Augustines theory of just war

Summary. Augustine is usually credited as the founder of the theory of just war in Christianity.
This theory was defined in the time when Roman Empire was in retreat in front of the barbari-
ans and when Church was struggling against heretics. His understanding of just war was heavily
influenced by the Roman law and Ciceros teachings on this subject, as well as by Saint Ambroses
interpretations of Ciceros teachings. For Augustine, the war is a consequence of sin and wrong
direction of human will, while the true peace will be realized in eschaton. From the elements of
Augustines theory, it is possible to extract the jus ad bellum and jus in bello principles for waging
a just war.

Keywords: Augustine, just war, Christianity, Ambrose, Cicero.
