Mechanics of Breast Cancer

Summary:
Breast cancer is one of the most common of all cancers in women. This article discusses recent findings
about the understanding of causes and mechanics of breast cancer and its prevention strategies.

Brief Overview of Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a cancer of the breast tissues. It is usually detected as a small mass or lump in the breast
in the beginning. If it is left undiagnosed for some time, it can spread to other parts of the body such as
the lymph nodes. It affects women in general, but men can also get it in rare cases.

Causes of Breast Cancer

Scientists do not know the exact causes of breast cancer completely. There are, however, several risk
factors that may put a person on higher risk relative to others. These risk factors include a personal
history of breast cancer, family history, age of the individual (people above 50 years are at higher risk),
gender (women are at a higher risk), radiation therapy in the past, hormone therapies, and alcohol
drinking.

A recent research found that pepsinogen C (PGC) that belongs to aspartic protease family which is
secreted by gastric cells is linked to cancer development and progression. Another research published in
BMC indicates that penetration of the mammary gland membrane by cancer cells can lead to the
progression of tumor from the mammary glands to nearby tissues. These findings indicate that
peptidylarginine deiminase 2 can play a role in tge transfer and migration of breast cancer cells. Another
research on ductal carcinoma says that inhibition of peptidylarginine deiminase 2 activity can maintain
basement membrane integrity in xenograft tumors. PAD2 depletion or inhibition can suppress migration
of the cancer cells and alter their morphology.

Prevention of Breast Cancer

We cannot completely prevent breast cancer because we do not know the causes fully. But, the recent
findings and the knowledge of causes based on these findings provide us a few steps can be taken for
the benefit of individuals. Pomegranate is considered a nutrient-rich fruit that has been used since
ancient times for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases. There is evidence for it in the
current studies too that are published in reputed journals of nutrition. Studies show an inverse link
between vitamin D and breast density. Breast density is known as a risk factor for breast cancer.
Therefore, tracking the vitamin D levels can provide a good starting point for us as a prevention of
breast cancer. There are studies that indicate that higher levels of 25(OH)D pre-menopause and vitamin
D are associated with lower breast density. Screening for the cancer is an established approach to detect
cancer at an early stage when it is possible to treat it. A regular screening is recommended after every
three years once you reach the age of 40. Keeping your weight under control, taking a healthy diet, and
limiting alcohol drinking are other steps to be considered. To know more about breast cancer, please
