A Research Paper on Blood Donation

Voluntary blood donation is an activity where an individual gives part of their

blood to a blood donation bank, or a hospital is an emergency case where a patient is in

need of additional blood. Many people have donated blood during their lifetime. It is

important that everyone understands the importance of blood donation, and his or her

role in giving blood[CITATION Law13 \p 11 \l 1033 ]. Blood donation is important as it

guarantees the sustenance of anothers individuals life.

Blood exists in a variety of blood types. These include A, B, AB and O. The

transfusion of donated blood is a complex process, as various variables concerning the

blood type have to be considered. The O negative blood is a universal donor. It is often

given to all patients in need of blood before their blood type is determined. It is often in

high demand as it can assist many patients. Furthermore, it is often in short supply. The

AB positive blood type is a universal receiver (WHO 9). The person can receive blood

from donors of all blood groups. The AB-positive plasma can be given to people from all

blood types. It is common or patients who have lost a lot of blood, for newborns and

emergencies.

It is imperative that a blood donor is tested before donating blood. In this regard,

blood donation allows the donor to know their health status. It is to ascertain the safety

of the donated blood. A physician or a nurse carries out the tests before and after the

donation. It is done to ensure that the blood is free from any infectious diseases such as

Hepatitis A and B, Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) among others[CITATION

Dou00 \p 77 \l 1033 ]. Through testing, the spread of infectious diseases from the donor

to the beneficiaries is avoided.

Some individuals cannot donate blood. These individuals are under the age of 16

and those over the age of 70. Furthermore, a person can only give blood once every 56

days. An individual who is suffering from an infection or has taken any medication within

the past two days cannot give blood. It is to ensure that the blood is not contaminated

with a disease or medication. A person should also be over 50 kilograms before they

can donate blood[CITATION Law13 \p 32 \l 1033 ].

Blood serves a variety of purposes in the body. Blood is part of the bodys

circulatory system. It is essential for the sustenance of life. Loss of blood in the body

can lead to death. The composition of blood includes red cells, white cells, plasma, and

platelets. Each of these constituents plays a variety of functions in the body[CITATION

Dou00 \p 22 \l 1033 ]. Specifically, blood is essential for the proper functioning of the

body.

Blood plays an integral role in the oxygenation of the body. Moreover, it supplies

nutrients to the tissues, transports hormones, and removes waste. Additionally, blood

plays a significant role in the maintenance of body temperature and pH. It is vital to

ensure a balance in the body, and the sustenance of life[CITATION Den12 \p 101 \l

1033 ].

Individuals can require blood due to a variety of reasons. Blood donation is

standard for patients with sickle cell anemia, burn victims, and other blood conditions

such as Leukemia. Furthermore, people suffering from cancer also require a blood

transfusion[CITATION Mic11 \p 59 \l 1033 ]. Patients who lose blood after surgical

procedures like heart transplant or accidents will also require blood to replenish their

system.

Blood donation helps patients in need of blood. It ensures that their blood supply

is back to normal. Many patients will require blood that is more than one unit. It means

that blood donors ensure the survival of such patients[CITATION Dou00 \p 89 \l 1033 ].

For instance, an accident victim could require more than 100 units of blood, yet a

person can only donate a single unit of blood.

Blood donation can ensure the survival of a patient. It will ensure that the patient

is stabilized, and can regain their health quickly. In many cases, loss of life often occurs

after loss of blood. Furthermore, blood cannot be manufactured. It is a social

responsibility for everyone to donate blood[CITATION Dou00 \p 33 \l 1033 ].

Family members are often the first option for giving blood to patients in need. It

arises from the shortage of specific blood types in blood donation centers. Moreover,
Surname 5

centers[CITATION Law13 \p 98 \l 1033 ]. It also acts as an opportunity for them to

understand the importance of donating blood.

The lack of blood in donation centers is a common occurrence. Hospitals and

other health organizations rely on the blood donation centers for blood. These are

organizations where blood donors donate blood. The centers test the blood and store it

(WHO 67). Additionally they make a repository of the various blood types that have

been donated.

Many people are encouraged to donate blood. The donation centers often make

announcements to encourage people to give or when a particular blood type is required.

Crisis-driven blood donation has also been eliminated by these centers. Initially, the

centers would make calls for blood donation during emergencies. Many issues often

characterized crisis-driven blood donations, as the blood was often unsuitable. It arises

when the donor decline to record their real medical history. Testing blood is a time-

consuming process[CITATION Dou00 \p 45 \l 1033 ]. Without accurate data, it is hard to

ascertain the safety of donated blood.

Commercial blood donation centers have been closed. It arises from the high

number of contaminate blood donated. Moreover, people in need of money often refuse

to disclose their medical history. In this regard, the blood donated will often have

infections, and will be unsuitable[CITATION Mic11 \p 118 \l 1033 ].

Blood donation centers often experience a lack of blood supply. It arises from the

low turnout rates for blood donations. Many people are not aware that they can donate
Surname 6

blood or the importance of blood donations. Essentially, few people go to donation

centers to donate voluntarily. In the end, the blood donation centers often experience

the lack of blood supply[CITATION Den12 \p 201 \l 1033 ]. Additionally, blood is

essential in many hospitals. Many patients require a blood transfusion, which means

that blood donation centers often have to meet a large demand for blood yet they lack

the supply.

Blood donation drives are a common occurrence. This is done to meet the

demand for blood in donation centers. Blood donation drives are often carried out by

organization such as the American Red Cross and government hospitals. These drives

often encourage people from all occupations to donate blood. Additionally, the

organizers visit corporate premises, businesses, schools, and universities to encourage

people to donate blood[CITATION Law13 \p 113 \l 1033 ]. It also acts as an opportunity

for people to learn about blood donation and their role in society as blood donors.

Blood donation day is an event to celebrate blood donors. It occurs on 14 June.

The day focuses on thanking people who donate blood. Blood donation is importance,

and everyone who is over 16 years of age should be encouraged to donate. The blood

donation day celebrates blood donations, and acts as a day to donate blood. Moreover,

donation is a life-saving activity and is carried out by humanitarian individuals who

should be emulated by the larger society.

The process of donating blood is simple. A person donates about half a pint of

blood (500ml) per session. A man has about 8 pints and woman has about 5 pints.

Specifically, the donated blood is replenished within hours after donation. The process

takes about 10 minutes. The process first begins with registering. After that, the donor

then provides details about their medical history. A mini-physical exam is then carried

out to ensure the donor is physically healthy and can donate blood. Finally, the actual

donation occurs. Blood donation consists of several types. These are whole blood,

platelets, double red cells, and plasma[CITATION Mic11 \p 122 \l 1033 ]. Whole blood

donation is common. The other types of blood donation involve separating blood from

its components using a process known as apheresis.

Blood donation is not a dangerous process. Actually, it is a healthy process as

blood donation leads to reinvigoration of the donor. Once the donor gives blood, the

body is refilled with fresh and new blood. It means that blood donation does not lead to

lose of blood in the donor. Moreover, blood donation fosters unity and love within a

community (WHO 12). The act of donating blood is simply a show of love for

humankind.

of life of many patients in hospitals who require blood. Blood is tested before transfusion to the
recipient. Many blood donations centers carry out donation drives to encourage people to donate blood.
