integral Lighting
The aim of the instrument and panel integral lighting is to enable the
crew to read indications and to identify controls on the various cockpit
panels in dark conditions.
For that, the INTEG LT potentiometer located on the center pedestal,
controls, via a dimming control unit, the brightness level of all the lighted
plates and Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) backlighting. They are integrated
within control panels and other lighted equipment located on the overhead
panel, the main instrument panel and the pedestal.
In addition, both potentiometers situated under the glareshield, control,
via the dimming control unit, the lighting level of all the lighted plates
and LCD backlighting located on the glareshield.

Cabin General Illumination
The cabin general illumination is composed of:
- the cabin decks general lighting,
- the spotlights,
- the staircase lighting.
Cabin Decks General Lighting
The cabin decks general lighting is composed of the Advanced
Illumination Ballast Units (AIBUs), each one is equipped with one
fluorescent tube supplying an advanced dimming capability (from
100 to 0.1%).
In baseline configuration, four light strips are installed in the upper
deck and six in the main deck. Each light strip can be separately and
zone wise scenario controlled.
Note that for light effects like mood lighting, the single ballast unit
can be replaced either by a double unit or by a hybrid unit with
red/green/blue Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).
In all cases, the cabin decks general lighting is controlled from the
FAPs, the optional Additional Attendant Panels (AAPs) and the
optional mini FAPs through the CIDS network.

Spotlights
The aim of the LED spotlights is to carry out light in cabin areas where
general lighting is not installed or where special attraction is desired,
like in entrances, cross aisles, and staircase areas. In fact the number
and the position of these spotlights depend on the customer's cabin
layout. They may participate in light scenarios and are dimmable like
the whole cabin general illumination.
The spotlights are controlled from the FAPs, the optional AAPs and
the optional mini FAPs through the CIDS network and tailored
interfaces called Spot Array Light Supply Adapters (SALSAs). Each
adapter can supply up to 12 spotlights in designated areas.
Note that a second type of spotlight with an identical appearance has
an integrated emergency light.

Staircase Lighting
The aim of the staircase lighting is to create a smooth transition from
upper deck to main deck light settings or scenarios.
The staircase lighting system is divided into the step illumination and
the ceiling illumination.
The step illumination is done by Understep LED LIghts (ULLIs),
which are installed below the footboard edge of each step and which
give sufficient illumination to the steps for safe use in all conditions.
Each staircase has one STair ELectrical Load Adapter (STELLA) to
supply the related ULLIs.
The cockpit staircase ceiling is illuminated by a short AIBU. In
standard configuration, the ceiling of the FWD and the AFT staircase
is lighted by spotlights, which are powered by SALSAs. Note that as
an option, it is possible to bring colored light into the FWD and the
AFT staircase ceiling using a COntour LED LIght (COLLI).
The staircase lighting system can be controlled from the FAPs, the
optional AAPs and the optional mini FAPs through the CIDS network.

Lavatory Lighting
General illumination in the lavatories is achieved by AIBUs with a
fluorescent tube installed on the ceiling. Additional LED lights are
installed for the mirrors and the wash tables.
In normal operation, the lavatory lighting level is predefined and depends
on the status of the door locking mechanism (OPEN, CLOSED,
LOCKED).
Moreover, it can also be switched on and off from the FAPs, the optional
AAPs and the optional mini FAPs through the CIDS network.
For cleaning and maintenance purpose, the lavatory lighting can be
switched to 100% brightness from outside the lavatory compartment.
This control is either centralized from the FAPs, the optional AAPs and
the optional mini FAPs or individual from the optional 100% light switch.
In all cases, the lavatory lighting is controlled through a specific adapter
called LAvatory Interface and Light Adapter (LAILA).

Stand-Alone Signs
Stand-alone signs are installed in areas where passengers are allowed to
stay under calm flight conditions and in staircase areas.
Three types of signs make sure that information is available in all cabin
areas: lavatory occupied, No Smoking (NS)/Fasten Seat Belts (FSB) and
Return To Seat (RTS). The backlighting system of these lighted signs is
based on LED technology.
The NS/FSB and RTS signs are controlled manually from the cockpit or
automatically according to the A/C configuration acquired from the A/C
systems. In both cases this control is done through the CIDS.
The lavatory occupied signs are lighted up by red or green LEDs in all
flight phases, depending on the condition of the assigned lavatory

General Architecture
The exterior lighting system is manually controlled from the cockpit
EXTerior LighTs panel via the Avionics Data Communication Network
(ADCN) and the secondary electrical power distribution.
Note that a direct backup connection to the secondary electrical power
distribution is also supplied in case of total ADCN failure.
Moreover, the secondary electrical power distribution includes specific
control logics which take into account some A/C system configurations
to control certain exterior lights.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING SYSTEM PRESENTATION (1)

General
The emergency lighting system is designed to give sufficient illumination
to the cabin, to identify the emergency exit areas and to fulfil safe and
quick escape from the A/C in emergency conditions. The system must
be efficient in darkness and/or in case of smoked cabin, even if no A/C
power supply is available.
The Emergency Power Supply Units (EPSUs) are the heart of the
emergency lighting system. They interface with the cockpit crew, the
cabin crew, the Cabin Intercommunication Data System (CIDS), some
A/C systems and the emergency lights.
The lights are composed of:
- the cabin ceiling emergency lights,
- the staircase emergency lights,
- the cockpit way lights,
- the floor path marking system
- the emergency slide lights,
- the emergency door lights,
- the exit signs.
Note that to reduce operating costs and to improve reliability, all
emergency lights use Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology.

General Architecture
The emergency lighting system can be controlled manually, either from
the cockpit by the EMERgency EXIT LighTs and the cockpit way light
switches, or from the cabin by the EMERgency lighting switch on the
FAPs and a second cockpit way light switch.
It can also be controlled automatically according to the A/C configuration
by the CIDS network and by some A/C systems like the Doors and Slides
Management System (DSMS) and the Electrical Power Generation System
(EPGS).
In all cases, the emergency lighting system is electrically powered by the
EPGS through 18 EPSUs.
If no AC power is available, each EPSU is able to supply the attached
emergency lighting components for at least ten minutes of operation
thanks to its integrated battery.

LIGHTS SYSTEM MAINTENANCE (1)

Lights System Safety Items
When you work on the lights system, make sure that you obey all the
AMM safety precautions. This will prevent injury to persons and/or
damage to the A/C. Here is an overview of the main safety precautions
relative to the lights system.
High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps contain mercury. If an arc tube
breaks, it is possible that the operator absorbs some mercury through the
skin.
In consequence, always wear safety gloves.
HID lamps have very high temperature in working condition; 800C on
the outer bulb and 240C on the base.
To prevent burns, let the bulb cool down for three minutes after the
switching off and disconnection before removal.
HID lamps emit some UV rays.
Thus, as a precaution, always wear safety UV glasses because of sunburn
and conjunctivitis issues.
The capacitor in the electrical circuit of the strobe light can keep a high
voltage charge for some minutes.
In consequence, do not remove the strobe light for a minimum of ten
minutes after you de-energize the electrical circuit.
