To expand, I multiply all terms in the
bracket.

To get all the candies, I unwrap the

FOIL.

I will bring the whole
bowl, not just the candies.

then unwrap the FOIL.

1. FINDING ROOTS
If you have two bowls, just make each bowl zero.

Try these:

a) (x3)(x2)=0 x=3 OR x=2. Try and sub back

b) (x5)(x+ 1)=0
1 1
c) (x )(x + )=0
3 2

d) (2 x 1)(x + 4)=0

e) (5 x + 4)(x3)

f) (x4)(5 x +1)

g) (5 x1)(2 x+ 8)

h) (x2)(3 x+3)

i) (x7)(4 x2)

j) (x+ 6)(x +1) -6,1

k) (x3)(2 x8) 3,4

l) (2 x + 4)(3 x2) -2,2/3

m) (43)( x3) -3/4,3

n) (x5)(5 x+2) -2/5,5

2. GRAPH ME!
y=1/2(x6)(x +2)

What do I know of the equation above?

If I expand all the bowls I will get x2.

Thus I will get the smiley or sad face shape.
I know it can cross x-axis ------ several times. I can find out where it cross by
several ways, but since this equation has two bowls, its easy to find where!
I know when f(x) a.k.a y is zero, that is where it crosses.
When is y=0? It is when the bowls become zero.
After I find the x which will make y=0 (the roots)
After I find these, I know that the symmetry is right between the two roots.
x 1+ x 2
Now I just find the midpoint of that. 2 .

I can now draw the axis of symmetry.

How to find the max or min point? Well, I know where the axis of symmetry is
(the x value)
Now I just sub in the x value into the equation to get y.
Now I draw up/down from the axis of symmetry

Try these: What is the max/min point of each of the equations?

Warm up, equations in bowls:
a) y=( x5)(x+1) (2,-9)

b) y=( x2)(x6)

c) y=( x+3)(x +7)

Keep going:
3
a) y= ( x1 )( x9 )
8

3
b) y= ( x +3)(x +7)
4

2
c) y= ( x +1)(x5)
3
5
d) y= ( x+ 9)( x+ 3)

FACTOR FACTOR
What are the factors of 12?

1 x 12

2x6

3x4

3 is a factor of 12, 12 is divisible by 3

Now if we have (x+3)(x+7)=x^2 +10x + 21

(x+3) is a factor of , x^2.. is divisible by (x+3)

Try these, find the factors

a) 14
b) 2x(x+3)=2x^2+6x
c) 6x^2/3x

Say I have 2 2 ,

23 22=( 2 2 2 ) ( 2 2 )=8 4=32

Its multiply for 3 times and 2x2 for 2 times, then I multiply both.
Or I can say that its 2x2 for 5 times.
If I use calculator 25 is 32.

MULTIPLY INDICES
Rules:
1. Darab
2. Bahagi
3. (2^3)^4
4. (2x7)^3=2^3x7^3

Multiplying or dividing indices. Notice that all the bases are same number for
each equation.

a) 52 53=5(2+3) =55
2 4 (2+ 4) 2
b) 5 5 =5 =5
29 9 1 9 10
c) 10

2 2
d)

e) 5

What if we have indices to the power of something? Try these:

2
=212
( 3 +3+3+ 3)
a)
( 3)=2
4
( 23 ) =(23 )(23 )(23 )
b) Cc

What if the bases are not same? Try these

3 5 3 2 5 3 10 13
a) 2 4 =2 ( 2 ) =2 2 =2

For the above, I can find the common number. For example, in a), 4 can be
written as 22. What if the numbers have no common factor, such as 2 and 5?

Now try these:

a) ( 4 5 )3=( 4 5 ) ( 4 5 ) ( 4 5 )=4 4 4 5 5 5=4 3 53

Lets use many rules together!

2
Example: ( 32 98 )

The bases are not same, but I know that 3 2 is 9

8 2
( 32 98 ) =(3 2 ( 3 2 ) )
2

m 8
I know that ( a n) =a nm . So, ( 32 ) =( 32 8 ) =(316 )

8 2
( 32 98 ) =(3 2 ( 3 3 ) )
2 2 16 2
=( 3 3 )

I also know that ( a n am ) =an +m . So, ( 32 316 ) =32+16=3 18

8 2
( 32 98 ) =(3 2 ( 3 3 ) )
2 2 2
=( 32 316 ) =( 318 )
