Weather lowdown
Although summer in Athens began in June, on average the weather reaches its highest temperatures in July.
The average temperature this month is 27C (81F), while the average low is a warm 22C (72F), and the average
high is a stifling 32C (90F). The weather in July stays relatively constant throughout the month. July begins with lots
of sun, no threat of rain, and an average daily temperature of 25C (77F). The middle of the month continues to
produce sunny days with no rain, and an increase of the average daily temperature to 27C (81C). The end of July
brings weather that is the same for the middle of the month. The lowest ever recorded temperature in Athens in July
is 16C (61F), while the highest ever recorded temperature is 42C (108F).
Just as the two months prior to it, July sees the highest average of daily sunshine in Athens for the year at 10 hours.
The warm temperatures and high amount of sun create good conditions for visiting the beach, which is a popular
activity this month. A miniscule amount of rain also makes for good beach days, and in July theaverage rainfall is just
10mm, happening over the course of only one day.
Another reason beaches are so popular in July is because of the increased temperature of the sea. Theaverage sea
temperature this month is 24C (75F), which is considered warm by all, even for extended periods in the water.
Although the temperatures reach their peak in July, they fortunately are not accompanied by an increase in humidity.
The average humidity this month is just 50%, which is comfortable and unnoticeable, although temperatures this
month can be hot enough on their own to create discomfort. There is also an average of zero snow/fog days in July.
If you want to enjoy a summer holiday that will give you plenty of sunshine and warm weather, July is a great time to
visit Barcelona.
Barcelona is jam packed with tourists during the month of July. It is the perfect weather to enjoy water sports activities
and sunbathing. It is the perfect time to enjoy the sea, as the average temperature is expected to be at 23C. A dip in
the sea can be a great way to cool off after spending time in the heat.
The average daytime temperatures generally hover around 27C (that is about 81F) whereas the average minimum
temperatures tend to drop down to 19C (that is about 66F).
July is essentially characterized by gradually rising daily high temperatures, where average maximum temperatures
can exceed a sweltering 30C (86F) one day in ten. Barcelona is also often prone to heat waves in July and August,
so make sure to stay in the shade and keep topped up with plenty of water, as excessive heat can cause dehydration
and exhaustion.
Over the course of July, the length of day is actually starting to slowly decrease, however, it definitely wont affect
your holiday as the shortest day of the month is July 31 st and there are still on average 14:23 hours of daylight, while
the longest day is July 1st with 15:06 hours of daylight. The amount of sunshine hours are also very high at this time
of year at 11 hours per day thats the same as June and August.
Rainfall is very low at this time of the year. The average probability that some form of precipitation will be observed in
a given day is only 22%! In July you can expect only 20mm of rainfall, spread over just four days, throughout the
whole month. Thats quite a significant decrease compared to November, where you can expect to experience 70mm
of rainfall on average. Throughout this month, the most common forms of precipitation are moderate rain,
thunderstorms, drizzle and light rain.
The sky is also very clear at this time of year so you can expect little to no cloud cover. During July the median cloud
cover is only 31% and does not vary substantially over the course of the month. On July 16 th, a representative day,
the sky is clear or mostly clear 58% of the time and only partly cloudy 24% of the time.
Furthermore, humidity during July typically fluctuates between a mildly humid 56% and a very humid 91%, rarely
dropping below a comfortable 42% or reaching as high as 100%. On average, the air is driest around July 14 th, at
which time the relative humidity can drop below a mildly humid 63% three days out of four, while the air is most humid
around July 1st, where it can rise above 87% three days out of four.
During July typical wind speeds vary from 0 m/s to a moderate breeze of 7 m/s, rarely exceeding 9 m/s. The highest
average wind speed of 3 m/s usually occurs around July 1 st, when the average daily maximum wind speed is also 6
m/s. At this time of year the wind is most often coming from the north, followed closely by the south west.
Make sure that you carry a decent sun cream on you at all times, though, as the sun's rays can be strong and cause
sun burn if you are not adequately protected. Also be sure to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
It's also a great idea to take a dip in the sea at this time of year as the sea temperature on average is 24C that's
only 4C cooler compared to August where the sea temperature can reach 26C.
