Did you know? That each year there
are many requests made for the county to pave
dirt roads in the county? The county has money
allocated for such requests.
Did you realize that the neighbor who built
within the setback rule, just now made it so that
your road cannot be paved because the home-
owner took it upon themselves to violate distance
setbacks for the right of way? Code enforcement
is a joke for if the project is done before a citizen
complains they do not pursue remedy to make
them compliant? How is that working?
Shouldnt there be fines or them to be forced to
remove the building from within the right of way
set forth by the county in the first place?
Voice your opinions for change to this for it will
only become a growing problem if others choose
to build upon ROW areas. So as new residents
move in they will never enjoy a non-dirt dusty
road. Approach the county for a hearing to
change the ordinance. We have known of several
places where this will affect homeowners on
county roads in the future, if not already.

while records are still a small part of the market, the fact
that in 2016, "a format nearly a century old generated 3.6
percent of total global revenues is remarkable," as NPR's
Andrew Flanagan has reported.
Years of double-digit growth in record sales have left vinyl
press plants in the U.S., Japan and elsewhere struggling to
meet demand. Sony's plan reportedly includes the possibil-
ity that it will press records on contract. Here's what a then
-28-year-old record store customer told NPR about the
format's appeal, back in 2014: "The way I consumed music
has been so instant and so immediate, especially with
Spotify and online streaming services,". "I kind of just
want to go back to the way I used to listen to it as a kid."
Sony has already installed record-cutting equipment at a
Tokyo studio and will start pressing records again in the
spring of 2018 nearly three decades after it made its last
in-house vinyl back in 1989. "Cutting is a delicate process,
with the quality of sound affected by the depth and angle
of the grooves," Nikkei reports, "and Sony is scrambling to
bring in old record engineers to pass on their knowledge."

Lee Langford and
Emma Sledge
Langford.
Mrs. Norris was a
resident of Freeport,
Florida. She was
Baptist by faith, and
a loving wife,
mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She enjoyed taking trips to Biloxi, Mississippi
and loved spending time with her family.
Mrs. Norris was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Ausley Norris; two
brothers, Wayne Langford and Homer
Langford Jr.; one sister, Blonnie B. Hamilton,
and one daughter-in-law, Judy Lindsey Cook.
Mrs. Norris is survived by her daughter; Janice
McLean and husband Billy of Freeport,
Florida; son, Curtis Cook Jr. of Freeport,
Florida; two step sons, Wesley Norris of
Naples, Florida, and Chester Norris of
Tuscaloosa, Alabama; one sister in law, Robbie
Langford of Copperas Cove, Texas; four grand-
children; Carrie Bryant (Gary), Chris Jones
(Alice Harris), Kevin Cook (Tori), Kim Hughes
(Terry); and nine great grandchildren; Dusty
Bryant, Zack Bryant (Wendy), Kayla Bryant,

3,200 years after it was destroyed by
ancient Egyptians
Archaeologists in Israel discovered the ancient bodies in the biblical city of Gezer,
more than 3,000 years after its destruction by ancient Egyptians.
The 33-acre Tel Gezer archaeological site is located in the foothills of the Judean
Mountains in central Israel and continues to fascinate experts. The ancient city of
Gezer is mentioned in the biblical account of King Solomons fortifications, as well
as in several ancient Egyptian and Assyrian texts.
Excavations this summer revealed the
remains of three people in a building
destroyed by an ancient Egyptian
army. This past season we uncovered
a building dating to the end of the
13th century BC that was violently
destroyed, explained Prof. Steven
Ortiz, Professor at the Tandy Institute

The destruction is associated with the Merneptah campaign, when the Egyptian
Pharaoh Merneptah attacked Gezer, according to Ortiz, who co-directed the
excavation with Samuel Wolff of the Israel Antiquities Authority. At the time of the
attack, Gezer was part of the ancient Canaanite civilization. The Israeli website
Haaretz reports that the remains of two adults and a child, the latter wearing earrings,
were discovered in a building in the south of the ancient city.
One adult and the child were found under a 3.3-foot layer of ash and burnt bricks in a
room of the building, according to Haaretz. The adult, who was so badly burnt that
the sex could not be determined, was lying on its back with its arms above its head.
Other artifacts found in the room include a table, storage jars, a grinding stone and a
large earthenware jar.
The skeletal remains of the second adult were found beneath rubble in another room
within the complex, Haaretz reports. Other items in that room included a 13 th century
B.C. amulet and cylinder seals.
The finds, Ortiz says, show the importance of the ancient city of Gezer and provide
evidence of Egyptian military campaigns
at the end of the late Bronze Age. The
city was strategically located at a crucial
crossroads guarding the pass from the
coast up to Jerusalem.
The Tandy Institute for Archaeology has
made 10 excavations at the site, starting
in 2006, and uncovered a King Solomon-
Era palace last year.

Golfers Elbow

Golfer's elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis, is caused by damage to the muscles and
tendons that control the wrist and fingers. The damage is typically related to excess or repeated
stress especially forceful wrist and finger motions. Improper lifting, throwing or hitting, as
well as too little warm-up or poor conditioning, also can contribute to golfer's elbow.
Despite the name, people who do not play golf can also suffer from the same problem. Tennis
and other racket sports can lead to problems. Excessive topspin can hurt the elbow. Using a
racket that is too small or heavy also can lead to injury.
Improper pitching technique in baseball or softball can be another culprit. Football, archery and
javelin throwing also can cause golfer's elbow. Even lifting weights, using the wrong technique,
such as curling the wrists during a biceps exercise, can overload the elbow muscles and tendons.
Any activity that requires repeatedly bending and straightening the elbow can cause golfer's
elbow. This includes painting, raking, hammering, chopping wood, using a computer, doing as-
sembly-line work and cooking. A day or two of yardwork or cooking for company usually won't
cause golfer's elbow, though. The activity generally needs to be done for more than an hour a day
on many days to cause a problem.
Too much of these activities too often can cause pain where the tendons of the forearm muscles
attach to the bony bump on the inside of the elbow. The pain might spread into the forearm and
wrist. The pain of golfer's elbow can come on suddenly or gradually.
The pain might worsen when a person swings a golf club or racket, squeezes or pitches a ball, shake hands, turns a doorknob, lifts weights or flexes the wrist.
The sooner treatment begins, the sooner one can return to normal activities. First, rest. Put the golf game or other activities on hold until the pain is gone. To return to activity
too soon, can make it worse.
Apply ice packs to the elbow for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, three to four times a day for several days. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever and use a brace. Stretch and
strengthen the affected area. Your physician may suggest stretching and strengthening exercises. Physical or occupational therapy can be helpful, too.
Golfer's elbow does not mean a person must abandon the sport. Rest and appropriate treatment can usually get a person back into the swing of things. When the pain is
gone, gently practice the arm motions of the sport or activity and make adjustments if needed. Slowly and gradually return to normal activities.
Most people will get better with rest, ice and pain relievers. Know when to rest. Try not to overuse the elbow and at the first sign of elbow pain, take a break. For more in-

Now there's a new self-defense product that puts more bang into your pepper spray.
It's the Defender 24/7, an all-in-one camera, oscillating flash, siren and pepper spray
that connects to a 24/7 alert service through a smartphone app, activates with the push
of a button and is small enough to hang from a keychain."There's a violent crime in
the United States about every 25 seconds," McManus said, a statistic confirmed by
the 2010 FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program.
"And with one in five women experiencing
sexual violence while in college, personal
safety is a major concern," he added.
"When someone is walking alone after dark
by themselves, they're vulnerable and they
need something that's proactive to help them
not only to protect themselves but to alert
anyone that might be able to help them,"
McManus said.
McManus got the idea for the Defender when
a loved one went to college and he wondered
if there was something she could carry that
was better than a Taser or pepper spray.
"Nothing like this had ever been created," he
said. "What we decided to do was combine
personal protection, security response, and immediate alert into a single device that
would work with your smartphone, something that everybody was [already]
carrying."
To activate the device's pepper spray, camera, flash, siren and alert system, you
simply press a button. Using Bluetooth, the Defender connects to your GPS-enabled
smartphone and transmits your location to a monitoring center, which contacts law
enforcement and "provides all of the critical information they need to be able to
respond quickly and to the exact spot where you are," McManus said.
The alarm can alert bystanders to a person in trouble, and the camera helps victims
provide details of their attacker(s).
"Other self-defense devices on the market require trade-offs," McManus said. "You're
either going to have self-defenseor you're going to have a loud alarm or you're
going to have monitoring support. But you're not going to have everything."
He said the device could even enhance the 911 system: "With a device like Defender
24/7, whether it's for safety or for medical, we'll know exactly where somebody is to
be able to provide fast and accurate response."
The Defender app also includes notification of family and friends if a medical or
safety alert goes off. "Your loved one, your spouse, your friend, they can get a notice
to know immediately when an incident happens," McManus said.
Defender users can test the device and become familiar with it by using a water vapor
cartridge instead of one that contains pepper spray. And the device is re-usable, not
disposable. It can be charged at home, just like a smartphone, and Defender will
replace a used pepper spray canister with a refilled one.

Americas first smart city is Columbus, Ohio the fastest-growing city in the
Buckeye State and the second largest city in the Midwest, after Chicago.
Now, with $40 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation and
another $10 million from Vulcan Inc., a company founded by Microsoft billionaire
Paul Allen, Columbus The Crossroads of Ohio is poised to become the
blueprint for the future of urban planning.
And what, exactly, is a smart city? Its a buzzword, says Jordan Davis, director of
smart cities at the Columbus Partnership. What a smart city is, is not yet to be
defined.
But given the enormity and ambiguity of creating one, Davis and her colleagues are
focusing on one thing at a time, starting with transportation. Columbus (pop. 860,090)
experienced a worrisome increase in traffic congestion and car accidents as its popu-
lation grew 1 percent last year, but Davis has no plans to add more highway lanes or
parking garages. Shes not focusing on how many people are getting around, but how
theyre getting around.
Mobility and transportation result in hundreds of deaths a year in our city, Davis
said. If we can improve how people get around, well save peoples lives.
That means using integrated data exchange (IED), which will collect data from
sensors installed on traffic lights and from other databases; analyze the data to
determine which intersections are prone to accidents and which streets are frequently
blocked off; and then alert drivers, or even vehicles, accordingly.
It also will also look for parking solutions, because the Smart City Challenge report
estimates that 30 percent of urban traffic is caused by drivers looking for parking
spaces. One suggestion is to develop technology that will inform drivers of available
parking locations and tell them the safest route to get to them.
But drivers in Columbus, and in the rest of the country, are causing problems far
worse than traffic congestion. Ninety-five percent of traffic accident fatalities are the
result of human error, says Doug Marsden, former chief technology officer at
Transportation Research Center Inc. With 35,000 accidents occurring every year in
the U.S., Columbus hopes to achieve a future that takes people out of the drivers
seat. And its not alone: 53 of the 78 cities that competed in the Smart City Challenge
proposed implementing dedicated short-range communication (DSRC), which uses a
special frequency that allows vehicles to communicate directly with one another, in
their proposals.
One of the biggest issues today is when the car is making a left-hand turn and they
cant see another car coming at them, says Carla Bailo, assistant vice president of
mobility research and business development at Ohio State University. Vehicles
equipped with DSRC can avoid such T-bone collisions, even if the driver doesnt
see the other vehicle, because his vehicle knows its there and will not accelerate.
Columbus is asking drivers to sign up for the connected vehicles initiative on its
website.
When I say safety, its not just for the car and the driver, said Bailo, explaining that
the goal is to prevent accidents from occurring in the first place. Radar and cameras
installed for cars will be able to distinguish between living things and inanimate
objects. A camera-oriented collision avoidance system will alert city bus drivers to
pedestrians and pets. Enhanced LED streetlights in residential neighborhoods will
make driving safer at night. And theres more, though most of the Transportation
Departments initiatives for the city wont be launched until late next year. Improving
traffic conditions in commercial areas is also critical. Plans call for real-time
scheduling of downtown deliveries in order to minimize congestion. Long-haul truck
drivers will benefit from both an interstate truck parking platform designed to help
them find parking and from platooning connecting long-haul trucks on Greater
Columbus freeways so they can travel together. This will reduce fuel emissions,
something the Columbus Smart City plan takes very seriously.
The plan also calls for introducing 780 electric vehicles into the citys public and
private sectors by 2020, implementing automated shuttles and creating a system that
adjusts speed limits in conditions like inclement weather.
The public is encouraged to be part of the planning process by providing innovative
ideas, but be forewarned: Anyone thats bringing new technology to the Smart
Columbus area will need to prove it out first in a safe and secure facility, Marsden
said.
Several other major cities will be watching to see the effectiveness before they begin.
