Gay-organized Trump rally draws just 18 attendees
Make America Great
Again event held
near White House

A total of just 18 people turned out
on Saturday, June 1, for a Make America
Great Again Free Speech Rally on the
Ellipse section of the National Mall near
the White House that was organized by
Gays for Trump President Peter Boykin.
Boykin and several others who
spoke at the rally said they were certain
that each of those attending the event
represents thousands of others, both gay
and straight, who are conservative, loyal
Americans that deeply believe Donald
Trump will provide the leadership needed
to get the nation back on track.
Make American Great Again is not
just a political slogan, Boykin told the
gathering. Its an American one which
has been shared by many great people
in this nation no matter what their race,
gender or sexual orientation.
Boykin and others who helped organize
the event promoted it as a nonpartisan
rally for free speech but made it known
that most of those expected to speak
would be Trump supporters, although
others would be welcome to speak. As it
turned out, only Trump supporters spoke
at the event.
Ronald Reagan rst coined the phrase
Make America Great Again during his
1980 campaign for president, Boykin
pointed out. He noted that Bill Clinton
also used the Make American Great Again
slogan in his 1992 presidential campaign.
It makes me proud when I hear those
words and to live by that code and to
not only attempt to MAGA for me but to
MAGA for everyone, Boykin said. For if
we truly Make America Great Again then
we can bless the world in MAGA, which is
to make the earth great again.
With temperatures soaring into the
upper 90s, Boykin and some helpers set
up a small stage with four loud speakers
in front of a small tent decorated
with American ags and two rainbow
ags. With the White House and the
national Christmas tree as a backdrop,
the rally took place on a mostly empty
Ellipse, which is large oval eld with grass
but no trees.
Boykin and at least one other speaker
gave several reasons for the small turnout.
Its not that people didnt want to
come out, Boykin said. A lot of people
said they would love to but they just
couldnt aord it. Its the Fourth of July
weekend and a lot of people also spend
time with their families, he said.
Just 18 people turned out for a weekend pro-Trump event.
He also speculated that Washington,
D.C. has become a place where a lot
of people dont want to spend time,
partially because there is a lot of
bickering, a lot of in-ghting going on, not
only the Democrats, the liberals, but
also among the Republicans.
Don Lime, who identied himself as a
radio talk show host from Monterey Bay,
Calif., who recently moved to D.C., said
he believes the low turnout was due, in
part, because conservative activists he
being among them are pleased with
the job Trump is doing as president.
Ill shoot you straight. We dont have
a lot of people here. But Ill tell you
why, he told the gathering from the
stage. Its because when youre ahead
and when youre winning you can stop
everything. You just quit ghting because
youre winning every day. Every day has
just been a win here, a win there, a win
everywhere, he said in referring to
Trumps accomplishments so far.
Lime, who is black, said he has been
criticized since moving to D.C. by the
political establishment who he said
sometimes cant comprehend why a black
person could support Trump.
I decided to become a conservative
once I found out the truth that the media
was tricking us and the Democrats had
control for 30 to 40 years, he said. As
a black person I realized I was being
hoodwinked. What I mean is they thought
that welfare is a good thing absolutely
not, he said.
They wanted black people sometimes,
not all, but a lot of black people, they just
want us to sit around and get benets
and give them votes, he told the rally. So
I decided to give them a vote. I gave them
a vote for Trump, a great leader.
Lisa Christiansen, whose resume
describes her as a motivational speaker,
writer, author, and creator of two charitable
foundations, delivered a 50-minute keynote
speech at the rally describing, among other
things, how she came to believe Donald

She said she was so impressed with
Trump as a businessman at the time of
her meeting with him that when she
learned six years later than he planned
to run for president she immediately
understood he would be best suited to

who called it a true blessing that Trump
has become president. Cummins criticized
Democrats for calling on the U.S. to

Cumberland to hold its rst Pride
Less than a decade ago, Baltimore was the only venue in Maryland to hold
Pride celebrations. Since then, Frederick and Hagerstown have joined the party,
and Howard County could be right around the corner.
The western Maryland city of Cumberland with a population of just over
20,000 is the latest jurisdiction to celebrate LGBT Pride. It began July 6 and will
culminate with a festival on July 9.
For many LGBTQ people living in rural areas, its still 1993, says Jeremy
Gosnell, one of the organizers. Rural America has been slow to adopt policies
that embrace the LGBTQ community and while gay marriage is legal nationwide,
various states have enacted laws and ordinances that allow for discrimination.
Perhaps a business doesnt have to entertain a gay persons request, or a venue
can openly denounce and restrict gay weddings. While America has come far in
its acceptance of homosexuality, there is still a long way to go.
The festivities kicked o with a memorial on July 6 outside the Cumberland
Theatre honoring those members of the LGBT community who lost their lives
at the Pulse nightclub massacre, the Chechen Republic, and others who have
experienced violence as a result of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The Dress Your Best event on July 7 will feature jazz music, dinner and a silent
benet auction at Dantes in Frostburg. Frostburg State University students are
encouraged to attend. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m.
On July 8 there will be a One Love paint party from 12-2 p.m. hosted by
MountainShine Creative at the Liberty Stage.
Boots and Ballcaps, hosted by Jam Sauce collective, is a family-friendly event
with live music and a crafts for kids from 2-8 p.m. The night is capped o with a
pop-up dance club at Mezzos in Cumberland from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. for those
aged 21 and older.
The four-day celebration is capped o by Sundays Pride Festival on Baltimore
Street in downtown Cumberland on July 9 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Its a family-

Study reveals LGBT rental housing discrimination
Findings show gay men,
trans people face bias

A newly released study by the D.C.-
based Urban Institute found that
some landlords that were subjected
to discrimination testing in the D.C.
metropolitan area showed a bias
against renting apartments to applicants
who self-identied as transgender
compared to applicants not identifying
as transgender.
The study also conducted several
hundred discrimination tests in the Los
Angeles and Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas,
areas in which testers posed as members
of gay male, lesbian, and heterosexual
couples. The ndings from this part of the
study show that some landlords displayed
a bias against gay male applicants but
appeared to treat lesbians and straight
women the same.
The studys lead author, Urban
Institute researcher Diane K. Levy, told
the Washington Blade that in the D.C.
tests, 100 of the testers identied as
transgender and 99 did not say anything
about their gender identity and were
presumed to be cisgender.

Commissioner Kent C. Boese announced
on July 1 that he is running for the Ward
1 D.C. Council seat held by incumbent
Council member Brianne Nadeau in the
citys 2018 Democratic primary.
Boese, 52, a law librarian, has served
as chair of ANC 1A for the past four years
and as its secretary for the previous
three years. ANC 1A represents the
neighborhoods of Columbia Heights,
Park View, and Pleasant Plains, which
are home to many of the citys Latino
immigrants and LGBT people among
other constituency groups.
Boeses announcement came two
weeks after former D.C. Superior Court
Magistrate Judge Lori E. Parker declared
her candidacy for the Ward 1 Council seat.
In his announcement statement
Boese said his experience on the ANC
plan the people identifying as
transgender applicants for renting an
apartment disclosed their gender identity
by telling the landlord or rental agent that
the name they would be using for the
application was dierent from their birth
name because they were transgender
and had yet to legally change their name.
The study reveals that in one out of
every 5.6 test visits to a rental oce,
the rental agents or landlords oered
to show a self-identied transgender
applicant one fewer apartment than was
shown to non-transgender applicants.
As part of the study, the testers
identifying as trans and non-trans
applicants said they were single with
no children and had the same nancial
qualications to rent an apartment.
The studys ndings are presented in a
297-page report called A Paired-Testing
Pilot Study of Housing Discrimination
against Same-Sex Couples and
Transgender Individuals.
The report says the study arranged
for 1,200 in-person tests split evenly
between women and men posing as part
of a same-sex couple in the Los Angeles
and Dallas-Fort Worth areas where they
showed up at a rental oce to inquire
about nding an apartment.

about one fewer available rental unit for
every 4.2 tests than they told heterosexual

of the late Jim Graham, the gay former
Ward 1 Council member who lost his race
for a fth term in oce to Nadeau in 2014
after serving 16 years on the Council.

strong record on constituent services
and advocacy for progressive legislation
was overshadowed in 2014 by allegations

the allegations, saying he was merely
engaging in political horse trading for
the best possible development project
for the ward.
But Nadeau, who expressed strong
support for LGBT rights, aggressively raised
the ethics issue hanging over Grahams
head, persuading a solid majority of Ward
1 voters to side with her over Graham.
Graham died last month from
complications associated with an
intestinal infection. He was 71.
Although Boese and his supporters
point out that Boese is knowledgeable on
a wide range of issues facing Ward 1 and
the city, he would become the Councils
only openly gay member if he were to win
the primary and the general election next
year for the Ward 1 seat.
Grahams loss to Nadeau came in the
same year that gay D.C. Council member
David Catania (I-At-Large) gave up his
Council seat in an unsuccessful race for
mayor in 2014.

Polis could make history with Colorado gubernatorial bid

If Jared Polis wins the race for governor
of Colorado, he would become the rst
openly gay person to win a gubernatorial
race in the United States but breaking
through the pink ceiling isnt a distinction
thats a priority for his campaign.
During an interview with the
Washington Blade last week, the ve-
term member of the U.S. House identied
renewable energy and education as
marquee issues for his candidacy,
downplaying the signicance of achieving
a potential rst.
I think it shows that my state of
Colorado and the country is ready to
select the best person to move our state
forward and not pick somebody based
on who they love, but rather based on
what they can do for the state and how
they can make the economy work for
everybody, Polis said.
Other politicians have paved the way
for Polis to become the rst openly gay
person elected governor. In 2004, then-
New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevy declared
he was gay after he was elected and
shortly before he resigned amid scandal
in which he was having an aair with
a male staer. Last year, Oregon Gov.
Kate Brown, whos bisexual and married
to a man, earned the distinction of
becoming the rst openly LGBT person
elected governor after her appointment
to the role following the resignation of
her predecessor.
But no one who has identies as openly
gay has won a governors race.
Polis, the rst gay parent in Congress,
could face competition for that place
in history. In Maryland, State Sen. Rich
Madaleno has declared his bid to challenge
Gov. Larry Hogan in the 2018 elections.
In Connecticut, State Comptroller Kevin
Lembo has launched an exploratory
committee to determine whether to
pursue a gubernatorial campaign.
Polis has to best a crowded eld of
candidates in the Democratic primary
before the general election in 2018.
Meanwhile, hes focusing on the future
of the state that hes served for 10 years
in Congress since the beginning of the
Obama administration and for one last
term in the U.S. House.
People are focused more on my 100
percent renewable energy goal, my eorts
to improve the schools and my experience
in public education showing that I can do
it and my plan to help make our economy
work for everybody, Polis said.

Washington Blade: Why are you
running for governor of Colorado at
this time?
Jared Polis: I think our state needs a
bold leader to take us into the future,
and Ive represented a new generation of
leadership for our state with a vision for
where our state needs to go in terms of
reaching 100 percent renewable energy,
establishing universal preschool and
kindergarten and creating an economy
that works for everybody not just
investors and CEOs.
And I dont see much progress on any of
those issues coming from Washington in
the age of Trump, and its time to go home
and make our state a shining example of
what the future looks like for America.
Blade: But, of course, your candidacy
represents something a little bit
dierent because if you are elected,
you could be the rst openly gay
person elected as governor in the
United States. What do you think the
signicance of that would be?
Polis: Well, we certainly have examples,
as you know, like Kate Brown and Jim
McGreevey, but I guess I would be the
rst how did you phrase it?
Blade: The rst openly gay person
elected governor inthe United States.
Polis: Yeah, I guess thats right. Well,
you know, I think it shows that my state
of Colorado and the country is ready to
select the best person to move our state
forward and not pick somebody based on
who they love, but rather based on what
they can do for the state and how they can
make the economy work for everybody.
Blade: Colorado has seena lot of

advancements on LGBT rights thanks
to the courts and a non-discrimination
law. Assuming that stays in place,
which well talk about later, how
would you further advance LGBT
rights as governor of Colorado?
Polis: Well, I would say that my state
and my hometown is the birthplace of
same-sex marriage the very same year I
was born, 1975. The town I was born in,
Boulder, Colo., had the rst same-sex
marriages in the entire country. Our then-
Clerk Clela Rorex married several couples
within months of when I was born until
she was stopped by the state.
Now 42 years later, Clela Rorex is back in
Boulder County and supporting my eorts
to become governor and its exciting to see
the progress that weve made across the
country on equality issues.
Blade: One issueI thought you might
mention is the legislation that would
ban widely discredited conversion
therapy for youth. That has moved
through the legislature, but it hasnt
quite made it to passage.
Polis: Right. It has not yet passed in
Colorado. Absolutely. So, there certainly
remains work to be done. Many other
states have already passed similar laws.

would support?
Polis: Yes. I think our current governor
does as well. It hasnt been able to pass
the legislature yet, the bill that would
prevent parents from forcing their
kids into conversion therapy. Thats
unfortunately still legal in Colorado.
Blade: Lets talk a little bit about the
Supreme Court because just this week
it decided to take up a case in which
a Colorado baker is challenging the

states non-discrimination law on the
basis that they feel like they should
be able to refuse to make a wedding
cake for a same-sex couple. Why do
you think the Supreme Court decided
to take up this case and howdo you
predict they will rule?
Polis: Well, rst Im glad that the
Colorado Supreme Court upheld the
lower court that public businesses cannot
discriminate and Im hopeful that the
Supreme Court will swiftly agree.
Blade: Can you talk a little bit more
about why its important to have the
non-discrimination law in Colorado
in eect for the purposes of public
accommodations and wedding services?
Polis: Any business that is open to the
public shouldnt discriminate, and Im
hopeful that the Supreme Court will agree
with the Colorado Supreme Court and
the lower courts who have all found that
our inclusive non-discrimination statute
protects people from discrimination in a
business that presents itself in a form of
public accommodation.
Blade: To what extent do you think
the case before the Supreme Court is
going to animate the gubernatorial
campaign either in the primary or
general election?
Polis: I havent heard much about
it, Chris, in Colorado. I think its being
followed more nationally, but I have
not heard much about it from my
constituents.
People are more focused on my 100
percent renewable energy goal, my
eorts to improve the schools and my
experience in public education showing
that I can do it and my plan to help make
our economy work for everybody, so I
have a very specic plan in each of those
areas both a bold progressive vision
for our state as well as the proven results
in my private and public sector work to
turn ideas into reality.
Blade: Whats your assessment of the
Trump administration and the way its
handled LGBT rights?
Polis: Well, I think its been a very
been symbolic missteps like failing to
issue a Pride proclamation, which should
have been a routine feel-good moment
for the Trump administration to lend
support. And, of course, we continue
to be worried with their eorts that
could be underway to undermine anti-
discrimination eorts, so while I feel that
they have at least been willing to talk to
the community at times, so far Ive been
disappointed by their track record.

Pentagon agrees to six-month delay for trans enlistments
Service chiefs call for

Defense Secretary James Mattis has
agreed to a request from military service
chiefs for a six-month delay in allowing
openly transgender people to enlist in the
U.S. armed forces.
Dana White, a Pentagon spokesperson,
said Mattis last week approved a
recommendation by the services to defer
accessing transgender applicants into the
military until Jan. 1, 2018.
The services will review their accession
plans and provide input on the impact to
the readiness and lethality of our forces,
White said.
Mattis agreed to the delay after the
military service chiefs made a joint
request for the delay in transgender
accession, which was set to begin July 1
as a result of a policy change under the
Obama administration.

Despite the U.S. Supreme Court extending
marriage equality nationwide and a
recent declaration from justices arming
that decision the Texas Supreme Court
last week ruled against spousal benets for
married same-sex couples.
Writing for the court, Justice Jerey
Boyd determined the 2015 decision in
Obergefell v. Hodges is not the end on
the same-sex marriage issue and state
workers have no established right to
obtain benets, such as health insurance,
for their same-sex spouses in the same
way as other employees.
The Supreme Court held in Obergefell
that the Constitution requires states to
license and recognize same-sex marriages
to the same extent that they license and
recognize opposite-sex marriages, but it did
not hold that states must provide the same
publicly funded benets to all married
persons, and unlike the Fifth Circuit in
De Leon it did not hold that the Texas
DOMAs are unconstitutional, Boyd writes.

remand, and the trial court is not required
to conduct its proceedings consistent
with that case, Boyd writes.
Further, the Texas Supreme Court
reverses the judgment of the Texas 14th
Court of Appeals that overturned the trial
courts decision.
The case was led by Jack Pidgeon and
Larry Hicks after former Houston Mayor
Annise Parker, a lesbian, instructed her
city to provide spousal benets to city
employees in same-sex marriages after
the Supreme Courts 2013 ruling against
the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act. Jack
Pidgeon and Larry Hicks contended state
law, which at the time barred same-sex
marriage, prevented Parker from taking
that action.
The Texas Supreme Court decision
seems to fall short of outright denying
spousal benets for married same-sex
couples and instead remands the case
to a trial court for reconsideration of the
issue. The Texas Supreme Court also

change after Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.)
threatened to amend major defense
policy legislation with an amendment
barring transgender military service if
the Pentagon didnt act to reverse the
Obama-era change internally.

More than 1 million people lined the streets of Madrid on July 1, for the WorldPride
2017 march and parade.

MADRID More than a million people lined the streets of the Spanish capital
on Saturday for the 2017 WorldPride march and parade.
Representatives of Spains main political parties the Popular Party, the
Spanish Socialist Workers Party, Podemos, Ciudadanos and Izquierda Unida
and Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena are among those who participated in the
event that took place under the slogan For LGBTI Rights All Over the World.
Several dozen Russian LGBT rights advocates and members of Democrats
Abroad are among those who took part in the massive march from the Atocha
train station to Plaza de Coln that began at 6 p.m. local time (noon EST). The
Associated Press reported 52 oats also took part in the parade that was still
going on when the Washington Blade left the area between the Prado Museum
and the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid shortly after 11 p.m. (5 p.m. EST).
Marchers carried signs, banners and fans that read, among other things, To
love is not a crime.
One group marched with a banner that read, We trans men exist. Another
marcher was holding a sign that described the Israeli governments policies
towards the Palestinians as Apartheid. A man who was standing on the edge
of a fountain near the Prado Museum was wearing a blue t-shirt that read,
Impeach 45 in reference to President Trump.
A group of Portuguese men who were walking on Madrids Gran Via before the
march were wearing t-shirts that had a caricature of Russian President Vladimir
Putins face against the backdrop of a rainbow ag.
Fuck you Putin, read a message that was printed on the back of the t-shirts.
We will stop you with our gayness.
WorldPride took place against the backdrop of the ongoing persecution of
gay men and lesbians in Chechnya, a semi-autonomous Russian republic that
is located in the North Caucuses. German lawmakers on Friday approved a bill
that would extend marriage rights to same-sex couples.
The Associated Press reported terrorism concerns prompted ocials to close
several streets around the area in which the march and parade took place, ban
large trucks and deploy more than 3,000 police ocers. The Blade on early
Saturday morning saw police ocers search a womans backpack as she walked
towards a square in Madrids Chueca neighborhood in which one of the many
WorldPride stages was located.
Ocials have not reported any terrorism-related incidents.

German lawmakers approve same-sex marriage bill
German lawmakers last week approved a bill that will extend marriage rights to
same-sex couples.
The measure passed in the lower house of the German Parliament, which is known as
the Bundestag, by 393-226 vote margin with four abstentions.
The vote took place less than a week after Chancellor Angela Merkel announced her
position on whether to allow a vote on the issue had changed.
She told the editor of a German magazine that she recently had dinner with a
lesbian couple who are raising eight foster children. Merkel, who is a member of the
conservative Christian Democratic Party, voted against the bill.
The Social Democratic, Green and Free Democratic Parties all back marriage rights
for same-sex couples. Fridays vote took place ahead of elections that are scheduled to
take place on Sept. 24.
Germany since 2001 has allowed gays and lesbians to enter into civil partnerships. It
is among the last countries in western Europe that have not extended marriage rights
to same-sex couples.
Gays and lesbians can legally marry in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the
Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Portugal, England, Wales, Scotland,
Ireland and Iceland. Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who won re-election earlier
this month, said his government plans to introduce a same-sex marriage bill.
The German bill is expected to become law by the end of the year.
After years of waiting and hoping, rainbow families in Germany will now receive equal
recognition under the law, said ILGA-Europe Executive Director Evelyne Paradis in a
statement. This is a historic milestone that can inspire even more change for LGBTI people.
Ty Cobb, director of Human Rights Global, also welcomed the vote.
With the very serious challenges the LGBTQ community continues to face around
the world, this is welcome news and an important victory in working to ensure LGBTQ
people are embraced as full members of society, he said.
Fridays vote took place a day before up to three million people are expected to line
the streets of Madrid for the WorldPride parade. Hundreds of advocates from across
Europe have been attending LGBT rights conferences and other events in the Spanish
capital this week.
Lars Vorberger is a member of the board of directors of Rainbow Rose, the LGBT
network of the Party of European Socialists, who lives in the German city of Hamburg.
He described the vote as really wonderful as he spoke with the Washington Blade on
Friday during a Rainbow Rose and Party of European Socialists conference that is taking
place at the Spanish Socialist Workers Party headquarters in Madrid.
Its great to really celebrate this big decision and the big step we took this morning in
Germany, said Vorberger.

gets nod from Victory Fund
Kris Fair, general manager of New York, New York Salon and chair of The
Frederick Center board, a non-prot LGBT support organization in Central
Maryland, has received the endorsement from the Victory Fund in his quest to
be a member of the Frederick City Board of Aldermen.
The Victory Fund provides campaign, fundraising and communications support
to LGBT candidates to increase the number of openly LGBT elected ocials.
If elected, Fair, 32, promises to continue advocating for LGBT priorities.
The Frederick Center has worked closely with the City of Frederick to increase
its HRC municipality equality index, Fair told the Blade when he announced his
candidacy in January. As Alderman, I will investigate ways we can make our city
more inclusive of the LGBT community and of diversity in general.

HIV self-testing kits to be offered in U.K.

LONDON A study in London is being conducted to determine if free HIV
home testing kits will reduce cases of undiagnosed HIV, MedicalXPress reports.
The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Public Health England
are conducting an online study with the National Institute for Health Research
to help get things started. Hook-up apps, social media and LGBT media are also
being used.

Notably, questioning students were four times as likely as straight students to
have tried heroin.
The study also found disparities in the misuse of prescription drugs.
Transgender students were three times as likely as non-transgender students

vote even if you dont live there full time.
By law you can vote in Rehoboth Beach
elections even if you normally vote in
Maryland, Virginia, D.C., Philadelphia or
somewhere else. You can also register
and request an absentee ballot if you
wont be in town on Aug. 12. With such a
small number of voters you have an even
greater responsibility to do your civic
duty. You can vote by absentee ballot.An

Many dont realize the Rehoboth Beach
zip code, 19971, includes thousands
whose homes and businesses include
the address Rehoboth Beach but who
live outside the approximately one mile
boundaries of the actual city and arent
eligible to vote in the Aug. 12 election for
mayor and City Commission. But what
happens in the City of Rehoboth impacts
their lives and property values so it makes
the 1,624 voters even more important.
For the past 30 years, the denizens of
the City of Rehoboth have elected the
same mayor. A mayor who over the years
has made homophobic remarks; who
apparently doesnt really understand, or
want to acknowledge, how the business
community in the city drives tourism;
who often conducts the business of the
city in secret; who was born into wealth
owning a large compound in the city and
has a personal interest in keeping prop-
erty taxes low and nding ways to tax ev-
eryone else to pay the bills.
His latest, and hopefully the last, in-

competent decision was to build the new
City Hall complex currently going up on
Rehoboth Avenue. Because of poor plan-
ning and the mayor making many deci-
sions on the project in secret, the un-
sightly edice known to many as Coopers
Palace (Sam Cooper being the name of
the current mayor) is millions of dollars
over budget and way behind schedule.
In a recent letter to the Cape Gazette, a
resident of the city said he and his wife

impressed me the most was the cost of
the $22,000,000 building worked out to
over $13,500 for each of the 1,624 reg-
istered Rehoboth voters. Many voters
in the city who I have talked to hope this
obscenity is the nal act for this mayor
and that the majority of voters will have
reached a point where they will no longer
tolerate incompetent leadership.
The voters are lucky because this year
there is a great alternative who has tossed
his hat into the ring. His name is Paul Kuhns
and he currently serves on the Board of
Commissioners. Kuhns is a longtime resi-
dent of Rehoboth and a businessman in
the city. He has a comprehensive under-
standing of budgets and reality. He has
been speaking to voters and explaining,

Wage study warning on too-high, too-fast minimums

Recent attempts to hyper-hike minimum
wage levels to $15 hit a hard wall of resistance
over the past year that intensied last week.
Outside a small number of cities and even
fewer states, broad public support for raising
the national minimum wage above the cur-
rent $7.25 has failed to induce a phased-in $15
rate most everywhere. Existing variable state
and local minimum pay levels above the fed-
eral rate have also stayed fairly static.
Prevailing are commonsense market-
place realities and economist warnings of
downsides and trade-os in setting mini-
mum wages above the $9-to-$10 range that
the CBO established as the threshold for
mitigating harm to workers when evaluating
only job-loss implications.

Dyke March aims for safe space for all unless youre Jewish

Pride weekend is a celebration unlike any
other. For LGBTQ activists like myself, it is
an opportunity to bring our diverse com-
munity together. To celebrate how far we
have come. And to honor the lives of those
brave men and women whose shoulders
we stand on, who fought tirelessly for equal
rights for all people. Oh, and to have just a
little bit of fun.
And so it was profoundly disappointing to
read reports from the recent Dyke March, a
separate but conuent event with Chicagos
traditional annual Pride parade. The Dyke
March was supposed to be intersectional,
sold by its organizers as more inclusive
and more social justice-oriented. Just that
their inclusiveness and justice-oriented world
stopped with the Jews. At the event, three
queer women were asked to leave the march
because they were holding a rainbow ag
adorned with the Jewish Star of David. The
women were bullied by being asked if they
were Zionists.When they answered in the af-
rmative, this was so upsetting to marchers
and organizers that they were triggered and
made to feel unsafe.
The Star of David, of course, has only re-
cently been used to identify with Zionism and
the State of Israel, and it is indeed used today
as a symbol of modern Jewish identity and
Judaism. Despite its recent renaissance and
companying danger of declining net incomes
caused by reduced work hours as a conse-
quence of accelerated wage hikes have con-
tributed to growing caution. Barriers to em-
ployment for lesser-skilled workers in need of
jobs but priced-out of hiring consideration
have also recommended a slowdown in statu-
tory increases.
Perversely and not without irony, a moti-
vation for states to enact higher-than-bene-
cial minimum wage levels is that doing so
reduces Medicaid rolls by pushing part-time
and low-wage workers above income eligi-
bility restrictions.
Dead-ending the largely failed attempt to
mandate too steep hikes in minimum wage
rates is new data indicating smaller paychecks
for many at the lower-end of the wage scale
as the result.
Last weeks release of a study taking a more
comprehensive look at the real-world conse-
quences for workers of raising the minimum
wage too high and too fast in a city implement-
ing an eventual $15 wage minimum provided
another red ag.
An in-depth University of Washington re-
port, commissioned by the Seattle city govern-
ment, detailed a large and negative eect on
the earnings of lower-wage workers as the lo-
cal minimum wage rose from $11 to $13 in a
prominence on the Israeli ag, the rst arche-
ological example of the symbol can be found
in Israel, appearing in a stone from a 3rd or
4th century synagogue. The star continues to
appear through the historical record into the
Middle Ages and into the 20th century.
The history turns darker before and dur-
ing World War II, when Jews in Nazi Germany
and across occupied Europe were severely
punished for not identifying themselves
clearly with the star on their clothing. Later,
Jews were forced to wear the star on their
uniforms in the death camps before being
murdered in gas chambers. All in all, more
than six million Jews were exterminated dur-
ing the Holocaust.
But before historys greatest criminal en- From Syria to Russia, from Nigeria to Iran,
terprise, righteous gentiles around Europe
stood with their Jewish compatriots by wear-
ing the star in the streets. This act of mean-
ingful resistance helped defy the Nazi invad-
ers and was a powerful show of solidarity
with their Jewish friends and compatriots.
Like the brave European gentiles who
proudly wore their Star of David under Nazi
dictatorship, the Dyke March organizers
had an opportunity to embrace the symbol
in the spirit of resistance. Instead, the orga-
nizers accomplished something very dier-
ent and sinister.
They acted so that any openly Jewish
person does not have a place under the
rainbow ag unless they denounce Is-

The study indicated that lower-wage em-
ployees not losing their jobs, including those
earning up to $19, on average worked nearly
10 percent fewer hours. This resulted in an av-
erage $1,500 net decline in annual low-wage
worker incomes due to reduced job hours put
in place by employers struggling to balance
the bottom line.
Even worse for the Fight for 15 crowd, this
development was accompanied by news of
a study shopping scandal involving Seattle
Mayor Ed Murray.
Murray, a $15 minimum wage proponent,
was desperate to minimize the impact and
undermine the ndings of the city-funded
report. He panicked once the highly qualied
and unbiased research team, including eco-
nomic experts from across the policy spec-
trum, passed along preliminary ndings in
advance of public release.
The worried mayor hoped the University
of Californias Berkeley Labor Center would
churn out another predictable analysis mask-
ing the negative ramications of fast-and-large
minimum wage hikes. The scholarly credibility
of the perceived-for-hire Berkeley group was
further damaged and Murrays motivations
politically backred by media exposure of cor-
respondence between them.

liberals, people of color and whites, and ev-
eryone in between. We rally under the rain-
bow ag to show our support for all LGBTQ
people, including the many millions around
the world struggling for basic equality.

ple cannot be who they are. They must hide
in the shadows or risk arrest, torture, and
execution by barbaric regimes whose intol-
erance knows no bounds.
The Dyke March organizers have a
standing invitation to join me in Israel for
next years Pride to see for themselves the
thriving pluralistic democracy that exists in
a region lled with intolerance and hate, in-
cluding Palestine where LGBTQ people are
routinely harassed.
If they really are what they claim to be,
they should join me and many others in de-
manding equal rights for Palestinians in the
West Bank and Gaza, where homosexuality

The orchestrated Berkeley report was
overshadowed by the more thorough and
sophisticated University of Washington study
dominating discussion by economists, policy-
makers, and the public.
Another setback last week for minimum-
wage-revisionist proponents was Maines leg-
islature restoring the tip credit wage system
after tipped employees pleaded they do so.
Forcing restaurants and bars to pay tipped
employees the full minimum wage rather
than a base wage with minimum wage guar-
antee results in lost jobs, reduced hours, and
signicant drops in income only partly due re-
ductions or terminations in customer tipping.
The D.C. Council last year rejected end-
ing the tip-wage system when overwhelming
numbers of servers and bartenders urged
them to preserve the tip credit to protect
their livelihoods and good wages.
D.C., currently increasing the local mini-
mum wage by 180 percent in only six years
and scheduled to reach $15 mid-2020, is also
planning to conduct a wage policy evaluation.
Unknown is whether local politicians
will commission a legitimate independent
study and comprehensive analysis, or a
Berkeley-style report designed to rubber-
stamp their decision.

One day, if we stick together, we can all
march together in Ramallah or Gaza City to
celebrate what brings us together, and not
what drives us apart. Sadly, this is not pos-
sible today.
American Jews have been on the forefront
of every civil rights movement in American
history - from supporting better working con-
ditions for workers during the industrial revo-
lution, to the ght for womens surage, to
the bloody civil rights movement for people
Jews have consistently fought for the rights
of the marginalized and oppressed. And
yet the Jewish community faces new dan-
gers from the far-right and the far-left. Hate
crimes against Jews are on the rise. Our cem-
eteries are being defaced, and our students
are being bullied on college campuses.
Laying the seeds of peace and tolerance
isnt easy. Advancing the rights of all margin-
alized people across the world will require
hard work from everyone. Even if youre
openly Jewish.

Hot summer days are a great time to
stay cool indoors while learning about a
range of topics including science, art and
history. Whether its with kids, friends, a
signicant other or even a solo trip there
are plenty of museum options to take
advantage of in the city.
Renwick Gallery is oering Parallax Gap,
designed by architectural design practice
FreelandBuck through Feb. 11, 2018. The
piece will be suspended from the ceiling
and surround the length of the Renwick.
The installation combines both Eastern and
Western perspectives in nine depictions of
famous American buildings. For more details,

National Building Museum (401 F St.,
N.W.) hosts Hive, a large-scale model built
from 2,700 wound paper tubes, from July
4-Sept. 4. The installation is 60 feet tall with

The summer is the perfect time to
get outside, enjoy the sunshine and do
something dierent. From cycling and
hiking, to paddle boarding and horse
back riding, D.C. oers an endless array
of outdoor activities, if you just only know
where to look.
CYCLE HAINS POINT OR
THE MT. VERNON TRAIL
If youre into cycling, D.C. has no
shortage of quality places to ride.
While many of those spots are
outside the city, you can get a great
ride without having to travel just by
heading out to Hains point or the
Mt. Vernon Trail. Hains Point offers
the benefit of minimal traffic and a
cool breeze that constantly blows off
the water that surrounds it. The Mt.
Vernon trail boasts miles of riverside
path and gorgeous views of the most
historic sites in the District from
the edge of Virginia. Either route is
easily accessible from the National
Mall area.
PADDLEBOARDING
ON THE POTOMAC
Want to get out on the water? Head
down to the Potomac River where
you can rent a stand up paddleboard
for an active day on calm waters.
Its excellent for your core. Some
yoga classes are even taught on the
paddleboards. Looking for something
different? You can rent a kayak or go
rowing as well.
HIKE GREAT FALLS
Ever heard of the Billy Goat Trail?
Its a beautiful route in Northern
Virginia with technical trails and
beautiful sights. Need something
more relaxed? Youll have no trouble
finding the perfect route on one of
the countless trails throughout Great
Falls. You can piece a nice hike with
friends together with a picnic to have
a relaxing day that allows you to
forget about the hustle bustle of the
city for a day.
RIDE A HORSE IN
ROCK CREEK PARK
Did you know there are horse stables
in Rock Creek Park? You can book one-
hour trail rides right next to the creek
itself. No experience needed. These arent
fast gallops, but rather just casual walks
down the trail. But your thighs will still get
a quality workout. You can pair this with a
nature hike to make a full day of it. Youll
barely even realize youre still in the District.

RUN A SPARTAN RACE
With events at Nationals park on
Saturday, July 22 and in Maryland on
Saturday, Sept. 9, you have multiple
attempts to conquer your rst obstacle
race this summer. Run, jump, climb and

with about 25 obstacles. The course at
Nats park is especially appealing given
its Metro accessibility and the fact theres
no mud in that race. Its an excellent
opportunity to get out of your comfort
zone and still be home in time for lunch.

NEW NOVEL FROM JOHN BOYNE AMONG RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS

One of the nicest things about a
staycation is you nally have a chance to
read for pleasure. Here are some books
slated for summer release.
The novel lover in you should be happy
to see a new book by John Boyne. Set in
Ireland, The Hearts Invisible Furies
(August) is the story of a man who is
adopted as a child and spends the rest
of his life trying to get to know who he
really is. If youve ever read Boyne, you
know youre in for a treat; if youre new to
Boyne, get thee to a bookstore now.
In A House Among the Trees by Julia
Glass (out now), a childrens book author
dies and leaves everything to his assistant,
who is baed by whats in his will. Shed
known him most of her life, through his
fame, his secrets and eccentricities and
his battle with AIDS. But did she really
know him? As she unravels what hes left
her, she looks to a future without him.
After a young painter is stricken with
artists block, shes invited to work at a
mysterious estate, where she must learn
to listen to her heart. Thats the basic plot
of The Gallery of Unnished Girls, a
young adult novel by Lauren Karcz (July).
Will the young woman nd the courage to
tell her best friend shes in love with her?
Or will the estate itself change what she
nds within herself?
If your taste in reading runs more
into biographies, then look for Self-
Made Woman by Denise Chanterelle
DuBois (August). Its the story of a little
boy growing up in the 1960s, at a time

girl inside the boy. That leads to a lifetime
of ghting past the pain with a dangerous
mix of outside methods and, for the
book, an ultimate triumph. You might

Davis (out now), which questions why
and where as a society, we need gender
categories anyhow.
What was it like to be on the front
lines of activism in the rst days of the
AIDS epidemic? In The Pox Lover: An
Activists Decade in New York and
Paris by Anne-christine dAdesky (out
now), youll read about the work done
on several continents to keep the virus
front and center in the minds of those
who would have rather forgotten it. But
this book isnt all serious; surprisingly,
dAdesky has some fun with her memoir,
and it cant be missed.
Accidental Activists: Mark Phariss,
Vic Holmes, and Their Fight for
Marriage Equality in Texas by David
Collins, forewords by Evan Wolfson and
by Julian Castro (August) tells the story of
a lawsuit and the men behind it. Phariss
and Holmes had been together longer
than were most heterosexual couples, but
their state forbade marriage. They sued to
change that, and this book tells the story.
For something on the lighter side, look
for Queer, There, and Everywhere:
23 People Who Changed the World
by Sarah Prager, illustrated by Zoe More
OFerrall (out now). Its a book lled
with quick-to-read bios of LGBT game-
changers that you may (or may not have)
heard of before. Its a fun read for those
times when you need a distraction that
you can put down fast.
And nally, if your summer will fail
without a book thats just meant to look at,
then youll want to nd The Box by Ron
Amato and Morphosis by Salem Beiruti
(out now). Theyre both photography
books from the Bruno Gruemender folks,
so you know theyre quality.

Beachfront dining without the drive
CAPITOL RIVERFRONT HAS SEVERAL NEW DINING SPOTS WORTH TRYING
It may ocially be called the Capitol
Riverfront, but I like to call it #DCRiviera.
Wander on any summer day along the
waterfront area of Southeast D.C. near
the Washington Navy Yard and into the
adjacent Southwest neighborhood, which
is about to explode with dining options
once the District Wharf development
opens this fall, and youll nd spectacular
water views and a holiday atmosphere.
Why sit in Rehoboth Beach trac when a
quick ride on the Green Line can oer up
a daiquiri in the sunshine before youve
even decided which SPF tanning lotion to
use? Grab your bikini and dive in.
The Salt Line (79 Potomac Ave., S.E.;
thesaltline.com) is the newest hot spot
near Nationals Stadium, and with good
reason. With a kitchen led by Kyle Bailey,
a culinary perfectionist if there ever was
one, and a bar program overseen by
Donato Alvarez, who made a name for
himself through his perfectly nuanced
cocktails at Sixth Engine, the restaurant
already has the building blocks of a stellar
waterfront establishment.
If you yearn for clear New England
summer days, the Salt Line is the place
where you can try to forget about the
sweltering mid-Atlantic humidity. The
raw bar features a rotating selection
of fresh oysters hailing from Maine,
Massachusetts and Rhode Island, as well
as varieties farmed a bit closer to home,
and the dinner menu is packed with
Succulent seafood selections from the Salt Line.

buttery lobster stued into split top buns,
soft shell crabs given the spicy Nashville
treatment, and fried clam bellies straight
out of Ipswich. While a frosty Narragansett
lager goes down a treat with fried
seafood, check out the refreshing Saltier
Dog cocktail and be sure to order up the
Wicked Good Daiquiri.
Whaleys (301 Water St., S.E.;
whaleysdc.com) is bright, airy and air-
conditioned all things that we like
on a steamy July afternoon but their
recently opened Ros Garden is worth
forsaking a few creature comforts.
Located just outside the restaurant
with a view of the Yards Park manmade
waterfall and the Anacostia River beyond,
the small patio is cheerily decked out
in hot pink and amingos, and while
the host sta can occasionally get a bit
shirty with ros-loving customers eagerly
looking for a seat (fair warning: tables can
be scarce and weve heard of three-hour
wait times), the overall eect is charming.
Youll nd just a few snacks on hand
including toast topped with uni butter,
Maryland crabmeat and slivered radishes
and the ubiquitous oysters on the half
shell and a couple of cocktails and beer,
but were here for the ros, summertimes
favorite wine. Your best bet is to order a
bottle or two for the table, as there are
only a few wines available by the glass,
and this is your opportunity to sample
ross that are not from France.

One of the best values is the Rubentis
Txakolina, a Spanish oering from the
Basque region laced with bright strawberry
notes and a touch of saltiness linked to the
vineyards seaside locale; its also slightly
eervescent for those who prefer their
ros to sparkle in the sunshine.
Bardo (25 Potomac Ave., S.E.; bardo.
beer) has now evolved into its fourth
iteration, after moving from Bladensburg
Road to a new waterfront spot just
steps from Nationals Park. While theyve
recently gotten into a bit of a spat with
local bicyclists who had the audacity to
suggest that the provided bike racks
might need a bit of improvement to
accommodate popular types of bike
locks, the space is still big and fun and
breezy. Located right on the Anacostia,
youll nd plenty of cornhole and picnic
tables, along with an eclectic array of
freshly brewed oerings.
Canine companions are not only
welcome, they are encouraged, with a large
dog run built into the center of the beer
garden, and while theres no food menu,
patrons are allowed to bring in take-out.
The beer menu is ever-changing, with about
a dozen oerings, which have been brewed
on-site in a glittering array of stainless steel
beer tanks, on tap at any one time.
Keep an eye out for the Chinook Pacic
Northwest Ale, which oers up plenty of
bright hoppiness on a hot day, and the
Bunbaberg Ginger Lager, an Australian

style summer ale packed with fresh
ginger in place of traditional hops.
Cantina Marina (600 Water St., S.W.;
cantinamarina.com) has been anchoring
the Southwest boat community for more
than a decade, a local version of the
Margaritaville-style marina bars found
dotting Floridas inland waterway. When
not arriving from the Waterfront Metro
station, patrons pull up to the doc by kayak
and catamaran as well, and live-aboards
from the Gangplank Marina, where the bar
is located, can be counted as regulars.
Theres plenty of classic rock and
quick service, as waitresses in short
shorts navigate the crowd with platters
of sh tacos and fried calamari; one of
the favorite items plenty big enough
for a table to share is the Super
Nachos, an impressively large portion of
chips, queso, and pico de gallo topped
with shrimp, steak, Andouille sausage,
jalapenos and avocado. The housemade
spicy Michelada can be made with your
choice of beer, or opt for any of the well-
priced cocktails, like the Black Eyed Wolf,
their version of the ocial Preakness
cocktail, or just kick back with a Dark n
Stormy and watch the sailboats gliding
past Hains Point.

Tony-winning Broadway diva has two upcoming Md. concert dates

Idina Menzel is a household name
(outside of the Travoltas that is), and is
beloved by young and old alike.
After making her Broadway debut in
Rent, she won a Tony Award for her
performance as Elphaba in Wicked,
a show that gave us Defying Gravity;
and shes the reigning queen of Disney,
having voiced Elsa in Frozen, the movie
that had the world singing Let It Go.
Once a decade I have had a great
project I have been lucky enough to be a
part of and audiences stick with me, says
Menzel, who plays the MGM National
Harbor this weekend.
Her vocal prowess is incredible and the
performer is in much demand in theater,
TV and lm. Shes currently on a world
tour and thinking about her next projects,
which will include a sequel to Frozen.
Thats one of the reasons more young
people are showing up at her concerts.
My audience is such a wide
demographic and I love that, Menzel says.
I used to have kids coming because they
loved Wicked and now many of them are
older and thats the nice thing about my
journey, we kind of grow up together.
Menzel, who played lesbian Maureen
Johnson in the original Broadway
production of Rent, as well as in the
movie a decade later, recently penned a
love letter to the LGBT community for
Billboard, in which she wrote: You are
the courageous heroes who have showed
the rest of us what it means to be true and
honest and stand up for each other and
to love that very thing about ourselves
that might set us apart from others.
She says she has long been inspired by
her LGBT fan base and is honored to be
considered something of a gay icon in
the entertainment world, something she
aspired to be when she was young.
Just look at all the women that Ive
revered in my life, theyve all been beloved
by the gay community and I always knew
when I was starting that if I wasnt in with
that club, then I hadnt made it, she says.
As soon as I felt like I was being included
and appreciated and supported (by the
LGBT community), it just really meant
everything to me.
It was while working on Rent when
Menzel rst started to notice the
connection. She often received letters
from kids struggling with their sexual
orientation who thanked her for helping
them be brave and come out by playing
such a strong and empowered character
as Maureen.

other. Its got some truth to it, but

project, the Lifetime remake of Bette
Midler classic Beaches, have all been
embraced by the LGBT community who,
like many, have been clamoring to see
the singer in concert. In addition to her
one-night-only performance at National
Harbor, she plays the Model Performing
Art Center at the Lyric in Baltimore on
Tuesday, July 18.
The concerts will feature songs o her
latest album, idina and of course she
will sing many of the Broadway tunes for
which she is known.
I always try to shoot for an intimate
performance. Im going to do some music
from the new album, but Ill also do some
of the music people will expect to hear
and also some other covers, she says. Its
an eclectic evening. I have had the same
musicians for a lot of years and were just
having a blast and are comfortable and
having fun. Its been great.
Those who have seen Menzel in
concert before know that the singer likes
to interact with her audience and usually
chooses a lucky person from the crowd
come up on stage and sing with her. And

she makes sure to tell fun stories and play
around between songs.
Theres always audience
participation, she says. I nd the
audiences who come to my shows are
so supportive and enthusiastic and
theres a warm feeling back and forth so
its easy to talk to them and make them
part of the show.
The week before the MGM show,
Menzel will be concluding two weeks of
concerts in Europe, which followed some
tour dates in Asia. Rather than give the
pat performer answer of enjoying touring
because she gets to see the world, she
admits its not always easy to see the
sights because shes too busy preparing
for the shows.
Honestly, what I love more about
touring all over the world is this idea IDINA MENZEL with JAMES SNYDER in If/Then, which played in D.C. at the National Theatre in

Even Obamas must contemplate renting vs. buying

The Obama familysdecision this sum-
mer to purchase the Kalorama home
they have been renting since they left
the White House created a lot of buzz,
much like when they announced last
spring their plans to stay in D.C. while
their youngest daughter finished high
school at Sidwell Friends. They bought
the luxury property for $8.1 million and
an Obama spokesperson stated, given
that the President and Mrs. Obama will
be in Washington for at least another two
and a half years, it made sense for them
to buy a home rather than continuing to
rent property.
This, of course, means that the Obam-
as faced a decision that millions of Ameri-
cans especially in D.C. contemplate
each year: If you know that you are going
to be living in a particular city for at least
a certain period of time, should you rent
or should you buy?
For mere mortals (not a former POTUS
and FLOTUS), this decision typically hing-
es on the following questions and anyone
contemplating renting vs. buying should
ask the following before making a choice:

Generally speaking, the longer you expect
to live in an area, the more likely it is that
owning will make more sense than renting.
For the former president and first lady,
the decision was likely much more com-
plex. It is not known how much they were
paying in rent, but some estimate the
property at $22,000/month. The Obamas
purchased their home in a holding com-
pany, which would not be eligible for a

private wealth banker was likely an option.
Just for fun, if we assume the monthly
rent was $22,000, then it appears that
would be a much smaller monthly pay-
ment versus owning. If the Obamas put
down 20 percent, then they would still
need to finance $6,480,000. Assuming
they were able to borrow at 4.25 percent,
this would cost approximately $33,000/
month plus an additional $5,000/month
in taxes, and likely $3,000/month in insur-
ance. So, the question is rent at $22,000/
month or own at $41,000? The house
would need to appreciate $108,000 a year
just to cover the higher monthly payment.
We will likely never know how much
the rent was, and we will surely never
know how the financing was structured
on their purchase. What we do know is
the Obamas are true D.C. residents now
and faced the age-old question fellow
Metro residents ask daily, Do we rent or
should we buy? Just remember to weigh
all the pros and cons of renting vs. buying
and do your research before jumping into
a huge financial commitment. Also know
it isnt always about what you can afford,
but also if the home and location match
your familys lifestyle both now and in the
years to come as your kids grow.
