On the afternoon of July 25, UNC
released correspondence between
the University and the NCAA fol-
lowing UNC's release of their
response to the NCAA's third Notice
of Allegations on May 25.
The correspondence, which was
released as a response to a public
records request, includes a request
for Roy Williams, Sylvia Hatchell
and Larry Fedora (the head coaches
of men's basketball, women's bas-
ketball and football, respectively)
to attend an NCAA hearing sched-
uled for August 16 in Nashville,
Tennessee.
Vice Chancellor of University
Communications Joel Curran said in
a statement that the coaches would
attend the hearing.
"The hearing is the next step in
bringing closure to this longstand-
ing issue by allowing us the oppor-
tunity to address the Committee on
Infractions and present the facts,"
Curran said.
"The NCAA has requested cer-
tain individuals from the University
attend the proceedings. It is stan-
dard practice for the current head
coaches of programs referenced in
a notice of allegations to attend.

(football), Sylvia Hatchell (women's
basketball) and Roy Williams
(men's basketball) will accompany
University representatives to the
hearing."

sentative, Athletic Director Bubba

Director for Compliance Marielle
vanGelder. According to the email,
the hearing is expected to take two
days.

academic department to provide
benefits to student-athletes that are
materially different from the general
student body, it is the NCAA's busi-
ness. When athletics academic coun-
selors exploit 'special arrangement'
classes for student-athletes in ways
unintended by and contrary to the
bylaws, it is the NCAA's business."
The NCAA also highlighted that
it is equally important to recognize
what the case would not be discuss-
ing.
"This case is not about so-called
fake classes or easy courses. The
institution acknowledges that
although the courses at issue did not
meet its expectations for academic
rigor, the institution did not deem
the courses to be fraudulent. Nor
is this case about NCAA review of
classroom curriculum. The institu-
tion continues to argue that the
NCAA enforcement staff should not
judge academic rigor or revisit class-
room decisions."
The NCAA argues that though the
proportion of student athletes in the
courses under review was not a tech-
nical violation of their bylaws, the
"dramatically high student-athlete
enrollment" is still significant and
shows "preferential access."
"The proportionally small uni-
verse of student-athletes could not
have enrolled in such high num-
bers absent the preferential access

major renovations
Fetzer and Navy Field are both undergoing heavy construction this summer.
Track and field, soccer,
football, field hockey and
lacrosse will be impacted.
Mike Bunting serves as UNC's
associate athletic director for facility
planning and management, which
means that he's currently very busy.
Summer editor Rachel Jones spoke
with Bunting about the extent of his
ongoing projects and what they'll
mean for the future of UNC athletics.
The Daily Tar Heel: Can you go
through what renovations are taking
place this year and how they're going
to impact athletic programs?
Mike Bunting: So in the middle of
campus, we're underway on a soccer-
lacrosse stadium at Fetzer Field and
an indoor practice facility for football
and all of our field sports. So the
indoor practice facility will include
two outdoor practice fields, one syn-
thetic, one natural grass. And at that
practice complex, we are underway
on a new track complex at Finley
Fields, the outdoor track and associ-
ated facilities. That will also include
two synthetic practice fields for our
soccer and lacrosse programs.

We will break ground in August,
next month, on a new field hockey
stadium at Ehringhaus Field. We are
just completing a field renovation at
Kenan Stadium. While the football
practice complex is under construc-
tion, the team will have to prac-
tice, as well as compete, at Kenan
Stadium. And we have just com-
pleted two new grass practice fields
for our soccer and lacrosse programs
at Finley Fields as well.
DTH: Are those programs going to
practice on the fields this year?
MB: For the coming school year,
the two soccer programs will practice
at Finley Fields. Women's lacrosse
will practice at Finley Fields. Men's
lacrosse will practice at Hooker
Fields. They practice early in the
morning, so they'll be out before
campus rec and LFIT programming
starts.
Field hockey will practice in the
Eddie Smith Field House, and they
will also practice and compete at
Duke in their field hockey facility.
Both lacrosse programs will com-
pete in Kenan Stadium for their
2018 seasons. Soccer for this fall,

miss the
mark
Womens lacrosse and
baseball suffered
similar losses.

Every team has those losses
its players and fans would rather
not talk about.
At North Carolina, a few
recent ones come to mind easily.
Members of the UNC basketball
community have done their best
to purge the memories of Austin
Rivers in 2012 and Kris Jenkins
in 2016 from their minds. The
football team's controversial
loss to Clemson in the 2015 ACC
Championship Game will always
be a sore spot.
This spring, there were two
more losses to add to that run-
ning list. And since time heals
all wounds, it's time to take
another look at these defeats
from May and June.
The North Carolina women's
lacrosse program has been a
long-standing model of con-
sistency and success. Since its
1996 conception, UNC has only
missed the NCAA Tournament
twice in 22 years. And under
head coach Jenny Levy, the Tar
Heels have appeared in six Final
Fours and four championship
games since 2009, with wins in
2013 and 2016.
After an ACC Championship
and first-round bye, North
Carolina tore through Virginia,
23-12, in the round of 16. Those
23 goals set an NCAA record for
most in a tournament game. So
when a surging, unseeded Navy
team came to town on May 20,
there weren't many nerves.
The game quickly turned
into an upset alert as the
Midshipmen led, 8-7, at half-
time. The second-half score
remained tight, but it became
clear the Midshipmen were out-
working the defending champs.
They won key draw controls
and key controlled ground balls
as a throng of alumni in Fetzer
Field's bleachers became the
loudest group at the game.
A 16-14 Navy win blocked
UNC, the tournament's No. 2
overall seed, from reaching its
seventh semifinal in nine years.
North Carolina's players walked
off the field dismally as Navy's
fans stormed the field and joined
the team in its fight song.
"You can have belief, do
everything in your power and
take care of all your details and
sometimes it doesn't work out
the way you want it to," Levy
said after the loss. "And that's
life."
The Tar Heels didn't play
an awful game - the defeat was
more confusing than anything
else. It was supposed to be a
tune-up for the Final Four, but
Fetzer Field's final game ended
up being the site of an absolute
stunner.
For North Carolina's baseball
team, it was a double dose of
hurt. These Tar Heels started
off in a very similar situation
as their lacrosse counterparts
- a No. 2 overall seed hosting a
tournament home game against
a red-hot underdog.
The Davidson Wildcats made
headlines as they entered Chapel
Hill, as any team making the
NCAA Tournament for the first
time in 115 years would. But
UNC had its own rallying cry.
One of college baseball's best
programs through the 2000s
had missed the cut two years in
a row. Now, playoff baseball was
back at Boshamer Stadium.
In front of a huge crowd on
Friday, June 2, the 47-12 Tar
Heels got an absolute dud of a
performance from pitcher J.B.
Bukauskas, who was later picked

the players themselves. At this
year's ACC Football Kickoff,
we asked 13 player representa-
tives of the Atlantic Division
what they thought the single
pettiest NCAA rule on or off
the field was. Here's what
they thought:
Jaylen Samuels, senior all-

say the knee pads. I like wear-
ing my pants high, so I think

Past student-athletes adjust at UNC

Given that UNC is often referred

to as the University of National
Champions, it's no surprise that
much of its student body were pre-
viously sports stars in their high
school careers.
Like Adam Cosgrove, a junior
communications major, who was a
two-time all-state soccer player at
the Community School of Davidson.
Or Anamay Viswanathan, a junior
political science major from the
United Kingdom, who chose coming
to UNC over pursuing a professional
cricket contract.
Viswanathan had played cricket
since he was 9 years old, and played
for the under-17 national team in
the UK. But his university choices in
the UK were a bit too close to home,
and a desire to buck expectations led
him to UNC.
"It felt very much like I was hav-
ing my decisions dictated to me,"
he said. "You know, this is where
you have to go, this is where you
play cricket, this is what your future
looks like. And so I guess it was me
being a little bit rebellious."

Offensive line suffers major losses to graduation, draft

Seven starters (six in

CHARLOTTE In college
sports, rosters are like revolv-
ing doors.
Players come and go over
four year spans, doing their
best to mesh with teammates
that are changing, too. In
limited time, they try to get
and stay on the same
page. The success stories can
produce well-oiled machines.
The failures can be as poorly
executed as a children's the-
ater production.
In some cases, it's not all
that bad. Take the 2016 North
Carolina football team. It lost
its starting quarterback but
replaced him with an under-
study who had been waiting
in the wings for three years.
2017 is a different story.
"I've never in all my years,
I think it's around 18 years of
running this offense I've
never experienced this," head
coach Larry Fedora said. "It's a
little bit unknown for me."
When the Tar Heels take the
field on Sept. 2, their offense
will be a redone unit. Seven
starters need to be replaced,
including six skill-position
players Mitchell Trubisky,
Elijah Hood, T.J. Logan, Mack
Hollins, Ryan Switzer and Bug
Howard. To put those losses
into perspective, take a look at
the UNC record books.
Trubisky cemented his name
among UNC royalty in a little
over one full season at the
helm. He comes in at sixth all
time in passing yards (4,762),
first in single-season pass-
ing yardage (3,748) and first
in single-season total offense
(4,056). He adds the fifth most
passing touchdowns (41) and
the most single-season touch-
downs (30) in Tar Heel history.
On the ground, Hood is
among UNC's best. In three
seasons with North Carolina,
he propelled himself to ninth
all-time in rushing yards
(2,580), including the second-
best season (1,463) in UNC
history. He's also tied for
third in single-season rushing
touchdowns (17) and tied for
sixth on career rushing touch-
downs (29).
UNC loses its leader in
career receptions (244) and
career receiving yards (2,907)
in Switzer. The shifty slot
extraordinaire sits with depart-
ing teammates Hollins and
Howard among the top ten in
career receiving touchdowns.
Top this off with Switzer's
return abilities his seven
punt return touchdowns are an
ACC record and just one shy
of the NCAA's and you've
almost got a full-blown turn-
over for the Tar Heel offense.
Almost. With Bentley Spain
and R.J. Prince, UNC will
at least have an experienced
offensive line group to build
behind.
"I like to think that the
O-line is the backbone no mat-
ter what," Spain said. "I think
that we have a challenge this
year to kind of carry this team,
but I'm really confident in our
guys that are gonna be able to
step up."
Spain (13 starts) and Prince
(12 starts) were the part of
a line that allowed 20 sacks,
which isn't ideal but isn't awful
either. Their strong finish
landed North Carolina among
the top 30 teams in the country
for least sacks allowed. Add in
graduate transfers Cam Dillard
of Florida and Khaliel Rodgers
of USC, and the line looks to
be a bright spot for the Tar
Heels, regardless of who's tak-
ing snaps.
With all the new faces
on offense, it may be tough
early on for the unit to find a
rhythm, but the offensive line
knows their efforts will play a
vital part in the offensive status
of the Tar Heels.
"If we aren't doing well, the
skill guys aren't going to be
able to do well," Spain said.
It won't be easy to form a
cohesive unit in one offseason,
but behind the staple of UNC's
front line, the Tar Heel offense
should have ample time to fig-
ure it out.

Mens basketball team will feel the loss of seniors

Less than 24 hours after the 2017
Tar Heels tied the nylon that once
hung from the rims at University of
Phoenix Stadium to the plastic snap
closures on their national champi-
onship hats, Justin Jackson stepped
up to the microphone.
He stood on the Smith Center's
makeshift stage, preparing to
address the delighted fans welcom-
ing the triumphant Tar Heels home.
But before the ACC Player of the
Year could look back on the season
that so-famously redeemed the 2016
squad, the crowd voiced what it
wanted for the future.
"One more year!" people chanted.
"One more year! One more year!"
The junior flashed an ear-to-ear
grin, taking his audience's sugges-
tion to stay for his senior season as
a compliment. Unsurprisingly, he
didn't talk about which jersey he
would wear next while he addressed
the fans. He left the speculation to
everyone else.

In effect, life without Jackson
North Carolina's best rebounder, most
efficient post scorer and most capable
ball handler behind Joel Berry II
was already being imagined. And once
Jackson and first-year forward Tony
Bradley declared for the NBA Draft,
the replacement of these key gradu-
ates turned into an afterthought for
many North Carolina fans.
The reality is, though, the depar-
ture of Meeks, Hicks and Britt will
spur just as many if not more
questions for North Carolina this
season as Jackson and Bradley's.
After all, the Tar Heels won't know
exactly what to expect from their
frontcourt or their No. 2 point guard
for the first time in two years.
First, the big men. Meeks and
Hicks led the most formidable
rebounding frontcourt in all of col-
lege basketball last year, as North
Carolina ended with the most offen-
sive rebounds and highest rebound-
ing margin in the country. They
both averaged double-digit points
in their final seasons, combining for
962 of 1,425 points scored by North
Carolina's post players.
Down the stretch of the NCAA
Tournament, Meeks played some
of the best basketball of his career.
He peaked in the Final Four against
Oregon, going off for 25 points and
14 rebounds, including an iconic
one-handed offensive rebound snag
that cemented UNC's win. Against
Gonzaga, Hicks notched a season-
high nine rebounds along with 13
points including the go-ahead
shot with less than 30 seconds
remaining. North Carolina never
relinquished that lead.
There is no replacing Meeks
and Hicks' impact immediately.
Even if Bradley would have stayed
and joined forces with first-years

Student section still misses the mark

Every UNC student dreams
of painting themselves blue
and cheering on the Tar Heels
from the risers in the Smith
Center as a game-winning
shot is taken. But that dream
isn't always a well-realized
reality due to the structure
and size of UNC's student
section.
Compared to the amount
of seats in the Smith Center,
the size of UNC's student
section is small. Most of the
courtside sections are owned
by Rams Club members,
and of the 21,750 seats, only
3,000 to 6,000 are dedicated
to student tickets, depending
on the game. The additional
standing-room only risers
can hold approximately 200
students.
"When the Dean Dome
was built, the donors were
essentially given lifetime seats
behind the bench," said Gerry
Lajoie, a senior assistant
athletic director in charge of
ticket operations.
Sophomore Hugh Kelley
was part of the student sec-
tion for many games last
season. He said he was
"pleasantly surprised" by
the passion and excitement
he found there last season,
which was better than sea-
sons before.
But despite the fun experi-
ence, he still doesn't think
that the student section is
where it needs to be. For
Kelley, the issue begins with
the lottery ticket distribution
system.
"The lottery is great
because it allows a decent
percentage of the student
population to get tickets," he
said.
"The biggest downside is
it allows students to not be
as committed; they sign up
for it, almost like a routine,
without actually knowing if
they're going to make it to the
game."
Kelley suggested a dif-
ferent ticket distribution
process that would require
students to be more commit-
ted, and would reward the
most dedicated with better
seats.

a writer for Men's Health
magazine, ranked the top
seven men's basketball stu-
dent sections this March.
She said commitment and
organization is what makes
most NCAA student sections
stand out.
"The aspect that makes
student sections unique, to
me, is how well-coordinated
they are and how much
enthusiasm they have," she

"For example, the Cameron

can use in my game to help me
be a better player. I can't really
say what's the biggest differ-
ence between them right now."
The Tar Heels are still play-
ing with two high safeties,
willing to sacrifice efficiency
at times for protection against
big plays, while the 4-3 for-
mation has remained as the
base defense. That strategy
has been effective recently, as
UNC won 19 games over the
past two seasons. But unlike
recent times, the Tar Heel
defense is expected to take
on a greater onus because of
UNC's lack of experience on
offense. That's a challenge he
and his defensive teammates
are up for, Stewart said.
With 17 defensive letter-
men returning, they have a
good foundation to build off
of in Papuchis' first year as
defensive coordinator. Despite
somehow recording only one
interception as a group, UNC's
pass defense rated relatively
well last season, but getting
better against the run has
been a point of emphasis dur-
ing the offseason after giving
up 227.3 rushing yards per
game last season.
Stewart said Papuchis has
been stressing the importance
of becoming more physical
when pursuing the ball car-
rier, while Fedora believes
his front seven could make
improvements against oppos-
ing ground games.
Much of that starts on the
defensive line, where UNC
brings back an experienced
group, including senior
Dajaun Drennon and junior
Jalen Dalton. But UNC's line-
backers especially seniors
Cole Holcomb and Cayson
Collins, and junior Andre
Smith should be the center
of attention.
"That group in the line-
backer position ... really can
be the strength of our defense
this year," Fedora said.
The defensive coordinator
change in 2014 was needed,
and it was expected. While
Chizik's departure definitely
wasn't needed or expected,
his heir seems quite capable
of handling a group that
needs a huge year.

Secondary looks for interceptions

CHARLOTTE The one
number commonly associated
with North Carolina's second-
ary is far from a compliment.
It stands out in the media
guide like a sore thumb. Next

last season.
The Tar Heels didn't get
that interception until Nov.
19, 2016, against The Citadel,
their 11th game of the season.
They were the very last team
among all 644 NCAA football
teams, regardless of division,
to do so. The sole positive
of the situation was a fluky
stat since Green took the
ball 58 yards to the house,
UNC was the only team in the
country to return 100 percent
of its interceptions for touch-
downs.
"It seems so simple," senior
cornerback M.J. Stewart said.
"We were always in position.
UNC Center for Civil Rights faces potential ban

a litigation ban against the
UNC Center for Civil Rights
in early September. The ban
would prevent the center
from representing clients and
acting as legal counsel to any
party.
Student Body President
Elizabeth Adkins sent a letter
to the BOG, asking them to
allow the center to continue
its work. She said the ban
would cripple the center and
take away a serious asset from
the School of Law.
"The reason that they
should be able to litigate is
that these law students get
experience shadowing legal
professionals," Adkins said.
"They get access to knowledge
they can't find in textbooks.

He's right. All the other
numbers proved UNC's sec-
ondary rock solid. The Tar
Heels allowed the fewest pass-
ing yards per game (180.8) and
fewest touchdown passes (11)
in the entire ACC. Nationwide,
they were No. 1 in fewest
touchdown passes allowed to
wide receivers, surrendering
just three in 13 games.
It's an awkward situation
to be in. These defensive
backs excelled in plenty of
categories, but they almost
went an entire season without
punishing a quarterback for
an errant throw or success-
fully jumping a route.
That's not the worst pos-
sible thing, since intercep-
tions are a sexy stat. Any NFL
defender with five or more
is basically a lock for the
Pro Bowl. They're the first
number to appear next to a
cornerback's name when he's
drafted. And while they're not
an automatic way to make a
defense great, they sure do
help. They're turnovers and
momentum-changers.
UNC had a surprisingly
strong season with just one
turnover through the air. This
year, players are wondering
just how much better they
provide as one of the top law
schools in the country."
Adkins spoke at a public
comment a few weeks ago,
an event that was planned
quickly once supporters of the
center discovered the threat
of a ban.
"It's been an ongoing battle
for us," she said. "We found
out that this was something
that the BOG was going to
do. We signed up to speak
the public comment at what
was almost an emergency
meeting. Thankfully we were
able to get a spot, and basi-
cally what I wanted to do
was elevate the voices of the
students. It doesn't really
affect undergrads, but this
was about grad students, par-
ticularly students in the law
school."

sent the Tar Heels to the Final
Four. In Glendale, Arizona,
they redeemed themselves
against Gonzaga on the big-
gest possible stage.
To my right is, well, another
national champion. Cole
Maye joined the University of
Florida's baseball team in the
spring after graduating high
school a semester early. Passing
on his senior season, spring
break and prom proved to be
the right choice. The 6-foot-7
lefty pitcher traded all that in
for a trip to Omaha, Nebraska,
where the Gators beat
Louisiana State University in
two straight games to win their
first-ever College World Series.
Two championships in a
three-month period and the
attention that comes with them
haven't knocked anything off
balance, though. During this
Fourth of July weekend, the
Mayes are visiting Margaret
Sockwell, the boys' grand-
mother, in her mountainside
vacation home. They're headed
to a community cook-out.

On June 8, a gray 2014
Ford Expedition cruised
down Interstate 85 South.
Luke was inside, taking his
usual route home from UNC's
campus to Huntersville, at a
perfectly legal 70 miles per
hour in the middle lane. When
he decided to merge to the
right, he didn't see what was
next to him.
"I didn't look in my rear-
view mirror, and I hit the
tractor trailer on the front left
bumper," Luke said. "And he
kind of spun me out."
Luke's vehicle hit the
shoulder, went airborne and
completed a couple of 360s
before landing upside down.
The car came to rest on its
roof in a grassy bank on the
side of I-85. It was totaled.
"The door was already
popped open," Luke said. "So
I just unbuckled and crawled
out. Had a little scratch on my
knee, but, besides that, I was
fine. Very thankful for that."
In the state highway patrol
report from the scene, Luke
was cited for an unsafe lane
change and an expired regis-
tration. The truck driver, who
had promptly pulled off the
road to check on Luke after the
collision, received no citations.
"He walked back and was
very apologetic," Luke said.
"But it wasn't really his fault."
Within two hours of the
wreck, Luke was back on the
road with his father, Mark.
He still made it to youngest
brother Drake's eighth-grade
graduation and spoke at the
fifth-grade graduation at his
old elementary school.

The Mayes are there for
one another regardless of the
circumstances.
Cole took an 11 a.m. flight
the day after a Florida week-
end series to watch North
Carolina's championship
game, and he was back on
campus for class the next
morning. Luke couldnt make
it to Floridas championship
series, but he weaseled around
summer school and practices
to get to two earlier College
World Series games in June.
"The most important thing
for me is how they pull so
hard for each other," said
Aime, the boys' mother.
"Cole was coming to that
game. Same with Luke
there's just no question about
whether they're going."
Everyone in Huntersville
pulls for the Mayes, too but
sometimes, people aren't sure
which one they're talking to.
After all, Luke and Cole are
just 15 months apart in age.
Confusion has only grown
as Cole has caught up to his
brother in height and, to Luke's
strong approval, facial hair.
Back at home, Cole has already
been congratulated on his bas-
ketball success a few times.
"I usually play it off," he
said, laughing. "It's fun to be
back."
When the Mayes arrived at
Grandfather Mountain, they
went straight to the golf course.
Rising 10th-grader Beau, the
third youngest sibling but
the confirmed tallest at just
under 6-foot-9, describes his
golf game as "getting there."
His older brothers are inching
closer to stealing Mark's title
of best golfer in the family. On
this day, Cole edged out Luke
through 18 holes. But Luke
insisted that score be taken
with a grain of salt, since he
had a three-hour car ride and
no warm-up.
"I took no practice swings,
buddy," Cole quickly added,
denying any advantage of his
earlier arrival.
"You walked around," Luke
countered.
Friendly trash talk like this
is a given when it comes to any
type of competition. Luke kept
quiet after his national cham-
pionship, though, because he
knew he might not be the only
Maye with that title in a few
months. When Cole did end up
getting his own ring, there was
more joy than anything else.
"I didn't really think it was
bragging rights at all," Cole
said. "We were just so happy
for each other."
"And now," Luke said,
"we've got something on every
other family."

already drifting back toward
the line.

He caught the ball and rose
up without hesitation. Luke
backpedaled to half court as
his shot swished, barely mov-
ing the net.
It didn't beat his Kentucky
shot will anything? but it
secured a victory for his team
in the "former versus current"
game that's become a staple
at head coach Roy Williams'
summer camps. The 71-58
win came against a squad
featuring household names
like Marvin Williams, Kendall
Marshall and Joel James.
There was a rematch the
following week, and the
alumni added even more tal-
ent Raymond Felton, Tyler
Hansbrough and Isaiah Hicks.
But Luke and company held
their own, winning 71-65.
With a mostly empty cam-
pus at their disposal, Luke
and the rest of the team have
found plenty of time to bond.
There are bowling trips and
movie nights most recently
"Despicable Me 3." And when
Luke moves off-campus this
fall, he'll room with Kenny
Williams and new teammate
Cam Johnson.
Luke knows he'll be more
involved than ever for UNC
this season. He's penciled in
as the starting power forward
and will also see time at cen-
ter in small-ball lineups.
"I think it'll be a really good
year for us," Luke said, "just
because we have a lot of guys
who really want to get back

and show people that we don't
need to fail at something in
order to get back as well."

With to-go boxes in hand,
the family walks around two
long tables of food in alumi-
num-foil trays. As Luke finishes
filling his Styrofoam container
and steps to the side, an ele-
mentary-school boy who's been
eyeing Luke since he walked in
decides to make his move.
He's a little hesitant at first.
The boy's father shakes Luke's
hand and introduces his son,
whos mostly hidden behind
Dad's leg in embarrassment.
But when Luke starts talking,
all of that is gone. The boy
gradually steps out into the
open, laughing and convers-
ing with Luke like a long-time
friend. He leaves the encounter
with an uncontrollable grin
spreading across his face.
"Sometimes I'll look over,
and somebody will be look-
ing at me and then look away
real quick," Luke said. "At the
cookout over there, having little
kids come over and look up to
me and being a role model for
them that was pretty cool."
If there's one thing to know
about Luke, it's that he has
time for everyone. The most
eventful spring and summer
of his life haven't changed
that. And nothing ever will.

DTH: When do you antici-
pate these projects finishing
up?
MB: Fetzer, the soccer/
lacrosse stadium, the indoor
practice facility and the field

of those projects in August
of 2018. The track complex
that's underway should finish
in the spring of 2018. Our tar-
get is April of 2018.
DTH: How is Fetzer stadium
going to be different?
MB: The soccer/lacrosse
stadium? It's different in a
lot of ways. It's a whole new
stadium, so the field won't
have a track around it any
longer, because we're relocat-
ing the track to Finley Fields.
The fans will be much closer
to the field. We'll have seating
on all four sides of the field
instead of just one. We'll have
a new team building, with
offices and locker rooms for
both soccer programs and
women's lacrosse. New LED
sport lighting, new video
board, restrooms, concessions.
Do you know that in the cur-
rent Fetzer Field, there's not a
single toilet? Not one. So we'll
have public restrooms for the
first time. (Currently) we have
to open Carmichael and Eddie
Smith restrooms for our fans
on event days in Fetzer. We'll
have much-improved rest-
rooms, much-improved con-
cessions, many more points of
sale then we've had in the old
stadium.
DTH: Is there anything else
you think we should know
about these projects?
MB: The other thing that
I think is worth mentioning,
these projects are going to cre-
ate some additional field space
for all of our sports programs,
but they're also going to create
some additional field space to
be used by campus recreation
and the campus community.
All the artificial fields that
we're building, we're going
to share the use of those with
campus rec, and that's a new
model. We haven't done that
before. Campus rec has had
their facilities and athlet-
ics has had theirs. And what
we've realized is our primary
programming needs for ath-
letics are in the afternoon
hours and campus rec's pri-
mary needs are in the evening,
and we are going to make all
of our synthetic fields available
for them in the evening hours.
And for the campus commu-
nity at large in the morning
hours, when athletics isn't
using them.

pulled out two more regional
wins to set up a rematch
with the Wildcats two days
later. But playing the same
team yielded the same result.
Davidson won, 2-1, and, just
like that, an incredible regular
season went down the drain.
"You don't expect it to end
like this," senior Adam Pate
said afterward.
Seeing Bukauskas and
teammates Logan Warmoth
and Brian Miller get drafted
among the top 36 only rubbed
more salt in the wound. The
talent was there. The depth
was there. But getting out of
the regional round wasn't.
With frustrating post-
season losses leaving bad
tastes in their mouths, both
the baseball and women's
lacrosse programs will have
something to play for next
spring. And considering what
the basketball team used as
its motivation on the way to a
2017 national championship,
that may not be the worst
strategy.

City editor to the Smith Center to hand
out papers at the welcome home cer-
emony for the basketball team.
I had thought the line at the Pit was
bad it was nothing compared to this.
While the students and faculty that
morning had been polite, the pushy fami-
lies and entitled alumni filing into the
stadium were anything but. The paper
was free, but we could only hand out one
copy per person. I had to argue with ele-
mentary schoolers, dads and grandmoth-
ers to make sure I stuck to that rule. Less
than 30 minutes in I was sweating bullets
as I tried desperately to keep up with the
crowd forming around me.
I started handing out papers robotically,
not bothering to check who was on the
receiving end and only snapping out of it
when someone tried to fight my one-per-
person rule. I came to as a tall blonde in
front of me blinked, paused for a moment,
spoke in a voice that I recognized from a
press conference, of all places.

Take as many as you want, I said, sure-
ly eliciting groans from the sea of argyle
around me. I didnt care. She deserves this.
I covered a womens basketball game
that semester for a sportswriting class.
It wasnt pretty. UNC lost 71-95 against
Duke on Senior Night. I dont think
that the Senior Night part mattered too
much there was only one senior on
the team, and she had retired from col-
lege ball early to try and save whatever
worn-down knee joint she has left.
Theres a lot to be said about the rec-
ognition of non-revenue sports and their
athletes in general, but nowhere is it felt
more keenly than UNCs womens basket-
ball team. You can deny it all you want,
but that program took the fall for the
NCAA scandal that rocked the Tar Heels
in 2012. Roys boys wouldnt have been
able to cut down those nets in April if it
wasnt for Sylvias girls the ones who
stayed, the ones who didnt, the ones who
are slowly trickling back through recruit-
ment to form a laughably youthful team.
And if it wasnt for the scandal, Sylvia
Hatchell might have had a championship
welcome home of her own. UNCs class of
2017 was good. Theyre still good, theyre
just at different universities, running as
fast as they could from visions of AFAM
classes and lost scholarships and NCAA
sanctions. The rest of womens basketball
was bad this year UConn lost in the
Final Four, for Gods sake.
So Im sorry to the grandmothers of
UNC, but Taylor Koenen gets as many
newspapers as she wants. Shes taking
a chance on us. Shes taking a chance to
rebuild. And in a couple years, we might
know her as well as a member of the
mens team. She put up a career-high 11
points in that Duke game. And by the
time a proper senior class is restored to
Carmichael, maybe well be able to give
them credit for all the good theyve done.

With the rise of tracking
exceptional high schoolers
on major networks and social
media, people are now able
to watch the class of 2021
and beyond religiously. The
recruitment process has
become almost as much of a
pastime as March Madness
itself.
This isnt an innately bad
thing its fun to make pre-
dictions, maybe make wagers
with your friends, and the
process can give you a look at
how talented your team will
be in one, two or three years.
Any UNC fan who was in
Chapel Hill or Phoenix, Az.,
the night of April 3 knows
that there arent many things

North Carolina legisla-
tors recently passed a bill
that would ban the state from
doing business with any com-
pany that engages in a boycott
of Israel or its settlements,
or endorses the Boycott,
Divestment, Sanctions (BDS)
movement. Governor Cooper
has until July 30 to veto the
bill or it will automatically
become law. If he does not,
NC will become the 22nd state
with such a law on its books.
First, a little about BDS.
The movement started in 2005
with a call by a wide array of
Palestinian civil society organi-
zations for boycott, divestment,
and sanctions against Israel
until it complies with interna-
tional law and universal princi-
ples of human rights. BDS rep-
resents a nonviolent means of
pressuring Israel to conform to
three precepts of international
law, namely: ending its military
occupation and dismantling
the wall; recognizing the rights
of Palestinian citizens of Israel
to full equality; and respect-
ing and promoting the right of
Palestinian refugees to return to
their homes as stipulated in UN
Resolution 194.

with the political views associ-
ated with BDS, nonviolent polit-
ical boycotts have a long and
illustrious history in the United
States, and have been repeatedly
upheld as lawful expression.
The US Supreme Court has
held that peaceful political boy-
cotts are protected by the First
Amendment.
Thus, this bill constitutes a
frightening, unconstitutional,
and unacceptable double stan-
dard that will punish those
who employ legitimate means
to express their beliefs. I urge
DTH readers to voice their con-
cern by contacting Governor
Cooper.

Think about all animals
as if they were your pets

Over 36 percent of American
households own a dog, and
about 30 percent own a cat.
Cats and dogs, second only to
fish, are the most popular pets
in the U.S. They are intelligent
and capable of complex emo-
tion, and therefore they are seen
as an integral part of the family.

Of course people have
the right to post how they
feel on social media, but
the least any of us can do is
not be the person who acts
like a drunk Red Sox fan
when harassing 17-year-olds

hierarchies, and an impres-
sive ability to solve puzzles and
tasks, but we dont see them
that way. Rather, we distance
and detach ourselves from these
animals in an attempt to keep
our purchasing habits as theyve
always been. We willfully ignore
the statistics given to us by those
we write off as radical activists
who try to guilt us into not eat-
ing meat. I should know, I did it
for years.
The videos of cruel factory
farms we mark off as outli-
ers. We chalk up the torturing
and maiming of animals at the
hands of their human captors
as an isolated act of evil. We
desperately ignore the fact that
pigs have the intelligence of
a 3-year-old human child, or
that cows are able to remember
faces over many years without
seeing them. And as we play
with our dogs and cuddle our
cats, we forget that the total
number of animals killed in
2015 for food alone was 9.2 bil-
lion.
But hey, theyre just animals,
right?

feelings many of you think baseball
games are a tired, boring experience.
If youre in that camp, this column is
for you. I am going to make the case for
why you should support UNC Baseball:
To start, our team will need your
support next spring. This past season
was ended in tragedy. We went to
Davidson College twice in the NCAA
tournament and did not advance past
the regional round of games. Its hard
to come back from an embarrassing
defeat, something that anyone who
was here for the 2016 NCAA Mens
Basketball National Championship
game can attest to.
I believe in the returning players lead-
ing the way. If we as a student body can
get behind the team, I have no doubt we
can win the College World Series.
Even if each of you only go to one game
you otherwise wouldnt have, that would
still be a large increase in support for every
game. Our increased support carried the
basketball team to a championship, we
can do the same for the baseball team.
Honestly, as a side note, supporting
our fellow students, regardless of the
activity, is always a good thing.
Another reason to go is the stadium
itself. Some of my best college memories
are sitting in the Bosh, whether its by
myself or with friends, on a warm spring
day. The experience itself supersedes
the game. Even if you hate baseball, it
is relaxing to be surrounded by fellow
Tar Heels under a Carolina Blue sky I
kind of hate myself for writing some-
thing this cheesy, but its true.
You can even study at the stadium
while youre eating Bojangles. Just
watch out for the foul balls that some-
times land in the student section.
Last, baseball has something for
everyone. If you like numbers, baseball
has no shortage of statistics for you to
learn about.
My favorite part is how watching
the game connects you with a long his-
tory, one that often reflects the best
and worst parts of America: if you go
to baseball-reference.com you can see
the box score for games going back to
1886.
You can see what North Carolina
native and hall-of -famer Buck Leonard
hit during the 1934 season for the
Homestead Grays, or how UNCs own
Andrew Miller did in the last years
World Series against the Cubs.
North Carolina has a lot of baseball
history to be proud of, and UNCs team
is just one way to engage with it, a way
thats free for students. So this upcoming
spring semester, choose any Saturday
and go to the Bosh.
Being the editor of this paper, I
wont have a whole lot of free time to
visit games my senior year. So Id like
to finish with a thank you to Carolina
Baseball. I look forward to reading about
all you accomplish.

And in with the... pizza? Franklin
Street is currently going through
a lot of changes, and
we have mixed feel-
ings about it. Dont
get us wrong, were
thrilled the construc-
tion is almost done and that the
building that used to be Jasmins
will no longer be a barren waste-
land. But even we as college
students have to wonder, do we
really need two build-your-own
pizza places on one block?
Right on target
After months of construction
and blocked off sidewalks,
Target has finally
opened its doors.
Were psyched, and
not just because of
the cheap swim-
suits we can buy. Students and
Chapel Hill residents will no lon-
ger have to rely on a car or drive
down to Carrboro to pick up
groceries. Never have we been
so jealous of Granville residents,
who get to be just steps away.
Hop on over
When it comes to fries, Sup Dogs
might not be top dog for much
longer. Hops Burger
Bar, TripAdvisors
best burger joint in
2016, is adding a
location on Franklin
Street where Lime Mexican Grill
used to be. Hops not only has
several types of burgers (two
types of veggie burgers? Count
us in), but also is home to 11
types of fries, including nacho
and parmesean jalapeno fries.
Goodbye, Old friend
Chapel Hill just got a little less
windy. Last weekend, Old Chi-
cago served its last
Chi-Town Trio and
closed its doors.
While theres an
abundance of plac-
es to fill the pizza void, well be
mourning the loss of the craft
your own mac n cheese for the
next few months. Maybe if they
hadnt raised their $2 pizzas to
$3, things wouldve gone dif-
ferently.
