Aprs vs Derrire
French prepositions
The prepositions aprs and derrire have somewhat similar meanings, which of course means that students sometimes get them confused. Learn the
difference between aprs and derrire to put all of this confusion behind you.

Aprs
Aprs means "after" in terms of time or a sequence of events. It can be used with expressions of time (https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/telling-time/),
nouns (https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/nouns/), and stressed pronouns (https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/stressed-pronouns/).

aprs 10h after 10 oclock

aprs jeudi after Thursday

aprs la runion after the meeting

aprs toi after you

Aprs can also be used with several verb tenses.

1) past infinitive (https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/past-infinitive/)

aprs avoir eu des enfants after having had kids


aprs mtre rveill after having woken up

2) que + pass compos (https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/passe-compose/)

aprs que jai eu des enfants after I had kids

aprs que je me suis rveill after I woke up

3) que + present tense (https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/present-tense/)

To talk about something that happens habitually.

Je mange aprs que tu pars. I eat after you leave.

Elle lave la voiture aprs quil pleut. She washes the car after it rains.

4) que + future (https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/future-tense/) / future perfect (https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/future-perfect/)

When talking about something that will happen in the future, French requires the future or future perfect, even though the English equivalent is the present
tense.

aprs que jaurai des enfants after I have kids

aprs que je me serai rveill after Ive woken up

Aprs que does not take the subjunctive (https://www.lawlessfrench.com/subjunctivisor/apres-que/).

Antonym: avant (https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/avant-vs-devant/)

Derrire
Derrire means "behind" and indicates a position or location, whether literal or figurative. Its used only with nouns and stressed pronouns.

derrire le restaurant behind the restaurant

derrire mon dos behind my back

Je veux masseoir derrire toi. I want to sit behind you.

Courage, je suis derrire toi ! Take heart, Im behind you!
