I. Content and Standards: 8.1.W.A. Evaluate patterns of continuity and change over
time, applying context of events.
8.1.W.B. Evaluate the interpretation of historical events and sources, considering the
use of fact versus opinion, multiple perspectives, and cause and effect relationships.
II. Prerequisites: Students should have finished film. Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee
III. Essential Questions: What is the American Dream? Is it possible for the American
Dream to change over time?
IV. Instructional Objective: Students will be able to understand the religious and
economic motivation for Manifest Destiny. The students will use analytical skills to
identify similarities between expression of American Dream In American Progress
and Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.
V. Instructional Procedures:
Part 1: Have students finish film: Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee (30 min)
Part 1: Initial discussion asking: What is the American Dream (3-5 min)
Part 3: Present visual of American Progress painting with a Link provided in Google
Classroom. Give students 1-2 minutes to analyze painting. Have discussion on what
they notice. What from this painting is seen in the film? Focus on visual of Columbia
in painting and tie in Columbus/religious motivation. Is history repeating itself? (5-8
min)
Part 4: Present homework: Draw your own idea of the American Dream. Pic Collage
App, Notability App, pen and paper, etc are acceptable. Hand in to Google Classroom
(Less than 5 minutes)
VI. Materials and Equipment: Students I-Pad will be used to view painting American
Progress and use apps for HW
VII. Assessment/Evaluation: Review students paintings.
IX. Technology: I-Pad with notability (or similar note-taking app) and Google Classroom
