INFORMATIVE SPEECH PLAN

Title: Erwan Heussaffs One-Week Cycle Menu

Specific Speech Purpose: To inform my Comm III audience about the nutritional implications
of the one-week cycle menu prepared by food blogger and fitness enthusiast Erwan Heussaff.
Statement: The meal plan prepared by Erwan Heussaff has different nutritional implications that
may affect the health of an individual.

INTRODUCTION

I. Attention Step: In the Philippines, three out of ten or 31.1% adult Filipinos aged 20 years old
and above are either overweight or obese with a Body Mass Index greater than or equal to 25
according to the 8th National Nutrition Survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research
Institute (FNRI) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) last 2013. In the
same survey, it was determined that there has been an increasing trend from 1993 to 2013 in the
prevalence of overweight or obese adults. In addition, poverty incidence in the country was
estimated at 21.6% last 2015 according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). These given
data can be used to come up with ways to improve the health of Filipinos through food given
constraints. Such ways can be meal plans with calculated macro and micronutrients with a given
budget to combat malnutrition and poverty. Erwan Heussaff took on the challenge and created a
one-week cycle menu complete with nutrient calculations and a budget of Php 150 per day.

II. Clarification Step: Despite his efforts in creating a meal plan to provide healthy meals for
Filipinos within a budget, there are nutritional considerations that he overlooked. This speech
will inform you about the nutritional implications of the meal plan that he created and his role in
the health of different individuals.

BODY

I. Erwan Heussaff is a known personality with him being a food blogger and fianc of actress
and host, Anne Curtis.

A. He has a great number of followers on social media accounts such as Twitter and
Instagram with 644 thousand followers and 1.3 million followers respectively.

1. With the number of followers he has, one can say that he can influence a large
number of people in modifying their diets since a study has shown that celebrities
have a positive influence in product switching behavior of individuals, which
implies that celebrities impact decisions of people.
2. Social media is a great factor to the spread of misconceptions and false
information about nutrition since anyone can post unrestricted and unscholarly
writings without legitimate sources.
B. According to his blog The Fat Kid Inside, he did not undergo the required education
to become a Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian (RND).

1. He read books on nutrition and exercise, and created his own meal plan to lose
weight.
2. He used his knowledge to create the one-week cycle menu he presented on social
media.
3. Only RNDs are licensed to plan and calculate the dietary prescription of clients.

II. The one-week cycle menu he created has different nutritional implications.

A. In planning a meal, the dietary prescription should be computed, which is

individualized per person.

1. The dietary prescription calculates for the energy and macronutrient intake of the
client, which depends on his/her actual or desired body weight. This makes the
dietary prescription individualized.
2. Once computed, the food exchange list (FEL) can be used to translate the
prescription into exchanges and distribute to different food groups. This can be
used as a guide on how much food per group the individual should consume to
acquire the prescribed energy and macronutrients. The food exchanges can then
be distributed per meal pattern such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.
3. After finalizing the distribution, the exchanges can be translated into actual food
items, and their nutrients can be determined by using the Food Composition
Tables (FCT).
4. The nutritional adequacy of these items should be evaluated using the
Recommended Energy and Nutrient Intake (RENI) and Philippine Dietary
Reference Intakes (PDRI) values to determine if the meal planned meets the
recommended nutrients.
5. In the meal planned by Heussaff, he showed the amount of calories,
macronutrients, cholesterol, sodium, sugar, and fiber, but he did not show the
percent adequacy of the meals and his sources on where he got the nutrient values
of his food items.

B. Some food items in his meal plan may not be suitable for Filipinos, while some may
play a role in acquiring diseases.

1. The staple food of Filipinos is known to be rice. In some food patterns, rice
was not evident; the carbohydrate source was changed into either oatmeal or
sweet potato.
2. Three eggs a day totals into 21 eggs per week. This increases the risk of
cardiovascular diseases (CVD) due to the large consumption of cholesterol.

C. In the meal plan he presented online, Heussaff did not include household
measurements of the food items, which can be disadvantageous since not all
individuals have dietetic scales they can use to weigh the ingredients.
CONCLUSION

Summary Step: Erwan Heussaffs one-week cycle menu is well within the Php 150 budget, but
overlooked several nutritional considerations. Now that you know the nutritional implications of
his meal plan and what social media can do to disseminate information despite it being incorrect,
I hope that you would seek a RND if you want a meal plan of your own, and take time to verify
information you see online.
