Courts sweeping decision in favor of marriage
equality, the court announced this week it has
agreed to review a case in which a Colorado bakery
refused to sell a wedding cake to a same-sex couple.
The Supreme Court announced in its orders
list on Monday it had agreed to take up the case
of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights
Commission in the aftermath of the courts periodic
conference on Thursday. It takes a vote of at least
four justices to grant a writ of certiorari or agree

Amy Siskinds work is the kind of genius historians
will refer to in the next decade as the denitive
chronicler of what went wrong and how.
Experts in authoritarianism advise to keep a
list of things subtly changing around you, so youll
remember, she likes to say.
Each day brings a bombshell that in ordinary times
would dominate the news cycle for months with
sweeping investigations. Trump takes to Twitter over
the slightest perceived slight, promoting the fakest
narrative he can spell out in 140 characters about
news he wants his followers to ignore.
But that, like so much else, is just a charade
that masks a whole spate of other alleged
crimes and misdemeanors now under multiple
investigations.While we are hyperventilating about a
Tweet, something else much darker is happening.
And thats where Siskind, who identies as a gay
woman, comes in. For the past seven months she has
taken note and documented every instance of the
abnormal or bizarre, spending 15-20 hours a week
and talking to thousands of people to synthesize
events as they happen.
She publishes her work (dubbed the Weekly List)
chronicling the bad deeds of the Trump administration
on social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook
and Medium, attracting hundreds of thousands of
weekly readers. Her work has been highlighted by The

The U.S. Supreme Court reversed
Monday an Arkansas high court ruling
allowing the state to refuse to place
a lesbian parents name on the birth
certicate of their child if the parent isnt
the birth mother.
In the case of Pavan v. Smith, the court
in a per curiam decision issued a summary
reversal of the Arkansas Supreme Court
decision on the basis it contravened the
2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges
extending marriage equality nationwide,
which was handed down exactly two
years to the day of the reversal.
When a married woman gives birth
in Arkansas, state law generally requires
the name of the mothers male spouse to
appear on the childs birth certicate
regardless of his biological relationship to
the child, the decision says. According to
the court below, however, Arkansas need
not extend that rule to similarly situated
same-sex couples: The State need not,
in other words, issue birth certicates
including the female spouses of women
who give birth in the State. Because
Military chiefs seek 6-month delay in trans enlistments

The military service chiefs are seeking
a delay in implementation of a policy
allowing openly transgender people to
enlist in the U.S. military, the Associated
Press reported last week.
Laura Ochoa, a defense spokesperson,
responded to the report by denying
Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work
has made a recommendation on the issue,
suggesting the situation remains in ux.
The Deputy Secretary of Defense has
not provided a formal recommendation
to the Secretary of Defense, therefore no
decision has been made and there is no
update to the current review, Ochoa said.

to place the names of both lesbian
parents on a childs birth certicate as a
result of litigation led by three lesbian

Senate delays vote on Trumpcare
The U.S. Senate shelved on Tuesday a plan to vote this week on a measure
seeking to repeal and replace Obamacare as LGBT rights supporters continue
to raise the alarm about its impact both for LGBT people and America at large.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced the chamber
would no longer hold a vote on the Better Care Reconciliation Act on Thursday,
delaying the vote until after lawmakers return from July 4 recess.

dierences that we have that we continue to try to litigate, McConnell said.
Consequently, we will not be voting on the bill this week, but were still working
toward getting at least 50 people in a comfortable place.
Five Republican senators, the latest of which was Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah),
declared they couldnt support the bill in its current form not because it would
dramatically cut coverage, but because it doesnt go far enough to repeal the
Aordable Care Act.
LGBT rights supporters held a conference call with reporters on Tuesday to
raise awareness about the bill, which seeks to phase out the Medicaid expansion
under Obamacare to pay for a tax cut mostly for the wealthiest Americans.
Human Rights Campaign President Chad Grin said the legislation would
have a devastating impact on LGBT people because theyre disproportionately
aected by health disparities.
Both the House and Senate versions of the bill gut core provisions of the ACA,

Rep. DelBene calls for LGBT Equality Day
On the second anniversary of the U.S.
Supreme Court decision in favor of marriage
equality, Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.) took to
the House oor to call for the institution of an
LGBT Equality Day honoring the occasion.
DelBene recognized Monday, June 26 as LGBT
Equality Day on the basis of historic decisions
from the Supreme Court on that date not only
on marriage equality, but other LGBT issues.
Today, we mark the anniversary of
landmark victories at the Supreme Court that
moved our country toward one that is more
fair, more equal and more inclusive of all
Americans and we are a better, stronger
nation for it, DelBene said.

Meanwhile, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), the only out lesbian in Congress introduced
a companion resolution in the Senate on the same day.

Trump: testing crucial in defeating HIV
President Trump issued a statement Tuesday observing National HIV Testing
Day, calling the disease one of the worlds most signicant health challenges and
encouraging Americans to learn their HIV status.
Thanks to concerted eorts to diagnose and treat more and more people, Americans
living with HIV today are living longer, healthier lives than ever before, Trump said.
My administration is determined to build upon those improvements and continue
supporting domestic and global health programs that prioritize testing and treatment
for HIV/AIDS.
The statement obtained in advance by the Blade marked the rst time President
Trump has explicitly addressed HIV/AIDS either during the campaign trail or during
his administration. The presidents statement comes shortly after six members of the
Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS resigned in protest, asserting the president
doesnt care about the epidemic.
Trump calledtesting crucial in combating HIV/AIDS, adding wevenever been closer
to conquering the epidemic.
HIV carriers who do not know they have the virus put themselves and others at
risk, missing out on life-saving treatment and possibly, inadvertently aecting others,
Trump said. People who are not currently receiving treatment transmit more than 90
percent of infections, as they do not benet from treatments that dramatically reduce
the amount of virus in their bodies. That is why the key to interrupting the transmission
is a simple, routine HIV test.
Trump supports legislation pending before Congress that would repeal Obamacare,
which HIV/AIDS advocates seeking to combat HIV/AIDS have criticized. The Congressional
Budget Oce estimates it would lead to an estimated 22 million losing health care
coverage under the proposal. Most of the loss of coverage would be the result of cuts to
Medicaid, which provides care to an estimated 40 percent of people with HIV.
Trumps scal year 2018 budget request also proposes steep cuts in HIV/AIDS
programs. Among them is a $150 million cut to the Centers for Disease Control for HIV
testing and prevention initiatives.

Schiff reintroduces bill to regulate troubled teen industry
Measure would mandate
health, safety standards

Lost in the cacophony of the Russia
investigation and the newly proposed
healthcare bill is the fact that some
elected U.S. representatives still care
about governance. Among them is Rep.
Adam Schi (D-Calif.), who on Thursday
reintroduced the Stop Child Abuse in
Residential Programs for Teens Act,
legislation that would require residential
treatment programs to enforce a set of
minimum health and safety standards,
specically prohibiting discrimination
against LGBTQ youth and young people
with mental illness.
The Stop Child Abuse in Residential
Programs for Teens Act (SCARPTA),
originally introduced on July 14, 2015,
was built on a bill championed by
former California Rep. George Miller. In
2008, Miller held hearings with painful
testimony about such abuse and
neglect that he ordered a Government
Accountability Oce report on the

Similar celebrations open to
media during Obama years

A Washington Blade reporter was ejected
froman event Wednesdayat the U.S. Justice
Department observing June as Pride month
among the last of the events hosted by
LGBT anity groups for federal workers.
Similar celebrations under the Obama
administration were open to the media.
Dozens of employees among them
LGBT attorneys within the Justice Department
and federal law enforcement ocials
attended the event, which was titled
troubled teen industryunregulated last
resort residential treatment facilities and
boot camps that market to desperate
parents of children deemed unruly, LGBT,
addicted, or acting out with some form of
undiagnosed mental illness.
The GAO reported that in just one
year (2005), 1,619 program employees
in 34 states were involved in incidents of
abuse, including substantiated accounts
of starvation, excessive use of physical
restraints and isolation, severe verbal
abuse and intimidation, and medical
malpractice. Survivors of Institutional
Abuse (SIA) reported 300 deaths on
their In Memorial page, deaths linked to
starvation, medical malpractice, beatings
and suicide.
Millers hearings and the GAO report
emphasized how the lack of federal
oversight and deceptive marketing,
no unied regulations among states
regarding licensing and regulations of
residential facilities put vulnerable children
at greater risk. Additionally, if a resident
died or the media got a whi of the abuse,
the unscrupulous owner would move to
another state and reopen under another
name. Often the con artists, who prey
Solidarity through Pride and held in the
Great Hall of the Justice Department building.
Representing the Justice Department
was acting Assistant Attorney General for
National Security Dana Boente, an Obama
administration hold-over who also serves as
U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Whatever an individuals background,
Americans come together to support one
another, Boente said. In this country, we
know that our unity makes us stronger.
Were united in our respect for the rule of
law and the preservation of the freedoms
of all of us. Americans understand that in
this country liberty means liberty for all.
Freedom belongs not to any one race,
gender or orientation.
Boente also invoked the shooting at the
congressional baseball practice earlier
this month in which House Majority
Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) was severely
wounded. Lesbian Capitol Police ocer
Crystal Griner, who was on the scene and
helped take down the attacker but was
wounded herself, isa hero, Boente said.

LGBT community; she is also a hero for
the entire country, Boente said.

be combatting the rise of violent crime
and the Justice Department was already
taking steps to pursue that goal.

Na criticized the decision to close the
event to media outlets.
These events have historically been open
to the media and this action at DOJ today is
an unfortunate break with tradition, Na
said. Holding Pride celebrations behind
closed doors violates the very spirit of
such events and we urge all government
agencies to let the sun shine in.

that their children are safe and in the care

According to the press release, Schis
legislation would:

withholding food, water or shelter from a
child, putting a child in seclusion, and all
other forms of physical and mental abuse
Require licensed medical sta on hand
at all times in case of an emergency and
require all sta members to be properly
trained in recognizing and responding
to signs of child abuse and neglect, and
mental health crises
Allow youth to stay in contact with
their parents so that they know their
children are safe, and provide uninhibited
access to a child abuse reporting hotline
Publicly disclose any past record of
child abuse and their state licensing status
so families can make informed decisions
about where to send their children.

and we will protect and defend and
celebrate that and protect the rights of
all transgender persons, Sessions said.
Sessions has a long anti-LGBT history as
a U.S. senator from Alabama. Along with
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, he revoked
guidance to schools assuring transgender
students have access to the bathroom

opposed to LGBT Rights in Zimbabwe.
Should I have been concerned while
visiting Victoria Falls with my partner?
da Silva: Gays wont have issues in
tourist areas or big cities in Zimbabwe. You
may have problems in small towns with the
police. The State of Zimbabwe is anti-gay.
Blade: Can the U.S. help the ght for
LGBTQ rights in Africa?
da Silva: Megaphone diplomacy didnt
consider how African governments would
deal with the pushing, blaming and shaming.
That approach didnt work well. African
governments dont want to appear weak or
appear to bow to the Imperialists. It put a
target sign on the backs on the African LGBTQ
community. Behind the scenes eorts work
better. We have learned to be more strategic
and diplomatic which is paying o.
Blade: What are your priorities for
Lambda Mozambique?
da Silva: Continue to lobby the State for
support. MPs are not directly elected so its
dicult to gain support from parliament.
Organize, network and train new
leadership to support the LGBTQ struggle.
It is important that we know each other
and that we are visible. Develop and revise
programs to meet the needs of LAMBDA
Mozambique members and partners.

The event was a big gay Easter brunch in
Africa where homosexuality is outlawed in
32 of 55 states. Our hosts, Danilo da Silva
and his husband Igor were married in South
Africa under Portuguese law but live openly
in Maputo, Mozambique. I was there with
my partner Mike and our friends James and
Je who were married in Washington, D.C.,
right before they were posted to Maputo.
In addition to an engagingly eclectic mix of
straight and (mostly) LGBTQ friends from
Africa and Europe, Danilos mother and
younger brother were there; and the couple
cares for Igors father who lives with them.
Danilo da Silva is executive director of
LAMBDA Mozambique, founded in 2006
and supported by 164 full-time sta and
volunteers across Mozambique. Da Silva
is one of the co-founders and has been
director for about eight years.
I interviewed da Silva from D.C. after my
rst trip to Africa via video teleconference.
Washington Blade: Can LGBTQ people
live openly in Mozambique?
Danilo da Silva: Yes and No.
Mozambican society has a live-and-let-live
attitude toward homosexuality as long as
it is not in your household. Mozambique is
not pro gay per se. Gays are not harmed
or harassed on the streets. Homosexuality
is tolerated as long as its not in your family.
Blade: So, how did your mother come
to accept who you are?
da Silva: Mom went through a long
process to accept me. It wasnt easy for
her. She doesnt talk much about it. Im the
eldest son and one of her favorites. Igor had
diculty with his sister but his parents and
da Silva: People assume that someone is
taking advantage of the situation. Waiters,
for example, would just hand the bill to
Igor who is of Portuguese descent. People
know us now so this is less of a problem.
Weve been together for 10 years and
were married 5 years ago in Cape Town.
Mozambique does not recognize LGBTQ
marriage or provide legal protections for
civil unions.
Blade: What happens in families with
gay members?
da Silva: People are ostracized. Those
afraid to be ostracized by their families dont
come out. Some folks still marry and have
kids and live the double life. They seek men
on the side. We do not have a term for down
low. We use brother or friend. Many who
do come out, move away from their families
to the cities to be free and anonymous.
Blade: What about trans people?
da Silva: Trans people dont hide who
they are; and their families treat them more
harshly. Trans youth are most likely become
homeless as a result. Trans people band
together, create their own communities, or
houses, which have a family structure for
self support and protection. Trans people,
however, have the same problems with sex
work, drugs and other criminal activities
found in the U.S.
Blade: Are there support organizations
or institutions for LGBT Mozambicans?
da Silva: Aside from LAMBDA, no,
not nancially or technically. There is no
government, church or community center
support for the LGBTQ community including
HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.
Blade: Marriage equality is sweeping
the globe, is it time for gay marriage in
Africa?
da Silva: No, its not time for gay marriage
at LGBT conference

The Party of European Socialists and Rainbow Rose, which is its LGBT and
intersex network, will host a separate conference at the Spanish Socialist
Workers Partys Madrid headquarters on Friday.
[WorldPride] is a celebration of diversity and equality, said Beatrz Becerra,
vice president of the European Parliaments Subcommittee on Human Rights.
Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena and Daniele Viotti, a member of the
European Parliament who is from Italy, are among those who also spoke at the
conference on Monday. Canadian MP Randy Boissonnault, who is Prime Minister
Justin Trudeaus special adviser on LGBTQ2 (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,
queer and two-spirited) issues, was also in attendance.
Former Icelandic Prime Minister Jhanna Sigurardttir, who became the
worlds rst openly LGBT head of government in 2009, spoke before a panel that
focused on gender equity. She said the issue and the global movement for LGBT
and intersex rights are linked.
There will never be gender balance or any other balance without freedom or
love; brotherly love, sisterly love, romatic love, said Sigurardttir as her wife,
Jnna Lesdttir, sat in the front row.
Sigurardttir added freedom and equality are the foundations of all
human rights.
No one should have to endure oppression, abuse or lack of freedom, she said.

Supreme Court to hear gay wedding cake refusal case

of Masterpiece Cakeshop, which was

cake to a same-sex couple under
Colorados human rights law, it could
establish a religious carve out for denial

Praising the Supreme Courts decision
to take up the case as a prelude to
guaranteeing religious freedom in the
name of anti-LGBT discrimination was
Tony Perkins, president of the Family
Research Council.
The U.S. Supreme Court now has an
opportunity to issue a ruling that makes
clear the government has no authority to
force Americans like Jack Phillips to use
their artistic talents to celebrate events
with which they have a moral and/or
religious disagreement, Perkins said.

without action for nearly a year. The

of respecting the freedom of Americans to
follow their deeply held beliefs, especially
when it comes to participating in activities
and ceremonies that so many Americans
consider sacred, Perkins said.
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear
the case after an administrative judge
ruled Masterpiece Cakeshop illegally
discriminated against a same-sex couple

upheld in 2015. The Colorado Supreme
Court has declined to review these
decisions and let them stand.
The case was result of Charlie Craig and
David Mullins, a same-sex couple, asking
Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece
Cakeshop, to design and produce a
wedding cake in 2012 for their wedding in
Massachusetts. Phillips refused based on his
religious beliefs, but said he would be happy
to make and sell them other baked goods.
In 2013, the American Civil Liberties
Union and the ACLU of Colorado led a
lawsuit on behalf of Mullins and Craig,
alleging the bakery discriminated on the
basis of sexual orientation.
James Esseks, director of the ACLUs LGBT
Project, said in a statement the Supreme
Court upon review of the case should rule
in favor of the same-sex couple and uphold
Colorados non-discrimination law based
on established legal principles.
The law is squarely on David and
Charlies side because when businesses
are open to the public, theyre supposed
to be open to everyone, Esseks said.

While the right to ones religious beliefs
is fundamental, a license to discriminate
is not. Same-sex couples like David and
Charlie deserve to be treated with the
same dignity and respect as anyone else,
and were ready to take that ght all the
way to the Supreme Court.
Kasey Suredini, acting CEO and
president of strategy at Freedom for
All Americans, said in a statement the
Supreme Court should remember the
same-sex couple seeking a wedding cake
were unfairly denied service at a business
because of their sexual orientation.
When the Supreme Court hears this
case, the justices should consider the
reality that businesses that serve the
public must be open to all, with no excuses
and without exception, Suredini said.
All of us cherish the American promise
of religious freedom as protected under
the U.S. Constitution, but that doesnt
give anyone the right to discriminate
against others. This case will be an
important opportunity to have a national
conversation about the values we all
share as Americans and the importance
of equal treatment for everyone.

Siskind goes viral with weekly List of Trump lies

Siskind is considered a rising journalistic star.
A NYU journalism professor called her work
thoroughly journalistic and much needed.
Siskind said her work on Trump
originated from her post-election reading
about how authoritarian governments
take hold behavior that seems shocking
at rst quickly becomes normal.
And on LGBT rights, she has a
particularly urgent message, especially if
you continue to believe that Trump hasnt
really gone after the LGBTQ community.
The Blade spoke with Siskind by phone
from her home in Westchester County, N.Y.
BLADE: Whats the motivating force
behind your work tracking Trumps
lies and the administrations bizarre
behavior? You told The Washington
Post that it developed when you read
about the process of normalization,
that we come to accept things that are
abnormal because we get lost in this
slow drift of bizarreness. So I guess
my question is, what strikes you so
far as the most bizarre thing thats
happened?
AMY SISKIND: Though there are too
many to mention, I think what strikes me
most is that we are living in a constant
state of chaos. There are so many items
each and every day that are, in and of
themselves, shocking. In normal times
these things would be individual stories
that would be covered by our media for
weeks or months. But, because there
are so many of them, weve lost track of
accountability for these items or being
able to even remember them. As a result,
weve in a way normalized things that in
any other time in our country or in our
lifetimes would be shocking and deserving
of outrage around the country. Were
bombarded with so many of these each
and every day weve become desensitized.
Thats led to a sort of acceptance
because we are sort of plowed over by all
thats not normal.
BLADE: Even journalists are plowed
over. Theres tacit endorsement when
they do not properly challenge him.
SISKIND: The bar was set pretty low by
our media I have myself been a critic of
the media early on about some journalists
complimenting him for reading o a
teleprompter or covering him like you
would a normal candidate, talking about
things like infrastructure when it was
pretty obvious even before he took oce
that he was not going to be normal.
Even though it started out that way, I
am grateful to see a shift.
I think the media has realized they are
under siege now and being silenced. I

see mainstream journalists beginning to
form a community and protecting one
another. Journalists from the right are
still amplifying authoritarian messages
and giving credence to news thats not
true news. I am starting to see change.
What The List does that our media is
not able to do because they need to
cover every story as if it were a traditional
administration (or in Trumps case its a
regime) is give some perspective week
by week about whats happening.
What mainstream journalists are
reporting is very in the moment but it
doesnt, with the exception of a few like
maybe Rachel Maddow, trace back the story.
For example, The List can follow the
Deutsche Bank over weeks or months
whereas most of the reporting is just here
we are in this moment and today. So what
I really hope to accomplish with The List is
to access all the stories about Deutsche
Bank that have happened over the last
several months since Ive been doing The
List. Its a journalistic way of tying things
together that our media is not doing.
Typically, I spend 15 to 20 hours a
week on each list because so many of the
things I put in the list are not widely seen,
but to me are really important.
I spend a lot of time covering treatment
of dierent subsets of people because
thats part of authoritarianism; I mean
how you treat one then how do you treat
the LGBTQ community how you treat
people of dierent religions and people
of color so I make sure to highlight things
that are really not normal.
I cover the way citizens are acting but
also the way the administration is acting.
BLADE: What do you make of gay
sexual orientation and gender identity.

who say he hasnt really done anything
specically bad to LGBT people?
SISKIND: Thats an uninformed
argument. I think the LGBT community
is in grave danger with Trump and the
overriding thing is that we are invisible to
the Trump administration.
And Ill give specic examples of ways
that he is hurting our community, but
the overall theme is were invisible thats
never good for any community.
Lets start with the fact that theres no
recognition of LGBTQ Pride month. When
we are made invisible you take away
our identity. Trump is doing that by not
recognizing Pride:hes doing that by not
including LGBTQ people in the Census.
Thats a really big deal and I have it in
my weekly list 32 that just came out; NPR
did a Freedom of Information Act request
on work that was done by HUD and they
said Census data was essential for the
inclusion of the LGBT community to be
part of the Census. Trumps response
is that they dont think its appropriate
to ask questions of sexual orientation
and gender identity topics, which is an
argument that makes us invisible.
BLADE: That Census information
is used throughout government to
implement civil rights protections and
to ensure representation and equality.
SISKIND: Point is that if youre invisible
you dont need protections or rights. So,
you can see the path down which he is
taking the nation.
This was in week 31. In week 32, his
Secretary of Education DeVos said she
wont go after schools that discriminate
against transgender students amongst

other things. They are not going to push
on the civil rights issues. That was just
one week!
Not protecting transgender people is an
issue. Theyve also already taken away - in
certain government departments - worker
protections on the basis of sexual orientation.
So when you make people invisible,
you dont need to protect them against
discrimination in housing and workplace
discrimination. So, in many parts of the
Trump administration its legally acceptable
to discriminate against people based on
their sexual orientation or gender.
And thats that headline worthy!!! That
should scream out with three exclamation
points at the end.
People who dont think he hasnt
done anything against LGBT people are
missing the point hes slowly eroding
our protections and making it legal to
discriminate against us because of our
BLADE: Its very much like what you
said about authoritarianism a slow
erosion of normalcy.
SISKIND: Exactly! And end of rights for
dierent subsets of people. You can see
the dierent subsets of people that are
under attack. Its pretty much everyone
thats not white, straight, Christian and
male. We can have the same conversation
about ways women are being attacked or
Muslim Americans or Jewish Americans or
Latinos or immigrants or black Americans
or something for everybody.
BLADE: Those, of course, include
LGBT people...
SISKIND: Yes, we are under assault in so
many ways. Lets talk about Gorsuch. Just
this week his Supreme Court appointee
argued against gay adoption. And the
scariest part of that to me is that its not
based on fact. Theres study after study
showing gay and lesbian parents are
actually superior parents to heterosexual
parents! So, its not based on any factual
study, its based on his own bias.
These are the people that Trump is
bringing into power and into authority. If
that doesnt scare you! Theres now, I think
eight states, since he took power that are
making it illegal for gay couples to adopt.
I know California now has banned
ocial government business travel to
those eight states.
But theres eight states since he took

workplace discrimination, gay adoption,
and what happened to transgender people,
transgender students being excluded from
protection under the Civil Rights Act and in
college too.

Huge crowds ock to Frederick Pride

Organizers of Frederick Pride reported that anywhere between 7,000 and
9,000 attended the sixth annual event on June 24. They had anticipated 6,000.
A total of 110 vendors, both for prot and non-prot, were on hand at the
festivals venue at Carroll Creek Linear Park.
Attendees received a Frederick Pride rainbow bracelet from welcome stations
at each major entry to the park. Businesses were aorded an opportunity to
oer discounts/specials to anyone wearing one of these bracelets. This Buy
Pride program was free to any area business.
The festival featured bands, drag, DJ, dancing, and other live acts at the
amphitheater with smaller acts and dancing at the Market Street location.
Frederick Pride continued its unbelievable growth in 2017, Kris Fair, chair of
the Frederick Center board, told the Blade.

AIDS Action Baltimore offers New Horizons

New Horizons, a program of AIDS Action Baltimore (AAB), was established
last November as a way to boost empowerment and break the bonds of
homophobia, racism and stigma in same gender-loving (SGL) men in Baltimore.
AAB is a non-prot organization that has been providing essential services to
people with HIV/AIDS for 30 years.
New Horizons oers networking every rst Wednesday of the month, HIV
testing every last Wednesday, social events monthly, and an Art Creation Project.
Most events take place at the Waxter Center, 1000 Cathedral St. in Baltimore.

Intimate partner violence support group debuts

The LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton Health Care has launched
a new weekly support group for LGBT individuals who have experienced incidents
of intimate partner violence. The Center promises that those aected individuals
can nd community, healing, and connections at this new support group.
The LGBT community is strong and resilient, yet domestic violence forces
many back into the closet with keeping secrets and living in constant fear, said
Randall Leonard LCSW-C, one of the groups facilitators in a statement. We
want to show survivors that theyre not alone and give them a safe place to get
support and heal.
The group began on June 27 and operates in 20-week cycles; the time and
location of meetings will be disclosed to enrolled members only. Individuals who
enroll while a group is already in session will be placed on a wait list, and may
join the group at the beginning of the next cycle.
Initial behavioral health assessments are required prior to joining the group.

LONDON A substantial reduction in HIV rates among gay men in London
might be the beginning of the end of the epidemic there, public health ocials
say according to reports in the Guardian and other news outlets.
New data from Public Health England speaks of the possible elimination of
HIV, revealing the rst downturn in the epidemic among gay and bisexual men
since it began, thanks to a combination of frequent testing of people at high risk
of infection and rapid treatment.
In the year beginning October 2015, HIV diagnoses fell by 32 percent
compared with October 2014 to September 2015 among men who have sex
with men (MSM) attending ve of the biggest London sexual health clinics, the
Guardian reports.
The reasons for the fall are thought to be the big step up in testing, so that gay
men at high risk because their partner has HIV would be oered testing every
three months, and oering immediate antiretroviral drug treatment to those
who test positive, which suppresses the virus, the Guardian reports.
At the same time, signicant numbers of gay men in London have been taking
pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), one of the same drugs that can prevent them
becoming infected with the virus. Some have been involved in trials to establish
how eective PrEP is, while others have bought the drug online following
successful trials in the U.S.
Valerie Delpech, head of HIV surveillance for Public Health England, said
the ve big clinics had seen a substantial fall in the number of men becoming
infected with HIV and that the success could be replicated across the country
and beyond, the Guardian reports.
There was a drop in infections among gay and bisexual men of 17 percent in

England as a whole and a drop of 25 percent in London. The ve clinics that had
a 32 percent drop in new diagnoses, from 880 to 595, had stepped up testing to
the point that they were responsible for 41 percent of all the tests carried out in

Report nds bullying down in British schools

LONDON In other good British LGBT news, it appears the level of
homophobic bullying in Britains secondary schools has fallen by a third in
a decade, according to a study from the University of Cambridge, BBC News
reports.
The study, commissioned by the gay rights charity Stonewall, says the use of
insulting language is less frequent and schools are more likely to prevent attacks
on gay pupils.
But the report says 45 percent of gay pupils still face bullying.
Such behavior needs to be urgently addressed, says Stonewalls Ruth Hunt,
the BBC article notes.
The study, carried out by the Centre for Family Research at the University of
Cambridge, suggests gay, lesbian and transgender pupils in England, Wales and
Scotland are less likely to face homophobic bullying than ve or 10 years ago.
In 2012, 55 percent of gay pupils surveyed faced bullying because of their
sexuality; the report for 2017 suggests that has fallen to 45 percent, the BBC
reports.
The culture of school has begun to change, suggests the study, based on a

sample of 3,700 11-19-year-olds.
Since the 2007 School Report, the number of lesbian, gay and bi pupils bullied

because of their sexual orientation has fallen by almost a third, the report
reads. The number of schools who say this bullying is wrong has nearly trebled,
and homophobic remarks are far less likely to be heard.
More than a third of schools now have a dedicated club or society for gay
pupils and two in ve pupils know of an openly gay teacher, the study suggests.
But there are wide regional variations in levels of tolerance.

Pride, prejudice and
teachable moments
Our republic is built on
bridging the divide

We awake in an upended age. Past
gains are at risk. Greedy men appeal
to the worst in people. Members of the
long-dominant racial group, feeling under
threat as their numbers wane, aggres-
sively move to lock in their power at oth-
ers expense. Crude demagoguery wins
the day, hate crimes spike, and members
of Congress respond to a narrowly avert-
ed massacre by insisting on more and
more guns. America teeters on an abyss.
The values we were raised to uphold,
like faithfulness and compassion, and
constitutional principles like due process
and equal protection, are not self-imple-
menting. They live or die by how we gov-
ern ourselves. Experience teaches that if
we seek justice, we must act with justice.
Yet we can barely talk to one another,
barely see one another.
Last week saw the release of the po-
lice dash cam video of the 2016 murder
of Philando Castile in Minnesota, as well
as a video of Castiles girlfriend Diamond
Reynolds and her 4-year-old daughter in
the back of a police cruiser shortly after
Castile was shot in front of them. The girl
comforted her mother and urged her
to be calm because I dont want you to
get shooted. The videos are almost too
much to bear. Their release followed the
acquittal of Jeronimo Yanez, the ocer
who shot Castile seven times during a
trac stop. His family received a $3 mil-
lion settlement.
These incidents betray our values. An
assumption of black criminality too of-
ten undergirds them. We must confront
this, build on reform eorts, and ensure
better police training in de-escalation
methods. When we fall into the trap of
reducing community-police relations to
a zero-sum game of us vs. them, we all
lose. When our outrage prompts broad-
brush responses like barring police from
Pride parades, we fall into the pit of re-
sponding to dehumanization of victims

refers to this as single-entry moral book-
keeping, where only one side of the led-
ger counts.
Dogma, whether from right or left,
blinds us to the nuance that lls our daily
lives. Messy details get in the way of simple
solutions; but when we force a comforting
narrative upon the events in front of us,
we falsify. It is pernicious whether in juries
or activists. We cannot resolve a problem
we fail to see clearly. And we cannot work
with people we are busy demonizing.
We do not undercut justice but advance
it when we recognize that some police use
techniques that minimize deadly shoot-
ings, or when we recognize that some
members of privileged groups have long
worked for justice for those marginalized
by race or gender. We have to look for the
people behind the categories. As Fred Rog-
ers put it, we have to look for the helpers.
Like you, I am not generic. I am a par-
ticular person who has made a particular
journey. I will not be pigeonholed. Please
extend to me the same honest gaze that
you demand for yourself.
President Obama last week pointed to
foundational values in criticizing the Sen-
ate healthcare bill: [T]his debate has al-
ways been about something bigger than
politics. Its about the character of our
country who we are, and who we as-
pire to be.
Whether we are addressing problems
in policing or healthcare or corporate and
environmental abuses, we must appeal
to shared valuesthe same values that
inspired generations of African Ameri-
cans to pass down the artifacts now on
display at the National Museum of African
American History and Culture. Those are
sacred objects preserved in a heroic mass
struggle against erasure. As then, so now.
Our actions must honor the predecessors
who bequeathed us freedom.
Special Agent Crystal Griner, a married
black lesbian, was one of the Capitol Police
ocers who saved Rep. Steve Scalise and
other Republican Congress members and
staers on June 14 by taking down shooter
James Hodgkinson. Will Scalise be moved
to re-examine his racist and homophobic
past? Will his supporters use this teach-
able moment to learn and grow?
Reach across the chasm of dierence
and look your neighbor in the eye. The
ame of recognition may not bridge the
gap, but it never will without eort. Our
republic is at stake. We must take the leap.

Muriel Bowser had to be pleased with
the results of the early Washington Post
mayoral poll showing her with a 67 per-
cent overall approval rating. It shows, In a
hypothetical three-way Democratic may-
oral primary, Bowser captures 50percent
support among registered Democratic
voters, trailed by former mayor and cur-
rent D.C. Council member Vincent C. Gray
(D-Ward 7) with 27percent and Attorney
General Karl Racine (D) with 10percent.
Racine has not shown any great pub-
lic interest in running for mayor. If we are
fortunate he will run for re-election as at-
radar screen? Because, even in this age
of Instagram and seles, few things are
more powerful than language. No matter
how we identify by gender or sexually, we
desire the pronouns and terms used to
describe us to reect our true identies.
Even as toddlers, we know: theres power
in pronouns.
As a writer, like most wordsmiths, I want to
use language that most accurately and clearly
reects the people who I write about, especial-
ly the LGBTQ community. This is an interesting
challenge. Language evolves every nano-sec,
and theres often disagreement within a com-
munity about what language should be used.
Recently, the Associated Press addressed the
evolving language around LGBTQ people and
gender. On May 31, AP released its 2017 Style-
book. The new Stylebook contains changes
on the language used around gender, LGBTQ
people and they, as a singular, gender-neu-
tral pronoun.
Things are changing. Yet for far too
long, much of the mainstream media,
and even some of the gay press, have
used misleading and demeaning terms
to identify transgender and gender non-
conforming people. Some of this is due to
torney general. His ability and inuence
have made him a force in the National As-
sociation of Attorneys General where he
now serves on numerous committees. He
recouped millions of dollars for the people
of the District and is ghting for consumer
rights and aordable housing. He was one
of the people most often named to have a
leadership role in the Department of Justice
had Hillary Clinton won the presidency.
The person who might rethink any
plans he may have to run for mayor after
seeing this poll is Vince Gray. He has total
name recognition in the District and most
people have already set in stone, for bet-
ter or worse, how they see him.
I supported Gray in the 2014 primary.
He was a really good mayor and deserved
a second term. He got a raw deal from the
U.S. Attorney. But reality in politics sug-
gests one cant turn back the clock. When
he lost the primary to Bowser many of his
supporters including me whole-heartedly
supported her. I knew her since she rst
ran for Council and was more than willing
to give her a chance as mayor.
Politicians often dont stay the same
when they win higher oce, especially
when moving from a legislative role to an
executive one. They either fail or rise to the
occasion. Bowser has certainly risen to the
confusion. As a cisgender lesbian scribe,
it took me eons to get that gender and
sexuality arent the same: to understand
that, as You Tuber Brendan Jordan, who
identies as gender uid told CBS News,
Sexuality is who you go to bed with, and
gender identity is who you go to bed as.
The new AP Stylebook explains the mean-
ing of cisgender, transgender and intersex,
and clearly states that sex and gender are
dierent. Not all people fall under one of
two categories for sex or gender, according
to leading medical organizations, the Style-
book says, so avoid references to both, ei-
ther or opposite sexes or genders as a way to
encompass all people.
For a while, folks in our community
have referred to themselves as not only
LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-
gender), but LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisex-
ual, transgender and questioning/and/ author of the fascinating book Word by
or queer). APs new Stylebook says that
LGBT and LGBTQ are acceptable. It adds
that LGBTQIA and other variations are
permitted if used in quotes or as names
as organizations. I generally stands for
intersex, the entry says. A can stand for
ally, asexual or both, it says.
occasion. An approval rating of 67 percent
at this stage of her rst term shows a vast
majority of people in the District agree.
The two issues that can crater a mayor are
whether they improve education and reduce
crime. In both areas the mayors approval
ratings are above 50 percent. Because of our
unusual status another area is how the Dis-
trict deals with the federal government. Here
she is above 50 percent in approval as well.
The areas in which she is well under 50
percent are maintaining aordable hous-
ing, addressing homelessness and curb-
ing larger political donations, or the inu-
ence of big money in politics. But those
are much harder for an opponent to run
on. Especially so for Gray whose record as
former mayor on those issues is no bet-
ter, and some would say worse. These is-
sues have shown to be rather intractable
but Bowser still has time to make a dent
in them.
Many people initially thought Bowser
would mimic Adrian Fenty in her approach
to being mayor. Fenty had a hands-o at-
titude and kept a very skimpy calendar of
public events. He rarely participated in
weekend events and was seen by many
as isolated from his constituency. Surpris-
ing, since as Council member from Ward
4 he was everywhere and ran a door-to-

quently dicult. The new AP Stylebook
entry on they as a singular pronoun
brings this home. I learned in third grade
that they refers to more than one, not a
single, person, a 69-year-old friend told
me, I love what I learned! But I guess itll
have to change.
Many of us know people who dont want
to be referred to as he or she, him or her.
They want to be identied by a gender-neu-
tral pronoun. The AP Stylebook is catching
up with this reality. It says using they as a
gender neutral, singular pronoun is accept-
able if its essential. It doesnt permit the use
of ze or other gender neutral pronouns.
The singular they [has] been in consis-
tent use since the 1300s and the language
hasnt fallen apart yet, Kory Stamper, an
associate editor at Merriam-Webster and
Word, emailed the Blade.
Language is so personal to us, Stamper
said, its the primary way that we com-
municate who we are and what is impor-
tant to us.
Kudos to the AP for helping us communi-
cate who we are and whats important to us.

contrary to what some anticipated, Bows-
er has been a 24/7 mayor with a focus on
all eight wards. She has a seven-day-a-
week schedule most would nd hard to
keep up with. She is out in the commu-
nity from morning to night and has held
budget meetings and planning meetings
in every Ward and has her cabinet out in
the community as well.
She has been generally successful in
her cabinet choices. When replacing Gray
holdovers she has chosen well. Her choic-
es at three crucial agencies, Fire/EMS,
MPD and DCPS, are all activist cabinet
members, out in the community, gaining
respect across racial and socio-economic
lines. That alone will make it dicult to
run against her. She also has a top-notch
chief of sta who understands the District
and gives her wise counsel both from an
administrative and political point of view.
While the primary is still a year away
leaving time for major mistakes or out-
side issues to impact the race, it seems
unlikely judging by the success of her
rst two and a half years. One additional
benet to a calm D.C. mayoral election
is Democratic activists in the District will
have more time and money to help elect
Democrats in Virginia and Maryland.

In Florida, one of the greatest LGBT candidates ever

Recently, the president and I were in
Miami. He went to Little Havana to an-
nounce his rollback of the Obama admin-
istrations Cuba policy. I went to the an-
nual Champions of Equality fundraising
gala for SAVE, South Floridas oldest and
largest LGBT advocacy and political orga-
nization.
I attended this years event because my
friend, David Richardson, the rst openly
LGBT member elected to the Florida Leg-
islature, intends to run for Floridas 27th
congressional district. SAVEs leadership
recruited David to run for the Florida
House ve years ago. They trained him
to be an eective candidate. They raised
money to nance his election. They turned
out an army of volunteers to make sure he
won. And now they have the opportunity
to help lift him into the U.S. Congress.
Whenever theres a serious, credible
LGBT candidate who can make it from the
state level to the federal level, its more
than a local matter. Laws passed in the
U.S. Congress aect every single LGBT
person in this country, and Floridas 27th
congressional district is especially signi-
cant. The Republican vacating the seat,
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, has been a strong
ally on LGBT issues. Flipping the seat to a
Democrat is vital under all considerations,
but when theres a real opportunity to
elect a Democrat who would be the rst
openly LGBT member of Congress from
the Old Confederacy (and to do it in the
Age of Trump!), then we have to seize it.
David is one of the best politicians I know.
In Floridas Republican-controlled legisla-
ture, he was able to nally remove from
statute the 40-year legal ban on adoptions
by LGBT people after it was overturned
by the courts, making sure the legislature
conrmed the actions of the judiciary.
As a freshman legislator, he secured the
rst-ever budget appropriation specically
earmarked for support of the LGBT com-
munity. He led and got the Florida House
to pass its rst pro-LGBT bill out of commit-
tee, an act that motivated the Department
of Health to allow the names of same-sex
second parents on their childrens birth
certicates. He twice thwarted Floridas ver-
sion of an anti-trans bathroom bill that was
being peddled by a Republican colleague
from Miami who ultimately resigned when
his bigotry was exposed. And before Flori-
das governor, Rick Scott, visited Orlando in
the wake of the Pulse massacre, it was Da-
vid he called upon to introduce him to the
local community and to help him under-
stand the massacres devastating impact
on LGBT people.
Supporting Floridas LGBT community
in Tallahassee isnt the only politically dif-
cult task David has assumed as a legis-
lator. Hes right now taking the lead on
reforming the states prison system. Hes
been oered neither the support of a
blue ribbon commission nor any spe-
cial appropriation, so hes undertaking
the work under provisions of Florida law
that allow legislators to show up for un-
announced inspections. His eorts have
uncovered deliberately deferred mainte-
nance, ocer-on-inmate abuses, denial
of medical services, exaggerations of the
savings used to justify privatization, and a
total lack of oversight of Floridas private
prison industrial complex.
David Richardsons level of commit-
ment to the conduct of the peoples busi-
ness is something I want to see from an
elected ocial (but usually dont). I want
every politician to be as resourceful in
pursuing public accountability as he is,
and I can only imagine the impact he
will have as a congressman who applies
the same approach to federal education
spending or the care of soldiers by the
Veterans Administration.
I know I should be focused on electing
Marylands rst openly LGBT governor. I
should concentrate on Maryland candi-
dates who will go to Annapolis and nish
the work for the states trans community.
I should recruit a candidate who will end
HIV criminalization and who will deliver for
our LGBT youth. And Id certainly be all over
that if there were still an Equality Maryland
that could do for us what SAVE has done for
Florida by getting David elected.
But the 2018 mid-term congressional
elections are too important, and I want
to dedicate my energy to the place where
it can accomplish the most good for the
LGBT community. Ive already worked too
many cycles where merely passable can-
didates came just a smidge shy of a win.
This time, Im not going to risk the elec-
tion of one of the greatest LGBT candi-
dates Ive ever met.
The morning after the Champions of
Equality gala, I read a report in the Miami
Herald that said the president was head-
ing back to Maryland for Camp David.
Funny, I thought. Me too.

Former 10,000 Maniacs front woman curates solo career with new box set

Natalie Merchant, a 90s radio mainstay
and former lead singer of 10,000 Maniacs,
is sort of bookending, as she puts it, her
solo material with the release of a new
box set.
Out July 14 (postponed from a planned
June release), The Natalie Merchant
Collection is a deluxe, 10-CD box set that
features her eight solo albums, a new
studio disc called Buttery that features
four new songs and six catalogue tracks
re-recorded with a string quartet, as well
as a full disc of rarities and outtakes.
Merchant brings her summer tour to
Wolf Trap on Thursday, July 6. She spoke
to the Blade by phone last week from her
home in upstate New York.
WASHINGTON BLADE: Why did you feel
now was the right time for such a lavish
box set?
NATALIE MERCHANT: It was a
combination of factors. I feel that were
denitely in the twilight moments of
recorded music in the physical realm. As
much as people talk about the resurgence
of an interest in vinyl, I think thats a small
cult. So I felt like if I didnt do it soon, there
might not be an audience for it. Ive also
been steadily making records since the late
90s that have been a bit under the radar
and I thought this would be an opportunity
to combine all the work in one place for
people who might have been familiar with
what I was doing 20 years ago to see what
Im doing today.
BLADE: Was it hard to nd a deal for it?
MERCHANT: Actually the suggestion
came from Nonesuch a couple years ago
because Nonesuch is owned by the same
parent company as (her former label
home) Elektra, so this idea of consolidating
the whole catalogue under one roof was
suggested and I thought that was a great
idea. Elektra kind of folded for several years
and I did feel like a lot of the records had
gone out of print. Even my independent
release, The House Carpenters Daughter,
copies of it sell for like $50 online, which
seemed silly to me because its really not
worth that (laughs). It just felt like there were
so many dierent factors. And also, when I
did Paradise is Here, (a 2015 re-recording
of breakthrough album Tigerlily), I went
through all my archives, all the music, all the
video, all the photography, so I had all these
assets and Id recently sort of curated them
all, so this gave me an opportunity to put the
book together. I just got it in the mail today.
BLADE: Oh wow, how does it feel to
have it in your hands?
MERCHANT: Its heavy! It feels very
substantial. Thats my rst impression. And
my second impression is that its really so
dierent from looking at a group of virtual
les on a computer screen to have this whole
thing in your hand and this 100-page book. It
feels like a substantial amount of work that
I think can get really distorted when youre
looking at it digitally. It feels great.
BLADE: Did you have all this stu
yourself or did you have to round it up
from various sources?
MERCHANT: It was interesting. One thing
people might notice when they get the box
set, is that its a dierent cover for (second
solo album) Ophelia because the original
photo was lost. Even Warner Bros. didnt
have it in their archives. I event went back
to the original photographer, I went back
to the original art director. I was the only
person who had a lot of these assets. Also,
I dont want to sound morbid, but some
day Ill be dead and I wanted to make sure
the material was presented in a way that I
wanted it to be presented. I found it kind
of shocking that theyd lost my art work but

of visual anachronisms

David Ives deliciously clever comedy
The School for Lies now playing at
Shakespeare Theatre Company takes
place in 1666 Paris with antics conned to
the fantastical drawing room of popular
young society widow Celimene coolly
assayed by Victoria Frings.
Its the time of Louis XIV but era does
not dictate style here: Theres a Dali Mae
West Lips sofa, an attenuated super-
tall tallboy, a Je Koons dog hangs in a
cage from the ceiling and the walls are
papered in outsized cabbage roses.
Other astonishing xtures include three
fabulously period-costumed (mostly) fops
on hand vying for the ladys hand.
But the showiest aspect of all is hands
down Ives writing. A translaptation
(translation + adaptation) of Molires
17th-century classic Les Misanthrope,
The School for Lies is penned in elegant
yet funny nonstop rhyming couplets. Ives
brings the old and the new together, slyly
reinvigorating a revered work with lots of
new laughs and a contemporary twist.
The comedy unfolds fast and funnily
when Frank (stalwart and handsome STC
regular Woodsell), a high born Frenchman
returning from a stay in London, makes
his way into Celimenes salon. Hes at
odds with current French fashion he
dresses dourly and despises all intrigue
and untruths, hence the name Frank. All
other characters retain the names that
Moliere originally gave them.
Frank enjoys barbing with stylish
Celimene and her admirers, particularly
the singularly untalented self-described
bard Oronte (played wonderfully by out
actor Tom Story in a red wig a la Bette
Kennedy Center Theater

Eliante (a terric Dorea Schmidt) livens
things up with tales and bs about secret
passions and inuential position sparking
a romantic interest between Frank and
Celimene. They like each other but for
dierent reasons, initially any way. Gossip
swirls further when Philinate is falsely
accused of cross dressing. The rumor
becomes increasingly believed, so with an
if-you-cant-beat-em,-join-em attitude,
Philinte discovers hes more successful at
eecting desired results while disguised
as a blue-blooded lady.
Also on hand for the fun is Arsino
(the always entertaining Veanne Cox), a
high-strung scold eager to see frenemy
Celimene fail at every turn. Rounding
out the cast with timing and dexterity is
Michael Glenn who plays both Celimenes
graceful-but-put-upon footman
Dubois and Franks considerably more
unpolished valet Basque.
Its all impeccably staged by STCs
Artistic Director Michael Kahn and
realized by a top-notch design team
including Alexander Dodge (set), Murrell
Horton (costumes), Mark McCullough
(lighting) and Christopher Baine (sound).
At about 90 minutes, The School for Lies
moves snappily. Any more might be too
much. This is Kahns fourth collaboration
with Ives. Past translaptions include
The Liar, The Heir Apparent and The
Metromaniacs.
Franks candor is refreshing. Its nice
to have a man stand center stage who
speaks only the truth. The School for
Lies is timely and Ives makes comedy
hay with our current political situation.
Whats more, theres an 11th-hour treat:
Ives both wraps up the show and handles
mistaken identity, that staple of classic
comedy, hilariously.

Planned long before his untimely 2016 death, the Prince classic PURPLE RAIN was nally released
last week in a deluxe, expanded edition.
Here comes the Rain
1984 Prince outtakes are
mind-blowing yet awed

Of course it sucks beyond
comprehension that Prince is dead, but if
theres any silver lining to that colossally
mammoth black cloud, its that nally
nally! the long-delayed deluxe
reisssue of Purple Rain, rst announced
in the spring of 2014, is nally here.
So the big question remains: is it
everything fans had hoped? Well
no. Of course, it was never going to
be possible to please everybody. The
album itself remains a masterpiece, a
blistering collection of rock and funk that
represents Prince and his most famous
backing band, the Revolution at their
peak. The album and accompanying
lm dominated the cultural landscape
of 1984, yielding dual chart-toppers in
the brooding masterpiece of minimalist
tension, When Doves Cry, and the
kinetic electro-charged rocker Lets Go
Crazy, known for its jaw-dropping guitar
freak-out nale.
And of course its the title song, a rock
anthem for the ages, that still gets the
tears owing all these years later. Every
track is a classic, from the scalding funk
of Computer Blue, I Would Die 4 U
and Baby Im a Star, the brazenly sexual
Darling Nikki, the perfect pop euphoria
of Take Me With U, to the scorchingly
bitter ballad The Beautiful Ones.
The remaster itself was engineered
by Josh Welton under the supervision of
Prince in 2015, and while it sounds louder
and a bit brighter, its so compressed that
it loses dynamic range. The vinyl pressing,
when compared to the prior 2009 reissue

if only for the remarkable second disc, a
full 80 minutes of previously unreleased
material from the Purple Rain era.
Highlights are the stunning full 12-minute
take on Computer Blue, searing funk
workouts like the 11-minute Dance
Electric, Love and Sex and Possessed,
and the wonderfully salacious We Can
Fuck. The shimmering instrumental
Fathers Song, based around a piano
melody that recurs throughout the lm,
is chill-inducing. There are a couple
throwaways (Velvet Kitty Cat and
Katrinas Paper Dolls) whose inclusion is
questionable given the amount of better
material available and still unreleased,
but by and large the disc is a revelation.
A three-CD/one-DVD set is also
available, but is mostly for completists.
The third disc contains all the albums
single edits, 12 extended mixes and
b-sides (like the essential 17 Days and
Erotic City), and is a nice addition that
oers a more complete picture of the
eras releases. The set also includes the
rst DVD release of a performance from
March 30, 1985 in Syracuse previously
released on VHS and laserdisc as Prince
And The Revolution: Live. The video
is a bit grainy, but the sound is quite
nice. The liner notes include fascinating
commentary by Princes long-time
engineer Susan Rogers and members of
the Revolution commenting on each of
the album tracks.
Though awed and non-
comprehensive, this release is a nice
stop-gap until, hopefully, someday a
more complete and carefully curated set
will see the light of day.

MICHAEL,
Mitch and I have been through a lot
together as a gay, biracial couple. Totally
rejected by our families, weve really been
on our own. Over the past 20 years weve
moved from one coast to the other for my
work and never really built an extended
family. Now its just the two of us against
the world. And yet, Im lonely.
We are completely co-dependent
on each other in this relationship even
though we have very little in common.
Mitch complains about this often. Our
sex life has never been great, but its been
good enough to sustain us. The physical
chemistry isnt there, but the love is.
Mitch doesnt work due to long-term
disability, so he spends all his time
cruising the internet for who knows
what. When I get home from work, he
acknowledges me, but doesnt really
spend any time with me. He does some
basic household stu, but I pay someone
to clean and prepare meals.
Ive tried to build a nice life for us, but
its not enough anymore. I want to be on
my own, despite all the scariness and risk
that comes with it. But what happens to
Mitch? He really cant fend for himself. I do
everything and even though Ive tried to
help him be self-sucient, he doesnt really
seem able. He cant aord to live on his
own and we have nobody to fall back on.
We have lots of moments where it
feels like we could and should just go the
distance. Were in our 50s and I worry
were both a little old to start over. Maybe
I needed to do this 10 or 15 years ago.
Any advice?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
Whenever one person in a relationship
is taking care of the other in ways that the
other person could actually do himself,
both people wind up resenting each
other. So my rst suggestion is that the
two of you discuss how your relationship

I wonder how much Mitch would do
if you werent so dedicated to being his
caretaker. Yes, I know that hes on long-
term disability, but if he is able to spend
his days cruising for who knows what, I
gather he is capable of doing more, both
for himself and for the two of you.
My hunch: your shouldering almost all
of the responsibility is perpetuating your
unhappy relationship. Youre resentful
as hell and hes dependent on someone
who resents his dependency. Hes also
not doing any work on improving his own
life. If you two work to construct a more
equitable, balanced relationship, you
might respect each other (and yourselves)
more. And you might feel closer and enjoy
being together.
You can ask Mitch to be more of a
partner in your relationship, but theres
no guarantee he will do anything dierent
from what hes currently doing. But you
can denitely change your own behavior
and do your part not to act in ways that
dont help your relationship or yourself.
Do you have a history of care taking
others, maybe going way back to when
you were growing up? Knowing why youve
chosen this role at dierent points in your
life may make it easier to step out of it now.
That said, you dont have to stay with
Mitch if you dont want to, even if he is
going to have a hard time on his own.
You could continue to be helpful to
Mitch without being partners. But you
also have a responsibility to the life you
want to have and if youre going to be in
a relationship, you should be in it freely,
not because you feel trapped.
And yet you say that you love each
other and often feel that you should stay
together. What are you both doing at
those times that makes you want to put
forth the eort? You and Mitch should

CAPS all-star spotlight
Softball players nd fun,
love and life on the eld

Stepping up to bat this week in the
ongoing Washington Blade series on
local athletes from the local LGBT sports
community are two players from the
Chesapeake and Potomac Softball League.
The League oers three seasons
and has about 400 players in multiple
divisions for both men and women.
After graduating from Marymount
University in 2009, Heather Walker-Leahy
stayed in the area and began working
at Lace. She started playing in the
Chesapeake and Potomac Softball League
(CAPS) in 2010 in the left eld position.
Growing up in Philadelphia, she played
both softball and basketball through
high school and played basketball for
Marymount until injuries knocked her out
in her junior year.
I hadnt played softball in a long
time and I was immediately drawn to
the incredible CAPS community, says
Walker-Leahy. Its a networking hotbed
and I met my wife playing in the league.
Walker-Leahy plays for the Capital
Cougars and in 2012, she met her future
wife Cassandra who plays for the Honey
Hitters, also in the left eld position. After
marrying in 2015, they continue to play
on opposing teams in the League.
We are both very competitive but we are
able to leave it on the eld and not bring
it home, Walker-Leahy says. We do play
together on the travel team, D.C. Swag.
On that team, they have traveled
together to a tournament in Philadelphia
and the world series in Kansas City. Next
week they will head to the Amateur Sports
Alliance of North Americas world series
with what Walker-Leahy says is their best
travel team yet.
Interested in raising her tness level,
Walker-Leahy began taking Muay Thai
kickboxing classes in 2015 and made her
debut as an amateur ghter in January
of this year. Now training full-time,
this September she will have her rst
professional match as part of Capital MMA.
MMA has allowed me to grow mentally,
get to know myself and compete with
myself, Walker-Leahy says. It makes having
the CAPS team environment with members

of my own community even better.
Gary Stradiotto grew up in Santa Clarita,
Calif., playing little league baseball and
neighborhood sports. He backed o in high
school and focused on education, earning
his undergraduate degree at Indiana
University, his graduate degree from San
Francisco State and his Ph.D from U.C. Davis.
Performing research for his dissertation
brought him to D.C. in 2009 and he
remained in the area after accepting a
job at the American Red Cross. A friend
playing with the CAPS sparked an interest
and he joined the league in 2012.
I realized how much I missed playing
ball and how much fun it is to compete,
Stradiotto says. I also ended up traveling
a few times, playing a tournament in
Philadelphia and in the Sin City Shootout.
First baseman Stradiotto joined a new
team this season, D.C. Heatwave, and on
May 21 as he was thrown out running to rst
base, he dropped to one knee and went into
sudden cardiac death. If not for the quick
actions of his new teammates, one of which
had a debrillator on hand, the outcome
could have been quite dierent.
I have no recollection of anything that
happened that day, Stradiotto says. I am
lucky that my new teammates were there
to treat me until the ambulance arrived.
The diagnosis was two blockages in
two arteries along with failed arrhythmia.
Doctors inserted a stent along with a
heart monitor implant and Stradiotto
remained in a treatment center for three
weeks. Just released this past week,
his prognosis is good but he still has a
lot of physical therapy and cardiologist
appointments ahead of him.
I was going to the gym up to ve
days a week and the doctor says I can
return to that activity along with softball,
Stradiotto says. At this point though, I
still have a lot of trepidation.
After returning home from his lengthy
hospital stay, Stradiotto discovered that
he had been wearing his t belt which
had emailed him his heart-tracking levels
that day through the MYZONE app.
I didnt even know I had been wearing
it and the results told the weirdest story,
Stradiotto says. It spiked to level red and
then it just went blank. I had never even
approached the red level when I worked out.

Rarities disc gave super-deep cuts a new home

luckily Im a bit of a pack rat, so I had many
of the things that were necessary for this
package in my basement including all the
rarities which were in my own les at home.
BLADE: Do you feel a little more
freedom to go deeper with your set
list on your summer tour since youre
essentially touring this box set?
MERCHANT: If you include the 10,000
Maniacs songs, Ive probably written about
250 songs. So yeah, its dicult to put
together a set list of 26 or even 30 songs
that are going to make everyone happy. But
I think its going to be a really interesting set.
Im carrying a string quartet, piano, guitar,
bass and drummer. Its a big band and I
think people will be pleasantly surprised by
the arrangement of the material they know
and to also hear some things they may not
be familiar with.
BLADE: You sang at an anti-Trump rally
earlier this year and have always been
politically active. Why was that event
important to you?
MERCHANT: Its very disturbing whats
happening in our country right now. I believe
that rally was on the eve of the inauguration
and I was in New York near Trump Tower.
It was announced, I think, just two or three
days before and we had 30,000 people there.
That was encouraging and the next day was
the womens march and that was further
conrmation that those of us who really
sensed that the election of this man was
extremely dangerous, you know, to have that
many people show up in Washington the day
after and protest was really encouraging. Im
hoping that we win back the House in 2018 at
the very least. That would be a step forward.
I dont know about impeachment. I dont
know if thats going to happen or how much
things would improve if we have President
Pence. So its frightening, really frightening,
especially when he stepped away from the
Paris accord. We dont have time to mess
around at this point. We have to transition
from being a fossil fuel-based, energy-
consuming country or we will not survive.
Its just really horrifying to think that we now
have a president, whether he thinks global
climate change exists or not, who would
do that. That, to me, is the most important
issue. But theres womens issues, theres
the health care issue, its overwhelming that
theres so many dierent fronts now and that
we have to be ghting on. But I think without
stabilizing the environment, or at least
severely reducing the negative impact were
having on the environment, were all fucked.
BLADE: Tell me more about the
Buttery disc. Of all the new material
you might have recorded, why did you go
with the string quartet approach?
MERCHANT: Since 2008 Ive been doing

orchestral shows and quartet shows almost
exclusively so when it came time to make this
record, I think there are about 40 songs now
that I have string arrangements for. I had the
entire Paradise is There album, celebrating
the 20th anniversary of Tigerlily, so Id
used several of the arrangements on that
record, so this was an opportunity to do that
with some of those other songs in the new
arrangements that had never been recorded.
BLADE: Sometimes long-time fans balk
at these kinds of sets and say, Oh, shes
making us buy all this stu we already
have just to get the new material. Was
that a concern?
MERCHANT: I think the fan that has every
single thing Ive ever released is rare. I think
most people will be kind of grateful, at least
I am when theres an artist Im interested
in, I may not have everything theyve ever
released. I buy a lot of box sets because Ive
missed some of the pieces and I guess Im
kind of the personality whos a completist. I
like to have complete sets. And people will
be able to digitally access the two new (discs)
if they want. Theres also talk of a vinyl
version (of the new material) coming out in
the fall, so thats another opportunity, but I
dont know. Well have to see. I also insisted
it be very reasonably priced. I wanted it to
be $50 or less.
BLADE: Thats certainly fair for a 10-
disc set.
MERCHANT: And I think Amazon will be
selling it for $40-something.
BLADE: Did you have any creative
battles at Elektra or did they pretty much
let you do your thing?
MERCHANT: Well, two interesting things
happened. When I went solo, Bob Krasnow,
whod been the chairman of the company
the entire time Id been on Elektra, I cant of. Leave Your Sleep (2010) was the nal

departed, but he was gone and Sylvia
Rhone came in and I think Sylvia was eager

to prove herself and she really liked the
song, Carnival. Shed been responsible for
breaking a lot of African-American bands
and artists but not a white artist and and I
think that was her challenge and she loved
that song so that was a stroke of luck.
And I heard that Jon Landeau, whod been
executive managing Bruce Springsteen
since the beginning of his career, Bruce was
taking a hiatus so Jon started managing me,
so I had this encouraging situation at the
company and had great management, so I
felt protected and respected. I didnt feel it
was an antagonistic relationship with Elektra
at that point. I think Id proven myself with
three platinum records with 10,000 Maniacs.
BLADE: Did you choose the singles or
the label on your rst few albums?
MERCHANT: I think it was pretty
obvious what the singles were on the rst
record. I dont remember there being any
discussion of that. I think with (third album)
Motherland (2001), I wasnt happy with a
couple of the choices, but the rst couple
albums, it was ne. At that point, I was
30 years old, Id been with the label since
I was 19 and to be honest with you, Id
outlives just about everybody who worked
at the label except the woman who ran
the publicity department. I think we were
the last two standing by the time it folded
(laughs). As people started doing more
and more le sharing, the art department
disappeared, the video department, it felt
like departments were disappearing weekly
until eventually the label just folded.
BLADE: Will you keep making records
or is this set a sort of a bookend for you?
MERCHANT: Its a little bit of a bookend
because Ill never be able to make records
the way I did before. That leisurely two
months in the studio, thats just unheard

project that I did on that scale and it took a
full year to make that record. I employed, I
think, 135 dierent musicians and it was

folly in a way, but it was a beautiful folly. I still
havent recouped and that was seven years
ago (laughs). I felt like Orson Welles making
Citizen Kane or David Lean making Bridge
On the River Kwai. It felt like I had to make
it even though it made absolutely no sense
nancially. But I learned so much from it and
it still sold a quarter of a million copies which
is still kind of unheard of in todays market.
BLADE: You wouldnt be happy doing
something on a smaller scale? I saw
Sheryl Crow last night and she has this
great new album out that she made in
her home studio while her kids were at
school and its this really fun little album.
You wouldnt want to do something like
that?
MERCHANT: I have two projects Id like to
do. One is to make an online database of folk
music for children, performed by children.
The other is a childrens theater company.
I feel compulsive about creativity and there
are so many dierent aspects to it. Id love
to do costume design, I would love to hire
a choreographer and do some dance, or
maybe research folk tales from other lands
and other music. There are so many other
things I want to do with music that dont
involve going into a studio, recording a pop
record and going on tour. It used to be that
years ago youd get to a certain point in your
career and then youd start producing other
artists. I think I would have done that more if
the industry hadnt collapsed.
BLADE: Did you have a lot of stu to
pull from for the rarities disc? Did you
ever toy with the idea of doing a two- or
three-disc set of all rarities?
MERCHANT: Well, for the rarities I wanted
to put out music of high quality. I didnt
want it to just be all home demos and bad
outtakes. It really is a combination of little-
known tracks, like the collaboration I did with
David Byrne for Here Lies Love or the track
I did with the Chieftains, which I really loved
going to Ireland and recording with them,
that were really special moments in my
career. And there was other unknown stu
that Id been holding on to like The Village
Green and Too Long at the Fair that were
all recorded by great musicians in world-class
studios under dierent circumstances. I did a
session back in 2008 when I was looking for
a label to put out Leave Your Sleep and I
recorded a group of demos and we recorded
some covers that were lovely covers, they just
never belonged on a record.
