Paper Code: MS L08-New Subject: Business Research

Time: 3 Hours Maximum Marks: 60

Note: Q. 1 is compulsory. Attempt any Five questions in all.

Q. 1. Answer in brief any Five of the following: (4 x 5 )

(a) List the various steps in undertaking a Scientific Research.
(b) For the following indicate the scales in which the measurement is
made.
(i) whether the tourist will visit resort or hot
(ii) understanding the preference for different investment options
(iii) measuring the amount of coffee a household drinks in a month
(iv) measuring income group to which an individual belongs
(c) Distinguish between 'concepts' and 'constructs' with examples.
(d) Distinguish between 'sampling units' and 'sample frame".
(e) List the necessary conditions that are required to be fulfilled in order
to study any cause and effect relationship.
(f) Discuss ethical considerations that needs to be kept in mind while
collecting data.
(g) List the various multivariate techniques that you have studied into
dependent and interdependence techniques.

Q. 2. Explain what is meant by Literature Review? Why is it considered as a

first step in the research and explain its use. (10)

Q. 3. (a) Explain the characteristics of a good hypothesis. Explain why the

research question is always kept as an alternative hypothesis instead
of a null hypothesis.
(b) Explain the various steps in Hypothesis testing using an example. (5x2)

1 P.T.O,
Q. 4. (a) A Likert scale is considered as an Uni-dimensional scale. What is
meant by Uni-dimensional? How can we infer that a set of statements
that measures a single construct in a Linkert scale is uni-dimensional.
(b) Explain the different ways which measure the internal Con istency
of a scale. (5x2)

Q. 5. (a) It is said that Stratified sampling procedure results in lower error than
that of Simple Random Sampling. Explain how this is so?
(b) A production department is producing back cover for watches which
is manufactured by a stamping process. Each back dial on a average
must be 35 mm in diameter and in order to fit into the watch should
be within an error of 0.07 mm. The standard deviation of the
diameter of the dials is known to be within 0.35 mm. What sample
size should be adequate if the quality control engineer wants to
maintain a confidence level of 99%. (Z for 99% confidence = 2.58).(5x2)

Q. 6. Write short note on any Two of the following:

(a) What is data coding and data editing?
(b) How is a research proposal different from a research report?
(c) Explain how to evaluate the validity of an instrument? (5x2)

Q. 7~ A large bus manufacturer tested two different types of engines in their
buses and has gathered the following random samples of the mileages per
litre. A hypothesis test was carried to understand whether the two engines
give similar mileages per litre of fuel.
