JULATON BSED ENGLISH II THE TEACHING PROFESSION

STAND AND DELIVER

A MOVIE REFLECTION

With an 80s vibe and challenging portrayal of the characters. The movie Stand and
Deliver gives us a preview on how a teacher must motivate ones student in order to for them
to succeed. It was based on a true story of Jaime Escalante as the Bolivian teacher who spend
his life teaching intellectually challenged students in Garfield High School.

Mathematics is one of the subjects that we used to struggle for and it seems that this
struggle is existing in Garfield High School. Mr Escalante take this as an opportunity to teach the
students basic arithmetic, as time goes by he was able to unfold the hidden potentials of his
students and then he encourage the administration to teach calculus among his students but the
head of the Mathematics Department disagrees with Mr Escalantes beliefs. They took advantage
of the summer time in which they choose to hold their classes on an unconditioned room. It
seems that Mr Escalante is dedicated enough to reshape the future of those students and it is the
most admirable quality of Mr Escalante. A teacher must have the passion and will to guide their
student along the dreams that they would like to take. We must be optimistic no matter what
happened on us.

The aptitude test is the much awaited part of the movie as they prepared since summer
season. They are expecting to reach a 100% passing rate. Everybody got passed and their heart
were filled with joy. Mr Escalante was given a plaque of excellence for his efforts but their hard
work turns out to be a misfortunate. Discrimination arouse on that time, degrading students skills
in terms of calculus .So they retake it, and it was harder, but again they prove themselves on
how persevere they are to pass. The movie encourages the students be not anxious towards
learning mathematics. The power of motivation is essential and we must take this as serious
matter. In my own outlook, Mr Escalante is an example of what a math teachers in the 21st
century should be really are. With the demands of society one must be well educated and well
rounded to various fields in order for him/her to survive.

Overall, this movie is exemplary in terms of moral lesson that it conveys. I wish that math
teacher nowadays will able to possess Mr Escalantes unrelenting passion towards teaching. He
acted as their father of each student. A teacher like him deserves a recognition but as a future
teacher it doesnt stop there we must defy ourselves on the challenges along on our professional
paths.
