Gubernatorial Candidate, John Chiang nearly tied for second place with strong
favorability and room to grow

Los Angeles A poll of 602 likely June 2018 voters conducted for the John Chiang for Governor campaign by
Goodwin Simon Strategic Research (GSSR) shows a tight race for the two positions in the runoff between
Democrats John Chiang and Antonio Villaraigosa and Republican John Cox. The poll (conducted 5/30 to 6/5/17)
shows:

Gavin Newsom Democrat 26%

Antonio Villaraigosa Democrat 12%
John Cox Republican 11%
John Chiang Democrat 10%

A memo from pollster Paul Goodwin is attached.

Significantly, while John Chiang is not quite as well known as the other two Democrats, his favorable rating is
significantly more positive.

Newsom was 42% favorable and 27% unfavorable (a plus 15% favorable)
Villaraigosa was 33% favorable and 25% unfavorable (plus 8% favorable)
Chiang was 30% favorable and only 7% unfavorable (plus 23% favorable).

John Chiang is already quite competitive, stated Chiangs consultant Parke Skelton. Despite being somewhat
less well known, he is virtually tied with Villaraigosa. And with virtually no negative, John Chiang has a lot of
room to grow.

This poll phoned from the voter file using vote history data to determine who was a likely voter. A recent IGS
poll had somewhat different results because they used a method called random digit dialing where respondents
were asked if they were registered and if so were they likely to vote. A previous IGS poll in March also used the
voter file method and returned numbers quite similar to this poll by GSSR (Newsom 26, Villaraigosa 11, Chiang
8). For a copy of the polling memo, please reach out to Kate Chapek.
