rights and diversity, have released the names
of 18 longtime LGBT movement leaders and
activists who will serve as honorary co-chairs
and advisers to the march.
Among them are David Mixner, author, civil
rights activist and co-organizer of the 2009
LGBT Equality March on Washington, and
Trump budget assailed
as cruel and callous

7th Circuit affirms bathroom access for trans student
Court unanimously says
Title IX bars discrimination

In another legal decision arming
federal law ensures bathroom access for
transgender students, a federal appeals
court has determined a transgender student
in Wisconsin must be allowed access to
restrooms at his high school consistent with
his gender identity.
In a 35-page decision, a three-judge panel
the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled
unanimously in favor of Ashton Whitaker, a
17-year-old who sued Kenosha Unied School
District for requiring him to use a restroom
separate from one used by all other students.
Writing for the court, U.S. Circuit
Judge Ann Claire Williams, an Obama
appointee, determined Title IX of the
Education Amendment of 1972, which bars
discrimination in schools on the basis of sex,
applies to Ashs situation.
A policy that requires an individual to use
a bathroom that does not conform with his or
her gender identity punishes that individual
for his or her gender non-conformance, which
in turn violates Title IX, Williams writes.
Joining Williams in the decision was U.S.
Circuit Judge Ilana Rovner, an appointee of
George W. Bush, and U.S. Circuit Judge Diane
Wood, a Clinton appointee.
The decision upholds a preliminary
injunction U.S. District Judge Pamela Pepper,
an Obama appointee, issued in September
requiring Kenosha Unied School District to
change its policy.
Ash said in a statement hes thrilled the
Seventh Circuit determined that Peppers
decision should stand as the litigation and his
studies continue.

year from being threatened with discipline
and being constantly monitored by school

courts injunction in September allowed me to

on my classes, after-school activities, applying
to college, and building lasting friendships,
Ash said.
According to the court decision, Ashs school
informed him after he transitioned he couldnt
use the boys restroom, onlythe girls restroom
or a gender-neutral facility some distance from
his classes. Fearful of missing class and being
punished for being late, Ash limited his water
intake in school so he wouldnt have touse the
restroom, but suered health consequences
as a result. Ash several times contemplated
suicide, the decision says.
Williams cites as a precedent for interpreting
Title IX to apply to Ash the U.S. Supreme Court
rulings in Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins in 1989
and Oncale v. Sundowner Oshore Services
in 1998, which instructs schools to construe

sex stereotyping as sex discrimination. Also
cited is the 7th Circuits recent in decision in
Hively v. Ivy Tech Community College, which
determined anti-gay bias is sex discrimination
under the law.
The School District argues that even
under a sex-stereotyping theory, Ash cannot
demonstrate a likelihood of success on his
Title IX claim because its policy is not based on
whether the student behaves, walks, talks, or
dresses in a manner that is inconsistent with
any preconceived notions of sex stereotypes,
Williams writes. Instead, it contends that as
a matter of law, requiring a biological female
to use the womens bathroom is not sex-
stereotyping. However, this view is too narrow.
By denition, a transgender individual does
not conform to the sex-based stereotypes of
the sex that he or she was assigned at birth.
The 7th Circuit ruling is the latest in a series
of court decisions that have determinedTitle

explicit mention of transgender students.

Cancellation of OutGames events
prompts fraud probe
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. Organizers of the World OutGames Miamis decision to
abruptly cancel almost all of its sporting events has prompted local authorities
to launch a fraud investigation.
Organizers told participants in an email they sent on May 26 that nancial
challenges prompted them to cancel the opening and closing ceremonies and
sports programming with the exception of aquatics, country western dance and
soccer.
The opening ceremony was scheduled to take place in Miami Beach on May
27.
LGBT athletes from around the world had already traveled to South Florida to
participate in the games that were scheduled to take place through June 4 when
organizers made their announcement. The World OutGames Miami Human
Rights Conference took place as scheduled at a Miami Beach hotel, although
attendance was far lower than expected.

The Miami Heraldreportedthe city of Miami Beach spent $200,000 to sponsor
the OutGames and waved permit fees associated with events. The newspaper
alsosaidMiami-Dade County agreed to reimburse $18,000 in expenses.
The Miami Herald reported Miami Beach ocials in recent months grew
increasingly concerned that games organizers were unable to meet their
fundraising goals. It obtained a memo from City Manager Jimmy Morales on
May 25 that said OutGames ocials had not paid a $5,000 deposit for event
permits and they owed the National Hotel, which was the games ocial hotel, a
substantial amount of money.
The city of Miami Beach is deeply concerned to hear that the World
OutGames has decided to cancel their opening and closing ceremonies and
sports programming, with the exception of soccer, aquatics and country western
dance, said the city of Miami Beach on May 26 in a statement.
City sta has worked consistently for the past several months to assist
the event producers with special events planning and permitting; fundraising
eorts; relocating events to low or no cost venues; assisting with local partners
to provide support and access and providing nancial support to cover police
stang costs, it added. As a lead sponsor of the event, the city also waived
all related special event and permitting fees for this event and provided cash
sponsorship to the OutGames.
Melissa Berthier, a spokesperson for the city of Miami Beach, on May 26 also
conrmed to the Miami New Times that the Miami Beach Police Department and
the Miami-Dade County State Attorneys Oce have opened an investigation.
Due to the potential misappropriation of funds, the Miami Beach Police
Department and the State Attorneys Oce have conferred and are jointly
opening a fraud investigation, she said.
OutGames CEO Ivan Cano has yet to publicly comment.
Miami is the rst U.S. city to host the OutGames, which the Gay and Lesbian
International Sport Association licenses. D.C. is among the three nalists to host
the Gay Games which the Federation of Gay Games organizes in 2022.
The Federation of Gay Games sought to enter into an agreement with the
Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association that would have created a new
organization that would have organized a quadrennial LGBT sporting, cultural
and human rights event. The Federation of Gay Games in March 2016 announced
its board of directors had unanimously voted not to partner with the Gay and
Lesbian International Sport Association.

Has Wells Fargo learned from pipeline, prison controversies?
Gay VP says bank has
changed, highlights record
of LGBT support

The lending practices of Wells Fargo
& Company, one of the nations largest
banks, came under re by a group of
local LGBT activists in early May when
they demanded that D.C.s Capital Pride
Alliance drop the bank as one of its
corporate sponsors.
The group No Justice No Pride pointed
out that Wells Fargo is providing
nancing for the controversial Dakota
Access Pipeline, which is being opposed
by environmentalists and Native
American tribes.
Members of the group said Wells
Fargo also continues to nance at least
two companies that operate private
prisons that the ACLU has said have a
history of mistreating inmates, including
undocumented immigrants.
No Justice No Pride members argued
at a Capital Pride Alliance board meeting
on May 8 that LGBT people were among
the indigenous peoples being negatively
impacted by the pipeline construction.
The groups members said LGBT
people, especially transgender women
of color, were also among those being
mistreated in private prisons to which
Wells Fargo was lending money.
Capital Pride ocials promised to
reassess their criteria for accepting
corporate sponsors. But they said
arrangements for this years Capital
Pride parade and festival set for June
10-11 were too far along for them to
make changes in corporate sponsors at
this time.
Although Capital Prides president,
Bernie Delia, noted that Wells Fargo has
a good record on LGBT issues, the mega
banks policies and actions on LGBT
matters were largely overlooked in the
discussion over its lending practices.
Among the developments mostly
overlooked was that the Human
Rights Campaign Foundations
annual Corporate Equality Index has
consistently given Wells Fargo a perfect
100 percent rating on its personnel
policies pertaining to LGBT employees.
In its rating, HRC Foundation notes that
Wells Fargo & Company fully complies
with or carries out nine specic criteria
related to LGBT employees, including
a non-discrimination policy that covers
sexual orientation and gender identity
and expression, full benets for
employees same-sex partners, and a
transgender-inclusive health insurance

He said Wells Fargo adopted its non-
discrimination policy for transgender
employees in 2004, long before most
other private sector employers adopted
such a policy.
Bernacki said Wells Fargo passes with

SAGE; and the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight
Education Network, which advocates for

Wasserman Schultz: U.S. foreign policy

broad goals, even if it meant sacricing our values that matter to us when it
comes to human rights.
Tillerson told State Department employees in a May 3 speech that in some
circumstances, if you condition our national security eorts on someone
adopting our values, we probably cant achieve our national security goals or
our national security interests.
If we condition too heavily that others must adopt this value that weve come
to over a long history of our own, it really creates obstacles to our ability to
advance our national security interests, our economic interests, he said.
To me that is morally repugnant and unacceptable to suggest that we would
ever set aside or drop o the priority list standing up for the human rights
and the values that go with that as Americans in American foreign policy, said
Wasserman Schultz.
She noted the ongoing crackdown against gay men in Chechnya. She also
pointed out the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia
which commemorates the World Health Organizations decision to declassify
homosexuality as a mental disorder took place on May 17.

EXCLUSIVE: Cuban LGBT activist faces growing persecution

CIENFUEGOS, Cuba An independent
Cuban activist says the government
continues to target him because he
publicly criticizes President Ral Castros
daughter who spearheads LGBT-specic
issues on the communist island.
Nelson Gandulla, president of the
Cuban Foundation for LGBTI Rights, told
the Washington Blade on May 16 during
an exclusive interview at his home on the
outskirts of the city of Cienfuegos that
three security ocials interrogated him
for two and a half hours last December.
Gandulla told the Blade the
interrogation took place on Dec. 10
International Human Rights Day that
commemorates the ratication of the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
by the U.N. General Assembly in 1948
in Cienfuegos, which is roughly three
hours southeast of Havana on Cubas
southern coast.
Gandulla said he had just returned
from Switzerland and Spain where
he participated in a U.N. forum and
met with several ocials. Gandulla
also criticized Mariela Castro, director
of Cubas National Center for Sexual
Education, while he was in Europe.
The interrogation about which
Gandulla spoke to the Blade took place
15 days after Mariela Castros uncle,
former Cuban President Fidel Castro,
died. His ashes were interred at Santa
Igenia Cemetery in the city of Santiago
on Dec. 4.
Gandulla said the authorities who
interrogated him threatened to kill him
and told him something could happen
to my family and me. Gandulla told
the Blade the authorities also said they
could take me to prison for contempt
for attacking Mariela Castros authority.
Gandulla, who is a doctor, said the
authorities also threatened to rescind
his medical license and prevent him
from leaving Cuba.
I was accused of being a worm, a
mercenary, he told the Blade. They
told me that I was an employee of the
CIA and that they could also accuse me
of the crime of illicit misappropriation of
funds and economic activity.

that focused on documenting human
rights abuses.
Gandulla told the Blade he and his
partner returned to Cienfuegos two days
later. He said they were arrested when
they asked local immigration ocials
why he was prevented from leaving the
country.
Gandulla said authorities took their
passports and cell phones and placed his
partner in a cell. He told the Blade they
accused him of having a clandestine
Internet network inside his home, even
though the only thing he said they found
was a DirecTV receiver.
Gandulla said authorities took pictures
of his home as they walked through it.
He told the Blade they also had
witnesses who showed their
discontent over yers the Cuban
Foundation for LGBTI Rights distributed
throughout the country that talk about
the Cuban reality.
Gandulla had a poster on the outside
of his home that described Mariela
Castro as a fraud when the Blade
visited it in 2015.
He told the Blade those who criticized
the Cuban Foundation for LGBTI Rights
yers in January were prisoners.
Gandulla told the Blade authorities
ned him the equivalent of $60. His
salary is roughly $45 a month.
Gandulla said police on May 3 detained
his partner because he was working as
a journalist without ocial government
credentials. He told the Blade agents
interrogated him for two hours and took
his camera, cell phone and tripod.
They wanted to send him to prison
for illicit economic activities, Gandulla
told the Blade in an email shortly after
the alleged incident took place. They

wanted to say that he receives money
from abroad, which is not the case.
He has never received money. They
threatened him that if they saw him on
the street lming or with a camera he
would go directly to prison without a
trial.
Gandulla also alleges authorities
prevented him from traveling to Havana
in order to attend a May 12 meeting with
Equality Florida CEO Nadine Smith and
other U.S. LGBT advocates.
Gandulla told the Blade he received
a summons that ordered him to report
to police headquarters in Cienfuegos at
8 a.m. on May 12 for an interrogation.
The meeting began in Havana at the
same time.
Gandulla said the police called him on
May 11 and told him he wasnt able to
go to work the next day because the
director of Cienfuegos local health oce
was going to be visiting. He told the
Blade the police also told him he could
not leave Cienfuegos province.
Gandulla said a police ocer came to
his home before then-President Obama
visited Cuba in March 2016 and asked
whether he was going to move around
Cuba or my province in the coming days.
Gandulla told the Blade he was publicly
admonished in front of his colleagues
last October after he traveled abroad
and his salary was reduced by 25 percent
for three months.
He said he was unable to work for
several months. Gandulla told the Blade
he has started working in another oce
and his salary has been restored.
He told the Blade that authorities have
repeatedly threatened to send him to
prison and regularly harass activists who
work with his organization. Gandulla
also said the Cuban government has
placed him under surveillance.

shortly after the interview began.
A police ocer on a motorcycle
stopped this reporter while driving on
the highway between Cienfuegos and
Cubas Autopista Nacional roughly an
hour after leaving Gandullas home.
The police ocer asked for this
reporters passport, visa, drivers
license and Cuban press credentials. He
returned to his motorcycle and began
speaking to someone through his radio.
The police ocer wrote something down
on a piece of paper before returning to
this reporters car less than 10 minutes
later and allowing him to drive away
after returning his documents.
Gandulla has criticized Mariela Castro
in previous interviews with the Blade and
other international media outlets. He told
the Blade the governments persecution
of him is worse now because we and the
foundation are more visible.
We are doing things, said
Gandulla.
We dont have any type of
legal recognition from the Cuban
authorities, he added, referring to the
Cuban Foundation for LGBTI Rights
and other groups and advocates who
are not affiliated with the National
Center for Sexual Education. They
have turned us into illegal people
inside of Cuba and describe us as
dissidents.
Gandulla spoke to the Blade a
day before Mariela Castro led a
march in the city of Santa Clara that
commemorated the International
Day Against Homophobia and
Transphobia.

Macron discusses gay Chechnya
crackdown with Putin
French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday said he discussed the
crackdown against gay Chechens with his Russian counterpart.
We discussed the situation of LGBT people in Chechnya, wrote Macron on
his Twitter page after he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Palace
of Versailles outside Paris. I very specically told President Putin what Frances
expectations are.
Macron also noted the crackdown against gay Chechens as he spoke at a
press conference with Putin.
Chechnya is a predominantly Muslim semi-autonomous Russian republic in
the North Caucuses.
Novaya Gazeta, an independent Russian newspaper, reported last month that
Chechen authorities have arrested more than 100 gay men since February.
Novaya Gazeta has said some of the men who have been arrested have been
beaten, tortured or even killed. Reports also indicate Chechen authorities have
sent them to secret prisons that have been described as concentration camps.
Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, who is a close ally of Russian President
Vladimir Putin, and the Kremlin have downplayed or even dismissed the reports
that gay men have been arrested. Novaya Gazeta reported last week that the
Russian government has launched an investigation into the crackdown.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier this month raised Chechnya with
Putin during their meeting that took place in Russia. British Prime Minister
Theresa May and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are among the other world
leaders who have condemned the crackdown.
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley in an April 17 statement said the U.S.
remains disturbed by the arrests of the gay Chechen men.
The State Department last month urged the Russian government to investigate
them. President Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have neither publicly
commented on the arrests nor urged the Russian government to pressure
Chechen authorities to stop their crackdown.
Macron on May 7 defeated Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Front in the
second round of Frances presidential election.
Macron accused Russian hackers of targeting his campaign in the days leading
up to the election. The Russian government has repeatedly denied it sought to
inuence the outcome of the French election, even though Putin met with Le
Pen at the Kremlin on March 24.
The rst round of the French presidential election took place on April 23.

He and Bettel had been in a civil partnership when Bettel became prime minister

Taiwan recognizes same-sex marriage
Taiwan on Wednesday became the rst Asian country to legally recognize same-sex
marriage.
The Taiwanese Constitutional Court ruled the provision of the islands civil code
that does not allow two persons of the same sex to create a permanent union of
intimate and exclusive nature for the committed purpose of managing a life together
is unconstitutional.
The ruling orders lawmakers to amend or enact relevant laws within two years.
Same-sex couples will be able to legally marry if they fail to meet this deadline.
The Associated Press reported same-sex marriage supporters who were gathered
outside the Taiwanese legislature in Taipei, the islands capital, reacted to the ruling with
rapturous applause.
Chi Chia-wei, a prominent gay rights advocate, rst tried to register a marriage to his
partner in 1986.
The Taiwanese Constitutional Court ruled against Chi in 2015. He once again
challenged the constitutionality of the islands same-sex marriage ban and the Taipei
City Governments Department of Civil Aairs joined his case.
The court heard the lawsuit in March.
An amendment to include same-sex marriage in the countrys civil code passed a
preliminary review by the Committee of the Legislative Yuan (Taiwans Parliament) late
last year.
President Tsai Ing-wen is among those who publicly support marriage rights for same-
sex couples. The Alliance of Religious Groups for the Love of Families Taiwan continues
to oppose eorts to allow gays and lesbians to tie the knot on the island.
After waiting for two months, we nally witness the grand justices marking a new
milestone in the history of gender movements as well as the constitution of Taiwan,
said the Marriage Equality Coalition, a Taiwanese advocacy group, in a statement
after the court announced its ruling. This is the rst time that an interpretation of the
constitution declares the discriminations embedded in Taiwanese laws against the
LGBTQ community unconstitutional, as they violate the fundamental rights of equality
and marriage freedom granted by the constitution.

the extent of cuts in the budget was a
surprise.
Among the more drastic cuts is a $186
million reduction in Centers for Disease
Control funding for HIV/AIDS, Viral
Hepatitis, STIs, and TB prevention. A full
$150 million of the reduction wouldcome
from HIV/AIDS prevention programs.
We would have probably a million
fewer HIV tests because of that and we
dont know how many more people will
become [HIV] positive and not get the
messages, Schmid said.
Although the CDC doesnt provide PrEP
as a means of HIV prevention, the agency
conducts education on the medication,
which could be impaired as a result of the
cuts, Schmid said.
For research, on the chopping block is
the National Institutes for Health, which
handles HIV/AIDS research for the federal
government and was working on a cure
under President Obama. The budget seeks

magnitude, Schmid said. Its around 19
percent of all HIV prevention funding would
be cut. We knew that they were going to cut
research, but its around 17 percent.
The budget blueprint identied as a
high priority the Ryan White Health Care
Act, which provides assistance to low-
income people with HIV/AIDS, as well as
funding for global AIDS, but the budget
also contains some rollbacks for those
programs.
For Ryan White, the budget seeks a
$59 million reduction to the program
as a result of cutting $34 million from
programs for children, youth, women and
families and $25 million for programs of
special signicance.
Schmid said the program cuts under
the proposed budget arent direct services
programs to ensure low-income people
have access to HIV/AIDS medication, but
training programs aimed at gay men,
transgender women and people of color.
Most Ryan White funding does go out
to grants for direct services and health
care medications, things like that, but this
is ways to improve and to train people,
especially in a changing environment,
Schmid said.
As pointed out by the LGBT group
GLAAD, among the programs of special
signicance is an initiative that seeks to
enhance HIV service delivery interventions
for transgender women of color at nine
delivery sites throughout the country.
This budget would pull the rug
from under some of Americas most
marginalized communities, including
transgender women of color, at a time
when they need our help the most, said
GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. President
Trumps budget is heartless and the latest
example of the administration working to
systematically erase LGBTQ Americans
from the fabric of this nation.
According to the Health Global Access
Project, the proposed funding would
decrease the Global Fund to Fight AIDS,
Tuberculosis and Malaria and PEPFAR by
17 percent each, making more than $1
billion in cuts to the programs despite
assurances global AIDS funding would
remain intact.
The Trump administrations rst budget been far too costly in American lives and
is a gift to billionaires at the expense of
millions of peoples lives including
more than 19 million people with HIV who
dont and wont have access to life-saving
treatment if this $1 billion cut to global
AIDS programs becomes reality, said
Health GAP Executive Director Asia Russell.
Shame on the Trump administration
for showing no regard for peoples lives
and cutting highly eective, life-saving
programs to the bone.
Consistent with the Republican plan
to repeal and replace Obamacare, the
budget proposal also seeks to eliminate
$800 billion in Medicaid. Thats a major of
source of assistance for people with HIV/
AIDS because an estimated 40 percent of
them are on Medicaid.
Doug Wirth, CEO of the New York-
based health care non-prot Amida Care,
said in a statement the cuts to HIV/AIDS
programs proposed in the budget are
unprecedented and represent a cruel
and callous attack on millions of hard-
working Americans.
Funding for health care is not just a
number on a balance sheet for many
people, its a matter of life and death,
Wirth said. These ruthless cuts will
reverse our hard-earned progress in the
ght against AIDS. It harkens back to
the years of inaction under the Reagan
administration that fueled the growth of
the AIDS epidemic an epidemic that has
taxpayer dollars.
Defending the budget proposal at
the White House after it was unveiled,
Director of the Oce of Management &
Budget Mick Mulvaney said the request
is a taxpayer rst budget because it
takes into account the eectiveness of
government programs.
Compassion needs to be on both sides
of that equation, Mulvaney said. Yes,
you have to have compassion for folks
who are receiving the federal funds, but
also you have to have compassion for
the folks who are paying it. And that is
one of the things that is new about this
presidents budget.
Mulvaney also downplayed the cuts
to Medicaid, saying the administrations
proposals would return authority to the
states and wouldnt be as steep as estimated.
There are no Medicaid cuts in terms of
what ordinary human beings would refer
to as a cut, Mulvaney said. We are not
spending less money one year than we
spent before. What we are doing is growing
Medicaid more slowly over the 10-year
budget window than the Congressional
Budget Oce says that we should or says
that we will under current law.
It remains to be seen whether Congress
which has ultimate authority over the
purse will agree to the cuts, although
with both chambers under Republican
control and seeking to reduce federal
government, that would seem likely.
Schmid said HIV/AIDS advocates are
bringing the ghts against the cuts to
Capitol Hill, hoping the historic bipartisan
support for HIV/AIDS funding would
restore at least some funds.
Ryan White and everything is
bipartisan and theres more and more
people in program than before, Schmid
said. So, were going to ght it. I think
we have a receptive audience on the Hill,
but he is the president, and the way they
deal, it seems they go big and then they
get something, so we are concerned that
NIH will be cut. We are concerned in the
end, that CDC HIV prevention will be cut.

R.I. House votes to ban conversion therapy

PROVIDENCE, R.I. The House of Representatives has voted to pass a bill that
would bar licensed health care providers from using so-called gay conversion
therapy to change a minors sexual orientation or gender identity, the Associated
Press reports.
The House voted 69-0 to pass the bill Tuesday, May 30 with six legislators not
voting. It now moves to the state Senate. Nevada and Connecticut this month
became the latest to ban the practice, joining New Jersey, California, Oregon,
Illinois, New York, Vermont and New Mexico.
At the committee hearing on the bill earlier this spring, testimony was
overwhelmingly in favor of the bill. Nearly 90 people testied, many telling
compelling, deeply personal stories of their experiences. Only one person
testied against the bill, the AP reports.
Rhode Islands proposal would prohibit psychologists, social workers and other
licensed health care professionals from using practices that treat homosexuality
as an illness and try to cure it in children under 18 years old. Violations could be
subject to disciplinary action or revocation of licenses by the state department
of health, the AP reports.
Numerous national and international medical associations, including the
American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association,
the American Medical Association Council on Scientic Aairs, the American
Psychoanalytic Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Association of
Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, have issued statements against
or otherwise taken action against conversion therapy.
Conversion therapy is worse than ineective; it can be extremely harmful,
especially in children, said Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence), the
primary sponsor of the bill, according to the AP article.

Mental health issues plague LGBT students

LOS ANGELES College students who belong to sexual minority groups are
more likely to seek help for mental health problems than their straight peers,
but they still face many barriers to using on-campus mental health services,
according to a new RAND Corporation study, MedicalXpress reports.
Researchers found that students who identify themselves as LGBT were more
likely to use o-campus mental health services than their straight peers and
were more likely to report being deterred by barriers such as concerns over
condentiality and uncertainty over eligibility for on-campus services.
The ndings are from one of the largest surveys ever of college students about
mental health issues. More than 33,000 students from 33 public four-year and
two-year colleges in California were surveyed about mental health needs during
2013. The study was published online by the Journal of Adolescent Health.
Its encouraging that college students who identify as sexual minorities are
more likely to utilize mental health services, but our ndings suggest there is
a need to develop campus-based mental health services tailored to this group
and address barriers to using them, said Michael S. Dunbar, lead author of
the study and an associate behavioral scientist at RAND, a nonprot research
organization.
The study found that 7 percent roughly one in 15 of the students
surveyed identied as LGBT or questioning. Compared to straight students,
sexual minority students had higher rates of psychological distress (26 versus
18 percent), were more likely to report academic impairment related to mental
health problems (17 versus 11 percent) and reported higher overall levels of
stress over the past month (63 versus 55 percent).
Members of sexual minority groups were nearly twice as likely to have used
some type of mental health services during their time in college (31 versus 18
percent). Among all students, most of those who reported serious psychological
distress did not use mental health services, MedicalXpress reports.
Among students who needed services but didnt get them on campus, sexual
minority individuals were more likely than their straight peers to report specic
barriers to using on-campus mental health services.
The RAND study analyzed information from a survey about mental health
completed by students from nine University of California campuses, nine
California State University campuses and 15 California community colleges. The
results were weighted to help reect the states overall college student opulation,
MedicalXpress reports.

The uncomfortable ride to progress
Understanding privilege
and diversity in a
changing culture

What if I told you that a train was pull-
ing into the station that would take you
to a destination that possessed all the re-
sources you needed to be wealthy, to nd
true love, to live a long and fullling life
youd run to make that train wouldnt
you? But what If I also told you that
the ride was long, you would not have
a seat, the cars were hot and crowded,
there would be no food or drink, etc.
would you still get on? Would you stay the
course to reap the reward at the end? In
other words, how uncomfortable of a ride
would you be willing to endure in order to
reach a better destination?
Athletes learn very early in their careers
that most of their days will be lled with
doing things that make them uncomfort-
able. But they adapt, and get comfortable
with the idea of being uncomfortable.
They are called upon to confront issues
beyond the scope of sports, and learn to
stand by their actions and very publically
live their truth.
Most members of society never face
that type of scrutiny. They form opinions,
and very often compartmentalize their
views and beliefs in ways that are com-
fortable, and often contradictory. Many
share these opinions on social media, but
beyond Facebook posts or Tweets, how
are we actually held accountable for what
we believe, or the consequences for act-
ing on those beliefs?
The problem is that we have become
a society that ghts for our own, and if
a particular ght doesnt directly impact
us, we do not think to ght it. If I am a
wealthy woman on the Upper East Side
of Manhattan, why bother caring about
what happened in Ferguson, Missouri? If
I am a straight man in corporate America,
why should I expend my time and re-
sources to help the LGBTQ community?
This mindset is what has led to the
terms privilege and entitlement being
thrown around so much these days. If
you want to know the meaning of privi-
lege, I would say that if you possess the
rights that you would expect to have in a
democracy, then you have privilege. Dont
get me wrong; I believe that there is no
shame in having privilege you are ei-
ther born with it or youre not. However,
if you take your privilege for granted, and
become complacent in your own comfort,
doing nothing to help those without it,
that is when you become entitled.
I believe that sports are yet another
glaring example of our entitlement. The
sports industry is one of the most prot-
able and powerful in this country. Sports
have always been a way to engage and
unite people, but to what end? As a play-
er, when you are oered a scholarship or
contract, you develop a sense of loyalty
to your teammates, your university, the
city you play for you devote yourself to
them. Now undoubtedly, the fans pledge
that same loyalty back to your team, but
do they pledge it to you? Do they care
where you come from, your stance on so-
cial issues, what your political aliations
are? Would they support you if you spoke
out on an issue that made them uncom-
fortable? Moreover, are they cheering
for their team to win, but supporting laws
and societal norms that continue to mar-
ginalize the majority of the players that
comprise the team?
Lets look at the universities that make
the most money in college sports. The
top ve grossing universities are Texas
A&M ($192.6 million), University of Texas
($183.5 million), Ohio State University
($167.2 million), University of Michigan
($152.5 million), and University of Ala-
bama ($148.9 million). In fact, across the
country, if you look at college football
alone, $3.5 billion is generated annually
by these disproportionally Black teams.
I say disproportionally because when
you look at the data, you quickly begin
to see a pattern. In 2012, only 14 percent
of undergraduates were Black. In a 2013
University of Pennsylvania study, a mere
2.8 percent of full-time degree-seeking
undergraduates were Black men. Now,
lets have a look at the number of Black
players on the football teams. Black men
account for an average of 57 percent of
college football teams across the country,
while at certain universities, that percent-
age reaches far higher. The 2016-2017
basketball team at the University of Ken-
tucky has a roster that is 80 percent Black.
These universities are raking in money
from the students on their teams, while
these amateur players see almost none
of it. In fact, many of these players have
to scramble to nd money for housing,
books and food.
Consider how many people attend and
watch these games, surrounded by peo-
ple who look like them, think like them,
live like them. This is a culture we cre-
ated over time, where Black people can
entertain our country and people can en-
joy the entertainment, but never actually
have to interact with them, let alone con-

sider their views or their experiences. So
when do we become accountable for our
entitlement, and make changes that will
begin to unite and engage us beyond the
sports arena or entertainment?
As both the idea and the reality of di-
versity continue to expand in our country,
we all need to catch up, or we will get left
behind.
So, what if we all started to stand up for
diversity not out of moral obligation,
but because we took a look at what it
means for the bottom lines of the corpo-
rations and teams that we value so dear-
ly. We need to begin to think of diversity
as a competitive advantage. Whether we
are examining a Fortune 500 company or
a Big Ten football team, one constant is
that the future lies with a new generation
of talent. This is a generation of transpar-
ency, of people living their truths, one
that sees the spectrum of color, that is
comfortable with gender equality. The
message of this generation is no longer
tolerance of diversity but rather, em-
bracing it.
This spring, the Arizona Wildcats be-
came the rst NCAA football team to
grant a scholarship to an openly gay
football player. In fact, when My-King
Johnson a 64, 225 pound high school
player with a 3.8 GPA told his recruiter,
Wildcats defensive line coach and former
NFL player, Vince Amey that he was gay,
Ameys response was simple, Look, you
are who you are, I am who I am, and Im
going to coach you the same way. Im
going to treat you the same wayYou
do what you doWhen the players nd
out, especially my room, Im going to tell
(those) dudes: look, you gotta have his
back. I applaud Amey and the Wildcats
for making a decision to recruit Johnson.
However, I am still disheartened that his
sexual preference remains a factor in the
decision at all. But we must begin some-
where.
We have entered into a period of time
where people want to prove discrimina-
tion does not exist by pretending that
they do not see diversity. But I would ar-
gue that people do this because they do
not want to be made to feel uncomfort-
able by actually having to confront it.

Our delinquent fourth grader of a presi-
dent, who treats the ship of state like a toy sail-
boat rigged with recrackers, did us proud last
week as he arrived in Israel from Saudi Arabia
and announced he had just returned from the
Middle East.
A brief respite from mortication came
several days later in Brussels when Gauth-
ier Destenay, husband of Luxembourg

spouses of other NATO leaders. Turkeys

Republican lawmakers only pretend to care
Hogan, Comstock show
their true colors

Its time to call out and defeat those Re-
publicans who pretend to really care about
anyone other than rich white straight
people. For too long we have given them
a pass if they just speak out against the
worst rhetoric and actions of the far right.
Speaking out isnt enough when their ac-
tions dont match the moderate records
they try to convince us they have.
One example of the pitfalls of believing
someone who pretends he is a moderate
occurred recently when Maryland Repub-
lican Gov. Larry Hogan vetoed a bill that
would have benetted hundreds of thou-
moment for gay visibility, if you ignore
his conspicuous omission from a White
House photo caption.
Alas, the funny memes about orbs and
hand-slaps during 45s foreign trip did not
dispel the threats his far-right regime poses:
Recalcitrance on the Paris climate accords that
isolates America from the other G-7 nations.
A radical upward redistribution of wealth dis-
guised as a healthcare bill that the Congressio-
nal Budget Oce says will rob 23 million peo-
ple of their healthcare. An attorney general
who demands the harshest criminal sentenc-
es, undermining recent bipartisan movement
on sentencing reform. A HUD secretary who
says poverty is a state of mind. (Should Ben
Carson really bring that up when his bosss
state of mind is a matter of global concern?)
Trump is the rst president since World
War II to raise doubts about Americas will-
ingness to defend her allies. A man who
made a career of skipping out on his busi-
ness obligations brazenly lectured heads of
state as if they were contractors. A man who
atters tyrants was eager to insult Germany.
A man who cannot restrain his compulsive
boasting put at risk highly sensitive informa-
tion regarding the defense of America and
the nations that shared it with us.
Back at home, a cruel budget was re-
sands of workers. Another is how Vir-
ginias 10th District Republican Congress-
woman Barbara Comstock casts her rst
vote each congressional term for Speaker
Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) thereby allowing him
to set the House of Representatives
agenda and appoint committees making
any challenge she would like us to believe
she made to what he is doing worthless.
In the case of Hogan, he vetoed a rea-
sonable bill passed by the Maryland Legis-
lature mandating earned sick leave of ve
days for workers in all companies with
more than 15 employees. Having man-
aged and been CEO of organizations with
from 3 to more than 50 people I always
gave my employees at least ve days of
earned sick leave, it was never an issue.
Hogan suggested it apply only to orga-
nizations with more than 50 employees
and said he would sign some executive
orders on the issue and look to compro-
mise with the Democratic legislature. But
the Washington Post reported, Delegate
Luke Clippinger (D-Baltimore) who was
lead sponsor of the bill said Hogans exec-
utive orders were the actions of a gover-
nor who is just pretending to care about
the hundreds of thousands of workers
leased that would decimate the social
safety net, slash public education, hobble
diplomacy, and jack up the defense budget
based on the oft-repeated howler that the
largest military in the world is a weakling
getting sand kicked in its face. Trumps bud-
get may be dead on arrival as some declare,
but many of its destructive proposals are
popular with congressional Republicans.
Set aside the daily parade of revelations
from Russiagate. The machinery of our
government is in the hands of a spoiled
princeling who holds himself above the
law and demands loyalty to himself in-
stead of the Constitution, a bully given to
demonizing the independent press whose
scrutiny of public ocials is a bulwark of
our republic, while he lls his press room
with right-wing delusion dealers.
This is not normal, and is funny only in a
dark, alarming sense. Captain Jack Sparrow,
whose swishbuckling piracy has returned
to movie screens, would be a steadier com-
mander-in-chief.
We can take some comfort from the signs
of Republican chickens coming home to roost.
One is the latest uproar at Fox News, this
time over Sean Hannitys reckless conspiracy
mongering, while a Fox News crew conrmed
Guardian reporter Ben Jacobss account of his
who would lose paid sick leave under his
veto. Clippinger said despite the gover-
nors call for a compromise, he has never
received a call from Hogan or his sta in
the past three years to discuss the issue.
The idea that workers dont have the right
to earn sick leave is nothing other than
obscene. How many sick days did the gov-
ernor use for his recent illness?
Then there is Comstock, who pretends
to care about the people in her District,
but refuses to hold a town hall to con-
verse with them. Her rst vote each term
has been for the Republican speaker
who then sets the agenda and appoints
the committees of the House. That vote
allowed him to pass the Aordable Care
Act repeal bill through committees he ap-
pointed. In fact we know during the rst
eort to pass the ACA repeal legislation
she actually committed to vote yes be-
fore the bill was pulled. Then in the nal
version of the bill, which passed by one
vote, they didnt need her vote so she
could get away with pretending she actu-
ally opposed it.
Other issues that her vote for Ryan im-
pacted include LGBT civil rights. While the
Equality Bill now has more than 190 co-

assault by Montana Congressman-elect Greg
Gianforte. The Capitol Hill presence of Gian-
forte, whose apology failed to make him t
for oce, will be an albatross around Speaker
Ryans neck and a reminder of the raw thug-
gery that Trump rode into power.
House Freedom Caucus Chair Mark Mead-
ows (R-N.C.) feigned surprise when the CBO
nally released its scoring of the American
Health Care Act that Meadows helped write.
He choked back tears after reporters showed
him that the state waivers he supported could
drive patients with pre-existing conditions out
of the market.
Even if we buy the sincerity of Meadows
showing compassion for those who are suf-
fering, his display does nothing to alter his par-
tys heedless and inhumane attitudes and be-
havior. I can only quote immortal songstress
Ella Fitzgerald: Now you say youre sorry for
being so untrue. Well, you can cry me a river,
cry me a river, cause I cried, I cried, I cried a
river over you.
Those who would turn America to splin-
ters can cry all they like after we have driven
them from oce; but we need hard work and
strong candidates, not just T-shirts and march-
es, to deliver that shove.

the right to decide it will never be brought
to the oor. So her vote for the speaker
means the bill will never see the light of
day. Her vote for Ryan also allows the
far-rights agenda to determine the dis-
cussion on every issue. So while she tries
every-so-often to pretend to be moder-
ate her vote for Ryan allowed Trump and
his minions to prevail. If we continue to
be fooled and reelect the likes of Hogan
and Comstock we shouldnt be surprised
at what we get.
The time has come for Democrats and
Democratic-leaning independents to vote
in every election and to vote for the can-
didate with the real chance to beat Re-
publicans. That may not be your perfect
candidate but it will allow a Democratic
governor in Maryland and a Democratic
Speaker of the House to set the agenda.
It would stop the far right and Trump in
their tracks.
Only you can elect a Democratic gover-
nor of Maryland who would sign the bill
giving 700,000 Marylanders the right to
earn sick leave and a Virginia Democratic
congressperson who would vote for the
next Democratic Speaker of the House.

to see the same people?

seemingly unending line for Aqua; oh
Memorial Day in Rehoboth, you never
disappoint. Gays describe Rehoboth in
various ways. And if youve never been, I
tell people to imagine, say, Provincetown,
Mass., with tay, an Arbys and way more
straight people.

encounters for gays at the beach. For in-
stance, a few years back a truck load drove
past us as we were walking to a party and
threw a beer can at my friend Brians head,
screaming get a job, Elton John! I still to
this day have no idea what that meant.
Friday my little gay darts team, Game of
Throws, and I checked into our charming
cottage on Sussex Street. For me, gone are
the days of 14-person houses. I require a
bed these days, and I happily got one when
another gay couple couldnt make it last
minute because their dog had a seizure.
Plus, Sussex Street puts me Royal Farm
fried chicken adjacent, as well as closer to
Starbucks. For this early riser, a new tra-
dition is sipping coee early on Saturday
morning, watching as gays le down the
street on their way home from the night be-
fore. Their eyes say a combination of OK,
which way is the ocean and no, this is my
brunch outt, what are you talking about?
The next morning we headed to Poodle
Beach, the gay section of the beach that
begins at the end of the boardwalk. Where
it got the name Poodle Beach, no one re-
ally knows. Why we all ock there is prob-
ably a combination of self-segregation and
self-determination. Ive been told that since
it is just outside of the town limits, certain
things like public drinking go from out-
lawed to technically legal. All in all, Satur-
day on the sand featured more boys, Spee-
dos, and questionable decisions. Though it
was certainly a lot calmer than a couple of
years back, when some gays were equating
peeing in public to a civil rights issue.
Sunday on the beach featured Re-
hoboths newest tradition, Wig Day at
the Beach, which is getting higher and
more elaborate. My friend Tyler had an
updo commemorating the sinking of the

Titanic. But there was of course mean-
ing behind that weave; Tyler mentioned
the inspiration was the the shipwreck
that our country has become. Leave it
to gays, sometimes our politics are held
together with bobby pins and sweat-re-
sistant spirit gum. Last year the weather
proved too hot for wigs on the sand. Most
were discarded by the end of the after-
noon, making the beach look like a hur-
ricane had just hit some sort of southern-
women-in-real-estate convention. This
year, the weather cooperated for most
of the afternoon. But the clouds rolled in
and rain began to fall by late afternoon,
making most of the gays scramble as if
they were suddenly made of sugar.
Sunday, on the ride home, as we waited
our turn to get across the Bay Bridge, I won-
dered why I still venture out to the shores
of Delaware every Memorial Day to kick o
summer. Many of my friends have started
to venture down to Pensacola, Fla., a place
favored by gays south of the Mason Dixon.
So why do D.C. gays sit in trac to go to
the same bars just to see the same people?
I guess because its ours. And many of us
wouldnt have it any other way.

The summer 2017 movie season
leaps into action this Friday (June 2) with
the long-awaited release of Wonder
Woman. Israeli actress Gal Gadot plays
the Amazon princess in her rst solo
cinematic outing.
Patty Jenkins (Monster) directs; shes
the rst female director to helm a live-
action movie with a budget of more than
$100 million and the rst woman to direct
a major superhero movie. Chris Pine plays
American Steve Trevor who draws Diana
into the trenches of World War I where
she discovers her own true powers.
Some of the other major studio
releases this summer include The
Mummy, (June 9) with Tom Cruise and
Russell Crowe; Transformers: the
Last Knight (June 9); Spider-Man:
Homecoming (July 7) starring Tom
Holland who recently wowed audiences
with his spectacular drag performance
to Rhiannas Umbrella on Spikes Lip
Sync Battle; and, War for the Planet

Messy familial dysfunction
handled adroitly in Hir

Woolly Mammoth is never afraid to
go there. In the companys unsettling
and exceedingly well-acted production
of Taylor Macs dark comedy Hir, a
hideously dysfunctional family becomes
scarily relatable. That their resentment,
sadness, anger and even ashes of sadistic
cruelty are frequently recognizable makes
for a memorable and often uncomfortable
theatrical experience.
After serving an overseas stint in the
Marine Corps assigned to Mortuary
Aairs Unit, Isaac (Joseph J. Parks) returns
home seeking the familiar but what
he nds is anything but. The formerly
orderly, modest house is a mess. His once
despotic father Arnold (Mitch Hbert) has
suered a stroke and has lost the ability
to hold the family in his abusive grip.
Isaacs mother Paige (Emily Townley),
Arnolds longtime punching bag, is now in
charge and for her that means subverting
the patriarchy. She dresses her disabled

happy to have him home, but she insists
he follow her new protocol. Her rules
are designed to make her husband
miserable: No cooking. No cleaning. No
TV. Keep the air conditioning on high. And
no empathy whatsoever is to be shown
toward Arnold.
While Isaac acknowledges his fathers
failings and history of abusive behavior
in a poignant monologue, he still longs
for order and some sort of patriarchal
structure. So inevitably a battle of wills
ensues. And while Paige revels in her
new-found liberty, she remains mired
in a sick living situation. And shes not
afraid to ght dirty when her way of life
is threatened. Adeptly and fearlessly
led by director by Shana Cooper, the
talented actors superbly convey the
family dynamics and baggage that such a
mother/son struggle entails.
Adding to the familys general
disappointment is their longtime home,
a starter house built atop a landll,
marvelously realized by set designer
Misha Kachman. After living in the house
for decades, the interior is still unnished.
Theres exposed insulation and framing,
and by Paiges design, a colorful mess
of colossal proportion comprised of
assorted junk, toys, piles of laundry, a doll
house made from toilet paper cardboard
tubes and a Christmas tree.
Playwright Taylor Mac, who uses judy
(lowercase) as a gender pronoun, began
writing Hir years ago, yet the work is
particularly timely. The playwright describes
divisive politics and explores whether
people with dierent politics can ever truly
coexist. Are dierent opinions acceptable? Is
it imperative to compromise to heal? After
years of abuse is healing even achievable?
Hir asks these questions and more.

melodic, introspective

Thirty-two years after the release of
Erasures debut album Wonderland, the
veteran British duo is obviously far from
nished. Last year came the ambitious,
career-spanning box set From Moscow
to Mars, and now a new studio album,
the duos 17th, adds to Andy Bell and
Vince Clarkes vast musical legacy.
World Be Gone is another twist in a
sensational career that continues to roll
along with impressive resilience in the
notoriously ckle universe of pop music.
Erasures enduring appeal, even as many
artists who emerged from the 80s have
disappeared or are scraping by on the
nostalgia circuit, is easy to understand as
the duo continues to churn out one great
album after another.
After two ultra-modern and sleek
electro-dance albums (2007s Light at the
End of the World and 2011s Tomorrows
World) notable for big arrangements and
massive walls of sound, the duo veered in
a more retro and stripped-down direction
while remaining largely upbeat on 2014s

though, the album turns inward and
reective. The superb Be Careful What
You Wish For! is a yearning ballad with
an exquisite vocal arrangement, one of
the albums nest moments, and sets the
tone for much of what is to come.
The downbeat vibe continues with the
weary and haunting title track and the
stark break-up ballad The Bitter Parting,
Bells voice taking center stage over
Vince Clarkes spare but lovely electronic
accompaniment. Another powerful
ballad, the albums second single Still
Its Not Over, is yet another example of
the depth of Erasures songcraft. Bells
delivers his vocals with the gravitas and
emotional power the song requires.
Perhaps even more impressive is
Take Me Out of Myself, a wrenchingly
personal track with genuine feeling in
both Bells vocal and Clarkes sublime
retro electronic mastery. Sweet Summer
Loving is a devotional love song with a
lushly beautiful chorus that positively
glows with sincerity.
World Be Gone closes with Just a Little
Love, perhaps the brightest and most
upbeat pop song on the album. Its a smart
move. The duo knows theyve delivered a
collection of songs that appeal to the heart
and the head more than to dancing under
ashing lights or singing along in the car,
but almost as if to prove they can still
deliver a killer pop tune, they unleash Just
a Little Love as the perfect sendo. Its an
obvious choice for a single at some point.
While Erasure generally stays within the
lines of its melodic template of high energy
synth-pop, each album has a distinct vibe
and the duo isnt afraid to allow their
creativity to take them in directions fans
might not expect. This fearlessness and
creativity is the key to their longevity, and
is often overlooked. World Be Gone has
already notched the duo their highest
debut on the UK album chart since 1994s
I Say, I Say, I Say became their fourth
straight chart-topper, which bodes well for
the albums future.

when American pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine)
crashes his plane on the island. The idealistic

British defeat the Germans (the geopolitics
of World War I are greatly simplied). Shes
convinced that she can end the ght by killing
the war god Ares; he tries explaining that its a
little more complicated than that.
The pair head to London (shes not
impressed) and with the help of Steves
secretary Etta Candy (the delightful Lucy
Davis), they turn Princess Diana into Diana
Prince. With the help of Sir Patrick Morgan (an
excellent David Thewlis), Trevor assembles
a rag-tag international band of rogues to get
him and Diana to the front lines. Their target
is the ambitious General Ludendor (Danny
Huston) whose psychotic sidekick Dr. Maru
(Elena Anaya), also known as Dr. Poison, is
developing deadly new chemical weapons.
Diana does nd Ares at the front lines, but
she discovers that Steve is right. Killing the god
of war will not end war.
Jenkins (who helmed the award-winning
2003 movie Monster about lesbian serial
killer Aileen Wuornos) directs the movie with a
condent grace. The ght sequences are well-
paced and clear. Her deployment and slow-
motion eects and CGI are shrewd and never
overwhelm the story. The pacing is assured
and the lm never lags, even during some
long patches of exposition. Jenkins also gets
solid performance from the entire cast.
The movie is greatly strengthened
by Jenkins robust collaboration with
cinematographer Matthew Jensen and
composer Rupert Gregson-Williams. From
the austere splendors of Themyscira to the
busy streets of London to the desolation
of shelled towns and battleelds, the
movie is visually striking. Gregson-Williams
music nicely amplies the mood without
overpowering the action.
The one weak spot is the screenplay by
Allan Heinberg. While the dialogue has a
naturalistic ow, the overall structure of the
plot is weak and unfocused. At 141 minutes,
the script needed some trimming.
The central storyline is Dianas movement
from innocence to awareness. Her initial
naivete about human nature grows into a
more nuanced understanding of the human
capacity for both creation and destruction.
Her ignorance about her heritage is replaced
by her discovery of her full powers and her
true destiny. Jenkins and Gadot explore this
character arc movingly and with amazing
subtlety. In their hands, Dianas journey from
innocent princess to mature warrior makes
compelling cinema.
Unfortunately, this story gets weighted
down with extraneous material, especially
the framing story in modern-day Paris,
the long unfocused prologue on the
island and the superuous and under-
developed love story between Diana
and Steve. The focus on Steve throws
Dianas story o balance, especially in the
climactic moments of the movie.
It would also be great to see some of the
other female characters, especially Hippolyta,
Etta and Dr. Maru more fully developed.
These problems notwithstanding,
Wonder Woman is a must-see for
both fans and interested newcomers,
especially those who want to see a sequel
that explores the fascinating development
of Princess Diana/Diana Prince. We need
more female superhero movies.

Organizers say the time was right for a new LGBT competitive rock climbing group in Washington.
New group eyes
2022 Gay Games

This past April, another new sports
league climbed into the mix of the LGBT
sports community in Washington. Stonewall
Climbing D.C. is utilizing the template set
up by Stonewall Sports which promotes an
active lifestyle, local community engagement
and a safe space for the LGBT and allied
community to play sports.
While there are other social LGBT rock
climbing groups in the area, Stonewall
Climbing is using a competitive team format
and tapping the social networking base of
Kennedy Center Theater
Season Sponsor Stonewall Sports to draw new climbers.
Bryan Yamasaki and Brinda Dass had
already been climbing competitively on
their own and the timing to launch the
league t in perfectly with Team D.C.s bid
for the 2022 Gay Games.
There will be no rock climbing at the
Paris 2018 Gay Games because there was
no go to person in the area, Yamasaki
says. We took it upon ourselves to make
sure that the sport will be represented as
part of the Team D.C. bid.
Rock climbing debuted at the Cologne
2010 Gay Games and was also a part of
the Cleveland 2014 Gay Games where
Yamasaki won two medals.
The new Stonewall Climbing league is
a nine-week handicap program consisting
of six teams with six climbers. They meet

on Tuesdays from 7-10 p.m. at Earth
Treks Crystal City.
They have been adding tweaks to the
format as the season progresses with
the handicap system allowing climbers
to compete on an equal level based on
their grade.
A climbers grade will change as they
progress and new people will have a
higher rate of progression. This will
encourage captains to be looking for new
talent each season, Yamasaki says. With
this handicap system, I am climbing at the
same level as a new climber.
At each session, the top ve highest
scores per person on each team are
compared and then the highest three
ranking members are submitted as the
team score for placement.
This season and next season is utilizing
the bouldering discipline of rock climbing
with several types of surfaces ranging from
10-15 feet high. There are no ropes; safety
mats and padding are used to break falls.
Yamasaki says one of his goals in the
rst season has been to make sure the
climbers are having fun. His interest in
the sport is continually fullled by the
personal challenges that it presents.
What you are climbing is a giant puzzle
that you are trying to solve, he says. If the
route you choose doesnt work out, then you
look for a better path on the next attempt.
Registration for Stonewall Climbings
next season will open in August and the
season will begin the Tuesday following
Labor Day.

From the time we got together, Todd
liked the idea of having kids. I hadnt
given it much thought. Growing up
gay, I didnt think that was possible for
me. I told him I wasnt really interested
but if he wanted to do it, Id be OK with
it.
Time went by. Hed raise the idea
of adoption now and then but we
were busy building our careers and
having fun so we would always agree
it wasnt the right time. That was fine
by me.
Then we hit our 40s and Todd
decided it was now or never. I figured
that if it was really important to him
we should go ahead and we had a son
through surrogacy earlier this year.
I am finding it a rough experience.
We are up at all hours and exhausted
the next day. Im having trouble
staying focused at work, which is a
problem because expenses are crazy
and Todd took off time from his job
(unpaid) to be with our son.
And our son cries much of the
time. Our pediatrician says he will get
through this but it makes everything
worse, both that he is upset and that
we are frequently unable to quiet
him.
Sometimes I feel like this decision
was a mistake. We are over-tired,
short on money, dealing with a crying
baby all the time. Im mad at Todd
for making this decision and mad at
myself for signing up for this without
first considering the consequences.
Our whole life has become stressful
and I dont see it improving.
What is wrong with me? Im
supposed to be overjoyed at having a
son and yet half the time I feel like we
ruined our lives by becoming parents.

MICHAEL REPLIES:
Dont be angry with yourself. Your feelings
are understandable. Raising a child is
tremendously dicult and if people thought
objectively about the pros and cons of having
a baby beforehand, then maybe a lot fewer
people would have kids.
One big problem is that the wonderful
parts seeing your child smile when you pick
him up, watching him develop into a thinking
human, feeling a deep connection to him
may take some time, while the hard parts are
there from the get go.
Yes, you could have put more thought into
this. Your going along with Todd because
you understood how important parenthood
was to him is admirable. But its also true that
we have to balance what is important to our
spouses with an understanding of what we
want for ourselves. Otherwise we can easily
wind up resentful and regretful. I wonder
if this is a pattern between the two of you,
where you accede to his wishes, ignore your
own, then get angry.
But in any case, you agreed to become a
father. The stakes are extremely high here for
your relationship with Todd, your relationship
with your son and for your sons well being.
So if you want to honor your commitment
to Todd and your responsibility to your son,
you need to nd a way to get through this
rough period with less bitterness and more
equanimity.
Have you discussed with Todd how
dicult this is for you or are you suering
in silence? Do you know if Todd is also
struggling? If the two of you would talk
openly about how challenging you are
nding parenting to be and how this
is impacting your relationship, you
wouldnt feel so alone with your feelings

Gay classic Maurice screens at AFI Silver in late June

The beautifully renovated Parkway
Theatre in Baltimores Station North

Reel Armations, D.C.s LGBT lm
festival and monthly series, opens its
summer season with Kiki on June 16.
The movie is a fascinating exploration of
the Kiki scene in New York, an artistic

Series continues with the dramedy
series 195 Lewis on July 14 and
Kings, Queens and In-Betweens, a
documentary focused on gender, on Aug.

AFI Docs, the acclaimed celebration

lmmaker Michael Lumpkin, runs at
various venues around D.C. from June
14-18. Queer highlights include Whitney:

Dancer, an examination of the career of

dancer for the American Ballet Theatre;

Why picking the wrong agent can cost you money

of Realtors so be sure
to nd the right one

Lets face it, Realtors are portrayed
pretty poorly in the media typically as
either a ditzy single mom, a pushy used
car salesman type, or someone totally
aloof in their own world (Im looking at
you, Phil Dunphy). These stereotypes
used to really bother me, because they
didnt reect the hard-working, dedicated
professionals that I typically encounter.
We work with some truly excellent agents
that make me proud to be a Realtor.
In the last few weeks, the spring market
has really started to heat up. Many newly
minted agents are throwing their hat
into the ring to make, what they think, is
a quick buck. As a result, weve encoun-
tered some very interesting situations.
Maybe its just that I am nine months
pregnant and my patience is wearing thin,
but I felt the need to educate the public
on how picking the wrong agent can cost
you. Here is a breakdown of some of the
types of agents and real life encoun-
ters weve had with them that are the
reason for our embarrassing portrayal in
the media. So, please excuse me while I
rant.

THE HARD-WORKING, COMPETENT
AGENT. As I mentioned above, there are
many, many excellent agents out there
who go above and beyond for their cli-
ents and do a truly fabulous job. While
most agents we deal with fall into this cat-
egory, and I could go on and on about all
of the wonderful aspects of those agents,
this post is not about those Realtors.
THE LAZY AGENT. This type of agent is
probably the most common oender in
our profession. They got into real estate
because it oered exibility and they g-
ured they didnt have to work a 9-5 sched-
ule. Turns out, they were right. Real es-
tate is not 9-5, it is 24/7! As agents, we are
available when our clients need us, when
other agents need us, when appraisers
need us, and when home inspectors are
available. We not only must be available
9-5 for the banks and title companies we
work with during the work week, but also
when our clients are available usually
on the weekends and in the evenings.
Agents who thought they were in for
a cushy schedule get a rude awakening.
Most eventually adapt to their new ex-

that cut corners to stay in the industry
and try to make it work, to the detriment
of their clients and anyone trying to do
business with those clients.
