EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Recruitment and Selection is a part of human resource management function and it is one
of the crucial activities which have a high impact on organizational and workers
performance. The purpose of the study is to assess the influence of recruitment and
selection practices on employee performance, with referring to Unilever Sri Lanka. The
study mainly focused on the theoretical part of the selected topic because of time
constraints.

The main objectives of the study are to identify existing recruitment and selection
practices and finding the influence it has on employee performance. Also the study shows
the challenges and changing context of the recruitment and selection in todays
organizations in this competitive environment. The study also shows the reviewed
literature summary on the selcted topic. The second chapter gives a detailed explanation
about recruitment and selection concept. Further the sources of recruitment and their
advantages and disadvantages were discussed. Next the recruitment and selection process
was explained. With the referred literature it was clear theres a link between employee
performance and company adopted HR practices like recruitment and selection.
Recruiting poor performers will bring numerous negative outcomes for the company
where as an effective procedures will help both the development of individuals and
organization. Its a win-win situation. With technological innovations most of the
companies are now using computerized automated systems to acquire, retain and develop
its human assets. Also proper HR planning is the key for success recruitment process and
it help in identifying the recruitment need of the company. With the changing context in
the businesses, the challenges that need addressing in recruitments process have been
increased.

In the third chapter, research methodology is explained. The survey was planned to done
in two phases to obtain both management and employees feedbacks. As the sampling
technique random sampling technique was chosen, and a sample population of 75
respondents was suggested. Then the conceptual framework for the study is created. The
identified independent variables are Available sources of recruitment, the nature of
selection decision, Frequency in job creation/ job opening, Attitude of recruitment team,
Ease of the recruitment and selection procedures and fitness of the job description. The
dependent variable is the employee performance.

CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction to the organization
Unilever Sri Lanka, a subsidiary of the Unilever Global family, is a fast moving consumer goods
company (FMCG) with local manufacturing facilities, which the operations are conducted in
three categories: Home Care (Soap), Personal Care and Foods & Drinks in three Main Divisions
Soap, Personal Care and Food & Drinks. Unilever Sri Lanka was established in 1938 with brand
names Sunlight, Lux and Pears Rose. Manufacturing facility is situated in Grandpass and new
manufacturing facility was in Horana. Considering the local consumer as their heart of the
business they have products ideally suited to the Sri Lankan consumer (Unilever.com.lk, n.d.).

Today it is home to 30 strong brands that are leaders in the categories that they operate in.
Further the product grouping include Household-care, fabric cleaning, skin cleansing and care,
oral and hair care, tea, spreads, toilet cleaning, personal grooming and water. The well-known
brands include Astra, Axe, Bru, Ceylonta, Clear, Close Up, Comfort, Dove, Fair & Lovely,
Flora, Knorr, Laojee, Lipton, Lifebuoy, Lux, Marmite, Pureit, Rexona, Signal, Sunsilk, Sunlight,
Surf Excel, and Vaseline. Presently 1500 people directly and thousands more indirectly work as
dedicated distributors, suppliers and service providers in Unilever Sri Lanka (Unilever.com.lk,
n.d.).
