Its one of a kind. Can you fathom why 60% of those surveyed
said they were dissatisfied with this facility?
Why on earth would we want to support a new facility with
quality air handling equipment, adequate space, natural
light and modern equipment to serve the 75%, of 245 people
recently surveyed, that said they would likely use a new
facility. Consider all the IOP residents who dont even know
its there because they think its a broom closet. Im sure all
the island residents who traipse over to Mt. Pleasant for their
fitness and cardio programs look forward to growing traffic,
congestion, additional energy consumption and wasted time
in their vehicles. Given these factors why do some members
of council think our citizens would utilize a new cardio and
fitness room? Perhaps, in addition to the above, its because
47% of those surveyed said they would even be willing to pay
for the opportunity.
I was the initial advocate on council to improve the existing
facility within the footprint of the current building, hence
saving money and having an acceptable facility for our citizens.
This was shot down for a variety of reasons; some may have
actually been valid. My position is quite clear if we are going to
offer a service or program to our citizens it should be a quality
one. I believe they want and deserve this. Therefore, if we
dont do something we should shutter the Taj Mahal and let the
Munchkins work on their vertical leap elsewhere.

amount of possible total eclipse time in any spot being
about 2 minutes and 41 seconds, according to NASA.
On our islands, the partial eclipse will start just after
1:17 p.m. and end at around 4:10 p.m. The total eclipse
begins at 2:46 p.m. and ends at 2:48 p.m. Looking directly
at the sun and moon could cause eye damage, so be sure to
wear eclipse glasses with a filter that meets the ISO 12312-
2 standard.
Terry Richardson, a College of Charleston professor
of physics and astronomy, made some calculations that
showed the local range and impact. Richardson determined
that the total eclipse will last 1 minute, 30.6 seconds at
White Point Garden on peninsular Charleston; 1 minute,
50.5 seconds at Breach Inlet; 2 minutes, 8.2 seconds at Isle
of Palms northeastern tip; and 2 minutes, 12.4 seconds on
Dewees Islands front beach.
To get the maximum amount of total eclipse time in the

coast, closer to the village of McClellanville where it will

calculations. McClellanville is also the last town or city SKY MAP
