sice clinical engineering deparments often provide support functions that maintain or enhance
the ability of a mdical facility to deliver cuality health-care, it is essential that clincal engineers be
cognizant of all operational aspect of the facility in which they perform their wide range of
functions. to be effective, therefore,it is important that clinical ingineers understand the wide
range of actities associated with facilities management, wuich includes housekeeping, grounds
maintenance, desing, construction and renovation, engineering services (e.g.,heating,ventilation
and air conditioning),and operations (e.g., policy, organization, budget, personnel, and financial
actities). the level of involvement of the clinical engineerin facilities management or facilities
design activities is determined by a number of factors, including the expertise and willingness of
the hospital's engineering personnel. in any event, collaboration between facilities and clinical
engineers is critical in today's cost-conscious health-care environment. with this in mind, this
chapter initially presents and overview of a facilities management (FM) program and then
describes, in detail, those FM functions in which clinical engineers may become involved. the
chapter is divided into two sections.
