MUSI 6345: Liszt, Midterm Exam: Review Sheet

The Midterm Exam is scheduled for October 12. It will cover all of the material listed on
the class syllabus, sessions 1-14, except for Totentanz.

Part I: Listening
8 listening examples, each worth 5 points (40 points)
1. one title; 2. one genre; 3. decade; 4. historical context; 5. stylistic features
Each example will be approximately 1 minute long.
Each example will be played once followed by a one-minute pause.
All the examples will then be played in order without pause.

Part II: Short IDs

8 terms, places, people, etc., each worth 6 points (48 points)
For each ID: Define or identify the term, place, person, etc. AND associate
it/him/her with one title, genre, decade, historical context, stylistic features.

Part III: Essays, 2 questions, each worth 20 points (40 points)

Take-home essay questions are due October 12. A hard copy is due at class time.
Also save both essays in one file and submit it via the turn-it-in link in
Blackboard by class time.

Essay 1: In an essay of 750-1000 words, discuss the following cluster of

questions:

What circumstances and people contributed to Liszts development into a virtuoso

of formidable technical accomplishment at an early age?
What influences (again, plausibly, circumstances, compositions, and people) were
responsible for transforming him from a merely brilliant technician into an
artist-poet of the piano?
And how are these two sets of circumstances evident in some of the compositions
he wrote in each of these phases or facets of his career?

Essay 2: In an essay of 750-1000 words, discuss various musical topics or

semiotic conventions in the relevant compositions on the course syllabus. Are
all of the relevant compositions programmatic in some way, or are there
some that are abstract? What subjects did Liszt choose to depict? What
musical conventions and techniques did he use to depict them?
