Defining the Path for Benson Park Going Forward

Many local residents who traverse the trails of Benson Park fondly recall its former identity as Bensons
Wild Animal Farm when the roar of the lions was often an early wake-up call. Others may simply know
of it today as a peaceful and historic venue that welcomes visitors to enjoy its beauty, whether they are
hiking, bird watching, cycling or simply walking.
Since the town purchased the acreage in 2001 from the state, the park has been transformed thanks
to the efforts of the Hudson Board of Selectmen, Benson Park Committee, Friends of Benson Park and,
ultimately, through the hands of countless community volunteers who have nurtured the parks growth
from a wild, overgrown parcel to a well-groomed passive recreation area enjoyed by so many. Most of
the elements of the original nearly $6 million master plan created by the 10-member Benson committee
in 2002 have been completed, and so now the board of selectmen has asked this volunteer group to
develop a new one that adequately addresses the needs of today. Dave Morin currently serves as the
board of selectmens liaison to the Benson committee. He hopes that the new master plan will be
presented to the selectmen this spring. Like the previous master plan, it will include cost estimates for
specific projects being slated at the park.
Benson Park is a very good thing for our town, he explained. For so many years the people of
Hudson have generously supported the efforts at the park. They have done this by approving warrant
articles and by physically being there for clean-up efforts and taking part in Friends of Bensons
fundraisers. They have continually answered the call to help. Now we want to have a very specific
plan of whats going to happen going forward at Bensons, including details and dollar figures. That way
everyone knows exactly whats happening.
At a BOS meeting two weeks ago, Selectman Marilyn McGrath made a statement that $1.4 million in
had been spent at Benson Park over the years. At the selectmans request, Hudson Finance Director Kathy
Carpentier prepared a cost history from fiscal year 2002 to 2017. This spreadsheet, dated Aug. 2, did not
include projects completed by donations, such as the 9/11 project, or shared equipment or material costs.

Madeline Waslick, a HRM major from Hudson,
has achieved Deans High Honors for the spring
semester at Nichols College.
Cody Knapp, a Hudson native, traveled to France
this summer as part of Belmont Universitys largest
group of student travelers in university history.
With more than 650 students participating in 34
programs, including Maymester trips, students
will spend time in Greece, Brazil, England,
France, Switzerland and Haiti, among many
other locations. Director of Study Abroad Dr.
Thandi Dinani said the opportunity to spend time
abroad in college is an invaluable experience
as participants are able to see the world in a
whole new way. Studying abroad encourages
students to expand worldviews and deepen their
understanding of themselves and the world,
Dinani said. Living in a global society, it is
important that our students experience and
understand the interconnectedness of the world. It
also prepares students for their future careers, as
they learn to understand diverse perspectives and
work to navigate other cultures.
Nichols College graduated over 300 students in
May including Amanda Moreau of Litchfield and
Madeline Waslick of Hudson.
Michael Stone of Litchfield was named to the
Deans List at Bates College for the fall semester
ending in April 2017. Stone, the son of Kenneth E.
Stone and Ellen Hay-Stone of Litchfield, is a 2013
graduate of The Derryfield School. He is majoring
in politics at Bates.

Remember Hudson When ...
Senter Cemetery at Potash Corner

First a few words about Potash Corner and how it may have
received its name. The term Potash refers to a variety of minerals
that contain the element potassium in a water-soluble form.
The early settlers recognized the benefits of potassium both in
gardening and as an ingredient for making soap. Its presence in
the soil is a contributor to healthy plants and larger yields. Potash
can be found in natural deposits; it is also a by-product of burning
plant material such as wood. Thinking about it, every early New
England home with their huge chimneys and fireplaces in each
room had a ready source of potash.
Back to the naming of Potash Corner. The name may have
been the result of natural deposits of potash and the early farmers
had developed a method of removing the potassium by soaking
in water. It is also possible that the corner had become a central
location to deposit excess wood ash and thus sharing the potash

also possible that some combination of both these events led to the
naming of potash corner. Whatever the origin, the name survived
and still remains on many of the maps of Hudson.
A small burying place, containing almost a three-quarter acre,
called Senter Cemetery or Senter Yard, was first located in the
southwest corner of Londonderry at Potash Corner. Likely set off
from the Senter Farm from which it was named. Looking at the
names and dates on the inscriptions one can see it was used as a
burying place for Londonderry residents several years before the
annexation to Nottingham West (now Hudson) in 1778.
We do not know the date this yard was first used for burials.
From the inscriptions recorded by Kimball Webster in 1908, the
oldest date found was upon a rough stone marked E.L. K.I.D. Feb.
24, 1759, which probably stands for Kidder. The next to the oldest
is the marker for Jean Senter, wife of John Senter, died Jul 10, 1765.
John and Jean Senter were the grandparents of Deacon Thomas
Senter. If John Senter was laid to rest alongside his wife, his
marker, along with many others, have long since been destroyed
or disappeared. In 1995, the descendants of John and Jean Senter

Donna (Schultz)
Galipeau
Donna (Schultz) Galipeau, 57, of Litchfield,
died peacefully at her home on July 14, 2017.
She was born in San Jose, Calif., on Nov. 15,
1959, a daughter of Ronald J. Schultz and the
late Evelyn Mae (Jarvis) Schultz.
Mrs. Galipeau was the wife of Peter J.
Galipeau, whom she married on Dec. 23,
1995. They shared over 21 years of marriage.
She is remembered as a loving and devoted
wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed
spending her time with her family. She
enjoyed fishing and boating with her husband.
Donna also loved to watch classic movies
from her extensive collection. Donna is also
remembered for her love of life and her vibrant
and feisty personality.
Besides her beloved and devoted husband,
Peter, she is survived by her daughter, Ashley
Kristin Schultz; her step-children, Douglas
Galipeau, Michelle Galipeau, Doreen
McLean and Anthony Galipeau; her nine
grandchildren; her sister and brother-in-law,
Deborah and Willard Altas; her brother,
Ronald Schultz Jr.; her nieces and nephews;
and several good friends.
Funeral Services and interment prayers will
be private at the convenience of her family.
In lieu of flowers, those planning an
expression of sympathy are asked to consider

again, Morin said. They have the vision. Now they
are being tasked with putting a plan together. Im

Police personnel, family, friends and town officials at the Hudson

Kevin DiNapoli.
Captain DiNapoli came to Hudson in 1998 from the Raymond,
N.H., Police Department. He moved up through the ranks to

Hudson Fire Assists in Acid Spill in Nashua

A chemical spill in Nashua at the Whipple Street United
Parcel Package Sorting Facility on Aug. 8 sent four workers
to an area hospital. The incident began shortly after 7 a.m.
when Nashua Fire Rescue was alerted to a package inside the
building that was leaking with an unknown liquid and fuming
on an elevated conveyor belt system. The buildings occupants
had self-evacuated before arrival of firefighters.
The Nashua Hazmat Team entered the building completing
an initial survey of the package, finding a chemical reaction

Alvirne High School Aug. 12 and 13 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Breakfast will be served in
Alvirnes own Checkers restaurant. For more than 30 years, this tradition has funded
scholarships for our high school seniors in Hudson and Litchfield. The cost of the

For the last six years, a student art show has been an integral part of the event,
