25% Labs: The laboratory experience will incorporate some traditional teacher-directed models, as well as emphasis on student-

directed experimentation and inquiry. Students will identify questions they want to answer, design experiments to test hypotheses,
conduct investigations, analyze data, and communicate their results. This is to enable students to concentrate on understanding
concepts and developing reasoning skills essential to the practices used in the study of biology. Student-directed, inquiry-based labs
will provide opportunities to design plans for experiments, data collection, application of mathematical routines, and refinement of
testable explanations and predictions. Lab experiences will focus on quantitative skills.

TUTORIALS
Please schedule tutorial times in advance as needed. Though we have set aside time blocks for tutorials, advanced notice is greatly
appreciated even during these blocks. We are available to clarify information covered in class and assist with misunderstandings. We
will not be available to complete homework assignments or repeat class lectures. Come prepared with all materials and specific
questions or problems to be answered. A level of advanced preparation is required for tutorials to be effective. When in doubt,
ask questions IN CLASS thats why were here.

Tuesday during 7th period in B-225 (Drake)
Monday and Wednesday after school (4:20) in B-222 (Roop-Morland)
Daily during A lunch in B-204 by appointment (Kirpach)

Any test, quiz, or assignment that is handed in under your name alone is to be your work alone. Since most lab work is done in
groups, you may consult with your group members regarding the analysis and discussion of the lab. The written lab report, for
which you alone are graded, should not be copied, either from another persons work or from oral dictation. IT IS ILLEGAL, AND IT
WILL BE CONSIDERED CHEATING, TO VIEW AND OR SHARE ELECTRONIC OR PAPER COPIES OF TEST BANKS OR TEST ITEMS.
ENGAGING IN THIS PRACTICE WILL RESULT IN THE MAXIMUM PENALTY. It is considered cheating to use old lab books, old tests,
or other written work from students who have taken this course (or any other biology course) in the past to prepare an
assignment for a grade. Cheating on any work will result in a nonnegotiable zero for that work. That zero may not be made up or
cancelled out with extra or alternative work.

ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY


The use of electronic devices is prohibited in the classroom unless expressly approved by the instructor and when
instructionally appropriate (examples of appropriate use may include use as a search tool, timer, or calculator)
(inappropriate use includes texting, emails, taking unauthorized photos, games, and much more).
Photos and/or videos may NOT be taken without prior approval.
Students that violate this rule will have their cell phone collected by the teacher. Repeat offenders will have their cell
phones taken to Sub School where they can only be picked up at the end of the day.
Cell Phones are NOT permitted at all before, during, or after quizzes and tests (including trips to the restroom, office or
any other location during the testing period). Violation of this rule will result in a 0 for that quiz or test.
