Removal and Installation

Removal
WARNINGS:

To avoid accidental deployment, the air bag c ontrol module backup power supply must be
depleted. Wait at least one minute after disconnec ting the battery ground c able(s) before
c ommenc ing any repair or adjustment to the supplemental restraint system (SRS), or any
c omponent(s) adjac ent to the SRS sensors. Failure to follow these instructions may result in
personal injury.

Always wear safety glasses when working on an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling
an air bag module. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

To minimize the possibility of premature deployment, do not use radio key c ode savers when
working on the supplemental restraint system. Failure to follow this instruction may result in
personal injury.

To minimize the possibility of injury in the event of premature deployment, always c arry a live
air bag module with the bag and trim cover pointed away from the body. Failure to follow this
instruction may result in personal injury.

To minimize the possibility of premature deployment, live air bag modules must only be placed
on work benches which have been ground bonded and with the trim c over facing up. Failure to
follow these instruc tions may result in personal injury.

Never probe the elec trical connec tors of air bag modules or any other supplemental restraint
system component. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

Painting over the driver air bag module trim cover or instrument panel could lead to
deterioration of the trim c over and air bag modules. Do not for any reason attempt to paint
disc olored or damaged air bag module trim covers or instrument panel. Install a new component.
Failure to follow this instruc tion may result in personal injury.
1. Disc onnect the battery ground c able.
For additional information, refer to: Battery Disc onnect
and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables,
General Proc edures).

2. NOTE: Turn the steering wheel to ac cess the


steering c olumn upper shroud retaining clips.
Detach the steering column upper shroud from the
steering c olumn lower shroud (steering wheel removed
for c larity).
1. Using a thin bladed sc rewdriver, release the two
clips (one each side).
2. Detach the shroud.

3. NOTE: Turn the steering wheel to access the air bag


module retaining c lips.

Using a thin bladed screwdriver, detac h the driver air
bag module upper c lips from the steering wheel (driver
air bag module removed for clarity).

4. Detach the driver air bag module from the steering


wheel.
1. Pull the top of the air bag module away from the
steering wheel.
2. Push the air bag module upwards to detac h the
lower retaining clips.

5. Disconnec t the driver air bag module ground


c onnector.

6. Remove the driver air bag module.


Disc onnect the driver air bag module elec trical
connec tor.

Installation

CAUTION: Make sure that the driver air bag module retaining c lips are correctly engaged and
the trim c over is flush with the steering wheel.
1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
