Corruption degrades the quality of the services and also ruins the life of the
common people. Many countries in the world are affected by this problem
called corruption. Corruption is primarily seen in instances like jobs, businesses,
promotions, election campaigns, sports etc.
Greed, the desire for power and the wish to advance oneself in society are
primary reasons for corruption. Corruption typically flourishes in societies in
which there is a high value placed on money, power and station in life. Its
effects might include instability, distrust and unjustness. Corruption also
flourishes in areas in which resources are scarce, and the competition for them
may lead some to become corrupt in either obtaining more of them or policing
the distribution of them. Controlling corruption requires a balance between
opportunity to obtain those things one desires with discretion in allocating them
and accountability in how they are allocated. Many developing nations simply
aren't stabilized enough to be able to form a central core that is organized
enough to fend off corruption.
Corruption occurs in developed nations as well, particularly in ones where there
is a strong correlation between financial worth, status and power. In some
instances, corruption can have some short-term positive effects, particularly in
those nations where too much government control is placed over resources.
Here, corruption with the community still provides a system in which private
citizens can gain those resources at a price and temporarily stabilizes the
economy. Ultimately, though, corruption usually has negative effects on an
economy through the funding of money into bribes and overpricing of goods
and services, which puts a financial strain on too many people for too long. It
also leads to tremendous distrust of public officials by citizens. It may also lead
to an overall increase in crime.
Over the last few years, we have seen an increase in corrupt behaviour
manifesting across all sectors of society. Media, on a global scale, is saturated
with stories of corruption involving leaders from governments, the private
sector, civil society and sports buddies. We have witnessed the increase of
collusion in the private sector, as well as the continuous threat against those
brave enough to expose graft and blow the whistle. In our own country, we have
also watched how the abuse of power and misuse of public funds can
compromise a young democracy. It is for this reason that the founding members
of corruption watch realised the need for an anti-corruption watchdog which
would be free from political and business interference and become a loudhailer
from the people.
Main Causes of Corruption
1. Low Pay scales/ Wages: Most of the employees in government sector are
paid low wages and salaries. Hence some employees revert to corruption for
more financial benefits.
2. Low Job opportunities. This is another cause of corruption. Due to lack of
job opportunities at will, there are many people who like to go for corruption
mode to get the job offer. They will be ready to pay lump sum amounts for the
job offer to the higher officials or politicians.
3. Lack of Strict and fast punishments: Even if someone is found guilty or
even caught red-handed by the anti-corruption officials or media, the convicts
get less punishment. First they will be suspended for few months or weeks and
then re-posted to another location with same Job grade and pay. So this means
the official who did the corrupt practice is given a free license to continue his
practice.
If the government is so strict that any such corrupt incidents will lead to
permanent removal from job and also punishment like several years
imprisonment then the corruption will come down to a large extent.
These causes of corruption have to be eliminated for better growth of the nation.
