Verona is beginning to look a bit
familiar to anyone who has traveled
northeast of Madison recently, at
least when it comes to food offerings.
Three sit-down restaurants have
opened here since December, and
each is connected to a restaurant in
Sun Prairie.
First came Monks, in its sixth
location around Wisconsin, then The
Verona Woods opened a month later
under the same ownership as Willie
Tys Eatery in Sun Prairie and finally,
in May, Guss Diner opened its sec-
ond location.
Its a continued trend in recent years
here that has seen places like Treads
Bar and Grill and Its Time take over

Seventeen Verona Area School Dis-
trict middle schoolers will have an
in-person Chinese class before school
days next year.
The Verona Area school board Mon-
day approved a new middle school
Chinese class for the zero hour at
Savanna Oaks Middle School. The
program will cost at least $40,760 and
up to $58,760, depending on transpor-
tation costs.
Students will attend Tuesdays
through Fridays from 7:30-8:15a.m.
Last year, the district spent $11,000
on an internet-based Chinese pro-
gram, which allowed students to set
up times outside the school day with
a tutor in China to correspond with on
a computer. But district officials were
unhappy with low usage numbers and
inconsistent growth on a Chinese-lan-
guage standardized test.

graduate Brad Laufenberg was

regular season title, and Laufenberg
struck out five and scattered nine hits
to lead Verona to a 4-1 win.
The Cavaliers (7-1) are just a half
game behind Middleton (7-0) for
first place in the section and are two
games ahead of third-place Stough-
ton (5-3).
Verona took a 2-0 lead in the bot-
tom of the first. Klayton Brandt,
Mike Jordahl and Luke Yapp all sin-
gled with one out, and Derek Mur-
phy knocked in Brandt and Jordahl
with a two-run single.
Stoughtons Justin Moore doubled
with two outs in the top of the sec-
ond, and Dan Campbell followed
with an infield single to the short-
stop. But Laufenberg struck out
Erick Sperloen to end the threat.
The Cavaliers then added anoth-
er run in the bottom of the inning.
David Lund singled to right field,
and Alan Kopp was hit by a pitch.
Jeff Bishop bunted Lund and Kopp
to second and third with one out, and
Jacob Slonim followed with an RBI
single to make it 3-0.
Laufenberg once again had to get
out of a small jam in the fifth. Camp-
bell singled to right, and he later
reached third on a groundout and a
passed ball.

When the Turner family
opened Willie Tys Eatery
in Sun Prairie three years
ago, they had the advantage
of familiarity.
We know everybody
there, said Steve Turner,
who lives in the city north
of Madison.
That made their newest
venture, The Verona Woods,
which opened in Liberty
Business Park in January, a
fresh experience.
We didnt have that
advantage here, Turner
said. It was almost refresh-
ing to ... say were going to
try to win people over just

In the six months since
opening, Turner said the
restaurant has been doing
well, while also facing the

nearby Monks locations in
Middleton and Sun Prairie.
He said its gone well so

There was a lot of admin

a desk (in my old job), he
said. Theres some of that
at this career path, but I
like being active and check-
ing on guests.
Hedrich expects business
to pick up as the rush of
fall sports gets under way,

The doctor tried to sched-
ule a Saturday inducement
for Tim and Doni Selimis
baby thats due in the next
few weeks.
I told her, Saturday is
not going to work, Doni
said. Its a weekend, thats
not for us.
The husband and wife
spend their Saturdays at
Guss Diner, the restaurant
they opened here on May 1,
so they can make ends meet
to support their child.
Its not a weekends-off
business, Tim said as he
and Doni shared a knowing
smile.
The diner is the second
location for the restaurant,
which opened its first loca-
tion in 2008 in Sun Prairie
and is run by Tims father,
Gus.
