athletic department has announced a
departure from longtime sponsor Rus-
sell Athletic to a more classically col-
legiate partner in Adidas. The change
was released to the public on Tues-
day, Aug. 22, but some involved with
or aware of the deal chose to declare
the information via social media plat-
forms, such as Twitter, on the night
prior to the announcement.
Todd Stansbury, Techs athletic di-
rector, disclosed the information to the
student athletes directly affected by the
transition at a welcome back meeting
Monday night. The announcement fol-
lows years of sponsorship by the former
brand, Russell which had sponsored
Tech athletics since 2007. The discus-
sion had included brands for consider-
ation such as Under Armor and Nike,
but the athletic department ultimately
chose to sign with Adidas.
Stansbury and Jim Murphy, the lat-
ter of whom is a collegiate representa-
tive for the German company, came to-
gether at a press conference on Tuesday
at McCamish Pavilion to discuss the
deal and its implications for the future
of the athletic program. Stansbury be-
gan the press conference by stating that
the new relationship with Adidas will
refine and elevate the Georgia Tech
Athletics brand. He attributed that
statement to the fact that he and many
of the athletics faculty see a strong sim-
ilarity between the values held by the
athletic company and the Institute, a
greater bond than the typical provider-
customer relationship.

Fate of Confederate monuments
The removal of monuments is absurd and does not represent
the values of most people. The notion that we glorify these
monuments is false, and the overwhelming evidence shows
that their purpose is to honor the sacrifice of soldiers, men of
their time, who gave their lives, and who, by law, are veterans
of the United States, just like veterans of Vietnam or WWII ... Our
problem is that we are forgetting our history, not that we need
to remove it. Stop the madness!

ADAPTING TO TECH 1001

Instructor: The Technique Class meets: EVERY SINGLE DAY
Smithgall Student Services Building (Flag) Georgia Institute of Technology
Room 137, Student Media Office TA: Samira Bandaru, Life Editor

Textbook: The Technique Newspaper, available in print every Friday

Introduction
Welcome to Adapting to Tech 1001. This course will involve (mostly) everything you should know about easing your way
successfully into Tech. You might already know a lot of what will be presented in this course. However, its not a matter of
knowing the material, but being able to understand and apply it.

Grades
Students often make the mistake of studying to get a certain grade. While this may be realistic in some cases like if youre taking
Physics II as an LMC major, in most cases, the best way to get good grades is to actually learn the material. While you are often
competing against your peers to beat the curve, you should focus on putting the effort in to get the grade you want.

Get Help
This class is hard. Its harder for some people than others, but no one gets through it without a struggle, whether academic or
personal, and sometimes (most of the time), both. There are many resources available to you, and youre probably aware of most
of themits just a matter of how you use them. Take advantage of your PL or RA , use them as your senior mentor. Theyre there
to give you guidance. Schedule a meeting with your advisor. Familiarize yourself with the Center for Academic Success and
make a 1-1 tutoring appointment or go to a PLUS session. And dont wait until the last minute to get help. Other suggestions
include:
- Make friends in your classes
- Utilize resources listed in your actual syllabi
- Ask upperclassmen for advice

Outside Resources
Choose extracurriculars that reflect your passionsthey may help you in your career or they may notbut choosing a club or
organization that you enjoy doing will allow you to get your mind off of academics and socialize with people who have similar
interests as you, allowing you to shape yourself into a well rounded person. Take this preliminary stage to explore the plethora
of opportunities available to you. This will allow you to narrow down your options to what you are most excited about. And if
you know what you want already, go for it! The best time to start is now.

Extra Credit
Study abroad! Do an internship or co-op! Get involved in research! Enrich your college experience with a semester or two
(or three) of the unconventional but enriching learning opportunities that youll be faced with over the course of your college
career. Its never a bad idea, and if you dont enjoy your experience, at least youll have a better understanding of what you want
(and they look good on your resume).

Dont be intimidated by the know-it-alls in your class. You got into Tech, youre supposed to be here. Everyone gets nervous
when adapting to Tech, but its important to understand that many people feel the same way you do. Put yourself out there,
pursue what you love and youll feel at home in no time.

Tech will enter this game after what should

be one-sided contests against Jacksonville State
(FCS) and Central Florida (whose most impres-
sive 2016 win came against the equally milque-
toast Tulane Green Wave).

Pittsburgh will stumble in after grueling dates

in Happy Valley versus Penn State and at home
against Oklahoma State, both of whom cracked
the Associated Press preseason top ten. Both
teams will be in the midst of early adjustments
to new quarterbacks, with Justin Thomas and
Nathan Peterman adjusting to fledgling lives in
the NFL. A win against the Panthers would not
only avenge Techs high-scoring 2016 loss but
set the team up well for a stretch of equally de-
manding conference matchups.

Tigers are the reigning national champions. To
Tech, Clemson is also one of the few teams tal-
ented enough to consistently thwart the triple
option. Tech scored a single touchdown against
Clemson last year, a season low.
Yet the Tigers who made last years national
championship game so legendary are largely
gone. Star quarterback Deshaun Watson is prov-
ing his mettle with Houston, powerful receiver
Mike Williams is playing for the Chargers, and
defensive leader Ben Boulware has traveled a
state over to North Carolina to fight for a spot
with the Panthers.
This game will test new Tigers quarterback
Kelly Bryant, a relatively unheralded passer.

Regardless of their records by years end, this

game will likely be a thriller. The last time Tech
won a matchup of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate in
Atlanta was 1999, a 51-48 overtime thriller, near-
ly twenty years ago. Perhaps, it is time for such a
result once again.

When the two teams faced last November,

freshman Bulldogs quarterback Jacob Eason
demonstrated his inexperience by throwing an
ill-advised interception to Lawrence Austin, a
play which broke the game open and eventually
led to a dramatic 28-27 win for the Jackets. But
Eason has physical talent commensurate with
his five-star recruit label, and another year in the
UGA offense will surely render him more com-
fortable when this years matchup rolls around.
