Vote for new police station funding pushed to 2018

laremont voters will
have to wait another
year before they see a
police station measure on the
ballot.
The Police Facility Ad Hoc Commit-
tee set a ballot date for June 5, 2018, ap-
proved the police station site plans and
narrowly-approved a general obligation
(GO) bond funding mechanism during
the June 28 meeting at the Hughes Cen-
ter.
The station plans include a 26,000-
square-foot facility built at the current
police station site at 570 West Bonita
Avenue. The plans include a 25-space
impound lot, about 10 jail cells for men,
women and juveniles, ample office
space, a multipurpose room that can
hold up to 50 people and a 900-square-
foot exercise room.
Im excited about this plan, Clare-
mont Police Chief Shelly Vander Veen
said during her presentation. Im confi-
dent its going to be our police station
for the next 40 years.
In total, the cost of the station would
be $25 million over 25 years, which in-
cludes a $23.5 million bond plus a $1.5
million general fund contribution for
soft costs such as furniture and other
equipment.
Committee chair Marcia Horowitz
was especially proud of the progress the
committee made since first convening in
January 2016.
I think whats been really phenome-
nal is that weve been able to come to-
gether as a group and really create
something that meets everyones re-
quests, she said.
The group also unanimously ap-
proved the measures appearance on the
June 5, 2018 ballot. The committee cited
a need for time to educate Claremont
voters about the plan as a reason to push
the vote date. This was a sentiment
shared by Police Commissioner Ed
Reece.
Rushing this would not set us up to
win, he said.
This isnt the first time the committee
has pushed the vote to fund the project.
In June 2016, the committee voted to put
the bond on a 2017 ballot, again saying
it needed more time to educate the pub-
lic. During the committees presentation
to the city council in September 2016,
they recommended the GO bond appear
no later than the June 2017 ballot, ac-
cording to previous COURIER reports.
While the group unanimously ap-
proved the facility plans and the ballot
date this time around, they were more
divided on the funding mechanism.
The city presented two funding op-
tions: a GO bond, which would issue an
annual tax on homeowners based on
their assessed property value, and two
versions of a parcel taxa fixed annual
rate per parcel as well as a tax based on
square footage.
According to figures presented by the
city, the annual debt service under a GO
bond would amount to $1.44 million, for
a total of $36.06 million over 25 years.

$700,000, for example, they would be
paying $217.56 per year under a GO
bond, according to figures presented by
the city. Nonprofits, schools and com-
mercial property owners will not con-
tribute under a GO bond.
Under a flat rate parcel tax, home-
ownersas well as businesses and non-
profitswould each pay $146.02 per
parcel per year. If the parcel tax were
based on square footage, the annual pay-
ment would be $50.31 per 1,000 square
feetwhich amounts to $150.92 for a
3,000 square-foot home, the city says.
Whether its a parcel tax or GO bond,
either funding mechanism will require a
two-thirds majority vote to pass.
Ultimately, the committee members
decision came down to how much the
Claremont Colleges would contribute.

a definitive answer from Claremont Uni-
versity Consortium (CUC) CEO and
committee member Stig Lanesskog.
At Wednesdays meeting, the Col-
leges Presidents Council indicated that
while there is still no firm commitment
from the Colleges, any contribution
would have to be equal to the amount of
calls of service by the CPD, relative to
the final bond amount.
Police response to the Colleges made
up around three percent of all calls from
2011-2015. Based on the formula sug-
gestedand factoring in the $25 million
bondthe Claremont Colleges would
contribute around $750,000 toward con-
struction of the new station.
Under the square footage parcel tax,
the Claremont Colleges would pay about
$185,704 annually or $4,242,525 over
25 years, as opposed to just over
$16,000 annually with a GO bond or
$406,675 in 25 years.
After Claremont voters passed Meas-
ure S in 2006, a $12.5 million bond
measure to purchase 180 acres in John-
sons Pasture, the Claremont Colleges
pledged nearly $2.5 million to be paid
over 35 years to secure ownership of the
open space.
Mr. Lanesskog defended the Colleges
stance, emphasizing that CUC employ-
ees who own homes and pay taxes in
Claremont would be contributing toward
the bond, regardless of its structure.
When I look at it again sort of neu-
trally, it looks to me like you want to in-
crease the costs and shift the costs to
stick it to the Colleges, he said. That

isnt a narrative Im terribly comfortable
with, forgetting about the fact that I am
associated with the Colleges. And I just
want us to think about the other contri-
butions the Colleges provide to all of us,
that all of us get value in, including
specifically around campus.
Hal Hargrave called the figures into
question and advocated for a parcel tax
in part to get the Colleges to contribute
more.
In my 50-some-odd years of being a

The Colleges had previously commit-
ted $1 million toward the new police sta-
tion 2015, a figure that was reportedly
suggested by the city council but was
also criticized by some residents as
being too little. That bond measure,
which failed with voters, proposed up to
$50 million on a fixed tax rate of $286
per year per parcel.
Other committee members debated
the pros and cons of each funding op-
tion. Democratic Club of Claremont
Vice President Gar Byrum noted De-
mocrats would not support a parcel tax,
calling it regressive.
Carolyn Gonzales said residents
would pay more over time with a GO
bond, calling it the most unfair tax
there is.
In the end, the committee voted 7-5 in
favor of the GO bond.
Some committee members noted that
regardless of the funding structure, the
committees real job is coming together
and selling it to the public, with Helaine
Goldwater noting that, How we present
this to the community is really how this
passes or not.
The plans are set to go before a regu-
lar city council meeting for final ap-
proval no later than February 27, 2018.

Willamette, Claremont School of Theology explore partnership

illamette University and the
Claremont School of Theology
announced Monday that the
two schools would begin the due dili-
gence process to explore moving and
embedding CST within the Salem, Ore-
gon university.
Willamette and CST are both excellent schools
with much in commona focus on quality, and a
mission to educate students and prepare them for lives
that contribute to and transform their communities,
Willamette University President Steve Thorsett re-
lated in a press release Thursday morning. Embed-
ding CST at Willamette is an exciting opportunity to
bring CSTs progressive approach to theological edu-
cation to the Northwest, strengthen both institutions
and support Willamettes role as a liberal arts univer-
sity with strong graduate programs.
Last August, the School of Theology filed a lawsuit
against the Claremont University Consortium (CUC),
over a disagreement about real estate.
The conflict erupted after CST revealed its intent to
sell 10.5 acres of the 16.4-acre campus. CST wanted
$25 million for the land, located on College Avenue
on the north side of Foothill Boulevard. But the CUC,
the property for $4 million, the assessed fair market
value, according to CUC.
Embedding CST at Willamette will not just solve
immediate financial problems, but will allow the uni-
versity to grow, college officials said. CST President
Jeffrey Kuan sees the venture as a positive outcome to
a challenging year for the university.
CST is experiencing a period of enrollment and
programmatic growthand an opportunity to become
part of Willamette has the potential of sustaining and
supporting this momentum, Mr. Kuan said. I be-
lieve CSTs world-class faculty and our approach to
theological educationwith people of many faiths
learning and living side-by-sideis an excellent addi-
tion to Willamettes own dynamic community.
Combining CST and Willamette adds curricular
and co-curricular programs for undergraduate stu-
dents, and will create expanded options for graduate
study, the college said. Some of CSTs graduate pro-
grams could also pair with Willamettes existing grad-
uate programsa graduate school of management
and a college of lawas well as deepen coursework,
research and connections with Willamettes faculty
and students at all levels of study.
Embedding also allows CST to reduce overhead,
more efficiently address the rising costs of higher ed-
ucation and focus on student scholarship rather than
California gives CST the resources to continue pro-
grams in Oregon and contribute to shared overhead
costs, the college said.
In a fact sheet sent out to the community, President
Kuan and CSTs board of trustees related they have
examined every possible resource and angle to stay in
southern California.
Without an infusion of $50 to $90 million, our
current location is cost prohibitive, the release said.
Embedding within Willamette University is our best
chance for not only surviving, but thriving as a
provider of theological education. Willamettes fac-
ulty is very supportive of this idea, as are our faculty
members. We are each bringing something the other
partner would like.
President Kuan and CST Board of Trustees Chair
Rev. Patricia Farris have created four task forces
academic, finance, governance and facilitiesto
begin the process.
Willamette is one of few United Methodist univer-
sities in the western US, allowing the Claremont
School of Theology to retain its affiliation as a United
Methodist seminary.

Tuesday, June 27
A Pomona man was arrested on a
drunk in public charge in front of the
Claremont Library. When officers tried
to arrest 52-year-old Andrew Belasco
around 5:30 p.m., he began screaming
and kicking at officers, according to Det.
Isaac Reyes of the Claremont Police De-
partment. Mr. Belasco reportedly
shouted profanities at one of the officers.
He was arrested for public intoxication
and transported to CPD jail.
Thursday, June 29
Police are looking for a thief who
smashed a window of a Toyota Prius at
the Evey Canyon turnout. The burglary
happened at 3:15 p.m., when a man only
described as Caucasian in his 30s shat-
tered the front passenger window and
stole a purse. Credit cards from the purse
were used at various locations around
Upland, Det. Reyes said. An investiga-
tion is ongoing.

A 20-year-old Rowland Heights man
created quite a scene at Espiaus, Union
on Yale, Pizza N Such, Blaze Pizza and
Eureka Burger, after he took food off
diners tables and threw it at them, Det.
Reyes said. Manuel Avila also reportedly
asked female diners if they wanted to
see his beef. Once he got to Eureka
Burger at about 9:30 p.m., two customers
fought back and held him down until po-
lice arrived. During the scuffle, Mr. Avila
fell into a large glass window, causing a
large crack that had an estimated repair
cost of $400, Det. Reyes said. Mr. Avila
was arrested for battery and vandalism
and transported to CPD jail.
Friday, June 30
Police were called to the area of Col-
gate and San Jose Avenues around 3 a.m.
after 33-year-old Israel Arevalo yelled
F**k you! to a parking enforcement
officer who saw him laying on the side-
walk. When police arrived, they deter-
mined Mr. Arevalo was drunk after
seeing him trip over a curb and sway
from side to side, Det. Reyes said. When
officers attempted to detain him, Mr.
Arevalo reportedly laughed and pulled
away. Officers were able to grasp his
hand and arrest him for public intoxica-
tion and resisting arrest.

About $200 worth of costume jewelry
was taken from a home on the 4000
block of Las Casas. Just before 4:30
p.m., the burglar entered the home by
smashing a rear door window and turn-
ing a key that was left inside the lock,
Det. Reyes said. Once inside, the thief
ransacked the home before leaving with
the jewelry. There is no suspect descrip-
tion. Anyone with information should
call the Claremont Police Department at
(909) 399-5411.
Saturday, July 1
Beaux Enriquez, 50, was observed
yelling at passing cars and mumbling to
himself when officers contacted him in
front of the Village Market on Second
Street just after 4 p.m., Det. Reyes said.
The Claremont resident admitted to offi-
cers that he had finished an entire bottle
of white zinfandel that day. He report-
edly apologized to police when taken
into custody, Det. Reyes said.
Sunday, July 2
Police are looking for three men who
robbed a victim of his cell phone in the
area of Mount Carmel Drive and San
Diego Court. The victim was leaving a
party around 1:30 a.m. when two men
approached him and asked to use his cell
gave his iPhone to the men, they took off
to an awaiting vehicle, Det. Reyes said.
As the victim chased the men, one of
them tripped the victim, causing him to
fall down. The victim then ran in front of
the vehicle, and later told police the rob-
bers attempted to run him over. The first
suspect is described as an 18-year-old
African-American man, five feet, eight
inches tall and 125 pounds wearing a
Tommy Hilfiger hoodie and dark pants.
The second suspect is described as a 20-
year-old African-American man, five
feet, 10 inches tall and 160 pounds wear-
ing all dark clothing. The getaway car
driven by the third suspect was described
as a tan 2004 Honda Accord.

Police pulled over a 2006 Honda
Odyssey driven by 25-year-old Pasadena
resident Nakia Criddell on Towne Av-
enue and Foothill Boulevard just before
10:30 a.m., Det. Reyes said. The van had
been reported stolen in a carjacking by
the LAPD. During the traffic stop, police
found Ms. Criddell was driving without
a license, though she did not match the
description of the carjacking suspect.
Ms. Criddell was arrested for possession
of a stolen vehicle and driving without a
license. Two other women in the van
were also arrested, but were released
without charges when it was determined
they had no connection to the crime.

Los Angeles County Sheriffs are in-
vestigating an armed robbery that oc-
curred on Mount Baldy Road just above
the Claremont city limits. Around 10
p.m., three peopledescribed as two
Hispanic men and one Caucasian
womanapproached a car at a turnout
north of Shinn Road, according to police
logs. One of then men allegedly bran-
dished a handgun and demanded the two
victims wallets, according to Sgt.
Michael McGratton of the LA County
Sheriffs Department. The victims com-
plied, and the robbers left in a black
Honda Civic. There is no further infor-
mation available. Anyone with informa-
tion is urged to contact the LA County
Sheriffs Department San Dimas station

Monday, July 3
Police are investigating two burglaries
that occurred in the same area. The first
attempted burglary occurred at a home
on the 2200 block of Indian Hill Boule-
vard around 10:12 a.m. According to po-
lice, a 14-year-old girl asleep in her room
was awakened by the sound of a rear
sliding glass door breaking and saw two
burglars attempting to get inside, Det.
Reyes said. The girl screamed and ran
out of her bedroom, and the thieves fled
without entering the house. Nobody was
hurt.
Another house in the same area was
broken into between 11:45 a.m. and 2:40
p.m. on the 1400 block of Indian Hill
Boulevard. According to police, the
thieves entered through an unlocked
kitchen window and stole a MacBook
Pro, iPad and Nintendo DS worth $2200,
as well as an unknown amount of jew-
elry.
Police are currently investigating to
determine if the two burglaries are re-
lated. There is no suspect information.
Tuesday, July 4
A 1991 Honda Accord driven by 19-
year-old Ricardo Miranda of Pomona
was pulled over near Padua Avenue and
Mary Place after police observed him
driving without headlights on around
11:42 p.m., Det. Reyes said. During a
search, police found meth and a pipe in
Mr. Mirandas possession, and he was ar-
rested.

the Claremont Library. Fortunately for
them, the County of Los Angeles Public
Library has launched the Great Read
Away, which will allow all library card-
holders age 21 and younger to read off
any outstanding fees and fines.
Through the program, customers will have their
fees decreased by $5 for every hour they spend read-
ing at the Claremont Library or any other LA county
library.
The program will apply to all reading material in
the library, including books, ebooks, graphic novels,
comic books, magazines, newspapers, digital data-
bases and articles. Customers can also listen to audio-
books or have books read to them by a parent or
guardian.
The Great Read Away will allow customers to read
off fees of any type, including late fees, lost book fees
and library card replacement fees.
Currently, 13 percent of youth cardholders are

fines from their accounts and entice them to read in

register. To earn fee reductions, customers will be re-
quired to sign in and out of the library while reading
there, and will be granted fee reductions upon signing
out.
The library now offers new extended hours, so
Claremonts readers will have more opportunities to
visit the library to catch up on reading or simply
enjoy the air conditioning. The library will be open
Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.;
Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday
from 1 to 5 p.m.
The Great Read Away, which launched at the be-
ginning of June, comes on the heels of Amnesty
Month in May, during which time late fees for over-
due materials were waived.
Like the Great Read Away, Amnesty Month was
designed to encourage customers with overdue mate-
rials and outstanding fees to visit the library. The
excluded from the library due to difficulties with pay-
ing fees.
My highest priority is always making sure that our
resources are available to our community, and so if
there are ever fines or fees that are preventing people
from using the library, please come and talk to me,
Claremont Library Manager Amy Crow said in a pub-
lic comment during the June 13 meeting of the Clare-
mont City Council.
In addition to the Great Read Away, the Claremont
Library will be hosting a variety of free activities for
its younger customers throughout the summer. The li-
brary will have free childrens programs every
Wednesday at 2 p.m. and free programs for tweens
and teensfrom age 11 to age 18every Thursday at
2 p.m. through the end of July.
For customers of all ages, Claremont will have free
chess and checkers sets and refreshments available
every Tuesday at 2 p.m. through August 29. The li-
brarys Makermobile will also be at the library at 2
p.m. on July 15 and August 19 with robotics activities.

Babe, I love you

W
ith the recent death of my dear
friend, I have struggled to find
even a moment of peace in my
heart. This morning, as I carefully con-
sider my emotions, I return to the one
thing that has brought me solace in these
difficult daysmusic. Music has gra-
ciously provided a magic bridge back to
the many sleepovers, dance parties, con-
versations, travels, tears and laughter that
I shared with my sweet Joyce.
The capability to produce and enjoy music appears
in every human society. Around the globe we rely on
music to move us to tears, make us feel better, inspire
us, and evoke powerful memories. Evidence suggests
that the rhythm and rhyme of songs provide clues,
which trigger certain information from the hippocam-
pus and frontal cortex, two areas in the brain associ-
ated with memory.
Listening to music increases blood flow in the areas
of the brain that are involved in generating and con-
trolling emotions, which activate psychological func-
tions such as memory, attention and imagery. Rather
than tapping into explicit memory (that which in-
volves conscious recollection or recall), music opens

a pathway to implicit memoryknowledge that is not
consciously available. In other words, when we hear a
song, we dont deliberately process the words. In-
stead, we feel emotions, which unlock associated
memories.
Imagine trying to remember a summer day from
high school. It would be difficult to immediately re-
trieve a specific memory without probing questions
such as, What year was it? Who was I with? Did I
travel? However, if a popular song from that time pe-
riod were to play in the background, there is a good
chance it would serve as a time machine back to a
vivid memory of a particular day.
As for me, Wannabe by the Spice Girls takes me
back to a crowded Bali bar in 1999, where Joyce and
I locked eyes and headed to the dance floor when the
song began; Babe I Love You by Styx transports
me to Joyces large bed in college where we tickled

each others arms and cried about nothing (as college
girls sometimes do); Who Let The Dogs Out by the
Baha Men carries me to Little Tokyo where we snuck
beer into the Karaoke room and laughed until we
cried at two-year-old (diaper-clad) Diego repeatedly
rapping the song; and when I hear This Love I can
vividly remember the dance party in Jennifers living
room with our kids clamoring for Joyces attention.
According to one study in the Journal of Biology,
autobiographical information associated with music is
evoked not only when we hear music, but also when
we speak about episodes in our lives where music
played an important role.
Not only does hearing music associated with our
past evoke a strong feeling of knowing, but it also
helps to mold our own self-identity. This certainly ex-
plains why my friends and I have come together over
the past few days to sing, cry, listen to music and
retell stories.
I, for one, am eternally grateful to the immortalized
melodies of The BeeGees, Prince, Lionel Richie,
George Michael, Styx, Elton John, Paul McCartney,
David Bowie and yes, even the Back Street Boyz
(okay, just one song) for helping me to feel Joyces
head on my shoulder, remember the touch of her soft
skin, and imagine dancing with her as she throws her
head back in the middle one of her explosive laughs.

Dear Editor:
Over 10 million immigrants live, work
and pay taxes in California. They are our
family, our friends and our coworkers. Re-
cently, federal agents have taken actions to
detain and deport our law-abiding neigh-
bors, tearing families apart.
Undocumented residents are afraid to use
community resources or cooperate with law
enforcement for fear of deportation. Take
action to protect our immigrant families and
values.
A bill to create landmark protections for
immigrant families living in California has
passed the state senate and is now in the as-
sembly. Tell your representative to vote yes
on the California Values Act (SB 54).
This bill will make sure schools, health
facilities and courthouses are safe and ac-
cessible to all Californians and prevent law
enforcement from acting as federal Im-
migration and Customs Enforcement

to develop a vision of the
broader Claremont community
for the future of the Village
South.
A workshop is scheduled for next
Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to noon
at the Hughes Centers Padua Room.
The meeting will offer presentations,
group discussions, exercises and ex-
hibits. City staff will lead the workshop
with the consultant team headed by
Sargent Town Planning to present ini-
tial research on the site and gather resi-
dent feedback and ideas. A light

The plan is expected to include re-

The plan will also capitalize on the
sites location near Metrolink and fu-
ture Gold Line stations and seek to cre-
ate better auto, transit, pedestrian and
bicycle connections in the area.
City staff said the plan is likely to
take advantage of the sites proximity
to the Claremont Village by bringing in
similar development and amenities that
will extend the Village South to con-
nect to neighborhoods south of Arrow
Highway.

Greenacres has been called one of the most
impressive estates ever constructed. It was built on 15
acres and originally consisted of a 44 room mansion,
nine-hole golf course, numerous outbuildings and a
900-foot canoe run. The home was designed in an
Italian Renaissance/ Mediterranean Revival style that
was modeled after the Villa Palmieri in Florence,
Italy. The 45,000-square-foot-house was estimated to
have cost $2 million at that time.
Mr. Spaulding, in partnership with William Field
Staunton, Jr. and Walter I. Webber, designed the
Malaga Cove Plaza, a shopping center in the gated
community of Palos Verdes Estates from 1922 to
1924. They designed the fraternity house of Phi
Kappa Sigma located off the campus of UCLA in
Westwood, Los Angeles in 1929. From 1928 to 1930,
they designed the Clark Dormitory on the campus of
Pomona College.

John Leon Rex, they designed numerous projects and

Christine Thomas died June 28, 2017
at her home in Claremont. She was 70.
She was born to Stella and Peter Miller
in Webster, Massachusetts on January 22,
1947. After graduation from Bartlett
High School in Webster she went on to the
University of Michigan, where, as she was
fond of reminding her children, the only
class she didnt get an A in was calculus.
At Michigan, she was a member of the
ZTA sorority and earned a bachelors de-
gree in archaeology in 1968. In between
her junior and senior years she won an
award to work for a summer at Chicagos
Natural Science Museum, where she
helped pack, label and categorize the mu-
seums various artifacts.
Thereafter, the young student received
a scholarship to attend Louisiana State Uni-
versity, where she pursued her masters de-
gree in archaeology. At LSU she met her

soon-to-be husband, Lynn Thomas. The

her masters degree study, but married
Lynn in 1972. The young couple then
moved to Southern California, where Mr.

ish his PhD dissertation.
In 1976 Ms. Thomas gave birth to her
first child, Stephanie. In 1978, the fami-

Thomas briefly held a job at Claremont
City Hall as a typist. She left there and em-
barked on her 32-year career as a library
assistant at California Polytechnic Uni-
versity, Pomona. The family was com-

Ms. Thomas loved to read and knit, and
was especially fond of gardening. She was
fair and honest and always believed in do-
ing the right thing, her family shared. She
had a passion for ensuring other people
were treated fairly. These qualities are ex-

emplified in her 30-plus years with the
California State Employees Association,
where she worked in addition to her day
job at Cal Poly Pomona.
Ms. Thomas was predeceased by her
husband Lynn Thomas. She is survived by
her mother, Stella Miller; brother, Stephen
Miller; daughter, Stephanie Thomas Men-
doza; son, Robert Thomas; and her grand-
daughter, Elizabeth Mendoza.
A memorial will be held Saturday,
July 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Todd Me-
morial Chapel, 325 Indian Hill Blvd.,
Claremont. An additional memorial will
be held later this summer. She will be
buried at Saint Josephs Garden of Peace
Cemetery in Webster, Massachusetts.

Allen J. Hinand
Reverend, father, civil rights activist
Allen J. Hinand, livelong activist,
died June 18 at his home in Claremont.
He was 80. His wife Gail said the cause
was related to Multiple System Atro-
phy.
Born in 1937 in Great Falls and
raised in Butte, Montana, Mr. Hinand
graduated from Butte High School. He
then went to Linfield College in
McMinnville, Oregon, where he met
and married Gail Duerfeldt prior to re-
ceiving his BA degree.
Mr. Hinand graduated in 1963 from
Andover Newton Theological School
in Massachusetts with a master of di-
vinity degree, and was ordained to the
American Baptist Churches, USA.
From 1963 to 1974 Rev. Hinand was
co-pastor at Central Baptist Church in
Wayne, Pennsylvania. During his
tenure he founded an interracial nursery
school at the church, and was involved
in civil rights and social justice issues.
He participated in anti-Vietnam war ef-
forts through Clergy and Laity Con-
cerned Against the War in Vietnam.
Following Dr. Kings death, he was in-
strumental in founding the Martin
Luther King Fund to support The Op-

Beloved grandmother, proud German, world traveler
Eva Soelter, beloved oma, mom and
friend, died June 18, 2017 after a brief
struggle with pneumonia and lung dis-
ease. She was 83.
She was born February 7, 1934 in the
small village of Malitsch, in Silesia,
Eastern Germany and fled with her fam-
ily to escape the Russian occupation
after World War II. The family eventu-
ally settled in the town of Wittmund on
the North Sea coast in the Province of
Ostfriesland, Germany, where in her
early twenties she met the man who
would become her husband, Wilfrid
(Wil) Soelter.
She emigrated to Sault Ste. Marie,
Canada in 1955 to marry Mr. Soelter.
Soon they had two sons, Peter and Fred.
In 1961 the family emigrated from
Canada to Southern California, settling
in Ontario and later Upland, where she
loved her view of Mt. Baldy.

founded the Pennsylvania Clergy Con-
sultation Service on Problem Pregnan-
cies, the forerunner of the Religious
Coalition of Reproductive Choice, prior
to Roe vs. Wade.
From 1974 to 1981 Rev. Hinand was
associate executive director, then acting
executive director of American Baptist
Churches of Metropolitan New York.
Representing 194 churches in the five
boroughs of New York City and Long
Island, he led efforts to reconcile the
multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-
cultural churches, making this regional
office one of the most diverse, hetero-
geneous collaboratives in the country.
In 1981 Rev. Hinand became Presi-
dent and CEO of American Baptist Eld-
er Ministries of Massachusetts, retiring
as senior vice president of American
Baptist Homes of the West in 2002. He
was instrumental in co-founding, with
Youville Hospital, the Shepherds Cen-
ter of Cambridge and Somerville. Dur-
ing his tenure he also served on the
board and as president of Massachu-
setts Homes and Services for the Ag-
Ms. Soelter loved her family and
friends in Germany and Southern Cali-
fornia, in Upland and Vista, and at
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in
Claremont and Claremont Manor. She
especially loved going out for drives in
her Lincoln, even if just to In-N-Out
Burger or shopping, her family shared.
She made it her lifes mission to
maintain her relationships with her Eu-
ropean family and to pass the German
language and family connections on to
her children and grandchildren, all of
whom have visited with family in her
homeland and have welcomed German
relatives into their homes in Southern
California.
Ms. Soelter loved traveling and
cruises and visited all seven continents,
including her many trips home to Ger-
many. It was hard to name a country she
had not seen, her final adventure being a

ing, and as a member of House of Dele-
gates of the American Association of
Homes and Services for the Aging. He
also served on the board of the Ameri-
can Baptist Homes and Hospitals Asso-
ciation and represented them for eight
years on the General Board of Ameri-
can Baptist Churches, USA.
Since 2002 Dr. Gail Duerfeldt Hi-
nand and Rev. Hinand have been resi-
dents of Key West, Florida where he
was part of the ministry team of Metro-
politan Community Church. They also
lived at Pilgrim Place in Claremont.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Gail
Duerfeldt Hinand; his daughter Mar-
celle Hinand and son-in-law August
Kleinzahler, and grandchildren Duncan
and Jack Cady, of San Francisco; and
son and daughter-in-law Steven and
Ann Hinand of Washington State.

will be held July 15 at 1:30 p.m. at
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in
Claremont, with a reception following
at 3 p.m. at Manor Hall at Claremont

T heres nothing quite like a live performance, and theres something unique-
ly summer about watching Shakespeare under the stars.
The summer of 2017 marks the fourth year of the Midsummer Shakespeare
Festival, a Claremont tradition, produced by Ophelias Jump Productions in part-
nership with Pomona College. The festival is held at the beautiful Sontag Greek
Theatre on the campus of Pomona College from July 13-23.
The festival opens July 13 with Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Caitlin
Lopez, followed on July 14 with The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark,
directed by Beatrice Casagran. The two shows run on alternating nights Thurs-

day through Sunday with subsequent performances for
Much Ado on July 15, 21 and 23 and for Hamlet
on July 16, 20 and 22. All performances begin at 8 p.m.,
but patrons are invited to come early for picnicking and
special pre-show entertainment. Festival days will be
Saturday, July 15 and Saturday, July 23 with vendors
and entertainment beginning at 5:30 p.m. Concessions
are being sponsored by Claremont Craft Ales and Last
Name Brewing, and special picnic dinners are available
from several Claremont restaurant partners including
Packing House Wine Merchants, Sacas, The Cheese Cave and others. Tick-
ets are $25 general admission/$22 students & seniors, and are available on-

We were founded by artists and educators who believe that the purpose of
theatre is to create unending conversations and spark the imagination, says
founding artistic director Beatrice Casagran. We believe strongly in the com-
munal power of great stories, dramatic ideas and the
sincere engagement that audiences find in these the-
atrical events.
Now in its fifth season, Ophelias Jump has recent-
ly opened an intimate 49 seat theatre space on
Porterfield Way in Upland close to the Upland/Clare-
mont border. From this new base, Ophelias Jump
plans to continue their collaboration with community businesses and non-prof-
it groups to promote access to theatre and theatre education.
For the past 4 years Ophelias Jump has fostered emerging
young artists and theatrical technicians through its summer
theatre internship program for college and high school stu-
dents. This summer OJP launched its first Summer Shake-
speare Camp for young actors between the ages of 9 and 17.
The camp cohort of 13 enthusiastic Shakespearian scholars
have been learning about the tropes and conventions of
Shakespearian language, plot, and production. With the guid-
ance of their instructors, they are applying their learning to de-
vise a Shakespearian style play which they will perform as a Green Show be-
fore the opening night of Much Ado. Theatre uniquely combines every oth-

er art form music, conceptual art, movement, visual art, dance, sound, etc.,
says Founding Associate Artistic Director and Camp Lead Instructor, Caitlin
Lopez. We want to cultivate our community's cultural landscape by opening
access for youth to interactions with theatre as audience members, practitioners,
creators, and even critics.
In addition, Ophelias Jump promotes and workshops new works by talent-
ed young playwrights such as Desiree York whose play The Puppeteer was
workshopped and presented by OJP in 2015 as a staged reading before go-
ing on to receive the 2015 Kennedy Centers Rosa Parks Playwriting Award and
was most recently named as a finalist in 2017 Henley Rose Playwright Com-
petition.
During the past five years, we've brought the area some really great thought-
provoking theatre, including Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris, The Goat or Who
is Sylvia? by Edward Albee, and A Boston Marriage by David Mamet, Honky
by Greg Kalleres, Tribes by Nina Raines, and The Electric Baby by
Stephanie Zadravec to name a few, says Casagran. Some people ask if we
do comedies or dramas and my answer is yes. Our shows often arent easy
to categorize because life is not easy to categorize. Life is funny and sad and
complicated. I love shows that dont give you a bunch of pat answers. OJP
productions seek to raise questions and elicit dialoguethey invite audiences
to leap into the drama.
OJPs production of Hamlet takes place in 1919 and draws parallels between
the unsettled and quickly changing mood of the early 20th century and the cur-
rents of upheaval facing the 21st century world almost 100 years later. In our
production, Hamlet is 27 and is a
millenial of the 20th Century, ex-
plains Casagran. Set in a period
right after the First World War, dur-
ing the age of Prohibition, and lead-
ing up to the passage of Womens
Suffrage in the United States, this
was a time of transition. Though
the historical parallels serve as an
undercurrent, OJPs Hamlets an-
guish is very personal as he has to
deal with the struggle of rejecting

what he perceives as his parents
excesses and espousing new
ideals while also affirming his love
and attachment to the generation
that bore him. This production
looks to the past to speak power-
fully to todays audiences. As with
most of OJPs productions, impor-
tant questions are raised and the in-
vitation to search for answers is pre-
sented and left up to each audience member. The piece includes original live
music composed by Ophelias Jump Intern, Wilfredo Nazareno.
Much Ado is being staged as a beach-blanket-musical romp set in late 1950s
Hawaii. The highly energetic production features Vaudevillian style physical com-
edy and original music by Wilfredo Nazareno, including a crooning lounge singer
during the masquerade scene. Much Ado About Nothing is a wildly funny
rom-com Mad Men style.
The Midsummer Shakespeare Festival has found a home at Pomonas Son-
tag Greek Theatre for the past four years, a perfect setting for the local com-
munity to come together under the stars. Were pleased to host the Shake-
speare Midsummer Festival at the Sontag Greek Theatre. Its a beautiful out-
door venue completed in 1914 and renovated in 1997. When we started our
partnership with Ophelias Jump in 2014, it was the outdoor venues first ful-
ly produced theatrical production since the 1990s. says Karen Fagan, direc-
tor of events at the College. Pomona is committed to supporting the arts in
Claremont through partnerships like this.
Founded in 2012, Ophelias Jump has produced thought-provoking and con-
temporary plays, along with the annual Shakespeare festival. Ophelias Jump
has been the recipient of several Inland Theatre League awards recognizing

EXPANDED LIBRARY HOURS Clare-
mont Public Library recently added op-
erating hours. The expanded hours at the
library, at 208 N. Harvard Ave., are as fol-

5 p.m.; and Sunday: 1 to 5 p.m. The change
is part of a continued effort to eliminate bar-
riers to library use and increase access to

cent, at locations throughout its service

evolved and are being used by our cus-
