1.0 GENERAL
1.1 DESCRIPTION
This section includes, but is not limited to; Sub surface soil, Rock and ground water
Exploration,Fieldandlaboratorytesting,geotechnicalengineeringfortheSub surface
investigationandfoundationreport.
Asoilinvestigationhasbeencompletedandisapartoftenderdocument.TheContractor
shall complete a site investigation, if required, for boreholes as per specified in this
section.
Atleast6boreholestodepthof50Msbelowthegroundlevel.
Therecommendationtobederivedfromthenewsoilinvestigationshallbefollowedin
allaspectsconcerningdepthanddiametersofpiles.

1.2 WORKINCLUDED
Carry out the following and submit observations, report and recommendations to the
Engineer/ProjectManager
 Subsurfaceexplorationofsite,soilandrocks.
 Groundwaterinvestigation.
 Laboratorytestingofsoil,rockandwatersamples.
 Descriptionofsubsurfaceandgroundwaterconditions.
 SelectionofGeotechnicalparameters.
 Developingfoundationrecommendations,includingconstructionconsiderationsfor
theproposedworks.
 Developingrecommendationsforsitepreparationincludingearthwork
 Reporting the result of all fields, laboratory and analytical work in a final geo
technicalreport.
 Review of foundation drawings to determine if they are in compliance with the
recommendationsofthegeotechnicalreport.
The works shall not be limited to the above but shall include all that is required to
confirmtheadequacyofthefoundationsandthesafetyoftheproposedstructure.

1.3 QUALITYASSURANCE
Engageasoilinvestigationspecialistfirmthathasspecializedinthistypeofworkfora
continuous period of more than 5 (five) years. Submit evidence of the above
qualificationtotheEngineer/ProjectManagerforapprovalofthespecialistfirm.
The Contractor shall control the quality of items to meet the requirements of this
specification,applicablecodesandstandards,andothercontractdocuments.

ASTM D 158700 Practice for Thinwalled Tube Sampling of soils for Geo technical
Purpose.

ASTMD471994TestMethodforPressureMeterTestinginsoils.
Where work is performed using other standards, or procedures, submit these
standardsorprocedurestotheEngineer/ProjectManagerforapproval.

1.5 QUALITYREQUIREMENTS
Maintainandreportrecordsoffieldactivitiesasspecifiedunder"Submittalsduringwork
performanceandafterCompletion".
VerifythatallrecordsarecompleteinallrespectspriortosubmittaltotheEngineer/
ProjectManager.
Anyunusualcircumstancesencounteredduringfieldactivitiesshallberecorded
andreported.
Qualityrequirementsforlaboratorytestingshallinclude,butnotbelimitedto:
x Controlofmeasuringandtestequipment.
x Identificationandcontrolofsamples.
x Storageandhandlingofsamples.
x Useofpropertestmethodsinaccordancewithreferencedstandards.
 
In cases where conditions are discovered that have an impact on the validity of
previouslyrecordedtestdataassociatedwiththecondition,submitawrittenreportto
the Engineer / Project Manager with a statement of the corrective action taken to
ensurethevalidityoftestdataandcorrectpreviouslyreporteddata.

1.6 SUBMITTALS
Submit the following Documents during performance of the work and after its
completion.
- WrittenProgressReports.
- Boringlogs,Fieldtestresults
- Preliminary sub surface conditions and preliminary geo technical design
recommendationsfortheproposedstructures.
- A final geo technical report (to include all information and data developed
during field and laboratory phase; "As Built" location drawings of borings, a
complete description of the engineering analysis performed, and all

recommendationsandcommentsdevelopedfromthedataandanalysis.
- Written conformation of opinions and recommendations, which may have been
giveninverbaldiscussion.
- Written comments on foundation drawings and specifications, and ultimately a
letter confirming that the foundation design and specifications are in conformity
withrecommendationsofthegeotechnicalreport.

2.0 MATERIAL(NOTINCLUDED)

3.0 EXECUTION
3.1 SHIPPINGHANDLINGANDSTORAGE
This section includes, but is not limited to; Sub surface soil, Rock and ground water
Exploration, Field and laboratory testing, geotechnical engineering for the identify
samples in accordance with the requirements specified under relevant
clausesofthisspecification.
Handle,shipandstoresamplesinaccordancewiththerequirementsofapplicablecodes
andstandards,usingproceduresapprovedbytheEngineer/ProjectManager.

3.2 FIELDINSPECTION
The work shall be subject to field surveillance inspection by the Engineer/Project
Manager;howeverthisinspectionshallnotrelievetheContractorfromhisresponsibility
to confirm to the requirements of this specification, and all other applicable
requirements.
Provide qualified geo technical Engineer to direct the field operations and to co
ordinatetheworkwiththeEngineer/ProjectManager.

3.3 TESTING
 Performalltestinginaccordancewithapprovedprocedures.

3.4 TESTBORING
Standard penetration test boring, undisturbed sample boring, rock coring or other
approvedmethodsforobtainingsamplesandinformationonsoilandrockstrengthand
consistency.
Carry out soil exploration work by boring boreholes of numbers and to depths as
indicatedondrawing.
The boring location and the type of exploration methods shall be as indicated on the
drawings or as directed by the Engineer/Project Manager.  The geo technical engineer
who is directing field operations may change the locations or depths of borings as the
workprogresses,withthepriorapprovaloftheEngineer/ProjectManager.
 Boringshallbeadvancedbyrotarydrillingmethods. 
 Maintainstableboringatalltimestopreventtheholefromcavingintheuseofdrilling
mud is permitted. Use Bentonite, attapulgite, or biodegradable mud to advance soil

boringbelowthegroundwaterlevel.Notlessthanthe20kgeachofmicatex(orequal)
and barite (or equal) shall be kept at drilling location to
immediately correct any hole stability problem. Maintain the fluid in the boring above
the ground water table at all times. Boring used for installation of observations wells
shallbedrilledonlywithcasingorwithbiodegradablemud.
 Recordobservationsofgroundwaterlevelsinallborings.Recordontheboringlogsall
waterconditions,includinggainorlossofwaterordrillingmud,andthepresenceofgas
orartesianpressure,atthedepthsencountered.
 On completion of the boring, fill holes with neat cement grout. The approximate
proportionofthegroutshallconsistof200litersofwater,80kg(2bags)ofcementand
10kg of bentonite. Pump grout in to the hole through the drilling rods placed at the
bottomofthehole.Donotwithdrawnrodfromthebottomuntiltheholeisfilled.Asthe
rodiswithdrawn,pumpgrouttomaintainthegroutlevelatthetopofthehole.

3.5 STANDARDPENETRATIONTESTBORING
 MakePenetrationTestsandsplitBarrelSamplinginaccordancewithASTM0158699
 A penetration resistance of less than 150mm for 100 blows shall be considered
"refusal"forsoilsamplingmethods
 Take samples at 750mm intervals during first 3 meters of soil penetrated, and at 1.5
meter interval and at every change in strata thereafter, unless otherwise approved by
theEngineer/ProjectManager.
 Use a 50mm outside diameter standard split barrel sampler, use retainer baskets,
springs,orflapvalvestoensuresamplerecovery
 Placesamplesobtainedin%literglassjars7sealedwithvaporseallids.Clearlyidentify
each jar with the use of a water proof marker and show the job name or designation,
boring number, sample number, depth, length of recovery, and standard penetration
resistance.

3.6 UNDISTURBEDSAMPLING
 TakeUndisturbedthinwalled (Shelby)tubesamplingin accordancewithASTM D1587
00.
 TheminimumOutsideDiameterofthinwalled(Shelby)tubesshallbe75mm
 Donotremovetheundisturbedsamplefromthetubebuttrimbackfromtheendsofthe
tube. Fill the space with hot microstalline (non shrinking) wax, or approved equal and
capthetubewithaplasticcapandsealwithhotwaxandtape.
 Clearlyidentifythethinwalledtubewiththeuseofwaterproofmarker,andshowthe
jobname,boringnumber,samplenumber,depth,lengthpushed,lengthrecovered,and
hydraulicpressure.
 Other methods of obtaining undisturbed samples may be required, depending on
conditions encountered during drilling. These may consist of, but are not limited to,
stationerypistonsamplers,pitchersamplesandOsterbergsamples.

3.7 ROCKCORING
 Take rock core samples by means of a diamond drill, as described in ASTM D

3.8 SUPPLEMENTARYBORING.
 In the event of executed borehole logs exhibiting varying subsurface conditions;
submit forthwith in writing, the results of these boreholes to the Engineer/Project
Managerbeforedemobilization.
 If drill holes are abandoned before reaching the specified depth because of
mechanical failure of drilling equipment or other causes, supplement by another
holeadjacenttothefirstatnoextracosttotheEmployer.
 Penetration to the depth where the hole was abandoned may be done by any
methodselected by theContractor that willpermit completion ofthe new hole below
the elevation where the last satisfactory sample was obtained in the abandoned hole.
Make penetration and take samples in the supplementary hole in the same manner
specifiedfortheoriginalhole.

3.9 LABORATORYTESTING
 SubmitalllaboratorytestingassignmentstotheEngineer/ProjectManagerforapproval
beforetesting.
 Laboratory test procedures shall be in accordance with the codes and standards
specified under "Codes and Standards", Nonstandard procedures shall be
submittedinwritingtotheengineerforapprovalpriortotesting.

3.10 ENGINEERINGANALYSIS 
 Developgeotechnicalparametersandrecommendationsfortheuseinthedesignand
constructionoftheproposedbuildingbasedontheengineeringanalysisofallfieldand
laboratorydata.
Recommendations and Comments shall include, but not be limited to the following:
Presenceorabsencesofrock.
 Soil(androck)strataclassification.
 Groundwatertablelevelincludingdesigngroundwaterlevel.
 Identificationoftheaquifer(s)atthesiteandtheircharacteristics.
 Temporary Construction conditions, including excavation, excavation support,
earthpressure,dewateringandimpactonadjacentstructures.
 Bearingcapacityandsettlementofshallowfoundations.
 Piling length, diameter and required capacities for both compression or tension
types.
 Recommendedtestproceduresforfoundations.
 Assessment of the potentially deleterious effects of onsite materials and
ground water, suitability of onsite material for construction, including
backfill. This shall include the recommended cement to be used for
substructure.
 Backfillcompletionrequirements.

 Coefficients of active, passive and at rest earth pressures and coefficients
andangleoffriction.
 Modulus of elasticity and coefficients of vertical and horizontal sub grade
reactions.
 Permeabilitypropertyandpercolationratesofexistingsoil.

3.11 REPORTS
 TheContractorshallsubmittotheEngineer/ProjectManager3setsoftechnicalreport
showingtheboreholeslocations,depthsandillustratingontherecommendationsbased
ontheEngineeringanalysisstatedabove.AnycommentsissuedbytheEngineer/Project
Manager afterwards shall be implemented. The final soil investigation report shall be
usedasabasisforthepilingdesigns.
