Orang-utans sleep in their nests and they usually make a new one
every evening. They also build nests in the daytime to rest and play in. A
mother with young children might build two or three nests a day. They are
woven in the branch of a tree and are usually very well made, like a big
basket. Often they are more than a metre across. Baby orang-utans are
born in these nests.

Ahmad and I are very fond of trekking but not hiking. Although both are activities in which one
walks or hikes through the woods, hiking is done more for leisure on man-made roads or trails, while
trekking is done over a variety of terrain as a means of transportation, adventure, or challenge to the body
and mind. Hiking and trekking can be done over short distances in a day or two or over a longer distance
over the course of several days, weeks or even months but the day to day routines and activity associated
with hiking will be different from that of trekking. Hiking is generally an easy to moderately-paced activity.
Trekking, however, takes place over varied terrain; a trekker may travel on roads, trails and also through
undeveloped terrain. Trekkers will often have to use maps and orienteering skills to find their way, and
must have first aid and survival skills.
Due to our interest in trekking, when we were in Bangkok we decided to go to northern Thailand to
do some trekking. From an agent in Bangkok we booked a four- day trek through northern Thailand. There
were ten people on the trip with us: a young Singaporean who had not been home for ten years; his wife
from Indonesia; an English teacher; two Malaysian students; a middle-aged Chinese couple who were the
only experienced hikers on the trip; Ahmad and me. We also had with us our Thai cook. Ram, our guide,
was a college student who had studied English at a local university. His main job as a group leader was to
prevent members in the group from getting lost, which could easily happen if one should fall behind on an
unmarked trail.
We left Chiang Mai for a three-hour ride north by truck. The terrain became increasingly
mountainous and later we climbed out of the back of the truck and walked for a short distance until we
came to a stream. Following this we took a restful ride on a motorised long boat. Our actual trekking was a
two-hour trek through the hilly countryside very close to the Myanmar border.
The people living in this area had slowly moved down from Southern China about a hundred years
ago. These people belong to different tribes and speak their own languages. They also have their own laws.
Their homes are on the rugged foothills of the Himalayas. Although they seem to be very shy, occasionally
they venture into nearby towns to earn some extra money. The first village we came to belonged to the
Meo tribe. They were not particularly bothered by us as they were quite used to having visitors. We
spotted a few women weaving while chatting away in their own language. They seemed to be not
distracted by us and went about their work happily. However, in recent years their contact with the
outside world has created an interest in money. They now demand payment for each photograph taken
although sweets and chocolates are also acceptable.
We moved on, and my leg muscles ached by the time we reached Lusu village, high in the rugged
hills. We put our bags down, took off our walking shoes, and sat down for a good Thai meal of vegetables,
eggs, rice and chicken curry. Ram had made arrangements with the village headman, so we were expected
guests. There was a comfortable homely air as we ate our dinner outdoors. There was calm as our tired
bodies absorbed the peaceful surroundings.
