Only a drill
Fitchburg police and fire personnel conducted a series
of training exercises at Savanna Oaks Middle School Aug.
15-17. The trainings focused on how personnel from the
departments should work together during an active shooter
situation at the school. Officers and firefighters practiced
approaching and entering the school, locating a shoot-
er, treating an injured victim and exiting back out safely
over the three days. The Verona Area School District has
had some larger-scale trainings at its sites in the past with
multiple area departments involved.

Schools in brief
Enrollment above projections
Preliminary enrollment numbers show the Verona Area School District 44 students
above its projection for 2017-18.
VASD projected 5,524 students for this year, which would already have been 79 over
the enrollment count last fall.
The extra population would give the district more flexibility to spend. Superinten-
dent Dean Gorrell said he expects the numbers to fluctuate by the final count on the
third Friday in September.
The largest increases over projections are at Country View Elementary School (37),
Sugar Creek Elementary School (28) and Savanna Oaks Middle School (20). Pre-K is
22 students below projections, and Badger Ridge Middle School has 11 students less
than projected. BUT GET A
