OnJune26,2017atapproximately6:30pmtheNormanCountySheriffsOfficereceiveda911callfrom
MonalisaPerez.MonalisaPerezreportedthatherandherboyfriend,lateridentifiedasPedroRuizIII,were
makingaYouTubevideoandsheaccidentallyshothiminthechest.Perezreportedthattheincidenttook
placeat549USHwy75inNormanCounty.TheNormanCountySheriffsOffice,HalstadRescue,theAda
PoliceDepartment,andtheMinnesotaBureauofCriminalApprehensionresponded.

WhenmedicalpersonnelarrivedonthescenetheylocatedPedroRuizIII.PedroRuizIIIhadasingle
gunshotwoundtohischest.Medicalpersonnelattemptedtoperformlifesavingmeasures.

NormanCountyDeputyCoryWelzarrivedonthesceneandmembersoftheHalstadRescueTeampointed
outtohimtheareawherethegunwaslocated.DeputyWelzlocatedagoldDesertEagle.50caliberpistol
onthegrassnearthehouseandsecuredthefirearm.

NormanCountyDeputyChrisLeeapproachedMonalisaPerez.PerezreportedthatPedroRuizIIIwanted
tomakeaYouTubevideoofhershootingabookandhebelievedthatthebookwouldstopthebullet.
MonalisaPerezpointedoutcamerasandstatedthattheentireincidentwasrecorded.AtthattimeDeputy
LeetookthetwocamerasandgavethemtoDeputyWelztosecureasevidence.

MedicalpersonnelinformedDeputyLeethatPedroRuizIIIwasdeclareddeadatthesceneandDeputy
LeeinformedMonalisaPerez.MonalisaPerezthenstatedthatPedroRuizIIIhadbeentryingtogetherto
shootthebookwhilehehelditforaYouTubevideoforawhile.PedroRuizIIIsetuptheGoProontheback
ofavehicleandtheothercameraonaladdernearby.MonalisaPerezreportedthateventuallyPedroRuiz
IIIconvincedhertoshootthebook.PedroRuizIIIhadshownheradifferentbookthathehadshotandthe
bulletdidnotgoallthewaythrough.PerezstatedthatsheshotfromaboutafootawaywhilePedroRuizIII
heldthebooktohischest.MonalisaPerezdescribedthefirearmthatsheusedanditmatchedthe.50
caliberDesertEaglelocatedonthescene.
