makeitwork!"Buttheydon'tknowthatiftheypaidactorsforacoupleofweeksto
rehearse,theywouldsavehundredsofthousandsofdollarsontheset.

yeartogetoutofthat.Witheffort.ThefirstthingIdidwasgotoHawaiiandgettwo

incredible,andinspiring.Someofmyfavoriteactorsweren'tverywellnoticedintheir
careers:JohnLonewasagreatactor,hecamefromthePekingTheatre.AndYunFat
Chow.JohnWooisagreatguyandaninspiringperson.Alongthewaythereare
momentsfromallkindsofmovies,ifIfindfiveminutesinanyfilmworthwatchingitis
worthwatchingthefilm.Ilovefindingthatgemofaperformance.Therearesomany
actorswhoaresotalented.TheonebestthingonMillennium(1996)wasmeetingnew
actorseveryweek.Ialwaystriedtomakethemfeelwelcome.

[oncreatingcharacters]There'sawaythattheActorsStudioworks,theywantyouto
createcharacterbasedonsomeexperiencefromyourownlifesoyoupersonalizeit.If
youputthatinyourroleyourgonnadoit:onceyoucommitandmakeitpersonal,it's
likeathread.Thatthread,onceitspulledchanneledyoudon'tknowwhereit's
comingfrom.Youstartthis'channeling'.Anditstartscomingatsuchaspeed.

IjustfeelluckytogetasmanyshotsasIgetatgoodroles.Reallylucky,indeed.I
alwayslovedmoviesasanescape.Ijustwantedtobeanartist,becauseIdon'tjust
wanttocomeandgoandhavenooneknowIeverlived.Iwantedtomakearecordof
myexistence.Forsomepeopleitdoesn'thappen,evenifthey'rewonderfultalents.
Knockonwood,ithashappenedtome,butIknowmanytalentedpeoplewhoaren't

IhadnoideaIwouldmakemycareerinfilm,butIalwaysknewfrommytheaterwork
thatIwouldbeanactor.Tobehonesttherearehardpartstobeinganactor.I'mstill
comingtotermswithbeingawayfromhome,beinginahotelformonthsonend,losing
girlfriendsandwivesbecauseI'mnottheretomaintainsuchrelationships.

Itdoesseemlikesomeofmyfilmshavebecomecultmoviesandhavedoneverywell
inthelongrun.Inseveralcases,theyhaveproventhemselveswithoutanyhelpatall.

Myfeelingis,Idoalotoflowbudgetfilms.Idon'tdolowbudgetacting.Ihaveno

(2011,onStoneColdandimprovisinghisentirerole)CraigBaxleycamein,Imetwith
himinthelobbyofthehotel,andIsaid:"Craig,ifyounoticeinthescript,everyline
thatChainssayscomesdirectlyfromtheBible."Isaid,"TheminuteIopenmymouth
andsaythefirstone,theaudienceisgoingtobackoff.Theywon'tlistentoafucking
thingIsayafterthat,becauseit'sridiculous."Hesaid,"Whatshouldwedo?"Isaid,
"Letmeimprovisetheentirerole.I'llstaywithinthestructureofthescript,butIwant
toimproviseeveryline."...ThatwasamomentwhereIdecidedtostopbeingafraidof

table.ThenIgotthatlittlestupidassmustache.WalterHillletmedowhateverI
wanted,becauseheunderstoodthatsometimesthesmallestthingcanhelpmefindthe
character.WhathappenedontheCryptsetwasthateveryonewouldsay,'Let'strythis!'
or'Let'strythat!'Weneverwantedtostoptryingnewthings...eventhoughwewere
workingtwelve,fourteenhoursaday!

(2011,onworkingwithEllenBarkininJohnnyHandsome)AssoonasIgotthere(to
NewOrleans),wewentoutdrinkingtogether.Shetookmetoaplacetogetmyear
pierced.Shesaid,"Youneedanearring,youneedabigfuckingearring."Shebought
meabattleaxe[earring]andshesaid,"That'swhatyou'regoingtousetoplayyour
character."Wecreatedourwholedynamicduringthatoneeveningofcarousingthe
FrenchQuarter.Wewerethecouplefromhell.Wewereconstantlyberatingeachother

wantedmetoplayacharacterwhowasthemostoffensivehumanbeingImean,he
wasrapingwomenandbutcheringthem.Isaid,"Ican'tdoit."Anotherguycalledme
outoftheblueonce,andheactuallysaid,"HeyLance,I'vegotaroleforyou.Youwere
borntodothisrole.Itisyou."SoIsaid,"Whatisit?"Andhesaid,"Well,it'sthischild

supposedtorespondtothat?Isaid,"I'mnotinterestedinyourfuckingmovie.Don't

(OnalmostbeingkilledfilmingPiranhaPartTwo:TheSpawninginJamaica)Therewas
acementpiergoingoutintotheharbor,andweputthecamerarightoutontheendof
thatpier,sotheharborwouldlooklikeopenocean.Andwewerehoveringinthe
helicopterwhiletheysettheshotup.Ittooksolongtosettheshotthatnobodynoticed
thisbigsailboatwithahighmastcomingintotheharborbehindus.Andwhenwe
turnedtogoout,themastwasrightthere.Ilookeddownandsawmyfeetonlytwo
feetawayfromit.Ifwe'dhookedit,wewouldhavebeendead.Luckilythepilotwasa
JamaicanAirForcepilotwhohadchaseddrugsmugglers,andhereactedinstinctively
andputthatthingstraightupintheair.Hejustyankedbackonthestickandwewent
upuntilwelostairspeed.Thentheenginestalled.Heflippeditaroundanddove
straightintotheoceantoregainairspeed.Wejustbarelymanagedtoflyoutofthere.
Itwasamiraclewedidn'thitthewater....Wewentovertoanearbyfieldandlanded.
Whenwegotoutofthehelicopteritwasjustthepilotandmewewereshaking.It
wasahellofafuckingride.IrememberJim[Cameron]saidafterwards,"Ithoughtyou
werefuckingdead."Everybodywassoshockedthattheydroppedthecamerainthe
water.Wehadtosendforanewcamera.
