GUIDELINES TO PREPARING RESEARCH PROPOSALS

This guideline is intended for candidates applying to pursue their postgraduate degrees by research. Candidates are
required to submit a 2000-word research proposal, which should comprise the following elements:

Background or a brief literature review on the research topic

Ø Describe the current state of the art. Why is the research needed? Outline previous work in this field. How will the
results fill this need and how will the results be beneficial? To what extent does this research build upon or add to
existing research.

Objective of study

Ø Describe the objectives that influence the research. May be stated as questions which the research seeks to answer
or as hypotheses to be tested.

Scope of study

Ø Be specific in what you want to conduct research on, and try to draw a boundary around the area of study that you
think you can finish within the time allowed.

Methodology

Ø Describe the design or procedural plan to be followed or methods to be used in the study such as library research,
lab work, field work, historical documentary, interview, survey, evaluation and analysis, pitfalls that may be
encountered and limitations to proposed procedures.

Work schedule

Ø Please provide a detailed Gantt chart, stating the expected commencement date of research, and the expected date
of the submission of the final thesis.
Ø When preparing a framework for the research, please include time estimates for the completion of its various phases
bearing in mind the maximum periods of candidacy

UTP FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

UTP offers limited financial assistance to deserving candidates who wish to pursue MSc and PhD by research. The two
types of financial assistance are:

1. GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP SCHEME

Eligibility Requirements
q For Masters of Science, candidates must posses a good Honours Degree or equivalent in the relevant field from
a recognized university. For Doctor of Philosophy, candidates must possess a Masters Degree or equivalent in
the relevant field from a recognized university
q Research proposal approved by UTP Postgraduate Committee

Period and Term of Assistantship


q The period for assistantship will be decided by the Postgraduate Committee based on the actual period of
study. Extension of the assistantship will be based on performance.

Registration
q The offer is subject to the acceptance of the registration for the programme.

Value of Assistantship
q Subsistence Allowance will be given: RM1320 for MSc students and RM1650 for PhD students.
q All fees will be covered by the Scheme. Registration fees and hostel fees will be born by the student.

Responsibilities
q All candidates are required to undertake 13 hours of academic activities per week in the form of tutorials or
laboratory demonstration or any other related academic activities.

Termination
q The University reserves the right to terminate the assistantship without notice.

2. RESEARCH OFFICER POSTGRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP SCHEME

Eligibility Requirements
q For Masters of Science, candidates must posses a good Honours Degree or equivalent in the relevant field from
a recognized university. For Doctor of Philosophy, candidates must possess a Masters Degree or equivalent in
the relevant field from a recognized university
q Research proposal approved by UTP Postgraduate Committee
q Must be appointed as a Research Officer by the Research Enterprise Office of UTP

Period and Term of Scholarship


q The period for the assistantship will be decided by the Postgraduate Committee based on the actual period of
study. Extension of the assistantship will be based on performance.

Registration
q The offer is subject to the acceptance of the registration for the programme.

Value of Scholarship
q No subsistence allowance will be given.
q Only tuition fees will be covered by the Scheme. Registration, hostel and examination fees will be borne by the
student

Responsibilities
q All candidates are required to undertake 6 hours of academic activities per week in the form of tutorials or
laboratory demonstration or any other related academic activities.
