Discipline your Brain Or It will Work Against You

Remember that last time when you felt like regretting to something? Be it that you said something
to someone and then immediately or later realized your words were just inappropriate, and you get
to understand that your stance would possible cost your image and reputation? Yes, your words can
cost you a promotion or a business deal. We see all these things within our families. How many
times you heatedly responded grossly your spouse and then regret immediately or later? Some
humble people then try to apologize themselves, but then in a sudden after some days or hours they
again find themselves embarrassed by their own words again. What if it was you? Would you
apologize again, right? Or you just feel your credibility is already eroded and you just avoid
ridiculously apologizing again? At work maybe you have the same scenarios where you cross people
or take costly decisions often. When you take some time to reflect on your attitudes, you just get
disappointed. You go what a hack is going on with me? Some people start to think of an evil acting
on them. Hey, they might be right! What they might not understand is that its them who incubated
the evil which is sabotaging their life. Terrible! The by you incubated evil cost you that opportunity
or maybe that relationship. No, I cant incubate an evil you might think. After reading the following
3 points you will be clear and know how to safeguard yourself should you be committed to.

Its your Behaviors That Determine Your Life

Brian Tracy on his article 7 Great Habits of the Most Successful People states that 95% of our
behavior is driven by habits. Quite surprising, isnt it? We think we are thinking the things and now
we come to know that it just contributes with only 5% to our behavior! What about if you stop
thinking and commit to building successful habits? Sounds crazy, right?

The scope of this article is not to deep explain how our brains work. However, at this point you just
have to get aware that our Mind (which is the brain activity), works like Google kind of Search
engine. Yes, just like a search engine! You just type one word on Google and it will bring tons of
results related to that word or it will bring few or nothing at all. Well, if a word brings tons of results,
it means that the word is kind of hot one which means that is used in most stories or articles that
exist in internet. If figures in just few stories, it will bring few results. And if not used at all it will
return nothing. Another important thing is that the most searched stories which contain our
searched word will pop on top of the results' list, while the least searched will be far down on the
results list. Now, where is the information we get come from? The answer is: people generate it
every day from Facebook comments to Scientific Articles. Some people are aware of their deliberate
publishing of information to the world, others maybe not quite clear of that. When we search we
just get information available in the web, nothing else. So our brains work.

When your brain receives an input (say see a specific type of fish), basically it becomes a search key
word into your mind. Interestingly the returned results are consistently different within different
peoples minds. If you know and like that specific type of fish, your mouth will start to saliva out.
What about for someone allergic to fish? Certainly he would be horrified and remember of that last
time he had that bad experience with fish, right? What about for another person who hadnt seen
that type of fish before? Maybe he would just ignore it. See, the same fish cause different
perceptions and feelings on different people! Whats going on here? The answer is simple as that all
depends on information or experiences each individual has in his mind (a.k.a. brain wiring). Where is
that information coming from? You upload it daily! From your social interactions, family, TV, movies,
novels, gossiping, schools, the kind of books you read and including what you are reading in this
article. The whole of information stored into your brain is what will become your thinking platform.
Your brain just stores every information you captured with your sensors (eye sight, ear sight, smell,
taste and touch), including that you didnt attend to, and when a search is done, it will deliver
whatever exists into your mind from immoral movies to decent education. For instance, if you like
watching movies' scenes where wronged people (movie subject) revenge against the offender, you
are also likely to do so if subject to similar situations your brain will simple unconsciously
command you to do that, and maybe later you will regret the fact!

Its not what things are, Your Brain Give Them the Meaning

By now you should have a better knowledge about our brains work and you might be alarmed how
your brain unconsciously dictates your behavior which ultimately determines the results you have in
life. For strengthening the this stance its worth bringing hear the Dichotic Listening Task study by
Anne Treisman which brings about the evidence that even information we think we are ignoring we
are actually processing and becomes part of our reasoning base. The experiment by Treisman
basically consisted on having participants wearing dual channels headphones (left ear channel and
right ear channel), and were instructed to listen and repeat what they hear in their right ear and
ignore what came to their left ear. In the attended ear (right one) came a message I saw a girl/Song
was whishing and simultaneously in the unattended ear (left) came a message which said me that
bird/Jumping on the street. Hey, to the surprise of Treisman, the participants consistently repeated
the following message I saw a girl jumping on the street. What happened here? Even though
participants were just attending only to one ear, they were also actively and unnoticeably processing
the information which went to the unattended ear. This study substantiated that the mind basically
goes on autocompleting the meanings according to their logical sense, not the real what is brought
by inputs. It seems to explain why we tend to automatically complete other peoples sentences just
as we were precisely reading their thoughts, sounds familiar? In the case of the experiment the
participants auto completed the sentence by making use of information which supposedly were not
perceiving. In fact that information was being recorded into memories of participants and eventually
they made use of it unconsciously. We think we are thinking but we are basically having our
experiences memories in our brain auto complete our reasoning or give the meaning of things. With
this we can visualize the thinking processed as a harmonized thorough coordination of actual inputs
(stimuli) and information we have memorized into our brains which results on our prevailing
reasoning. Now, what account for the input and information which is processed? Input is everything
being captured by our sensors on the time we are thinking be what we are attending or not. And w
information retrieved from memory during thinking process is everything from Junky TV and movies
stuff to sound expertise knowledge. Yes, everything comes in. When we are thinking, all the input
and memorized information will arrange itself like into two key conflicting categories, lets call them
positive and negative. The final result of your reasoning will be determined by what category will
win. If you exposed yourself to kind of people revenging stories, most probably if you are under
similar triggers, the negative tier will win the battle and leads choose revenging act as most
appropriate even though it will be costly later.

Simple Do This To Discipline Your Brain?

All you need to do is to feed your brain by stories that are consistent with the person you would like
to be. Unfortunately our brains just absorb anything including those we simply just hate, and that
stuff is badly confusing our thinking. The rule of thumb for ensuring your brain is packed with right
information which will transform you into a wiser thinker is just requires to be selective on the diet
of information you consume. Yes you need the right diet just like you need it for your physical
health. Because in the environment we leave in there this all kind of negative and positive kinds of
information, you need to be certain that you expose yourself to enough positive stuff capable to
consistently winning the negative stuff. Its where your brain start to work for you. Most importantly
is sustainability. You need to supervise your brain on what it attracts you to. Most people get
attracted by kind of violence news. Their brain just cant resist to that. However, by exposing
themselves to those scenes they end up building traumas. You have to be aware of what your
behaviors ensuring that you stay consistent with the future happy and successful you want to be.

Putting it together

You have to define what you want to be and make a list of behaviors consistent with your objective.
Bombard yourself with relevant experiences and memories while avoid at all cost whatever is just
attractive but potential to bring you trauma or hold you back when a critical life step is required. The
more positive stuff you feed into your brain, the more the negativity will lose space. Consistence is
important. You need to supervise your behaviors and habits ensuring you stay on track towards your
intended future big you.
