Subject: Project 4- Modest Booklet
Date: Friday, April 21, 2017

The attached portfolio features my work for project four, a modest booklet. Included, you will
find an inspiration collage, a few rough drafts, and a final draft. In this memo, I provided a
rationale for my design choices.

Purpose:
For project 4, I was given the challenge of creating a modest booklet. This modest booklet is
composed of a very small collection of my favorite quotes form Dr. Maya Angelou. The purpose
of this booklet is to share with other quotes that have inspired, motivated or encouraged me.
Through this modest booklet, I hope the reader gains a sense of encouragement and motivation.
Through reciting each quote or reading each to themselves, I hope the reader feels rejuvenated.
The primary users of this document will be myself as well as my professor. This modest booklet
will be used in my graduate portfolio and potentially as an example for future document design
students. If this book is used as an example for future students, the purpose of this booklet shifts
to being a learning model. At this time there is no specific employer or client that needs to be
satisfied with this project, besides my professor and myself. This modest booklet will be used in
the context of the classroom and to demonstrate my document design skills.

Description of Audience:
Anyone that is able to read and comprehend messages will be able to gain a benefit from reading
this booklet. Many people are familiar with Dr. Maya Angelou or at least her works, and should
be able to connect to what she is saying on some level. The potential users of this booklet besides
my professor and myself, may be future students of this course. In order for this booklet to be
considered successful, readers should have a fairly easy time navigating through the booklet and
comprehending what is being read. Working through the booklet should be fairly easy as well.
The users should not have to worry or be bothered with small issues like the staple coming out or
uneven pages.

Context and Design Constraints:

From the example provided by the assignment sheet, this modest booklet should model the
example provide din many ways. For one, the size of the booklet should be 4.5in (width) by
6.5in (length). This booklet also needed to have at least six pages. With this criteria, my first step
was to make sure that my document settings were correct. Using Adobe InDesign, I was able to
set my documents page width and length. Once I finalized the topic for this booklet, I had
already decided that most of the images I wanted to include would be in black and white, so
deciding on colors and things of that nature were more or less secondary. I knew that I at least
wanted the cover to be printed in color and maybe even the photo at the end. I wanted each back
to be as parallel as possible, copied the layout for each page that had a quote. The only aspect of
design constraint that existed was the deadline. Understandably, though, this project was meant
to be a lighter load of work than what we had completed earlier in the semester, which in the end
it was. Thankfully, there are no contextual challenges that aroused during the completion of this
project.

Design Rationale:
Since I had changed my projects topic three times, but had completed storyboards for each idea,
once I settled on the final topic I hit the ground running, so-to-speak. My main goal was to find
images that of Dr. Angelou that fit my overall design idea. I wanted to make sure that the image
related to the quote, and that they work well with each other as much as possible. That way
readers could also see the relations and make another connection to what they are reading.
Because this project was to be sort of a low-maintenance type of project (hardest part was
figuring out the layout, the text was simple copy and paste) selecting the quotes that stood out the
most for me, and that I thought would help inspire others, was the next task. I had viewed a
documentary on Dr. Angelou a few weeks ago, and after watching it I researched some of her
quote and save them in my phone. With that in mind, I already had a jump-start on collecting
quotes, it was then a matter of choosing the ones I likes most.
This document will be used in both print and digital format. So the idea of using mostly black
and white images works perfectly, if one wants to be economical and it also helped during the
draft printing phase. Each page is uniformed with the next so readers know what to expect. Dr.
Angelous quote at the top of the page, an image of her in the middle, followed by my
interpretation or a songs lyrics. Because this is a modest booklet I wanted to keep things quite
simple. Just as Taft has argued, words are the easiest way to explain what something is, so I start
the booklet by informing readers of hat they are about to read or view.

Design Evolution:
My first objective for this project was to gather quotes that inspired, motivated and encouraged
me and would hopefully in turn, inspire, motivate, and encourage others. Once I had the quotes
selected, I needed to find images that seemed to relate to the quote. I created a story board also,
which helped to give me a preview of the basic layout of each page. At first I wanted the entire
image to cover each page and the quotes to be placed on top of the image. But through the peer
review session, I was informed that some of the images were too busy and they overshadowed
the text. So I decided to just place the images in the center for each page. Through my usability
testing, I learned that for one of the quotes, the corresponding song lyrics did not fit the overall
theme of the booklet, and it was suggested that I find another song lyric that would work better
with the theme of the booklet. I believe the final version of the booklet is definitely better
because of the suggested revisions. Through working on his document I have gained a better
understanding of why less is more. Though I had several topic ideas in the beginning, knowing
the additional amount of work that I would have had to complete in order for them to be as
complete and successful as this final version, and considering the time constraint, I dont believe
I would have been able to produce as good of quality document if I had gone with some of my
first topic ideas. Nonetheless I am satisfied with the final version and believes that it will serve
its purpose.
