1.0 GeneralInformation

1.1Description

TheLABGARDESModelNU430LaminarFlowBiologicalSafetyCabinet(LFBSC)isabench/tabletopmodel,optionally
availablewithabasesupportstand,foroperationasaconsolemodel.TheLABGARDESmodelNU430utilizesanEnergy
SaverDCECMmotoroptimallydeterminedforwardcurvedfanforeachmodelsize/widthtomaximizebothenergy
efficiencyandfilterloadingcapacity.TheEnergySaverECMmotoriscontrolledtoairflowsetpointsviaasolidstateDC
motorcontrollerwithdigitaldualthermistorairflowsensorsthatprovideanautomaticcompensation(constantvolume
control)forbothfilterloadingandlinevoltagevariances.

TheLaminarFlowBiologicalSafetyCabinet,(LFBSC)isaproductresultingfromthedevelopmentofthe"laminarflow"
principleandtheapplicationofenvironmentalcontrolsasrequiredinthefieldofbiologicalresearchorchemical
containment.TheLFBSC,whenusedwithpropertechnique,isaneffectivelaboratoryaidinobtainingtheoptimumcontrol
overproductqualitywhilereducingthepotentialforexposureofbothproductandpersonneltoairbornebiologicalor
particulatechemicalagentsinlowtomoderateriskhazardresearchanddrugpreparationorproductoperations,as
prescribedbytheCenterforDiseaseControl(CDC)Atlanta,Georgia.

TheNU430BenchLFBSCmeetstherequirementsofaClassII,TypeB2sincethecabinetconformstothefollowing
requirements:

- Maintainaminimumaverageinflowvelocityof100fpm(0.51m/s)throughtheworkaccessopening;

- HaveHEPAfiltereddownflowairdrawnfromthelaboratoryortheoutsideair(i.e.downflowairisnotrecirculated
fromthecabinetexhaustair;

- Exhaustallinflowanddownflowairtotheatmospherethroughahardconnectiontothefacilityexhaustsystemafter
filtrationthroughaHEPAfilterwithoutrecirculationinthecabinetorreturntothelaboratory;

- Haveallcontaminatedductsandplenumsundernegativepressureorsurroundedbydirectlyexhausted
(nonrecirculatedthroughtheworkarea)negativepressureductsandplenums.

TypeB2cabinetsmaybeusedforworkwithnonflammableorexplosivevolatilechemicalsandradionuclidesrequired
asadjunctstomicrobiologicalstudies.

1.2SafetyInstructions
ThesesafetyinstructionsdescribethesafetyfeaturesoftheLABGARDESModelNU430LFBSC.
Thesafetycabinethasbeenmanufacturedusingthelatesttechnologicaldevelopmentsandhasbeenthoroughlytested
beforedelivery.However,thecabinetmaypresentpotentialhazardsifitisnotinstalledandusedasinstructedforits
intendedpurposeoroutsideofoperatingparameters.Therefore,thefollowingproceduresmustalwaysbeobserved:
Thesafetycabinetmustbeoperatedonlybytrainedandauthorizedpersonnel.
Foranyoperationofthiscabinet,theoperatormustprepareclearandconcisewritteninstructionsforoperating
andcleaning,utilizingapplicablesafetydatasheets,planthygieneguidelines,andtechnicalregulations,in
particular.
o Whichdecontaminationmeasuresaretobeappliedforthecabinetandaccessories?
o Whichprotectivemeasuresapplywhilespecificagentsareused?
o Whichmeasuresaretobetakeninthecaseofanaccident?
Repairstothedevicemustbecarriedoutonlybytrainedandauthorizedexpertpersonnel.
Keeptheseoperatinginstructionsclosetothecabinetsothatsafetyinstructionsandimportantinformationare
alwaysaccessible.

3.0 Warranty

NuAire,Inc.warrantsClassII,TypeB2w/ECMMotor(LABGARDES)thatitwillrepairF.O.B.itsfactoryorfurnishwithout
chargeF.O.B.itsfactoryasimilarparttoreplaceanymaterialincludingsupplyHEPAfilter(excludingexhaustHEPAfilter)in
itsequipmentwithin60monthsafterthedateofsaleifprovedtothesatisfactionofthecompanytohavebeendefective
atthetimeitwassoldprovidedthatallpartsclaimeddefectiveshallbereturned,properlyidentifiedtothecompanyatits
factory,chargesprepaid.Factoryinstalledequipmentoraccessoriesarewarrantedonlytotheextentguaranteedbythe
originalmanufacturer,andthiswarrantyshallnotapplytoanyportionoftheequipmentmodifiedbytheuser.Claims
underthiswarrantyshouldbedirectedtoNuAire,Inc.settingforthindetailthenatureofthedefect,thedateoftheinitial
installationandtheserialandmodelnumberoftheequipment.

ThiswarrantyshallnotapplytoanyNuAireproductorpartthereofwhichhasbeensubjecttomisuse,abuse,accident,
shippingdamage,improperinstallationorservice,ordamagebyfire,floodoractsofGod.Iftheserialnumberofthis
productisaltered,removedordefacedastobeillegible,theWarrantyshallbenullandvoidinitsentirety.

Thewarrantyisforthesolebenefitoftheoriginalpurchaserandisnotassignableortransferable.Priortoreturningany
item,foranyreason,contactNuAireforaReturnAuthorizationNumber.Thisnumbermustaccompanyallreturns.Any
productshippedtoNuAirewithoutthisnumberwillbereturnedrefusedshipmentorcollectfreight.

4.0 Shipments

NuAiretakeseveryreasonableprecautiontoassurethatyourLABGARDEScabinetarriveswithoutdamage.Motorcarriers
arecarefullyselectedandshippingcartonshavebeenspeciallydesignedtoinsureyourpurchase.However,damagecan
occurinanyshipmentandthefollowingoutlinesthestepsyoushouldtakeonreceiptofaNuAireLABGARDEScabinetto
besurethatifdamagehasoccurred,theproperclaimsandactionsaretakenimmediately.

4.1 DamagedShipments

4.1.1 Termsarefactory,unlessstatedotherwise.Therefore,itisimportanttocheckeachshipmentbeforeacceptance.

4.1.2 Ifthereisvisibledamage,thematerialcanbeacceptedafterthedrivermakesanotationontheconsignee'scopy
ofthefreightbill.Thenaninspectionmustbemadetoverifytheclaimagainstthecarrier.Thisinspectionisthe
basisofyourfilingtheclaimagainstthecarrier.

4.1.3 IfconcealeddamageisfounditisabsolutelynecessarytoNOTIFYTHEFREIGHTAGENTATONCEandrequestan
inspection.Withoutthisinspection,thetransportationcompanymaynotacceptaclaimforlossordamage.Ifthe
carrierwillnotperformtheinspection,anaffidavitmustbepreparedstatingthathewascontactedonacertain
dateandthathefailedtocomplywiththerequest.Thisalongwithotherpapersinthecustomer'spossessionwill
supporttheclaim.

5.0 InstallationInstructions

5.1 Location
Withinthelaboratory,pharmacy,etc.,theideallocationofthebiologicalsafetycabinetisawayfrompersonneltraffic
lanes,airvents(inorout),doorsand/oranyothersourceofdisruptiveaircurrents.


















Ifdraftsorotherdisruptiveaircurrentsexceedtheinflowvelocityofthecabinetthroughtheaccessopening,thepotential
existsforcontaminatedairtoexitorentertheworkzoneareaofthecabinet.Itdependsontheseverityoftheaircurrent.
REMEMBER:ABIOLOGICALSAFETYCABINETISNOSUBSTITUTEFORGOODLABORATORYTECHNIQUE.

Wherespacepermits,aclear6inch(152mm)areashouldbepermittedoneachsideofthecabinetformaintenance
purposes.Theelectricaloutletintowhichthecabinetisconnectedshouldbereadilyaccessibleformaintenancepurposes.
Donotpositionthecabinettopreventaccesstothepowercord.Thepowercordplugservesasthedisconnectand
shouldremainreadilyaccessible.Iftheoutletisinaccessible,suchasaconduit(hardwired)connection,thenanappropriate
warninglabelshouldbeappliednearthecabinet'son/offswitch,toindicatethecircuitbreakeronthepowerdistribution
paneltobeused.

Morethananyotherbiologicalsafetycabinet,theNU430requirescarefulsiteplanningandpreparation,duetothetotal
exhaustnatureofthecabinet.Propersizingoftheexhaustandmakeupsupplysystemsarecriticaltothesuccessful
installationofthecabinet.Inaddition,thecabinetprovidesforthechoiceofmakeupairforthesupply(downflow)air.

5.2 SetUpInstructions
Removeoutershippingprotection(cartonorcrating).Thecabinetisfastenedtothebaseskidanditisusuallythebest
proceduretoleavetheskidinplaceuntilthecabinetislocatedinitsapproximatepositiontofacilitateeaseinhandling.
Itcanthenberemovedfromtheskidbyremovingthebandingholdingthecabinettotheskid.Itmaybenecessaryto
removetheControlCenterinordertogainpassagethroughadoorway.Itmayeasilyberemovedbyfollowingthe
instructionsondrawingBCD11817.

Itisrecommendedthatnolessthantwopeoplearepresentusinga
! CAUTION liftingsystemforplacementofthecabinetontothebasestand.
Itisnotrecommendedtomanuallyliftthecabinetontothebasestand.

5.2.1 BaseStandAssembly
ThebasestandisshippedknockeddowninaseparatecartonandisassembledperdrawingBCD05147if
accompaniedwiththecabinet.Removethebandingholdingthecabinettothebaseskid.Liftthecabinetfrom
thebaseskidandplaceonthefloor.Nowliftthecabinetontopofthebaseandboltthebasestandtothecabinet
usingtwo3/8"16x3/4"boltsandwashersprovidedforthefrontbasestandtabsandtwo1/4"acornnutsfor
therearweldstuds.Placethecabinetinitsdesiredlocation.

Thebasestandstoragecabinetswillusuallybeshippedaccordingtocustomerrequirements.Ifitisshipped
unassembled,itcanbeassembledperdrawingBCD05146.Itisrecommendedthattheupperandlowerbase
standbracesbeinstalledfirst,thentherearandbottompanels(theendpanelsarealwaysprefastened).Once
assembled,fastenthecabinetpertheaboveinstructions.

Removethecapprotectingthedrainvalvethreadsandinstallthedrainvalve,onthebottomrightfrontofthe
cabinetusingLoctite242furnishedtothethreadsandrotatethevalvebodyuntilitissecure(SeeBCD11815).

5.2.2 Leveling
Usingalevelplacedontheworktray,adjusttheleglevelers,first,endtoendthenfronttoback.
TheNSFapprovedleglevelersprovidea3/4"(20mm)adjustment.

5.2.3 BenchInstallation(BCD11815)
Placethecabinetonthebenchwithapproximatelya2"(51mm)overhangclearanceforinstallationofthedrain
valve.Ifthedrainvalveisnotdesired,capwith3/8NPTfittingandplacethecabinetinitsdesiredlocationand
usingRTVcaulk,sealallaroundthebaseofthecabinetandthebench.Thisprovidesatightsealtopreventbench
spillsfrommigratingunderthecabinet.

Ifadrainvalveisdesired,(NOTE,CHECKWITHYOURSAFETYPERSONNELFORREQULATORYREQUIREMENTS(i.e.
LOCKINGTYPE)OFDRAINVALVEINSTALLATION)removethehandlefromthevalvestemtogainclearancefor
valvebodyrotation.AddLoctite242(furnished)tothethreadsandrotatevalvebodyuntilsecure,withthevalve
stem(forhandle)ontheleftside.Reinstallhandletovalvestem.Adjustthecabinetonbenchtoprovidea
11/2"(38mm)overhangandsealtheinterfaceofthebenchandcabinet,usingRTVcaulkasabove.

5.2.4 GasService
NuAiredoesn'trecommendtheuseofnaturalgaswithintheLFBSC,butifgasserviceisdeterminedtobe
necessaryfortheapplication,appropriatesafetymeasuresmusttakeplace.AllNuAireLFBSC'shaveprecautionary
warninglabelsthatsaythefollowing:

Useofexplosiveorflammablesubstancesinthiscabinet
CAUTION
! shouldbeevaluatedbyyourappropriatesafetypersonnel.

Oncetheappropriatesafetypersonnelhavemadethedetermination,theapplicationofnaturalgasmust
beperformedinaccordancetonational,stateandlocalcodes.ITISALSOSTRONGLYRECOMMENDEDTHATAN
EMERGENCYGASSHUTOFFVALVEBEPLACEDJUSTOUTSIDETHELFBSCONTHEGASSUPPLYLINE.

AllNuAireLFBSC'smeetthesafetyrequirementsofULandCSAforLaboratoryEquipment.Tocomplywiththese
safetyrequirements,NuAireusesonlycertifiedgasvalves.Inaddition,ifexternalpipingisrequired,onlyblack
pipeisusedforthisapplication.

AspreviouslystatedNuAiredoesn'trecommendtheuseofnaturalgaswithintheLFBSCandASSUMESNO
RESPONSIBILITYFORITSUSE.USEATYOUROWNRISK.TheBunsenburnerflamewithintheLFBSCnotonly
contributestoheatbuildup;isalsodisruptsthelaminarairstream,whichmustbemaintainedformaximum
efficiency.IFTHEPROCEDUREDEMANDSUSEOFAFLAME,ABUNSENBURNERWITHONDEMANDIGNITIONIS
STRONGLYRECOMMENDED.DONOTUSECONSTANTFLAMEGASBURNERS.Duringuse,theBunsenburner
shouldbeplacedtotherearoftheworkspacewhereresultingairturbulencewillhaveaminimaleffect.

5.2.5 PlumbingServices
Serviceballvalveswiththetypeofservicespecifiedbytheremovablebuttononthehandlearelocatedinthe
workzone.Theserviceballvalvesarenotrecommendedforpressureover75p.s.i.(5.2BAR).Reducingvalves
shouldbeinstalledexternaltothecabinetifnecessary.Serviceballvalvesshouldneverbeusedforflammable
gassesoroxygenservice.Aspecialneedlevalveforoxygenserviceorcertifiedvalveisrequiredandavailableupon
request.

Externalconnectionisto3/8inchNPTcouplingintheinnersidewalls.Connectiontoplantutilitiesshouldbe
madewithpropermaterialsfortheindividualserviceandaccordingtoNationaland/orLocalcodes.Observeall
labelspertainingtothetypeofserviceandoperatingpressure.

Remotecontrolledneedlevalveplumbingfixturescanbeoptionallyprovidedwithintheinteriorsidewalls.Control
handlesarelocatedexternallyontheverticalairfoil.Serviceoutletswithintheinteriorhaveserratedtapered
fittingsdesignedforhoseconnectionswiththeremotecontrolledneedlevalveplumbingfixtures.NuAireprovides
forrear,bottom,ortopconnectionsofplumbingservicestoplantutilities.Connectionfromtheneedlevalve
assemblytotheweldedexitcouplingisaccomplishedwiththesupplied3/8inchsoftcoppertubingasstandard
(alternativematerialstomeetlocalcodesareavailableuponrequest).Theneedlevalvesarenotrecommended
forworkingpressureinexcessof125p.s.i.(8.6BAR).

5.2.6 ElectricalServices
TheNU430seriesBiologicalSafetyCabinetsmaybe"hardwired"(optional)orpluggedintoanoutletwith
protectiveearthingconnectionwiththestandardpowercord.Thecabinetrequires115VAC,60Hzsinglephase
(correctratingvariespercabinetsize,referenceElectrical/EnvironmentalRequirements).Itisrecommendedthat
powertothecabinet,whetherhardwiredorplugconnected,beonitsownbranchcircuit,protectedwithacircuit
breakeratthedistributionpanelnearthecabinet.Asurgeprotectorisstronglyrecommendedifyouare
experiencingpowerrelatedfaults.

PLEASENOTETHISCABINETCONTAINSELECTRONICBALLASTSFORTHEFLUORESCENTLIGHTING.ELECTRONIC
BALLASTSOPERATEWITHHIGHINRUSHCURRENT.ITISNOTRECOMMENDEDTOUSETHISPRODUCTWITH
GROUNDFAULTCIRCUITINTERRUPTERS(GFCI'S)BECAUSETHEBALLASTSMAYCAUSETHEGFCITOTRIP.

5.2.7 Exhaust/SupplyDuctInstallationGuidelines
Theexhaust/supplysystemsmustprovideconditionssimilartothatunderwhichthecabinetwascertifiedtomeet
itsstatedperformance.Thefollowingguidelinesshouldbeobservedwheninstallingexhaust/supplyairductwork
foreitherexistingplantexhaustsystems,oranewexhaustsystem.
1. Adequateroommakeupairinflowtoreplaceexhaustedair.Airdiffusionrateisnottoexceedvelocityof
100LFPM(.51m/s)tominimizedisruptiveaircurrents.Iflaboratoryistobepressurized,follow
guidelinesinANSI/AIHAZ9.5LaboratoryVentilation.

newexhaustsystem(i.e.ductdiameter,lengthandnumberofelbows,etc.).

6.1.7 NightSetback(Optional)

Theoptionalnightsetbackfeatureisusedtoreducetheexhaustairvolumeduringnonusageperiodsresultingin
conditionedairenergysavings.Forthenightsetbacktooperate,acontrolvalvemustbeinstalled(i.e.NU951
012motorizedairtightbutterflyvalve)toprovidethemeansforreductionofexhaustairflow.

Thenightsetbackisinitiatedbyeitherclosingthecontactsonthemaincontrolboardorenablingthenight
setbackicononthedisplay.Ifbothareused,thecontactsonthemaincontrolboardhavepriorityoverthedisplay
icon.Oncethecontactisclosedoriconispressedtheinternalblowerandfluorescentlightswillbeturnedoffand
remaininoperable.Theexhaustvalvewillbeclosedtoapercentageoftheoriginalsetpointtypicallytomaintaina
minimumof100fpm(.51m/s)andthedisplaywillindicatenightsetbackactive.Theslidingwindowcanbeclosed
andtheUVlightturnedonifinstalled.

NOTE:IfnightsetbackexhaustairflowisreducedbytheBuildingAutomationSystem(BAS)andnotbytheNuAire
ModelNU951012valve,itwouldstillberecommendedtousethecontactsonthemaincontrolboardtoinitiate
thenightsetbackoptiontodisplaynightsetbackactive,inhibitexhaustalarms,fluorescentlightandinternal
blower.

6.1.8 RemoteOverride(Optional)

Theoptionalremoteoverridefeatureisusedtoremotelycontroltheoperationifthecabinet.Atypicalapplication
wouldbeinaBioSafetyLevelthreefacilitythathadaroomexhaustsystemfailure.

Thefailuremodecouldsignaltheremoteoverridecontactstocloseandnotallowanyusageofthecabinet.Once
theremoteoverridecontactsareclosed,theinternalblowerandfluorescentlightswillbeturnedoffandremain
inoperable.Ifanexhaustmotorizedairtightbutterflyvalve(NU951012)ispresentthevalvewillclosetosealor
optionallyfullyopentheexhaustsystem.

ThedisplaywillindicateRemoteOverrideActive.Oncetheremoteoverridecontactsarebroken,normal
operationwillresume.

Cabinet(LFBSC)tocontrolairbornecontaminantsoflowtomoderateriskasstatedinTechnicalReportNo.FPS
56500000001preparedbyDowChemicalU.S.A.fortheNationalCancerInstitute,May1,1972.

ProcedureprotocolsdefinedintermsofthebarrierorcontrolconceptsuniquetoLFBSCmustbedevelopedinorderto
obtainamaximumpotentialforsafetyandprotection.Thepreplanningnecessarytodeveloptheseprotocolsisbasedon
severalfundamentalconsiderations,eachofwhichwillcontributetooptimumbenefitsfromtheequipment:
a. Knowyour"SafeWorkArea"
b. Minimizedisruptionof"aircurtain"
c. Minimizeroomactivity
d. Utilizeunidirectionalairflow
e. Employaseptictechniques

6.2.1 KnowYour"SafeWorkingArea"
TheLFBSCsafeworkingareaisbasicallytheworktrayordepressedarea.Allworkshouldbeperformedonor
abovetheworktray.Theareaonorabovethefrontgrillisanonsafeworkingarea.

NOTE:Itisimportanttomaintainanairgaponbothsidesoftheworktraybeforefasteninginplace.
Theworktrayasbeingpartofthecabinethasbeendesignedtoloadupto100lbs.(45.4kg.)ofwork
materials.Anyadditionalloadingshouldbeevaluatedbyappropriatesafetypersonnel.










6.2.2 MinimizePenetrationof"AirCurtain"
Theminimumnumberofitemsnecessaryshouldbeplacedintothecabinettopreventoverloading,butthework
shouldalsobeplannedtominimizethenumberoftimesanoperator'shandsandarmsmustenterandleavethe
aircurtainattheopenface.Theidealsituationistohaveeverythingneededforthecompleteprocedureplacedin
thehoodbeforestarting,sothatnothingneedpassinoroutthroughtheairbarrieratthefaceuntiltheprocedure
iscompleted.Thisisespeciallyimportantinworkingwithmoderateriskagents.

Unnecessaryrisingofthehandsinsidethecabinetabovetheleveloftheworkopeningshouldbeavoided.This
presentsaninclinedplanefromhandstoelbowsalongwhichthedownflowofairmayrunto,andpossiblyout,the
openface.

NOTE:Whenworkingwithagentsoflowerrisk,itisnotasimportantforallmaterialstobeplacedinthe
cabinetbeforestarting,orfortheproceduretobecompletelyfinishedbeforematerialsareremoved.
Also,thetimeperiodforacabinetmaybecontinuedoveramoreextendedperiodduringwhichentries
andwithdrawalsfromthecabinetmaybemade.

6.2.3 MinimizeRoomActivity
Activityintheroomitselfshouldbeheldtoaminimum.Unnecessaryactivitymaycreatedisruptiveaircurrentsas
wellasinterferewiththeworkoftheoperator.Apersonwalkingpastthefrontofacabinetcancausedraft
velocitiesupto175fpm(.89m/s),whicharesufficienttodisrupttheairbalanceofthelaminarflowcabinet.

6.2.4 UtilizeUnidirectionalAirflow
Theoperatormustkeeptwoimportantfactsinmind:(1)Theairassuppliedtotheworkareathroughfiltersfrom
thetop,iscontaminantfreeand(2)Airbornecontaminationgeneratedintheworkareaiscontrolledbythe
unidirectionalflowofparallelairstreamsinatoptobottomdirection.

Asolidobjectplacedinalaminarairstreamwilldisrupttheparallelflowandconsequently,thecapabilityof
controllinglateralmovementofairborneparticulates.Aconeofturbulenceextendsbelowtheobjectand
laminarityoftheairstreamisnotregaineduntilapointisreacheddownstream,approximatelyequaltothreeto
sixtimesthediameteroftheobject.Withintheparametersofthiscone,particlesmaybecarriedlaterallyby
multidirectionaleddycurrents.

Transferofviablematerialsandmanipulations,whichmaygenerateaerosols,shouldnotbeperformedabove
sterileoruninoculatedmaterials.Itemsshouldbelocalizedontheworksurfacein"clean"and"dirty"groups.

6.2.5 EmployAsepticTechnique
Theoperatormustnotassumeanattitudeof"letthecabinetdoit"whenperformingprocedureswithinaLFBSC.
Properlybalancedandproperlyusedcabinetswilldoanexcellentjobofcontrollingairbornecontaminationand
containingviableagents,butthecabinetwillnoteliminatecontacttransmissionofcontamination.Normal
laboratorycontaminationcontrolproceduresandbasicaseptictechniquesarenecessarytoobtainmaximum
benefitfromthecabinet.Forexamples,openbottle,tubeorflaskmountsshouldbekeptasparallelaspossibleto
thedownflowtominimizecaptureofchanceparticulates.Thisprecautionismerelyanextensionofgoodaseptic
techniqueaspracticedonopenbenchtops.Thegoodlaboratorypracticesdesignedtominimizecreationand/or
releaseofaerosolstotheenvironmentshouldnotbediscontinued.

Itemsofequipmentindirectcontactwiththeetiologicagentmustremaininthecabinetuntilenclosedoruntil
surfacedecontaminated.Traysofdiscardpipettesmustbecoveredbeforeremovalfromthecabinet(aluminum
foilmaysubstituteforfabricatedcovers).

Ifanaccidentoccurswhichspillsorsplatterssuspensionsofetiologicagentaroundtheworkarea,allsurfacesand
itemsinthecabinetmustbesurfacedecontaminatedbeforebeingremoved.

Applyingaburnerflametoflaskandtubeneckswhenmatingsurfacesofsterileassembliesisaconventional
methodofminimizingchancecontamination.However,theefficiencyofthisoperationisusuallyrelatedtothe
removalofairbornecontaminationoccurringwhiletheitemisuncovered.Ifthemanipulationiscarriedoutinan
environmentfreeofairborneparticulates,thentheneedfortheflamingoperationisessentiallyremoved.
ThisisoneoftheadditionaladvantagesoftheLFBSCuseofthegasburnerisseldomnecessary.

Thegasburnerflameinoneofthesecabinetsnotonlycontributessignificantlytotheheatbuildup;italso
disruptsthelaminarairstreams,whichmustbemaintainedformaximumefficiency.IFTHEPROCEDURE
DEMANDSUSEOFAFLAME,ABUNSENBURNERWITHONDEMANDIGNITIONISRECOMMENDED.DONOTUSE
CONSTANTFLAMEGASBURNERS.Itshouldalsobeonlyusedfromthecenteroftheworksurfacetotheright
rearwhereresultingairturbulencewillhaveaminimaleffect.DONOTUSEGASBURNERONTHELEFTOFTHE
WORKSURFACEDUETOITSINFLUENCEONTHEELECTRONICAIRFLOWCONTROLSYSTEM.Ifcabinetairis
inadvertentlyturnedoff,theflamecoulddamagetheHEPAfilters.

6.3 OperatingSequence

6.3.1 StartUp
Turnoncabinetblowerandlights,checkairintakeandexhaustportalsofthecabinettomakesuretheyare
unobstructed.Theelectronicairflowcontrolsystemwillautomaticallycontrolairflowstospecifiedsetpoints.

NOTE: Somecabinetsareequippedwithultraviolet(UV)lights.Goodprocedureincludesthedecontaminationorwipe
downofcabinetsurfaceswithchemicaldisinfectantbeforeworkcommences.Thispracticeeliminatestheneed
forUVlights,whoseprimaryutilityinthisapplicationisinactivationofsurfacecontaminationsincethefilters
effectivelyremoveallairbornecontaminants.UVlights,therefore,arenotrecommendedintheLFBSC.

Allowblowerstooperateforaminimumof15minutesbeforeasepticmanipulationsarebeguninthecabinet.If
thefilteredairexhaustedfromthecabinetisdischargedintotheroom,asinsomeinstallations,anadditional
advantageisobtainedfrompurification(filtration)oftheroomaircirculatedthroughtheequipment.Becauseof
thischaracteristiccontributingtothequalityofthelaboratoryenvironment,someownersofLFBSC'sleavethemin
operationbeyondthetimeofactualuse.

6.3.2 Wipedown
Theinteriorsurfacesoftheworkspaceshouldnextbedisinfected(seecleaningprocedures)bywipingthem
thoroughlywith70%alcoholorsimilarnoncorrosiveantimicrobialagents.USEOFCHLORINATEDORHALOGEN
MATERIALSINTHECABINETMAYDAMAGESTAINLESSSTEEL.

6.3.3 Materials&Equipment
Theapparatusandmaterialsshouldnextbeplacedintothecabinet.Caremustbeexercisedthatnoitemsare
placedoverthefrontintakegrills.Materialsshouldbearrangedsothat,clean,dirty,(used),andvirusmaterials
arewellseparated.Passageofcontaminatedmaterialsoveruninoculatedculturesorcleanglasswareshouldbe
avoidedandtransferofviablematerialsshouldbeperformedasdeeplyintothecabinet(awayfromopenface)as
possible.

6.3.4 AirPurge
Additionalpurgingoftheworkspacewithoutuseractivityshouldbeallowedfor23minutesaftermaterialsand
apparatuseshavebeenplacedinit.Thiswillridtheareaofall"loose"contaminationthatmayhavebeen
introducedwiththeitems.

6.3.5 PerformWork
Theworkcannowbeperformed.Thetechnicianperformingtheworkisencouragedtowearalongsleevedgown
withknitcuffsandrubbergloves.Thiswillminimizethesheddingofskinfloraintotheworkareaandconcurrently
protectthehandsandarmsfromviableagentcontamination.Ataminimum,thehandsandarmsshouldbe
washedwellwithgermicidalsoapbeforeandafterworkinthecabinet.ForthepreparationofAntineoplastic
drugs,thefollowingproceduressummarizethosecontainedinOSHATechnicalManualTED10.15A,SectionVI,
Chapter2ControllingOccupationalExposuretoHazardousDrugs.Theabovedocumentshouldbethoroughly
studiedandreviewedpriortodrugpreparationinthecabinet.Itmaybefoundatthiswebsite.

c. Beforeopeningampoules,careshouldbetakentoinsurethatnoliquidremainsinthetipoftheampoule.

d. Finaldrugmeasurementshouldbeperformedpriortoremovingtheneedlefromthestopperofthevial.
e. Anonsplashcollectionvesselshouldbeavailableinthebiologicalsafetycabinettodiscardexcessdrug
solutions.

6.3.6 TerminalPurging&Wipedown
Followingcompletionofwork,allowthecabinettorunfora23minuteperiodwithoutpersonnelactivitytopurge
thecabinet.Thedecontaminationoftheinteriorsurfacesshouldberepeatedafterremovalofallmaterials,
cultures,apparatuses,etc.Acarefulcheckofgrillsanddiffusergridsshouldbemadeforspilledorsplashed
nutrients,whichmaysupportfungusgrowth,andresultingsporeliberationthatcontaminatestheprotectedwork
environment.

6.3.7 PaperCatch/Prefilter
Apermanentpapercatchisinstalledbehindthereardividerpaneloftheworkzone.Thisareaformsthereturnair
pathtothemotor/blower;andiftheairflowisblocked,itcouldseriouslyaffecttheperformanceofthecabinet.
Therefore,THEPAPERCATCHSHOULDBECHECKEDANDCLEANEDNOLESSTHANAWEEKLYBASIS;DAILYbasisif
proceduresdictatetheuseofpaperproducts.AnypaperremovedmustbeproperlydisposedofasContaminated
HazardousWaste.Theaboveproceduresalsoapplytoallcabinetsconfiguredwithaprefilter.

6.3.8 ShutDown
Turnoffblowersandlights.Donotusecabinetasadepositoryforexcesslabequipmentduringperiodsofnon
operation.IfAntineoplasticagentsarebeingpreparedinthecabinet,itisrecommendedtoletthecabinetrun
24hoursperday.Thislessensthepossibilitythatcontaminantsmayescape.

6.4 Ergonomics
Ergonomics,thestudyoraccommodationofworkpracticesisextremelyimportantforpropercabinetusageanduser
healthandsafety.Anevaluationofnormalworkpracticesshouldbeperformedwitheachuserwhenworkinginacabinet.
Evaluationcriteriashouldbeataminimum:
a. Properuserposture
b. Effectiveworkzonelayoutforworkpractice
c. Visionorsightlines
Foreachoftheaboveevaluationcriterion,severalaidsmaybesuppliedtoaccommodatetheuser.
ErgonomicchairAsixwayarticulatingseatandbackcontrolforpersonalizedadjustmenttoassureproperuser
posture.Besurefeetarerestingonthefloor,chairfootsupportorfootrest.Alsobesurebackisfullysupported
withproperchairadjustments
Forearm/armrestsupportThecabinetisprovidedwithaforearmsupportontheworkaccessopening
Periodicminibreaksduringworkpracticeshouldbetakenrestingforearmtoavoidstressandfatigue
EffectiveworkzonelayoutAlwaysprepareyourworkproceduretominimizereachtoavoidneckandshoulder
stressandfatigue.Rotatingtablesareoptionaltomaximumworkzoneandminimizereach
VisionandsightlineAlwaysprepareyourworkproceduretoeliminateglareandbrightreflectionsonthewindow.

6.5 CleaningProcedures
Cleaningthecabinetisanimportantfunctionintermsofbothcontainmentandsterility.Usethefollowingprocedureto
effectivelycleanorsurfacedisinfectthecabinetworkzonesurfaces.
a. Raisetheslidingwindowtoafullopenposition,ifdesired.
b. PresstheAUDIBLEALARMSILENCEorCLEANINGKEYonthefrontcontrolpaneltosilencetheaudiblealarmduring
thecleaningprocess.
c. Applyappropriatedisinfectingsolutiontocabinetsurfaces.Mostsurfacedisinfectantsrequireaspecificcontact
timedependinguponthemicrobiologicalagentsusedwithinthecabinet.CONSULTAPPROPRIATEDISINFECTANT
DOCUMENTATIONFORPROPERAPPLICATIONANDSAFETYPRECAUTIONS.

CAUTION:DISINFECTANTSTHATUSECHLORIDESANDHALOGENSWILLCAUSEDAMAGETOTHESTAINLESS
STEELSURFACESIFLEFTONFORLONGPERIODSOFTIME.

d. Afterthespecifiedcontacttime,wipeupexcessdisinfectant.IFTHEDISINFECTANTUSEDCONTAINSCHLORIDES

6.6.1 Preparation
Priortobeginningdecontaminationactivity,personnelshouldwearproperpersonnelprotectionequipment(PPE)

i.e.Tyvek isolationgown,2pairofNitrileglovesandafullfacedHEPAfilteredrespirator.Allprotectivegarments
shouldbecontainedin4milplasticbagsandlabeledfordisposalaschemotherapywasteaftercompletionofthe
procedure.Forthepurposeofthisprocedure,detailedproceduresforcleaningaClassIILFBSCcanbefoundin
the2006ASHPTechnicalAssistanceBulletinASHPGuidelinesonHandlingHazardousDrugs2.

6.6.2 Procedure
a. Makesurethatthecabinetremainsinoperationalmodewithinternalbloweron.
b. Openthehingedorslidingviewscreenandsecureinthefullopenposition.

Withtheviewscreeninthefullopenposition,personnelprotection
! CAUTION iscompromisedandafullfacedHEPAfilteredrespiratormustbeworn.

c. Cleanallreadilyaccessiblesurfacesofthecabinet.
d. RemoveperforatedmetaldiffuserscreenfromtheundersideofthesupplyHEPAfilterandplaceonthe
cabinetworktray.

NOTE: Dependingonthemodel,thediffuserscreenissecuredtothecabinetby#832screwsor1/4"20acorn
nuts,3places.Itispurposelyatightfitandissecuredtothebackwallwithprojectingthreadlessstuds.

e. Cleanbothsidesoftheperforatedmetaldiffuserscreenandremoveitfromthecabinet.
f. Liftthecabinetworktray,cleanbothsidesandremoveitfromthecabinet.
g. Removethefrontperforatedgrill,placeonthecabinetfloorandcleanbothsides.
Removefromcabinet.
h. Cleanworktraysupports.
i. Workingfromtoptobottom,cleanallinsidesurfacesofthecabinet.
TakecarenottowettheHEPAfilter.
Ifliquidhascollectedintheplenumdrain,aspirateitusingIVtubingintoanevacuatedcontainer.
Labeltheevacuatedcontainerfordisposalaschemotherapywaste.
j. Cleantheplenumdrainareaandwipedry.
k. Ifthecabinetrequiresmaintenanceand/orreplacementoftheHEPAfilters,theoperationshouldbe
haltedatthispointtoallowtrainedpersonneltocompletereplacementoftheHEPAand/ormaintenance
actionrequired.

6.6.3 Assembly
a. Replacefront(ifremoved)grill.
b. Replacetheworktrayandcarefullytightenthethumbscrews.
c. ReplaceperforatedmetaldiffuserscreenovertheundersideofthesupplyHEPAfilter.
d. Wipedownallexposedsurfacesoftheworkareawith70%isopropylalcohol.
e. Prepareforasepticoperation.

7.0 GeneralMaintenance

Allmaintenanceactionsonthisequipmentmustbeperformedbyaqualified
technicianwhoisfamiliarwiththepropermaintenanceproceduresrequiredforthis

7.1 Decontamination
NomaintenanceshouldbeperformedontheinterioroftheLABGARDEScabinet(areabehindaccesspanels)unlessthe
cabinethasbeenmicrobiologicallydecontaminated,isknowntobiologicallyclean,orknowntobechemicallyinert.

airflowsareexternaltothecabinetinterior.Themotorislubricatedforlifeandisthermallyprotectedwithautomatic
reset.

7.2 FluorescentLampBulbReplacement
Thetwo(T8)fluorescentbulbsarecoolwhite,rapidstartandplacedexternaltothecabinettoaidmaintenanceand
minimizeheatbuildupwithinthecabinet.Theliferatingofthebulbis9000hoursbasedonthreehourburningcycles.

Toreplaceabulb,itisnecessarytoremovethelampassembly.

1. SwitchCabinetLightSwitchoff.

2. RemovethescrewsateachuppersideoftheControlCenterandallowtheControlCentertorotatedown,resting
onthesafetystraps.

3. Thebulbisnowdirectlyexposedforreplacement.

4. Thebulbisremovedbydisplacingthebulbtoonesideagainstthecompressiblebulbholderandliftingoutthe
bulb.

5. Reversetheproceduretoreinstallthelampassemblybeingcarefulnottopinchthesafetystraps,cableortubing
duringclosureofthecontrolcenter.

7.3 HEPAFilter/MotorReplacement
TheHEPAFiltersundernormalusageandbarringanaccident(apuncture),donotneedreplacementuntiltheexhaust
volumecannotbemaintainedortheaccessinflowvelocitycannotbemaintainedat100LFPM(min.).51m/s).Thismay
permittheaveragedownflowvelocitytobeaslowas55LFPM(.28m/s)aslongasnopointfallsbelow20percentofthe
averagedownflowvelocity.

TheHEPAFiltersshouldnotbereplaceduntiltheentirecabinethasbeendecontaminatedorknowntobebiologically
"clean".Constantpressurespringtypeclampsareusedtoholdtheexhaustfiltertightlyinplacetocounteractseal
relaxation,whilethesupplyfilteremploysNuAire'sHEPEXpressureplenum.USEONLYREPLACEMENTFILTERSOFTHE
SAMERATEDFLOWANDSIZEASORIGINALLYINSTALLED,TOINSUREPROPERAIRFLOWBALANCECANBEACHIEVED.

Itisnotalwaysnecessarytoreplaceboththesupplyandexhaustfiltersatthesametime.Infact,itishighlylikelythatthe
exhaustfilterwillneedreplacementfarmoreoftenthanthesupplyfilter,dueto(1)thelargervolumeofairpassing
throughit,(2)itsmuchsmallersize,and(3)thecapabilityoftheexhaustsystem.

7.3.1 SupplyFilterReplacement(seeDrawingBCD05659)


Disconnectelectricalpowerfromthecabinetbeforeattemptinganymaintenanceaction.


Step1: Removescrewsateachuppersideofthecontrolcenterandallowthecontrolcentertorotatedown,
restingonthesafetystraps.Second,removethefrontdecorativepanel,whichisheldintopositionby(3)
knurlednutsonthetopedgeand(6)knurledscrewsonthefront.

Step2: Placeslidingwindowintolowestpositionandremovefrontfilterpanel,whichisheldintopositionby
Phillipspanheadscrews.Oncethescrewsareremoved,removethepanel.

NOTE: Screwsareusedinlieuofacornnuts,andlockwashers.
ThescrewshaveOringsandshouldbereplacedifdamagedorbadlydeformed.

Step3: Removebloweraccesspanel,whichisheldintopositionby1/420acornnuts.Oncetheacornnutsare
removed,removethepanel.

Theinteriorofthecabinetisnowfullyexposedforreplacementofthefilter.

Step4:Toremovethesupplyfilter:
a. Unlatchthethreefilterclamps.(InfrontofthesupplyHEPAfilter)Theclampsprovideveryhigh
tensionandmayrequiremechanicalassistancetounfasten.Keepfingerandhandsclearwhen
releasing!
b. Loosenthreeblackhandknobs(about3turns)inbackofpermanentplenum.
c. Liftthepermanentplenumandholdupwithwirestrap.
d. Carefullyremovethesupplyfilter.

intoexhaustchamber.TightenHEPAsealframe(clockwise)untilthegasketisvisuallydepressedby1/8inch

7.3.3 Motor/BlowerAssemblyRemoval

a. Itisrecommendedthatthemotor/blowertoberemovedasasingleunit.Toremove,disconnect
electricalconnectionstothemotor,removetheHEPEXpressureplenumandunboltthemotor/blower
assemblyfromtheroofofthecabinet(4places).Alwaysinspecttherubberisolationmotormountsand
replacethosethatarecrackedorvisiblyshowstress.

b. Replacethemotorexactlyasoriginallyinstalledintheblowerhousing,payingparticularattentiontothe
correctelectricalconnections(seeElectricalSchematic).

c. Reinstallthenewmotor/blowerassembly.

7.4 SlidingWindowReplacement&Adjustment
Theslidingwindowreplacementisaccomplishedbyremovingthefrontdecorativepanel,controlcenter,andwindowglide
assemblies.Theslidingwindowadjustmentmayberequiredduetoeverydayuseoverthelifeofthecabinet.Theleft
windowglideisstationarysinceitcontainsthemicroswitchesthatmonitorwindowheight.Therightwindowglideis
adjustablebyasetscrewandtensionscrewmethod(seeDrawingBCD11818).Whenadjustingtheslidingwindow,be
suretoverifypropermicroswitchoperation.Iftheslidingwindowistooloose,thewindowwillnotproperlyactivatethe

centeroftheworkzoneovertheintakeslotsfortheexhaustfilter.Theupstreamchallengeportforeachfilterislocatedon
topofthecabinet.

7.6.1 SupplyFilter
ThediffuserplateplacedbelowtheHEPAtoprotectthefilterduringnormalusagemayberemovedasfollows:
Thediffuserissecuredtothecabinetshellby#1/420acornnutslocatedimmediatelybehindthefrontviewing
window.Afterremovingthefasteners,dropthefrontofthediffuserplateseveralinchesandpullforwardgently.
Notethatthediffuserispurposelyatightfititisheldtothebackwallofthecabinetinteriorbyalightpushfit
withprojectingstuds.

7.6.2 ExhaustFilter
Theexhaustfilterischeckedusingagrossleakmethod,sincetheexhaustfilterisnoteasilyscannedwhen

Theairflowsensorfunctionutilizestwothermistorsthatprovideaconstantcurrentsource.Onethermistorisa
referencethatusesaverylowcurrentsource.Theotherthermistoristheairflowmeasurerthatusesaveryhigh
currentsource.Asairflowpassesoverthethermistors,theairflowremovesheatfromthethermistermeasuring
airflow.Thelossofheatfromthethermistorcausesthevoltagefromthethermistortoincrease.Thisincrease
subtractedfromthereferencethermistoroutputvoltageiswhatdirectlyrelatestoairflowvelocity.Arepeatable
curvecanbegenerated(voltagevs.airflowvelocity).

Thethermistorsusedareglassbeadandcoatedandcanbecleanedbygentlyusingacottonswabandalcohol.
Formaldehydegas,HydrogenPeroxideandChlorineDioxidehasnoeffectontheairflowsensors;however,the
formaldehyde/Ammoniumbicarbonateresiduethatremainsafterdecontaminationshouldberemovedfromthe
airflowsensorthermistors.

Thenightsetbackisinitiatedbyeitherclosingthecontactsonthemaincontrolboardorenablingthenight

Theindividualairflowsensorscanberoutinelycheckedduringcalibrationorindiagnosticstoassuretheyarereadingand
activewithintherangeofuse(0to200fpm)(0to1.02mps).Theairflowsensorscanalsobecheckedintherunmode
throughperformanceverification,forresponsivenesstochangingairflowconditions.

8.3.1 RunMode
Tochecktheairflowsensorinrunmode,firstallowthecabinettooperatenormallyforaminimumof5minutes.
Then,placearolledpieceofpaperoverthedownflowsensorintheworkzoneandleavethepaperonthesensor
foratleast2minutesandthenremove.Thisactionwillcausethecabinettogointoadownflowalarmcondition.
Theexhaustairflowreadingshouldincreaseduringthistest.However,thedownflowreadingshouldgodown
below25fpm(.13m/s).Thereshouldalsobeanoticeableincreaseinmotor/blowernoise.Itwouldalsobe
recommendedtomonitormotor/blowervoltageduringthetest.Themotor/blowervoltageshouldbemonitored
fromwhenthecabinetisrunningnormally.Duringthetest,whenthedownflowsensoriscovered,the
motor/blowervoltageshouldbesteadilyincreasingtoslightlyunderlinevoltage.Whenthedownflowsensoris
uncovered,themotor/blowervoltageshoulddecreaseandairflowreadingsshouldbewithinthecalibrationrange.

Ifthemotor/blowervoltagedoesnotchange,anairflowsensorproblemcouldexist.

thebloweristhenturnedoff,therelaywillstayactiveforoneminute,thendeactivate.TheAUXrelaymayalsobe

10.1 UltravioletLight

10.1.1 Overview
Thegermicidalultravioletisprimarilyintendedforthedestructionofbacteriaandothermicroorganismsintheair
orondirectlyexposedsurfaces.Approximately95%oftheultravioletradiationsfromgermicidaltubesareinthe
253.7nanometerregion.Thisisaregionintheultravioletspectrumwhichisnearthepeakofgermicidal
effectiveness.Theexposurenecessarytokillbacteriaistheproductoftimeandintensity.Highintensitiesfora
shortperiodoftime,orlowintensitiesforalongerperiodarefundamentallyequalinlethaldosageonbacteria
(disregardingthelifecycleofbacteria).Theintensityoflightfallingonagivenareaisgovernedbytheinverselaw;
thatisthekillingintensitydecreasesasthedistanceincreasesfromthetube.

Thegermicidaltubeisplacedinthecabinettoprovideanaverageintensityof100microwattspersquare
centimeter(foranewtube)fallingonahorizontalplanedefinedbythecenteroftheworksurface.The
minimumrequirementperparagraph5.12ofNSFStandard49is40microwattspersquarecentimeter(ref.NSF
Std.#49,June,1976).

Sinceultravioletrayswillnotpenetrateordinaryglass,itisrecommendedthattheslidingwindowbeclosedwhile
theultravioletlightisonwithinthecabinet;orthatpersonnelleavethecabinetfacearea.

10.1.2 Operation
TheoperationoftheultravioletlightisaccomplishedbyclosingtheslidingwindowandpressingtheUVswitch
locationonthefrontpanel.Theslidingwindowisinterlockedtotheultravioletlightso,whentheslidingwindow
israised,theultravioletlightwillturnoff.

10.1.3 Precaution
Theraysfromgermicidaltubesmaycauseapainfulbuttemporaryirritationoftheeyesandreddeningoftheskin,
ifofsufficientlyhighintensity,orifexposurecoversaprolongedperiodoftime.Forthisreason,oneshouldavoid
directeyeandskinexposuretoultravioletlight.Ifexposurecannotbeavoided,itisnecessaryforpersonnelto
weareyegogglesorfaceshields,andlongsleevegownswithrubbergloves.

Sinceultravioletrayswillnotpenetrateordinaryglass,itisrecommendedthattheslidingwindowbeclosedwhile
theultravioletlightisonwithinthecabinet;orthatpersonnelleavethecabinetfacearea.

10.1.4 Maintenance
Theoutputofanultravioletlightdeteriorateswithburningage.Theusefullifeofthelightisapproximately7000
hoursunderspecifictestconditions.

NOTE:Beforetestingwithlampoff,thelightmaybecleanedwithalintfreeclothdampenedwithalcoholor
ammoniaandwater.

Itisrecommendedthateitheratimeschedulebeestablishedorthetube'soutputbemeasuredperiodicallyand
thetubereplacedwhenitsoutputfallsbelow40microwattspersquarecentimeterorexceeds7000hoursof
operation.Lightsshouldbeallowedtooperateapproximately5to10minutes(longerwhenthelightisinlow
temperatures)towarmupsufficientlybeforereadingtheoutputwithameter.
