GUM
TEACHER TIPS

Use the story to create money calculations for your students, such as: James has five
quarters, and Danny has four. How much money do they have all together? If the
machine offers six gumballs for a quarter, how many gumballs could the boys get if
they used all their coins?

Ask your students to draw all the items that shoot out of the gumball machine after
its fed a Canadian quarter. How many items are there in total? How many more
gumballs are there than the amount a U.S. quarter would have gotten?

Bring in your own gumballs and come up with more math

problems for students to chew on!
