Competitive machines were operated at their maximum power

level. However, the power boost button on Hitachi EX200-5 was
not used because it would not be practical to actuate the temporary
power boost feature during every loading cycle.

90 Degree Truck Loading Test Description
Conditions allowed for a fair comparison of all machines tested.
Truck loading productivity was measured with the truck positioned
next to the excavator, requiring a 90-degree swing. Digging depth
was approximately 2.2 m (7'3"), and a 10 metric ton (22,000 lb)
size dump truck was used.

The material was compacted clay. Material density was measured

at 1800 kg/m3 (3000 lb/yd3). Individual cycle times were recorded
during the tests.

Truck payloads were measured on an electronic scale. The empty

truck was weighed prior to the test and again after loading to
determine the truck payload. Five bucket payloads were loaded
into each truck. During the tests, individual cycle times were
recorded with a stopwatch and a fuel flow meter measured fuel
consumption on each machine.

Trenching
Trenching tests were conducted by digging a single bucket wide
trench 2.5 m (8'2") deep and approximately 20 m (65'7") long.
Trenching cycle time, fuel consumption and trenching depth were
carefully measured for each excavator.

The material was compacted clay. Material density was measured

at 1800 kg/m3 (3000 lb/yd3). Individual cycle times were recorded
during the tests.

The bucket width (including side cutter) for each excavator is

shown in the table below.

Cycle Time
The Cat 320C was the fastest among competitors and the 320B.
Major differences were recorded on digging cycle time, swing
and boom-up which both operations are simultaneous operation
with load.
Compared to the Cat 320B, the Cat 320C was 10% faster.
Most of time savings were earned by swing and boom-up,
return operation.

Production
The Cat 320C outproduced competitors and the Cat 320B by
more than 10%.

Fuel Consumption and Fuel Efficiency

Although Cat 320C fuel consumption was relatively high
among the competitors, the Cat 320C achieved the highest fuel
efficiency due to higher productivity results.
The Kobelco SK200-6 fuel efficiency was 2% over the Cat 320C.
However, the production difference was 18% in favor of the
Cat 320C.

Cycle Time
The Cat 320C was the fastest among competitors and the 320B.
The major differences were recorded during the digging cycle
time, swing and boom-up simultaneous operation with load.
Compared with the Cat 320B, the Cat 320C was 10% faster.
Most of time savings was earned by swing and boom-up, return
operation.

Production
The Cat 320C outproduced competitors and the Cat 320B by
more than 10%.

Fuel Consumption and Fuel Efficiency

Similar to truck loading, the Cat 320C fuel consumption was
relatively high among the competitors. However, the Cat 320C
has better fuel efficiency than others with exception of Hitachi
EX200-5 which is 0.2% better than the Cat 320C. This difference
is considered as equivalent machine performance between the
two. The Cat 320C still holds a dominant position in productivity
over Hitachi EX200-5 and others.

7
Operator Comments Cat 320C
The balance of power and speed is extremely great.
There is less slowing down of speed when under a load which
leads to a strong, powerful feeling and perception.
There may be a competitor with a faster single actuator speed,
but in the actual digging which requires simultaneous operation,
the Cat 320C is the fastest.
Feel quickness in actual digging.
The balance of swing and boom-up is excellent in 90 degree
truck loading test.
Boom-down speed is also fast, and controllability is excellent
when digging.

Komatsu PC200-6
The machine speed of the PC200-6E is slow unless it is in
active mode.
During digging, the PC200-6E tends to slow down
In the return operation, the PC200-6E is very hard to control
due to mismatched speed of boom-down and swing.
Digging power seems to be weaker than the 320C, especially
the speed is slower than the 320C.

Hitachi EX200-5
Fine control controllability and the balance of power and speed
is good. However, the speed is slower than the Cat 320C,
especially in the simultaneous operation.
Power is ordinary rank.

Kobelco SK200-6
In M mode, cylinder speed is fast under no load condition.
But once the load is applied, the speed slows down rapidly.
The stick digging force does not feel strong enough. The Cat 320C
is superior when digging hard bank soil.
Auto mode is even slower than M mode.
When swinging with boom up, the swing speed is slow and once
the boom up lever is returned to ease the speed, the swing speed
jumps up.

8
The Cat 320C performed very well during this test. The key to Cat 320C Production
describing the superiority of the Cat 320C is: Test Summary
Excellent balance of power and speed.
Fast Cycle Time.
Excellent simultaneous movement.
