Middle school inspires others with her career choice

Always work hard because hard work will always open doors for you, Kim Anderson,

a middle school math teacher at Plymouth Scholars Charter Academy said. Anderson has worked

hard for the career she is passionate about: teaching. She has had a variety of careers from

serving in the Navy, to working for Ford Motor Company, to now being the strong and

supportive teacher she is today.

After Anderson graduated high school, she went to serve in the Navy. Then, she worked

in Information Technology at Ford Motor Company for eight years but later decided to go back

to school.

I decided to go back to school, and I was going to just work on a degree, probably in

Information Technology, Anderson recalled. But then, I started volunteering in the classroom,

and that's kind of where the spark was lit. That's when I decided I wanted to be a teacher. That

spark has lead Anderson into a career that she has now been happily pursuing for 10 years. In

these 10 years, she has touched the lives of her students in various ways.

She cares about her students. She makes sure we are all pushing our limits even after we

leave the classroom. She always made us think about how it would help us later, Rebekah

Arcilla, a former student who is now a freshman at Canton High School, remembered.

Anderson has taught her students the value of planning ahead, but growing up, Anderson

did not have the same kind of guidance. Her willingness to teach this quality came from a

childhood memory.

When I was younger, I didnt really have a teacher that taught me forward thinking.

Where would I be in five years? 10 years?Anderson said with a look that was grim but still full

of light. She went on to say that not having teacher's guide her at a young age was a reason she

did not pursue teaching earlier on in life. That experience also impacted how she connected and

interacted with her students.

Shes honest with the kids, and I think thats a good trait to have, really, Anderson's

colleague, Heather Lechner, said when asked what makes Anderson a good teacher.

Andersons honesty along with her hard work lead her to win the 2016 Excellence in

Teaching Award from National Heritage Academies. She credited her success to not only her

own hard work but also others who have helped her throughout her journey. I attribute much of

my success to the hard work of my students and teammates.Anderson said.
