Weacknowledgethatallofuswhohavepowerwithintheinstitutionshareresponsibilityforthe
racistactionsofothers.Furthermore,thoseofuswhoarewhitebearaparticularlylargeshareofthat
responsibility.

Weacknowledgethatwehaveagreatdealofworktodoinordertohonorandliveuptothe
demandsmadebystudentleadersduringlastweeksprotests.

Weacknowledgethatstudentsofcolorandotherswhoareunderrepresentedandunderservedhave
beenvoicingtheirdemandstousforsometime(throughtheStudentsofColorFocusGroupsof
2014,throughtheirparticipationinauthoringtheStrategicEquityPlanfromNovember,inCooper
PointJournalcoverage,forexample)andwehavenotyettrulylistenedandacted.

Weacknowledgestudentsrighttoprotest,andaffirmPresidentBridgesrecentdecisionnottouse
themisguidedlanguageofthecurrentStudentConductCodetopunishtheprotestors.

Wevehementlyrejecttheclaimthatstudentshavebeenviolentsimplybecausetheyhavebeenloud
andemphatic.Thereisadifferencebetweenexercisingtherighttofreelyvoiceanopinionand
incitingviolenceandthatdifferencehasnothingtodowithvolumeorforcefulness.Wesupport
thedemandsmadebystudentsandhonorthepositiveinstitutionalchangetheyhavealready
achievedthroughtheirprotests.

Ourmosturgentdemands(below)centeronthesafetyofthoseindividualswhoarecurrentlymost
atrisk.Atthesametime,weacknowledgethatintheweeksandmonthstocomeourattentionwill
needtoturntothelargerstructuralissuesstudentshaveidentified.

Insolidaritywithstudents,wecommitourselvesto:
*Participatingactivelyandself-criticallyintheannualmandatorytrainingsspecifiedinthe
MemorandumofUnderstandingrecentlysignedbytheUFEandmanagementbargainingteams.
*Holdingeachotheraccountablewhenweactinracistwaysagainstourcolleaguesorourstudents,
accordingtosharedlanguageandunderstandingdevelopedinthetrainings.
*HoldingPresidentBridgesaccountabletothepromiseshemadeattheall-campusforumonMay
26,2017,andtotheprocessofongoingdialoguewithstudentleaders.
*ActivelysupportingtheStrategicPlanputforwardbytheEquityandInclusionCouncil,including
providingsubstantivesupporttotheVicePresident&ViceProvostofEquityandInclusiontasked
withimplementingandextendingtheirwork.

Insolidaritywithstudents,wecallfortheEvergreenadministrationto:
*Centerstudentperspectivesinapersistentmediaapproachtocounterthealt-rightnarrativesthat
aredemonizingEvergreenandDayofAbsencespecifically.
*Takeseriouslythethreatsmadetoindividualcommunitymembersanduseallavailable
institutionalresourcestoprotectthem.
*DemonstrateaccountabilitybypursuingadisciplinaryinvestigationagainstBretWeinstein
accordingtoguidelinesintheSocialContractandFacultyHandbook.Weinsteinhasendangered
faculty,staff,andstudents,makingthemtargetsofwhitesupremacistbacklashbypromulgating
misinformationinpublicemails,onnationaltelevision,innewsoutlets,andonsocialmedia.

Weareangryandfrustratedandconcerned.Wealsobelieve,however,thatiftheCollegecanmuster
ameaningfulcollectiveresponsetorecentevents,thiscanbeapowerfulleverforgrowthinstudent
numbers,success,andequityandforfutureinstitutionalchange.Weurgetheadministrationnotto
leadwithfear,oradesiretosuppressstudentsvoices.Weurgethemtolettheenergyandclarityof
thosevoicescarryusforward.
