Voice projection is the strength of speaking or singing whereby the voice is used loudly

and clearly. It is a technique employed to command respect and attention, as when

a teacher talks to a class, or simply to be heard clearly, as used by an actor in a theatre.
Breath technique is essential for proper voice projection. Whereas in normal talking one may use
air from the top of the lungs, a properly projected voice uses air properly flowing from the
expansion of the diaphragm. In good vocal technique, well-balanced respiration is especially
important to maintaining vocal projection. The goal is to isolate and relax the muscles controlling
the vocal folds, so that they are unimpaired by tension. The external intercostal muscles are used
only to enlarge the chest cavity, whilst the counterplay between the diaphragm and abdominal
muscles is trained to control airflow.
A way to improve breathing from the diaphragm is to lie on your back on a flat surface. Your goal
will be to fill your lungs from the bottom causing your stomach (and diaphragm) to rise and fall.
To increase resistance put a small amount of weight (such as a book) on your diaphragm and
repeat this exercise. Try standing up and seeing if you can continue to breathe from your
diaphragm.
Stance is also important. Actors are taught to stand erect with the feet shoulder width apart and
the upstage foot (foot farther from the audience, when not facing the audience) slightly forward.
This improves balance and breathing.
In singing, voice projection is often equated with resonance, the concentrated pressure through
which one produces a focused sound. True resonance will produce the greatest amount of
projection available to a voice by utilizing all the key resonators found in the vocal cavity. As the
sound being produced and these resonators find the same overtones, the sound will begin
to spin as it reaches the ideal singer's formant at about 2800 Hz. The size, shape, and hardness
of the resonators all factor into the production of these overtones and ultimately determine the
projective capacities of the voice.[1] [2]
The Effect Of Voice Modulation And Projection On
Training Delivery
Public speakers and expert trainers use the right voice modulation and projection
techniques to deliver their message with an impact. Effective voice modulation
does not only does boost ones confidence in front of the audience but is also one of
the best ways to win hearts and mesmerize people through the power of speech.
One has to deliberately get his voice up and down at certain times for his message
to make sense and get delivered with the right impact to inspire the listeners.

Many people are expert in their field but when it comes to getting across important
messages they forget even simple things such as pausing to allow the audience to
read the text on the screen or allow time. There will be life changing situations
where one gets few seconds to grab the attention of potential customers pitching
his companys sales to a prospective client or delivering an important speech to
100s at an annual conference.

One can be a competent and respected speaker with the right techniques in place.

Below mentioned are some easy voice Projection tricks for Public Speaking:

1. Get excited about what you want to speak

Make sure you are passionate about your message. Your audience will see you as a
believable speaker/performer only when you show passion with the meaning
behind what you are doing in the first place.

2. Warm up your voice before you get on stage

You can do sirens from the low part of your voice (chest resonance), to middle and
then head (head voice resonance). You must access your low voice, connect it (mix
it) to the middle and then through to the high voice do this evenly.

If you bend right down to the floor you can create more flow in your vocal range.
Sometimes standing will encourage reaching for high notes, thus making your
higher voice much more difficult to access (and creating a sense of your voice
feeling stuck).

speaking lessons will help you learn more about vocal exercises that are tailored
for your personal voice type.

3. Have a steady breath flow

You can feel this by using a straw, blowing and using your vocal cords at the same
time. By speaking through the straw, you are able to take notice of whether your
breath is being held back.

Are you tightening your diaphragm so much that your breath stops flowing? When
this happens you lose balance of air. Your vocal cords dont get enough air flow,
end up closing too much and you develop a constricted sound. This makes your
voice sound crackly and old. Breathing exercises tailored for your specific
breathing issue will help you overcome tightness and constricted vocal conditions.

5. Dont force your voice, instead create resonance

If you want to project your voice, you do not need to shout or tighten and squeeze
your diaphragm forcefully. Just release your sound by creating space in your throat
and by learning to feel and create vibrations that are resonating. The diaphragm
will then naturally release air to your vocal cords as you speak. Air and muscle
working together at the right amount of ratio is what makes your voice sound
healthy.
Voice Modulation

Voice is GOD's gift and no one is born voice rich, it needs to be trained enough to modulate, variate
and able to perform professionally for required time. Here i have few TIPS for you to regulate your
throat to produce variation and modulation in your voice as and when necessary. Basically, Voice
Modulation is a change in stress, pitch, loudness, or tone of the voice and an inflection of the
voice. which gives your voice mood meaning and sounds attractive. You can utilize this too.

Here are few components of voice modulation.

Pace or Speech speed: It must always be at a speed that the listener can understand. Put the pace
at that speed where the listener can understand you properly.

Pitch or Depth of voice: Keep it at a level that is comfortable for you and dont strain your vocal
cords.

Pause: Pauses should be given at required intervals like where there is punctuation. It is given to let
the listener absorb your information. It is given for emphasis and dramatic effect.

Power: In order to create power in your voice you should not speak from your mouth but from inside
from the abdomen, make it commanding by generating intensity in your voice.

Volume: Try and match your listeners speech volume, unless they are shouting. Try dropping your
volume so that they have to drop their volume to hear you. Maintain your volume according to the
listener decrease or increase (do not shout to increase it be loud).

Emphasis: Put emphasis by putting some pressure or focus on the key words or syllables in order to
provide contrast to your words bring out their desired meaning.
Inflection: Inflection means ups and downs of words. In combination inflection links meaning and
feeling with your words.

It is an adjustment of the pitch or tone of voice to become enough to be clearly heard and understood
by folks....

Using Your Voice: Tips for

Projection and Modulation

When you're making a business speech it's good to know your subject matter but
being able to project your voice and modulate it will make the speech more
interesting. An audience will tune you out if they can't hear you, if you are mumbling,
or if you are speaking in a monotone.

Capturing an audience's interest will help them learn. If you're making a speech to
increase sales or as part of a marketing initiative it will be a lot more effective if the
audience is engaged and listening. Let's look at modulation first.
Voice Modulation
Modulation is simply varying the pitch of your voice rather than speaking in the same tone (a
monotone) all the time. Nearly everyone does this naturally in social situations but often they
are overwhelmed by the occasion when delivering a business speech. A nervous speaker
will concentrate on their lines and forget to inject a bit of personality into their delivery.

Try to identify places in your speech where slowing the pace and enunciating clearly
will emphasise a point. If you're coming to the end of a section and summarising with
your most important point, for example, deliver it with a little pace. Then pause and
repeat it the last half dozen words in a slower, lower voice. The different delivery
types will make the point stand out.

Get Interested!
The other key to injecting some interest into your voice is to be interested and excited
yourself. If you are bored by what you are saying then the audience will be too. Think back to
some of the most memorable speeches you've heard, it's almost certain that they were
delivered by exciting and motivating individuals.

You don't have to go over the top, in fact if youre jumping around like a jack-in-the-
box throughout the whole session that will be just as off-putting as a boring
monotone. Quiet sections of your speech will help to emphasise the more exciting
parts.

Projection and Volume

Projection is a lot more complex. If you're lucky enough to have a deep booming voice
naturally then you wont have any problem. Volume is not the same as projection though.

As far as volume is concerned, if you are concerned that people at the back may not
be able to hear you, ask them. As most business speeches are delivered with
microphones these days this might not be such a problem.

If people do seem to be having trouble hearing you a simple trick is to look up slightly
and aim at a spot about six feet above the head of the person in the back row. This
will make your voice travel over the top of the audience. If you have your head buried
deep in your notes you will only be heard by the lectern and the front row.

Learning Advanced Projection Techniques

To develop voice projection further requires breathing exercises to deepen the voice and
increase the strength of the diaphragm. You can also change the tone of your voice by
changing the shapes your mouth makes, a little like opera singers. This all takes time and
practice and needs the attention of a voice coach.

But if you are doing a lot of presentations and want to improve your technique a local
group such as toastmasters might help. There you will be able to give demonstration
presentations and get feedback from people who know the craft.
