Activity:
Obtain a copy of Statistics for People Who Think They Hate Statistics by Salkind, N.J. (2014),
5th ed. Sage. ISBN: 978-1-4522-7771-4. It is available through interlibrary loan or you may
purchase a used copy from a variety of sources. If, after reading these entire instructions, you
have questions, do not hesitate to talk to the current directed reading advisor.

Part I
Read Chapters 2, 3, 5, 9, 11, and 15 and write summaries of their contents. You may need to
read other chapters to maximize comprehension, but summaries are only required for these six.

Part II
Using a demonstration dataset that will be provided to you, conduct descriptive and inferential
analyses and summarize the results in a written document. Specific instructions about analyses
to be conducted will be given when the demonstration dataset is assigned.

Part III
Find three articles of your choosing that include at least some inferential analyses. Critique the
methods chosen. Although your focus will be on the results section of the paper, it may be
necessary to describe the methodology and subject area in some detail to make your critique
clear. The critique should include a discussion of the appropriateness of the methods chosen and
also any contraindications for the methods chosen. Discuss the assumptions the authors make in
order to justify using their analyses (they may or may not explicitly state them) and conclude
whether those assumptions are justified.
