he areas premier swim, bike and
run competition, the Charleston
Sprint Triathlon Series, kicked off
its 27th year on May 21 at James Island
County Park. Race 2 of the series is set for
Sunday, June 18, and registration for all
remaining races is now open.
The Charleston Sprint Triathlon
is a five-race series that spans May
through August and is hosted by the
Charleston County Park and Recreation
Commission. Athletes may sign up for one
race, or compete in multiple or all of the
five-race series. Registration is now open

annual Sea Island Habitat for Humanity Golf Benefit at
the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort. The event
was a huge success with over 90 participants and contributions

to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide open water and riding a bicycle on roads

Gregg followed up on last months
motion to renew the towns stand-by
contract for debris removal with Phillips
and Jordan. Seabrook originally signed
a three year as needed contract
with Phillips and Jordan in 2013,
which included two optional one-year
extensions. SITC voted to continue the
contract, but Gregg since discovered
SITC needs a Department of Health and
Environmental Control permit to operate
a debris site. Because SITC leases the site
and hasnt had occasion to use it, there
hasnt been an issue. However, Gregg
is moving ahead with the permitting
process; the entire ready if you need
it plan could unravel without permits
already in place.
The disaster recovery council will
hold its next exercises June 6 and 7,
said Gregg. The dates were selected to
dovetail the hurricane exercises being
conducted by the county on June 7, built
around pre-landfall preparations. He
then reported the Federal Emergency
Management Agency had approved two
of three obligations to reimburse to
Seabrook from the last hurricane. The
estimated payment, somewhere north of
$63,000, will be routed through the State
before it reaches Seabrook. It represents
a 75 percent rate of reimbursement to
the town, but does not include another
$6,000 (the third obligation) filed in
conjunction with damages to the utility,
he said. Those comments left only Disaster
Awareness Day to mention.
Free Lunch!, said Gregg, is just one
part of what makes DAD on Seabrook

the event for the third consecutive year on
June 15 at the Seabrook Island Club from
10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There are special

prepare for hurricane season, delivered by
the professionals tasked with developing
those plans in the first place.
Councilmember John Turner had
a lengthy report after last months
environmental committee meeting. Front
and center, again, was the topic of offshore
drilling. Washington has reanimated
the zombie of drilling off the coast of
Seabrook. We considered not taking a
separate action so close to our (last official
objection filed in 2015), but this new
proposal is even worse than the previous
proposal and the committee decided to ask
the town for another official objection,
said Turner.
No Drill South Carolina is a group
originally formed in 2015 to contest
the idea of offshore drilling. Its unified
push called on each and every coastal
municipality to write letters to state
officials condemning the practice. Former
Seabrook Mayor Terry Ahearn famously
voted contrary to his personal feelings
and led the charge against offshore
drilling then. This time (2017) Seabrook
would be among the first coastal towns to
join a growing list. Mayor Ron Ciancio
would lead a unanimous vote to object to
offshore drilling, and verbally listed those
officials who would be receiving SITCs
written objections.
Turner is still worried about the
patchwork nature of the radios being used
for emergency responses on the island.
He wants consistent equipment capable
of seamlessly communicating with the
town, beach patrol, sheriffs office and
county officials. Turner is now asking
the Property Owners Association and
Community Emergency Response Team
for assistance with the radios. He also
needs CERT and POA volunteers to
join the countys Emergency Operations
Center in North Charleston, so Seabrook
has a liaison within this vital emergency
response organization.

Councilmember John Wells gave an
update on the Accommodations Tax
Committee. Requests for 2018 have begun,
and include the usual suspects; Kick it
at Bohicket, The Billfish Tournament
and The Alan Fleming Senior Tennis
Tournament. Wells also mentioned the
towns advertising company has agreed to
assist with making ATAX forms available
to a broader audience, and has also agreed
to help manage forms completed through
the channels they open up.
Councilmember Skip Crane reported a
change in leadership at the POA. Effective
with last months board meeting, Ed Jones
has stepped down as board chair and Bill
Huff has stepped up. Councilmember
Turner chimed in to say he would have
continued to support Jones as chair saying
he Felt the whole thing was poorly done,
but didnt elaborate.
The mayors report made a brief mention
of the Federal Emergency Management
Agency. FEMA representatives would
be visiting Seabrook in the coming week
to review updates to its flood maps with
residents. He then turned to discuss the
Adams Family House. Little has been
said publicly about 1126 Ocean Forrest
Lane for nearly a year, but it seems clear
SITCs patience with the system has run
out and it wants to demolish the blight.
The partial construction on the
property was left open to the elements
and has languished for over a decade.
Government agencies galore, multiple
lenders, multiple builders, and multiple
contractors have been involved in the
civic
case, all with varying degrees of financial
interests in its disposition. Hoping to
mitigate the prospect of being sued over
its decision, SITC had attorney Stephen
Brown present at the council meeting.
Brown presided over a very deliberate
and public review of the case with Carl
Simmons, a 45-year veteran of Charleston
Countys building services department.
Brown asked Simmons a battery of
questions about the property, those and
the answers are summarized below:
1. Is there any action which could
be taken to save the property?

St. Johns Fire District
receives new truck

T
he St. Johns Fire District is proud
to introduce a new addition to its
fleet with the arrival of a custom-
built tower ladder truck. This 47-foot
long tower ladder was built by Pierce
Manufacturing and features a 95-foot
tower platform, seating for 6 firefighters,
2,000 gallon-per-minute water pump,
155 feet of ground ladders and an array of
equipment and tools. This new apparatus
will be housed at Station Four, located at
12 Sora Rail Road on Kiawah Island, and
have the call sign of Tower 701.
The addition of this tower ladder
continues the Districts commitment to
upgrading our fleet with state of the art
apparatus, said Fire Chief Colleen Walz.
The increased firefighting capacity,
improved safety features, and equipment
upgrades are providing our firefighting
force with the best tools to protect our
communities.
The St. Johns Fire District will conduct
extensive training with the tower before
the unit is placed into service. Personnel
from the trucks manufacturer are working
with District personnel on familiarization
of the apparatus this week. The tower will
be placed in service this summer upon
successful training of all crew members.
Other features of Tower 701 include
a 600 horsepower engine, hydraulic
generator, positive pressure fans, rope
rescue gear, thermal imaging camera, and
a full complement of firefighter tools and
equipment.
A specific service date and a ceremony
to welcome the apparatus to the fleet will
be announced at a later date.

top three age group winners in five-year
increments, and the top male and female
finishers over the age of 40 (Masters
division). Awards will additionally be
presented to the top three competitors
who register for the Clydesdale (men over
200 pounds), Athena (women over 150
pounds) or Masters Clydesdales divisions.
The Championship race will also award
participants who have earned the most
points throughout the five-race series.
New this year, 5 Race Club medals will
be distributed to anyone who competes in
all five races.
Coed Tri Club team competition will
be available during Race 4 on July 30.
A discounted rate is available for
athletes who register for more than one
race. Move IT! Pass holders also receive
a discount admission rate. A Sprint
Triathlon Tune-Up program is currently
taking place for athletes wanting training
assistance.

ave Holt says hes not from a musical
family, except for the part about the
rhythm bones. Each generation
[Holt side] had to learn to play the rhythm
bones that had been passed down from my
great, great grandfather from one generation
to the next, for 125 years. Playing this folk
instrument as a child opened my ears to [the]

unusual and exciting sounds of traditional
music, the four-time Grammy winner told
The Island Connection in an email.
Holt was born in Gatesville, Texas and
attended the University of California, Santa
Barbara. He earned several degrees which
included facets of biology and education. There
was also a suspicious focus on art for someone
who says they arent from a musical family.
Music may have been relegated to hobby status
in those days but turned into quest in 1969.
I came to the Blue Ridge Mountains
in search of old-time banjo players. I found
a world of music there and have spent my
life learning the instruments, collecting
and performing the songs of the region. My
mentors were folks born in the late 1800s and
closer to our pioneer ancestors than to the
modern world. I like to say they came of age
before self-doubt was invented. They were very
grounded and wonderful musicians: folks like
Doc Watson, Roy Acuff, Grandpa Jones and
Ralph Stanley, says Holt.
Holt has amassed a collection of well over
100 songs. Many are solo efforts, while others
are collaborative performances with an array of
artists. His most popular song on iTunes, for
example, is Dixie.
Holts genius isnt so much the inventive
process as it is the delivery. Some of his most
popular works are stories set to music where
timing and tenor make or break the show. The
bards tendency to do it just right makes
Holt a favorite with families. Audiences sit
spellbound by a ghost story, cringing at the
staccato down stroke across banjo strings. The
family friendly Festival of Mountain Music
scheduled for July 2 from 3-5 p.m. at Kiawahs
Freshfields Village is the perfect venue for
Holts art and the raft of artists hes bringing
with him; The Jeff Little Trio, Amythyst Kiah,
Josh Goforth, and of course, David Holt and

the Lightning Bolts.
Mountain music is a combination of
Anglo American and African American
musical ideas. [Thats] what gives it [its]
rhythmic drive and soulful delivery. Amythyst
Kiah is an astounding young talent with a
powerful voice somewhere between Odetta
and Big Mama Thornton. She is also a fine
banjo and guitar player.
The Jeff Little Trio features Jeff on piano
and reigning National Guitar Champion,
Steve Lewis on guitar. In putting together the
"Festival of Mountain Music" I tried to choose
acts that show the variety of mountain music.
In 2000 I was asked to bring a band to
the largest country music festival in Europe.
I chose the members of the Lightning Bolts
because each is a great musician grounded [in]
the songs and styles [from] around Asheville,
NC, where we all live. The band has been
together seventeen years. We have played two
standing room only concerts in Kiawah in the
past and are looking forward to playing there
July 2. This is a festival for the whole family.
There will be lots of musical variety and
phenomenal musicianship, concluded Holt.

Joys of Boating
DOCKING IN A STRONG CURRENT

L
ets face it, docking in the Charleston
area can create a lot of anxiety and
has caused more than a few marital
spats. Below are a few rules to make
docking easier.
1. Test your transmission BEFORE
approaching.
2. Have a plan.
3. Have a bailout maneuver.
4. Always approach from down
current and operate into the
current.
5. Never approach the dock any faster
than you are willing to hit it.
Five simple rules. Lets dig into each
one a little deeper.
Rule 1- No matter your propulsion
system, its quick and easy to test for proper
shifting before you put the boat in a spot
that it MUST work. Take 30 seconds, stop
and try reverse and then back to forward
before you get inside a fairway and discover
a problem. If you run boats long enough,
one day youll thank me.
Rule 2- If you dont have a suitable
docking plan, one thats not dangerous, one
that doesnt require super human tricks of
your crew and one that you, the Captain,
are comfortable with, DONT dock your
boat there. Wait on different weather, go
to an easier dock or even practice your
intended maneuver in open water. Once
you have a suitable plan, explain it to your
crew and make sure they understand what
you want them to do. Backing into the
current? Perhaps the simple instruction of,
please make fast the stern line first. Have
a dockhand helping you? They dont always
know whats best and may be standing
there holding a bow line when its the last
line you actually need to attach. Heres
where your plan and the discussion with
the crew comes into play. The crew should
instruct the dockhand to ignore the bow
line and request they hand up a spring or
stern line first.
Rule 3- There are some docking situations
that would cause you to put the boat in a
position that you cannot recover from if you
fail to maneuver properly. If you dont have
a suitable way to bail out and start over, you
should seriously consider the risk you are
putting your vessel and crew under, and the

Forecasters predict
above normal
hurricane season

F
orecasters at NOAAs Climate
Prediction Center say the Atlantic
could see another above-normal
hurricane season this year.
For the upcoming Atlantic hurricane
season, which runs from June 1 through
November 30, forecasters predict a 45
percent chance of an above-normal season,
a 35 percent chance of a near-normal
season, and only a 20 percent chance of a
below-normal season.
"As a Florida resident, I am particularly
proud of the important work NOAA does
in weather forecasting and hurricane
prediction," said U.S. Secretary of
Commerce Wilbur Ross. "These forecasts
are important for both public safety
and business planning, and are a crucial
function of the federal government."
Forecasters predict a 70 percent
likelihood of 11 to 17 named storms
(winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 5
to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of
74 mph or higher), including 2 to 4 major
hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of
111 mph or higher). An average season
produces 12 named storms of which six
become hurricanes, including three major
hurricanes.

Cynthia Cronk

C
ynthia Cronk is a Johns Island
resident and a human resources
volunteer at Barrier Island Free
Medical Clinic, now in her third year of
service.
Cronk retired to Charleston and was
seeking meaningful volunteer work. Her
background in human resources had
already exposed her to the healthcare
business, having previously volunteered
at the Santa Barbara Emergency Room
every Saturday night for nearly six years.
The ER was exciting and Cronks work
there was fulfilling; by managing the
waiting room hysterics and stocking carts
it freed the nurses and techs to do their
skilled work. When the position at
BIFMC presented itself, Cronk jumped
at the opportunity. For me, it has been
fun to do HR in a small organization - a
contrast from my previous position, but a
good one, she remarked.
Cronks interest in pursuing volunteer
work was to do something that was
useful for the organization and for the
clients served by that organization. For
me, BIFMC provides that. I am able to
provide some benefit to the organization
and in return I am part of something very
special, she stated. I see the staff and
cadre of medical and support volunteers
offer their services in professional and
compassionate ways to patients and
their families. Every person who comes
to the clinic is treated with respect and
is afforded medical treatment with full
dignity. Its inspiring to be part of the
volunteer mix at BIFMC.
The BIFMC deals primarily with
uninsured patients that live and work on
James, Johns and Wadamalaw Islands.
Uninsured does not necessarily connote
unemployed, which is a common
assumption. Cronk recalls a conversation
with a patient that brought this
misconception to light. I was checking
out at a local grocery store a few weeks
ago and had an engaging cashier. In the
course of our conversation, she mentioned
she was soon to get off the grocery store
shift but then she had to go to her second
job. I inquired ...so you have 2 jobs? She
smiled and replied, ...actually I have 3
jobs - you know, to make ends meet.
In addition to those who have multiple

part-time positions that may not offer
benefits, there is another group of patients
whose circumstances change and leave
them without benefits and sometimes
employment. There are no true
stereotypes when it comes to people who
need health care but lack sufficient income
and insurance, explains Cronk. BIFMC
evaluates every patients circumstances in
an effort to be able to offer compassionate
health care that every person deserves.
For those interested in getting
involved with the BIFMC, there are
options for volunteers at the clinic.
Medical volunteers, doctors and nurses,
are always needed. If your interest is in
a support capacity, the clinic needs front
office administrative help and Spanish
language interpreters. But they also need
help with fundraising, business services,
community outreach and so much more.
So, if youre considering BIFMC as a place
to volunteer, get in touch with key staff
at the clinic who can describe the work,
the skills needed and the opportunities
available.

Shrimp salad with
deviled eggs

ith summer here in the
Carolinas we are lucky enough
to have local shrimp. As you
walk along the beach the shrimp boats
become more abundant. This year is
starting out to be a very good shrimp year.
I got some beauties at Magwood Seafood
at the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market.
It's also getting warm outside so a cold
salad is a perfect meal.
Shrimp Salad with Deviled Eggs
Serves 4
1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 Tbsp seafood seasoning
2 tsp white wine or tequilla lime vinegar
2 tsp soy sauce
2 tsp brown sugar
2 tsp Dijon mustard, divided use
Pinch of cayenne
Dried onion seasoning (we have some at
our store called onion obsession)
2 to 3 Tbsp canola or grapeseed oil
4 persian cucumbers or 1 larger cucumber
Sriacha, to taste
A handful of mixed baby greens
1. Fill a medium pot full with
water, bring to a boil. Add seafood
seasoning and shrimp. Boil until
shrimp is cooked through about
3 minutes. Remove from pot
immediately and spread shrimp on
a sheet pan to cool.
2. If you save the shells you can add to
the pot with water and seasoning
and gently boil for about an hour
for a good shrimp stock and save
for another use.

brown sugar, mustard, cayenne
and onion seasoning. Whisk
vigorously and add the oil slowly.
4. Slice the cucumbers in and
then slice into pieces. Add the
cucumbers to the dressing with
sriracha if desired and toss in
cooled shrimp. Refrigerate until
ready to serve atop baby greens
with deviled eggs.
Deviled Eggs
Serves 4
4 large eggs
2 Tbsp mayonnaise
1 Tbsp freshly chipped chives
1 tsp Dijon mustard
Salt, to taste
dash of sriracha
1. In a small saucepan cover the eggs
completely with water. Bring
water to a boil and remove from
heat and cover pot. Let sit for 10
minutes.
2. Remove eggs from water and cool
completely in an ice bath.
3. Carefully peel eggs and rinse.
4. Combine remaining ingredients
in a small bowl. Slice eggs in half
and add the yolks to the bowl.
Mash completely with a fork until
mixture is smooth. Spoon yolk
mixture into the egg whites. Cover
with plastic wrap and refrigerate
until ready to serve.
5. Garnish with additional chopped
chives and sriracha.
